More Crap from the MSM....

So here I am today just trying to manage to get adjusted to a full 5-day work week again without any distractions or annoyances and I make the brutal mistake of logging into ESPN to see the result of the Federer French Open match.  I find this link to ESPN's NFL splash page with a pic of McD and Orton behind the heading, "Blind Faith?".  I miserably fail to fight the temptation of hitting the link even though I know it's just gonna be another gutless clone piling on with the rest of the MSM pundits on the 2009 Denver Broncos outlook.

Star-divide

Lo and behold it's the spearhead of the MSM, John Clayton, who had some comments to share in response to some seemingly fair questions and comments made by two readers:

A fan named Naoki likes what McDaniels has done in finding players for every phase of the game. He liked the draft because of Knowshon Moreno, the team's new feature back. He likes the idea of having Richard Quinn as a blocker out of two-tight end sets. He has high hopes for Alphonso Smith at cornerback. He thinks Darcel McBath and David Bruton will help on special teams.

It seems Naoki is a knowledgable Bronco fan who, much like our MHR community, is cognizant of our acquisitions during the offseason and what role they may potentially fill considering we're still almost 2 months from training camp.  But here's what the expert's response was:

On some fronts, though, we are going to have to agree to disagree. Although the Broncos have made a lot of moves, I'm still looking for the feeling that they have a plan.

Look, I hate to dissect every word in the response made by Clayton because I'm sure the demands of his job as a senior analyst for the MSM doesn't allow him the time to fact check every one of the 10 responses must provide every other week.  First off, Clayton makes absolutely no attempt to respond to the personnel additions listed by the reader....he basically just brushed them aside and used the opportunity to take a shot at the front office by insinuating that the Broncos don't have a plan

This is absolutely laughable.  I believe an effective plan had been laid out by the new regime which was consistent even with what the Captain Obviouses of the world (Clayton, King, Schein, et al) were proclaiming....defense defense defense.  With the immediate signings of Dawkins, Davis, Hill, Reid, Goodman, and Fields at the inception of free agency, I think everyone was on board with the offseason plan right up until the Cutler saga.  From that point on, the organization was thrown in a blender and they had to re-think their strategy for not only the upcoming season, but for next 5 seasons.  In the end, they acquired a starting quarterback and 3 draft picks which could position the team for success in both the short and long term.  It certainly feels like a plan to me.

Oh, Clayton also fired off this shot in his response:

Remember, Mike Shanahan was fired because of his decisions as a general manager, not his play calling.

Yes John, I'm sure Shanahan's decisions with his players and coaches played a much larger role in his dismissal than his 24-24 record since their AFC Championship game appearance in 2005.  Isn't it remotely possible that the fact that a #2 ranked offense which finished #16 in scoring may have carried just a wee bit of influence in our lack of success last season?  Couldn't those shortcomings on the field have had to do with some measure of play calling???  You're the expert, John.

Brandon in Denver writes, "What is your problem with the Broncos? You have beaten on them like the red-headed step children of the NFL all offseason.''

Fair question Brandon.  Fair question.  Clayton's response?

Brandon, you probably saw that Chris Simms is making a run at Kyle Orton for Denver's starting QB job. If Orton doesn't start after the Broncos gave up Cutler to get him, that's the first major demerit. I've been critical of teams switching to a 3-4 without having a proven nose tackle. The Broncos didn't find one during the offseason. That's a second potential demerit.

Oh, I don't even know where to begin with this beauty of a response.  Now Clayton feels empowered to play headmaster and assign demerits.

Reporting that Simms is making a run at Orton's job tells me how little to zero effort Clayton has put in to evaluating the team.  From the very onset that Orton was acquired, it was clearly communicated by the organization as well as by Orton himself that there would be a full scale competition at the quarterback position.  I don't recall there being a big celebratory press conference introducing Orton as our starting QB.  McDaniels has said from the very beginning that Simms and Orton were both going to be given an equal opportunity to take the same amount of reps with the first team until it becomes clear who will be penciled in as the starter.  To say that Simms is making a run at Orton's starting QB job at a passing camp in May is grossly irresponsible in my opinion, even for a MSM clone.

To be fair, Clayton's second demerit of the Broncos switching to a 3-4 without a proven NT is on the surface not a bad attempt at applying some criticism.  But once again, he could have delved just a bit deeper into some detail by using some of what I can only imagine being a rolodex full of NFL resources.  With the hiring of Mike Nolan, he just assumed we were doing a full-on switch to a 3-4 philosophy....and I assume by not signing Haynesworth or drafting Raji, he believes the Broncos are destined to fail in installing the new defense.  I think Clayton could have just picked up the phone and called Nolan and/or McDaniels and received a little more education on what the plan for the defense would be.  Oh that's right, WE DON'T HAVE A PLAN!

