Another RB...Darius Walker

As reported by the Denver Post, the Broncos have signed Darius Walker. There had been previous reports that there had been a workout of Walker recently. Link: (http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_12318940).

What to make of yet another RB signing? Did McDaniels forget that football is only played with one ball at a time? Is his master plan to accumulate all of the RBs in the NFL in a kind of evil monopoly?

I'm sure the MSM will jump all over this, saying that the Broncos are once again ignoring the front seven when they already have more than enough RBs. But in reality, for the past minicamps, there have only been 3 RBs healthy enough to take reps in practice. So even though our quality and depth at the RB spot is good, we at least need bodies to get through camp. And if Arrington, et al., can't rehab successfully before the season, Walker provides a pretty decent option. I'm willing to bet he'd at least be better than Cory Boyd, P.J. Pope, or our favorite cell phone salesman, Tatum Bell. So count this signing as more insurance against the injuries at the RB spot. After all, Moreno is really the only RB on our roster with out a lot of wear and tear or recent significant injury. So before everyone starts the name calling, take a deep breath. I for one am glad we'll actually have some healthy RBs for the season.

hillis?

i have heard that hillis is a 100% this makes me wonder if that is acurate? or is mcd thinking of him as strictly f.b. and like you said the rest of our guys are old or injured. i like walker but i think even with age and injury we were pretty set with what we have in stock. how about sign a bunch of d lineman. i don’t know what to think.

McD has said that Hillis is nearly 100% (as has Hillis)

Josh has also said that he will use Hillis in a lot of different ways. The point in this post is sensible – you need a lot of RBs to get through training camp.

Well, we had a need for 9 RBs alone last year

Heaven forbid it happens again, but a good competition in training camp and only keeping the best ones makes a lot of sense to me. Or, maybe he’s just goofy ;-)

I'm sure they are not overlooking any cap implications

And for sure they would be negligible. I would suspect that they plan a certain amount of capspace for loss, to help them prioritize signings such as this. So much has to be done sight unseen in the nfl, or else you fall behind the rest of the league, that I think they would be wise to look at the cap as a number to be maximized with some waste thrown in for good measure.

That said, i don’t think another RB (or WR) would be a waste.

There is no army so powerful as an idea whose time has come.

Right on...was it true when i heard that these guys are only paid during the season? Is that true?

Per diem

I beleive they get paid a certain amount per diem each day for mini camps and training camp. I don’t think it counts toward the salary cap.

Jordan has a little bit of guaranteed money

But not much. Arrington and Buckhalter have a bit more coming, but again, it isn’t crippling. Sounds like it’s a double guarantee: if someone isn’t healthy, or someone doesn’t learn the playbook, Denver has some insurance.

the heck?

I’ve been pretty happy with the CFA moves and such since the draft — Baker, Davis, and the Pedasaeeadsesadeax guy all seem like they might stick. this move is a little odd though. is this 9 RBs now?

this is probably it for Torain, I would think. bummer, I thought he had great potential.

by thedoctor on May 7, 2009 7:49 PM MDT reply actions

He played for Houston last year, as a rookie.

He ran for 264 yards in four games, at 4.6 yds/rush and 1 TD. Also 13 catches for 81 yards. No fumbles.

He’s 5’10", 206# and from Notre Dame. Ran for over 1200 yds at 5.0, with 9 TDs in his senior year, and caught 56 passes. On the face of it, sounds like he can play. Let’s give him a chance.

A running back is a quaterbacks best friend.

Especially one that can catch the ball. Does anyone know how many running backs the Patriots carried last year? That may ease some concerns.

I am kind of neutral about this

I don’t really mind it, just more competition, but I don’t expect him to make the team.

An interesting combination

He played for Weis at ND, so one would assume he has a passing familiarity with some of the nomenclature that McDaniels uses. However, he just finished a year playing for Houston, so he’s had a taste of life in a zone-blocking scheme. Sounds like he might be slightly ahead of the curve here…

My only opinion on Torrain

was from Shanny and his comments (which were positive). Perhaps McD and crew have a very different take.

