Belichick Coaching Notes

Was bored at work and scrolling through NYC's daily update thought this was some great information and you can really see where McDaniels gets some of his core idea's from. Comes from the Mike Lombardi part at the bottom of NYC's list. ALWAYS START WITH SPECIAL TEAMS.

My two favourite sayings have always been:

Born to lose; Live to win.

Adapt or Die!

BILL BELICHICK NOTES

  • Get people in your program that you can trust.  Have a strong core.
  • Coach the team every week.

§  15-30 minutes every day talking about and showing the team what we are going to do to be successful.

  • There is no I in Team. There is an I in WIN. It is about individual performance. Everyone do your job.
  • Always start with special teams.

§  Ball handling.

§  No penalties.

  • Uses plays to show his players – your team, other teams.

§  Discipline and judgment.

§  Need to know right and wrong plays.

  • Expect and Demand.
  • How to stop players, plays, critical plays. What are we going to do? How are we going to defend it?
  • Is everyone trying to do what we ask them to do?
  • Emphasizing Fundamentals:
  •   WR Coach tells the players two things each week:

                                    1. Get open.

                                    2. Catch the ball.

  • The Patriots do not beat themselves.
  • Your team has to be adaptable.  Every team you play is different.
  • When putting in a play he asks these two questions:

            1. What is the upside on this play?

            2. Why are we running it?

It is interesting when compared to Jon Grudens style

Information taken from same Lombardi post.

JON GRUDEN’S NOTES

· You’ve got to love the game.

§ Preparation

§ Players

§ Competition

· What is a Coach?

            1. Teacher

            2. Motivator

            3. Challenge them to finish!

Show players examples of what you are looking for. Show them 6-7 clips.
Stage competitive drills. Best vs. Best.
Offseason:
            1. What do you do to get better?

§ Study film.

§ Think about things.

            2. Who is dominant in what they do?

            3. What are the problem plays?

            4. How can we be the best?

§ Eliminate excuses. Guys that dominate are mentally tough.

Improve mental toughness.
Fundamentals – Accumulation of knowledge and fundamental work.
§ 5-10 minutes every day. Before, during, or after practice.

§ Repetition is the mother of learning.

The great ones concentrate.
Effort – what you put in is what you get out.
FINISH PLAYS – Practice standards.
COMPETE – There is a short time to prepare.
KEEP GETTING BETTER!

Quite a contrast of styles

When I read these yesterday, I found it so interesting that Belichick seems more grounded in specific ways to improve, while Gruden’s are about patterning yourself in ways that are more superficial. Not that Gruden’s notes weren’t meaningful, but there’s a lot of stuff in there like “best vs. best”, “eliminate excuses”, and “improve mental toughness” that are good credos but are not really strategies for improving. Gruden’s approach is right in line with his coaching persona, it seems like, as is Belichick’s. I love Gruden, but it’s not hard to see how he could wear on some players. There really couldn’t be a greater contrast of styles on display here.

The focus on the different styles

Gruden: Wants players:
1) who have high intensity.
2) mentally tough.

Belichick: Wants players:
1) who think about what they are doing and how to improve.
2) putting the team goals ahead of their personal ambitions.

Love this post (and your comment, wyoeng)

There’s nothing like seeing a top coach’s teaching basis. Thanks, guys

Thi seems to be a trend

Does anybody see a comparison here?
Shanahan was successful in the next mutation of Bill Walshs’ system.
Can Coach McD mutate the Belnichik system into 1 or more Rings?
It sounds realistic to me

Regular-season
Post-season
Off-season

This is a Fascinating Post

Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.

Like the perspective

is it any wonder we hear Coach McD voicing a lot of the same opinions? Offers hope.

Pray for the best, prepare for the worst, and hope you come down somewhere between the two.
