I became a fan when . . . .
First of all, let me say thanks to everyone who shared their list of favorite owners, coaches and players. Reading the comments was a lot of fun.
It struck me as I read member comments that there were a lot of statements like "I picked him because he's the only one I've ever known."
So, I thought it might be fun to see if we can't get a cross-section of our fans here at MHR. (Apologies if this has already been done. I didn't a search on the idea but couldn't find anything).
I also decided to make it easy by doing it as a poll. The poll contains 5 names and a year. The names are Owner/Coach/Starting QB/Leading Rusher/Leading Receiver.
I included McDaniels and who I think the starters/leaders will be in 2009, just for fun.
:)
This is a Fan-Created Comment on MileHighReport.com. The opinion here is not necessarily shared by the editorial staff of MHR

I first became a fan, and I think it will stay like that until the day I die

lol--I hope I didn't help create a poll addict

Little, Wright, Atwater, Davis, and Sharpe...
Why are they not in the Hall...I just don't understand.
nope, first poll
probably be the only poll; just found it to be an intriguing question

Don't worry....I like fun polls...go ahead and become a poll addict.

Great post!
I hope everyone participates in the poll.
For me, I’m a “tweener”. I went for 1972 because of Charlie Johnson, but I was actually hooked in 1969 with Floyd Little and my favorite player Tombstone Jackson. I lived with Briscoe, Tensi, and Don Horn before the 1972 game with Minnesota when the Announcer on the radio said “Well it looks like Denver has finally found themselves a Quarterback, and his name is Charlie Johnson”. We couldn’t get many games on television, so I would go out to Dad’s garage and listen to the games on KOA. Ralston was always one of my favorite Coaches and still is.

I became a fan in 69
after my parents moved to Denver; prior to that we lived in Iowa, not much in the way of hometown football there.

Dammit BS, I'm trying to write a post...
you keep coming up with all these great posts yourself!
I became a football fan when my Grandfather took me to the Cotton Bowl to watch Green Bay and Dallas.
But my dad played for East High and showed me the Broncos.
For years I rooted for the Cowboys but was having an affair with the Broncos on the side.
thank you
i enjoy reading your slant on things too. hopefully you’ll have another one out soon.

voted 83
85 would be closer to the mark. Now, I really don’t remember what I was seeing on there, but my Dad loved em, so there you go.

we tend to follow in our dad's footsteps huh?
I can remember sitting beside my dad while he yelled at the tv each time something good happened and when the Broncos did something wrong.

I voted for '83 as well
because ‘88 wasn’t up there. I became an Elway fan that year so I rooted for the Broncos to do well because of him. They were in the Super Bowl down here in SD (got killed) and it has been all ORANGE AND BLUE since.
GO BRONCOS IN 2009 AND BEYOND!!
Lakers and Houston tied 1-1
cool, thanks for sharing
There were a lot of good dates, but I didn’t want to make a poll with 50 choices ;-p
I opted for when the owner, coach or qb changed

1985 is around when I came around as well....
Verbose in style, dispersion of thought, procrastination in life.
85 will live in my memory
as the year we went 11-5 and didn’t go to the play-offs while the 8-8 Cleveland Browns did.
Pray for the best, prepare for the worst, and hope you come down somewhere between the two.
Actually, I was born a fan
no other way to say it…I was raised a Donk fan. and I love every minute of it.

81
is when I became a fan. That was Dan Reeves’ first year. They were 10-6 and should have made the playoffs.
that was a fun year
I loved Morton, and feel bad for Rick Parros, the starting running back — who has become so obscure in Broncos history that he only rated a couple of sentences in his wikipedia entry. :D
thanks for sharing.

My ol man raised me right;
I became a fan when it was Wade Phillips last year. So i guess when Shanahan was fired it really bothered me. In a way Shanahan was the Broncos to me, he was the steady face year in a year out. Alot of players came and went, but he was always there. Anyway enough of that, heres to the future. BTW I’m only 25, so I havn’t seen Denver go through many coach’s.
Shanahan did indeed become the face of the franchise
along with John Elway. Those two are widely viewed as the ones who raised the Broncos into an elite team.
At (gads do I even want to admit this) almost 51, I have seen owners, coaches and quarterbacks change. And in each case, I’ve seen the Broncs rise up and dominate again. Maybe that’s why I can be excited about Mr. Bowlen, Coach McD, and Kyle Orton.

No joke...
The Drive was the first NFL game I actually watched and paid attention to. As a Mets and Islanders fan, it was very easy to root for the team wearing orange and blue.
THE DRIVE
which set the precedent for Denver-Cleveland games for years. LOL That was a totally awesome game.
Thanks for sharing.