I’m confident they don’t have a different take on Moreno and Hillis. I also suspect they like Buckhalter, Arrington, and Jordan. Beyond that, they may conclude our current/past roster sucked. In which case, more competition=good.

by NedBronco on May 7, 2009 9:34 PM MDT reply actions

more camp fodder

I think they need healthy bodies at RB for camp and to call back if there is any injury. As posted above he has experience with both McD’s and Turner’s style so it looks like a good pickup. Win/win Even if he gets cut he stands a good chance of getting called back if/when the injuries start which, unfortuneatley, will happen.

We're upgrading the Wildcat offense.

We’ll have three back on the field at any time. Sure, we won’t throw much, but we’ll lead the league in rushing by a long shot!

We’ll call it the Thundercat offense. It shall be unstoppable.

I wouldn't start counting the backs until the final 53

Right now it’s all about upgrading, bring em in and let the strong survive!

Its evily brilliant!

McDaniels is going to open the season with a 9 reciever set.

It will drive cincinatti crazy trynig to cover everyone. [/sarcasm]

This is to ensure that the 5 or whatever backs we enter the season with are the best we can find. Giving a lot ofplayers the opportunity to compete won’t hurt. But the cuts will start coming sooner rather than later.

How much input does Bobby Turner on a move like this?

Houston is a clue here. Talented guy with experience in the zone blocking system.
Good insurance, I think the coaches know what their needs are for camp.

by Lisa FB on May 8, 2009 5:34 AM MDT reply actions

I agree with Alan

What if Buckhalter, Arrington, or Jordan get cut? Since we’ve probably all seen them play in the NFL, that would mean that we have a formidable set of RBs left on the team. How can THAT not excite you!

I'm betting that..

One or two of the higher priced free agents we brought in will now be let go….we’ll just have to wait and see which one can’t pick up the offense quick enough.

A proud prognostication of 10-6 in 2009!!!

by Broncotodd on May 8, 2009 8:05 AM MDT reply actions

Another body for camp...

I wouldn’t look too much into this. There is no impact to the salary camp.

He is additional competition and someone to fill in for 3rd team…

He will limit unecessary reps for our star RBs and if he suprises with a great camp and makes the team, well then good for him. I’d give that a 1% change of happening.

Such is life for many players trying to make it in the NFL.

PRACTICE SQUAD MATERIAL???

UDFA From Notre Dame; Darius was on the Texans and Rams Practice squad in 2007 & 2008 – Limited appearance as replacement for Texans injured starter Ahman Green. In Week 14(2008), Walker led the team with 16 carries for 46 yards and finishing second on the team with six receptions for 35 yards against Tampa Bay.

At Notre Dame, Walker owns the school record for most receptions in a season by a running back (56 in 2006) and most career receptions by a running back (109). He ranks fourth all-time at Notre Dame in rushing yards (3,249), third in all-time carries (693) and third in average yards per game over a career (90.3). He rushed for 100 yards in a game 15 times in his career and scored 26 touchdowns — 23 rushing and three receiving. He led the Irish in rushing in all three seasons becoming just the sixth player in school history to do so… He recorded the sixth-best single-season rushing total in Notre Dame history as a junior when he gained a career-high 1,267 yards on 255 carries (5.0-yard average), scoring seven touchdowns. He became just the fourth Notre Dame running back in school history to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards in consecutive seasons, (Info from Wikipedia).

Mcd Adds another pass catching RB to the Bronco Stable…..

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also DREAM; not only plan, but also BELIEVE.

Remember that we questions shannahan last year

when we had 12 WR on the roster to start preseason.
we then had 9 to start the season cut two for minimum cap implication and traded one for a 5th round pick
we then lost a few to injury and had to sign guys like foster

Injuries

According to the Denver Post, Ryan Torain has yet to participate in any voluntary minicamps this offseason due to the torn ACL he suffered last season.

Torain had surgery on his ACL about six months ago and apparently still has some healing to do. He is currently on the fringe of making the team and it remains to be seem if Denver will give up on him.

Arrington is also still carrying an injury
