Position by Position
Quarterback - Orton and Simms. I really think Orton is going to win this battle and is going to do great things for Denver. As a Purdue graduate, you can see that this dude knows his stuff. He is a cerebral player with great arm strength (although people have been saying he has a "noodle arm"). He threw 50-60 yard bombs to Hester all year and still has great accuracy to hit guys over the middle. He loves throwing to RBs and TEs, so look out Moreno, Hillis, and Scheffler.
I think that QB will not be a problem like many people throughout the league think. JC was good, but Orton has control and brains. He can throw it long when he needs to, but he doesn't throw stupid picks, either.
Runningback - Where do you wanna start? There is a huge logjam at RB right now. I am really excited about Moreno and Hillis being in the same backfield. I am not going to rule out Torain, although he may have trouble making the team if he doesn't get healthy. I don't like LaMont Jordan at all. Arrington is okay with me, but I don't see him taking the starting job. Overall, I think our running game will be stout. We have depth and talent.
Wide Receivers - Not a problem at all. Unless Marshall gets suspended, I see no problems with our WRs. With Marshall, Eddie, Stokely, Gaffney, and Jackson, we will have plenty of talent and depth. Stokely is a slight concern with injury. He is getting up there in age, but I think Jackson or Gaffney could take over in the slot if he had any problems. I really think the receiving game will be a strength again this year.
Tight Ends - I think that our TE position is going to be a point of interest this offseason and into the season. It all depends on which direction the offense will take. If McD wants to run the ball and pound the rock, we will have Quinn and DG competing for time. If McD wants to air it out, we have to stick with Scheffler and have Graham play behind him. Or maybe McD just wants to get rid of Scheffler and stick with DG and Quinn.
I would love to see Scheffler stay (since I have his orange jersey and love to watch him play), but if he goes, I think our offense will still be okay. We won't have as many receiving threats, but our offense will be able to run on any down because DG and Quinn can block better than Scheffler. We'll see how that plays out, but regardless of how it works out this offseason, I think our TE position will be good.
Offensive Line - With all five starters coming back, our offensive line should look stout just like it did last year. I love Clady protecting the blindside again this year. These guys are awesome and will really help our offensive production. We got some more depth in the offseason with Seth Olsen, so even if one of our starters goes down, we should still be okay.
Defensive Line - We couldn't have gotten any worse than last year. I really like the improvements we made to the DLine. Getting Ayers will prove to be a great pick for Denver. I am really pumped to see Baker play some ball. Fields or Askew should be alright, too. Reid, Powell and Crowder should be fine at DE, too.
I think that the move to a 3-4 will be a good call. I think that we should be fine. It probably won't be a top 5 defensive line, but we made some strides this offseason and that's all we can ask for. I think the Defensive Line will be fine.
Linebacker - DJ Williams will be good, Woodyard will be good, Davis should be decent. The rest ............. I'm not so sure yet. Dumervil and Moss have only played OLB a little while and Boss Bailey is bound to be injured again. I think that time will tell how good this LB group can be. I think the middle will be good, but the outside may be a weakness right now.
Again, I am not saying that it will be, but it might be. If Dumervil and Moss can learn OLB quickly and Boss can stay healthy, our LBs will be amazing. Right now, though, it is early in the offseason, so we can't really tell how good they can be. Ayers will play like an OLB or DE mix. So, that will help, as well. Larsen should get some plays, too.
Cornerbacks - Champ Bailey. Okay, halfway there. hahahaha. Andre Goodman should do okay for a while. I am really excited to see how our young CBs do this year. What about Jack Williams? He played a little near the end of last season. Alphonso Smith really excites me too. With Champ getting older and Andre being no spring chicken, himself, I think that seeing these young corners develop is going to be very important to the future of the broncos.
Safety - Brian Dawkins is going to save this team next year. We have needed a leader on defense ever since Lynch and Wilson left. He may not be as quick as he once was, but he is still a lights out defender who can knock a receiver clear into next week. I really like Renaldo Hill, too. For Miami, he was a solid free safety. In rushing downs, we might see Darcel McBath make some big stops, too.
Kicker - I would really like to see some competition for Prater. The dude needs to work for it. He was amazing the first 5 weeks of the season. He led the NFL in scoring at one point. He faded down the stretch with some huge misses. If he improves his conditioning and makes that leg more consistent, we could have the next Elam on our hands.
Overall Offense - I think our offense will be strong. We have no glaring weaknesses. We should be top 5 or top 10 next year in scoring with our improved running game and quarterback. Yeah, I said it. Improved quarterback. No more interceptions in the red zone. No more pick sixes. Orton is a smart qb that doesn't waste posessions. I am excited about our offense.
Overall Defense - Our defense has improved. I am not going to go out and say that we are a top 10, by any means. I am willing to say that we will not give up 28 points per game. If we finish top 20 in scoring defense, we will go to the playoffs. I think this is a good possibility.

Good Post
I think the Dline and Lb are the biggest question and we will not know the starters till possibly the end of training camp. Training camp will be very interesting this year to see what players step up to win the starting job. I was thinking of doing a post like this but there are too many positions on defense up in the air. The only starters on D for sure right now are Champ and Dawkins. Smith could beat out Goodman for the #2 CB and one of the rookie safeties could beat our Hill. The front 7 is to hard to predict at this time.

good breakdown
it will be very interesting to see how this front 7 gels this season. hopefully we found some diamonds in the rough with Baker and Pedescleaux.