Larry Zimmer
When I was 8 in 1978, I had a cassette tape of the Broncos’ year with cuts of Larry Zimmer. I really miss Larry Zimmer.
glad you've shared, but you've lost me
Larry Zimmer? refresh my memory, because I’m drawing a total blank on that name.
Pray for the best, prepare for the worst, and hope you come down somewhere between the two.
I'm glad you asked...
he took over for Bob Martin at KOA…it was Bob Martin I remember. Larry Zimmer was a voice of the Broncos on radio for a number of years.
He was THE play by play announcer for the CU Buffs forever
Like since the early 70’s up until not too many years ago 2000 something with other stuff inbetween, not 100% sure on that as I don’t live there anymore. He was also did play by play for the Broncos as well as broadcasting for lots of other stuff like the olypics, super bowl, etc….. Basically a legend in the colorado area
thanks for letting me know
I was trying to find a player by that name . . . LOL

I can't remember when Bill Walsh stepped down,
but it was aroound that time. I’m still a 49er fan (pay attention but don’t root) but the Bronco are the REAL DEAL. 13-3 Baby!!! Thanks BShrout.
cool, a convert ;-p
I was jazzed in 69 when my parents moved to Denver & I got to have a hometown NFL team to root for. Des Moines, IA is not exactly the sports capital of anything.

on the NFC side
I’ve always rooted for Minnesota — the first Super Bowl that I remember watching on TV was them against Kansas City, back when the Vikings’ D-line were known as the “Purple People Eaters”

When I was (ahem) younger.....
My NFL favorite was the Colts and Johnny Unitas. Of Course the Broncos were my favorite team, but they were AFL. It was the NFL on TV mostly and I got to see a lot of the Packers, Colts, Rams, Cowboys and Vikings; It seemed that one of those NFL teams were on local Denver TV every week. RIP Johnny U!

Johnny U was a house hold name.
Just about everybody knew, or heard of him at that time, kind of like Mickey Mantle.
I met Floyd Little and Otis Armstrong
while I was in elementary school. There was no going back after that!
A proud prognostication of 10-6 in 2009!!!
that's soooo awesome
I’m jealous now LOL

It really was cool!
They were doing an autograph session at the (newly conceived of idea) “mall”.
A proud prognostication of 10-6 in 2009!!!
That's Awsome
Floyd is one of the true “good guy’s”. He has always been there for the kids and all fans alike. I saw him last October at a driving range, but didn’t approach him for yet another autograph, but he would have if I asked. I rather enjoyed watching him as he was really having a good time. He was in town for the Annual Bronco Player Reunion.

1986
In 1985 I was living in pre-Cardinals Arizona, and had just discovered football with the Bears Superbowl that year. We moved (back since I was born in Longmont) to Colorado in summer of 1986. Been a Bronco fan ever since.
So I voted for the 1983 version.
Owning the Patriots since September 9, 1960
and to speak for my son
he was born into it in 2009….. :)

just don't give him anything resembling a pom-pom on a stick
my mom gave my daughters cheerleader outfits complete with pom-poms on a stick.
pom-poms on a stick + toddlers = NOT a good idea. :D

I voted 83, but like Styg it's more like 85.
I was just getting in to football, growing up in Toronto. I was 14, and my Uncle liked the Dolphins. I was trying to find my own team and had sort of arbitrarily decided on the Giants. Then one afternoon I was flipping through the channels and came across this team in these bright orange uniforms, and decided to watch for a bit. Well the announcers were going on and on about this hot shot young QB who could throw the ball from sideline to sideline on a rope and I was hooked. My passion has never wavered. Someday, I’d like to see a game in Denver. I did see them play in Detroit once. I think we lost 44-34 or something, but it was awesome. Boy could that Sanders move, I hated him, but respected him at the same time.

1984-1985-ish
When the Broncos seemingly started to play either the Bungles or Browns once in the regular season and then again in the post season every year for several years. I loooooved seeing Elway pound those crappy Ohio (I grew up in Ohio) teams over and over and over again… oh and then one more time for good measure. ;)
LOL
I’m sure the Browns had have walked away from those years feeling totally snake-bitten; Schottenheimer probably lost a lot of sleep trying to figure out why he couldn’t beat the Broncos

Schottenheimer...
as we all know then went on to coach KC and lost a boatload to Elway and the Broncos there too. You’d think the man has a voodoo doll or burning effigy of Elway at his house, but every clip you see of him talking about Elway, he is always praising Elway to high heaven. Schoettenheimer was a classy classy coach… just too bad he could never win the big one. Hopefully, he’ll make a come back soon.
I...
was born into a Bronco family… Conception? If that doesn’t count, then I would say I became my current Broncos obsessed self in 97 during that crazy run…. However, the seeds were planted well over 15 years before.
J
It's pronounced Moreno, not Marino.
1995
I was in high school and the broncos were fun to watch, it was tough to see Shanny go, after all my obsession with the Broncos tenured his entire career. I’m very excited for the new era and can’t wait for camps to begin.
84 or so
I remember watching a Raiders game in LA and they had hung a sign “Lyle knock the L out of Eway”. From that moment on I was a Broncos fan and the deal was sealed the following preseason when I went to my first game against the Patriots. Neither Elway nor Kubiak played due to Injury, it was Scott Stancabbage (or something like that ) I believe.
LOLOL
figures a fader fan couldn’t spell elway. :D

I started
After Floyd Little, During the M&M connection, with Riley Odoms and Rick Upchurch, and before the great one.
My Dad told me about the 4 seasons:
Pre-season
Regular-season
Post-season
Off-season
I liked upchurch
he was fun to watch, as was little.

miller/morton era for me, I’ll never forget Randy Gradishar and Tom Jackson and afternoons with my Grandpa thanks for the memories