It was never said that Nolan and McDaniels would be installing a base 3-4 scheme.  All they have consistently said was that we had to improve the defense from what we had over the last 3 seasons.  What I've been taking away was that we will be more of a situational defense with hybrid personnel.  Read SWG's fantastic post for more details.

I hate myself for letting this little munchkin get to me months prior to the start of the preseason but I felt compelled to respond and more importantly feel reassured that this MHR community has provided me the education and wherewithal to confidently stick the middle finger to the MSM pundits.....especially those who look like this...

Hey, about Ron Fields....

You know, there was another unheralded backup that languished in San Francisco before seeing his career take off in Denver….I believe his name was Eddie Mac. :)

I hate to bust out the orange and blue goggles, but the simple fact is…we have yet to play a game. I want to see how this plays out before rising up against any brutal overlords(ie McD and Xanders)…for now I will rise up against the MSM brutal overlords…

OHhhhhh…..no seriously, the players and owners should split the profits I think…50-50…maybe even slightly to the owners favor. If only because the more money they bring then the less likely our tax dollars will have to foot the bill for new stadiums.

Clayton

He also seems to perpetuate a weird version of history by implying that Denver traded Cutler for Orton.

No, we traded Cutler for a bunch of draft picks which have become some players at this point, Orton was practically a throw in and his value as such is wonderful. Still if Simms beats out Orton it will be written as a disaster, the assumption being Orton lost the position not that Simms earned it.

Williamson writes an equally lame piece proclaiming that Denver’s front 7 is our weakness. For a new piece there wasn’t even an attempt to include something new. Maybe he feels obliged to write about Denver as he used his experience at the DP on his resume. Still it seems to me like this piece was just part of his quota.

Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.

John Clayton is a twerp

Has there ever been a more perfect example of a twerp than John Clayton? I’m kind of interested in language, specifically slang. I’ve wondered how different people distinguish between “jerks” and “a-holes.” But John Clayton’s existence lays to rest what the definition of a “twerp” is. He’s it. Any further discussion is overkill.

Kfustud said,

I’m curious. What would you say is the Broncos’ primary weakness?

But who will guard the guards themselves?

by Agent Jerry Fletcher on Jun 1, 2009 2:08 PM MDT up reply actions

Lame Piece

Mostly I am criticizing him for cut and paste writing. He could say the front 7 is the weakness but he doesn’t even approach on anything new. So why bother writing the piece? At this point there must be 100 articles saying that on ESPN alone.

Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.

Exactly

If you believe that, fine- give us reasons why you say that. Show us that you have at least a passing understanding of the players on the roster, the team needs, and that you’ve thought about what kind of system will be employed here. About what kind of player the new regime seems to be interested in, and how that might all fit together. Then, tell us why that won’t work.

I’ve yet to see that information from the BS media, most especially from the 4-letter network. What I’ve seen is constant rehashing of the same old stuff. It’s been a Denver Bronco BashFest, one that started with the firing of Shanahan “they needed to give him one more year, those dummies!”, accelerated with the hiring of McDaniels, “they needed a Defensive coach, those dummies!”, and just went “plaid” with cutler “they traded their all-everything QB, those dummies!”.

When the Smith trade happened, it was “they traded their 1st rounder, those dummies!”; during the draft it was “they didn’t address the Defense, those dummies!” pick after pick , but with no detail as to what specifically they should have done, as compared to what they did do, and why.

Here it remains, and this they all still parrot mindlessly- “they didn’t address the Defense, those dummies!”. I find this unthinking round-robin approach FAR too common in the media today.

That’s why I rely on this site for my Bronco info- MHR quite clearly rules the roost.

Just consider the source.

Clayton basically says that Orton “better be the starter or Mcdaniels will be embarrassed” IMO Clayton should be embarrassed to claim that he’s a journalist. He then proceeds to take more time explaining how valuable TO is and what a positive impact he will have on Buffalo….yep, that’s brilliant analysis John, TO is a real proven difference maker. Wish I could get paid to talk about things that I know absolutely nothing about.

I'll only give Clayton credit on one point.

I share his thoughts on the urgency of having a proven NT when switching to a 3-4. I wrote an article about that, and I understand his reasoning.

But I can’t muster too much of a defense for Clayton either. We didn’t acquire a NT in the draft because there really wasn’t one that our staff valued. We’re not going to get a NT just for the sake of getting one. Nolan must believe in Fields, because he sought him out (his former player). We have several guys (including Powell) bulking up. We are also playing a hybrid approach, and can cover for the lack of a true NT by playing the 3-4 with the OLBs as pass rsuhers (I refer everyone to the fine job SWG did on his front page, promoted article on the 5-2).