Neckbeard vs The Spleen: How better can this get?!?!
Yes good post
I think the Dline will surprise us this year…top 10 probably not, but far better than last year.
I think Sheffler is going to be used more as an H-Back than he will as a TE. I’d look for Graham and Quinn to both be in the line up at times. These three add a lot of different looks the offense. The possibilities are just endless I think.
I would agree lots of question in the LB group. But, I think this would be a better than average grouping, DJ and Ayers outside with Larsen and A. Davis on the inside, with a front three of Peterson, Fields, & R. Davis. I also think early on we will see a lot of rotation in the front seven until players step up and separate themselves from the others in the way they play. Even after the season starts……..
WR’s Marshall, Royal and Stokely with the next group being Gaffney, McKinney, and possibly Jackson……I also think Swift might be the next Stokely on this team……..
At this point I’m not worried about the RB position, but I think Moreno becomes the starter
though….I’d look for a lot of single back sets.
So far no worries at CB or Safety.
Agree with you on Prater, we need another kicker to challenge him……
So you think McD is gonna keep Scheffler?
I have heard lots of reports of the Broncos still wanting to deal Scheffler. I am not sure. What do you all think?
by broncointheville on May 6, 2009 3:13 PM MDT up reply actions
Depends
Personally I don’t think they do but…
In all the interviews I see they feel that Quinn has underrated hands. If they feel he could catch I would trade Tony in a heartbeat right now. I think he is a bit overrated and we could get top dollar for him.
Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.
Sheffler stays...he wants to run 3 TE sets with each with a specific skill set...
Sheff the reciever.
DG the blocker
Quinn fits in the middle….but all of them will get the ball!
Those that cant coach, compete!
Failing to plan is planning to fail.
All I want is 53 Rod Smiths. Is that asking too much????
I really think
Woodyard Will be one of our starting LB. If he is not in the 3-4 formation then he will for sure in the dime and nickel packages
by gnarlybroncodude on May 6, 2009 3:16 PM MDT up reply actions
I also think if he starts in the 3-4 he start at ILB
He is about the same size as Larry Foote who played pretty good as the Steelers ILB for a few year

Gotta Love
His intensity he brings to the field.
Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.
Makes sense
Like I mentioned I believe we will see lots of ratation as least early on anyway. Woodyard would be my next choice in the middle and sometimes on the edge.
9-10
man im a homer but 54% of you say 9-10 wins? wow. that schedule is pretty damn tough. i would love it though. it made me have a huge smile to see you guys behind the team that much. i put 7-8. actually i would be real happy at 8. i would love some more talk on why you guys can justify 9-10.
you are not really a Homer
which is a term I hate when you think we will only win 7-8 games. Most of the so called good teams next year are good teams on PAPER but they are ok on the Field

hahaha
I like to think that the reason everyone is giving such high win totals is because of my optimistic yet persuasive writing abilities. HAHAHA

good trade
if we do end up with 9-10 wins then i say the, alphonso smith for a #1, was a good trade.
I put 5 wins or less
I agree, this is a brutal schedule, and we will be adapting to new systems on both sides of the ball, like it or not, I think the offense will likely take a step back (learning curve and new QB’s) and the defense may not have that much more to show for their work next year. I understand the whole paper tiger comparisons when looking at other teams, but I have to beleive that most teams have also tried to improve themselves, I think we somehow get caught in this idea that the Broncos are the only team getting better in the offseason, every team is trying to get better, I don’t think we are that far ahead of the league curve at this point.

I say 5-8 wins
I wouldn’t be surprised if McD goes 5-11 a la his mentor.

Detroit Lions
Yeah they were bad, but anyone think they would be 0-16 bad.

Here's why.
The offense is exciting. Despite the schedule being ugly looking, it is about 5 months until the NFL season. Our offseason aquisitions excite the fans and make us anticipate the good things to come. The greatest thing about the start of the NFL season is that every team has a chance to win the super bowl. 32 teams have all done things that either helped or hurt their team.
We know as much about the broncos chances this year as we do about any of the other teams in the NFL. Nobody really knows what everyone has. The patriots could finish 1-15. Maybe the Falcons go undefeated next year. What if Mike Vick came back and actually improved in jail and led a team like the Redskins to the superbowl? Nobody knows.
People are just excited about all the stuff that has been done so far. Nobody knows for sure what is going to happen, but speculating is half the fun. Maybe more. I don’t know.

Nice post - appreciate it!
I just wanted to chime in on the TE situation. Since I’ve got no ‘sources’ in Dove Valley, I can’t speak to the Scheffler situation, but I can say this: we will run a lot of 2 TE sets. Scheffler was an underrated blocker last year – he’s learning, and he’s strong. Whether or not McD forgives him for his silly conduct this winter I wouldn’t know.
But with Scheffler, DG and the Mighty Quinn, we can run power formations all day and provide constant motion off of them, as New England did in the Indy game last year. (interspersed with lots of 4 WR sets). Lots of shotgun, lots of motion TEs, even a TE lined up as a RB on some plays. Innovation is at the door, and that’s the position – coaching – that I look forward to the most.

Right on Broncobear
You said it very well. I don’t have any sources in Dove Valley either, but I think the Shef fler issue is water under the bridge.
my guess on the TEs
I’ve been trying to guess the roster lately, and 3 TEs looks like a good number. That would mean that Scheffler would be one of the three.
I know we’ve carried more in the past but it’s hard to justify 4.
Here’s a roster guess:
TE – 3
WR – 5
RB – 5 (+1)
OL – 8
QB – 3
TOTAL = 25
======
DL – 7
LB – 9
DB – 9
TOTAL = 25
=======
TEAM = 53 = (25, 25, 3 specialists)
There’s still a lot of unanswered questions at this point, obviously.

re: LBs
One thing I’ve noticed is that people are listing Boss as an ILB, and it’s coming from ‘better sites’ so they may be on to something. It may be a temporary chance (I haven’t paid that much attention to where they’ve tried people in mini-camp). It’s made me wonder though.