When Clayton grows up and sharpens his skills, perhaps he can write for MHR. As long as he’s writing for the money, he won’t have the passion to dig a little deeper.

by Steve Nichols on Jun 2, 2009 7:24 AM MDT reply actions   1 recs

More on the NT question...

I recognize that our NT’s don’t fit the stereotypic 330 lb weight. But with 3 very good athletes at around 315 lb rotating in and out of the game. Won’t that be as much or more effective than say one BJ Raji?

by ksondere on Jun 2, 2009 8:35 AM MDT up reply actions

yes and no.

2 gap NTs don’t have to be 330. 315 to 320 is considered about the minimum weight. I’m also ok with the Broncos not taking Raji. He may have been the best NT in the draft, but that doesn’t make him a great NT.

Fields may also be a pleasant surprise for everyone. I’ve read that he might have started for SF in ’09. At the very least, Nolan wanted him.

But the move towards a 3-4 did not involve a move for NT that was as certain as some would have expected (inclusing Clayton and I). I’ll grant Clayton’s point that we haven’t gone to the wall for excellence at NT. But I’ll stop short of endorsing his view. As I ponted out:

Nolan must believe in Fields, because he sought him out (his former player). We have several guys (including Powell) bulking up. We are also playing a hybrid approach, and can cover for the lack of a true NT by playing the 3-4 with the OLBs as pass rsuhers [sic] (I refer everyone to the fine job SWG did on his front page, promoted article on the 5-2).

Clayton has only point that makes sense. But even that point has limits.

by Steve Nichols on Jun 2, 2009 9:01 AM MDT up reply actions

That one was me
I’ve read that he might have started for SF in ’09. At the very least, Nolan wanted him.

I did an article on Fields. The statement was in the SF Chronicle. It alluded to Nolan not making up his mind on what defense to run, and that being the reason that Fields never started, a statement that Rotoworld would echo. It went on to say:

The quickest pair of hands on the line might belong to Ron Fields and is a major reason he’s switching from defensive end to nose tackle. The switch of Fields to nose tackle and Sopoaga to defensive end could make a difference this year in the all-important line play."

I also found this from Rotoworld:
"The rest of the league missed the boat on Fields, who is 27, 6’2/321, and can play tackle and end. He gives new DC Mike Nolan a credible option at nose tackle in 3-4 looks. Fields started under Nolan with the Niners in 2007."

If you had all the pieces in place...

…wouldn’t the word ‘transition’ be ill fitting? Its this shameless departure from logic that defines these MSM guys these days. Luckily I bailed on ESPN years ago. They don’t get hits from me any where in the electronic world. Don’t read them. Don’t watch them. In fact, I am so void of respect for that operation that I’d be more concerned if they were singing the praises. They driven purely by markets and demographics and you can be sure that they openly pander to bigger markets. This is one explanation as to why teams like the Jets, who haven’t appeared in a Superbowl in my entire life time, are always woefully underhyped while far more successful oranizations like Denver become the whipping boys.

I just wonder how a guy can to rise to Clayton’s level when he can’t be bothered to even know what he’s yapping about. That tells you a lot about the audience they are pandering too.

I'm Charlie Brown and the MSM is Lucy

In the past my relationship with MSM was a little like Charlie Brown and Lucy with the football. I knew the MSM was going to pull the football (or something I thought resembled truth) away when I tried to kick it (believe it) but I would still listen to them.

Now I listen to MSM mostly with amusement. Like watching clowns at a circus. What makes it all the more fun to me is that now so many others recognize the MSM as just that, clowns at the circus.

If I really want to know about something I find a great site like this one.

And once again thanks to people like BroncoBear, HoosierTeacher, and so many others making this a great place for real information.

I'm mystified

How does a professional like Clayton make an assumption that the Cutler trade was about getting Orton and that if he doesn’t start it will make McD embarrassed? His analysis is so far off the mark as to be laughable. As the comments above show, I guess that’s the best answer — laugh at such drivel. What is really sad is that he can’t even admit when he gets it wrong. "I’m not wrong, you just asked the wrong question. " Now I hear that Matt Millen is going to hired by NFLN. The media is built on the sound-bite

Like a lot of insular groups, they listen to each other’s statements and assume that they are true. Each media personality knows that they have to say something, constantly, and the pressure to do so can result in a very shallow level of perception.

It’s fine that they have their perspective. Address them if you wish, educate them if you can, ignore them if they irritate you. I often just skim their articles or ignore them entirely – I don’t want to waste my day on people whom I don’t see as in any way authorities, only media personalities.
