Breaking - Orton announced as the starter!!
I just saw this on the DB site. Has anyone heard anything else like this from anywhere else?
If this is the case, I'm surprised. I had expected them to go into camp with the competition still on going at least through the firest two pre season games. But, maybe McDaniels has seen enough and made his decision?
I hope this gets confirmed soon and will be looking for it.
I just checked the DP and NFL.com, and there is nothing there yet, This was even buried on the DB site and I found it a bit accidentally.
If this turns out to be a mistake, I apologize, but it seems like a big enough story to me.

And yet another reason....
, as if anymore were needed, to not even bother with most other message boards and blogs…..especially any on or by MSM sites. Fortunately, IF any of those posters/comment-ers (most of whom I think are trolls anyway) came over here to MHR and read your comment, they’d probably be asking, “What does he mean we’re sorry?” (thinking that you misspelled apologetic) ;-)
There is less than ZERO to be gained by giving those boards and their posters even a passing glance. Stick with the best… and the best is right here at MHR!

No surprises here. Anyone think the Broncos and HCMcD may be looking for a diversionary topic of conversation?
Either way, congrats to Mr. Orton and bring a trophy to Denver!!!!

I do need a new jersey now that my old one was turned into kindling. I can’t figure out who to go with. I need someone who I’m sure will be in Denver a long time to come so I’m thinking Clady. Although KnoMo, Royal, or Hillis are tempting too.

I have officially decided to never buy a jersey of a current player. If I would have bought a jersey in the last 2 years it would have been a Cutler jersey, and I would now be very upset. I decided that buying retired Bronco players jerseys instead. I have a TD jersey and will always be able to wear it with pride and with the full assurance that he will never be traded away. I’ll get a Elway throwback next, for sure. Just my extremely unhumble opinion.

Why?
Again, I would hope that every position is open for some degree of competition, I don’t know how you can have two minicamps and determine that Orton is that much better than Simms, I would of at least liked to see an open competition going into training camp.

Great news
I’m very glad to see the qb battle be done at this point. Now we finally have offensive leadership again and the starting O can gel throughout training camp. I believe McDaniels has known this for a while he just wanted to push Kyle to see what he was made of. Orton will play well, and he will represent the Broncos well.
by mjdbronco on Jun 13, 2009 2:16 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
There is two ways of looking at it
1 When no starter is announced, both quarterbacks will have to work hard if they want to prove themselves and win the job. If McD would have waited, both players would be forced to keep battling and fighting (and thus improving)
2 When the starter is announced the nr 1 guy can work with the nr 1 offense constantly, making it easier to get a feel for eachother as players.
Although knowing the offense and battle for a spot is important, im glad Orton has been announced as nr 1. Now he can take all reps with the 1st team, and get a connection with the receivers and the backs. If McDaniels wasn’t convinced that he was the guy, he would not have picked now already, but waited till later.
Can’t wait for training camp to come around now!

Good points NL.
one thing I think is important to emphasize, as we all already know, is that in the event that Orton starts to get lazy as a starter, McD isn’t afraid to move Simms up.
So in a way, the competition is still there.

One side thought on jersey selection:
I watched a video on the Donks main site today, and I can’t help but feel gravitated towards Hillis’ jersey now. One thing I base my jersey choice is that players “badassery”. Hillis was out in training camp with the sleeves cut off his practice jersey like only he could do. That gained probably about 20 points on the “badassery” chart. Not only that but it’s 2009, and in 2009 I’ll be 22 years old, which coincidentally is his number. Fate? I think so.

I think you may also be referring to
“badassossity”
Yes, many of our current players possess this trait. More at one time than it seems… in a while….
I was stoked when we signed Orton thinkin’ he’d be #18, but of course, it’s retired for Mr. Tripucka, so it’s obviously #8… I was born 8-18-80, and always have that affiliation/curiosity for numerical symbology’s relevance, so yeah, can totally relate to that ‘fate’ feeling!!!!

Indeed, "badassossity" is the proper term
for your region. Here where I live in New England (yuck), we prefer the “badassery” as our common gauge for it. Either way, Peyton Hillis didn’t rip the sleeves off his jersey, they flew off out of fear.

oh for sure my friends
Things have gotten dim here once again and I think it’s a perfect time to enjoy the good things we have going (off) for us, like Hillis’ sleeves. They were spotted yesterday evening in the locker room hidden under Ryan Harris’ shoulderpads waiting for everyone to leave, so they too could leave in peace. You see, when you hang on Hillis like that, you never know who is going to rub against you and he certainly does a bad job as a GPS. He doesn’t say where he’s going or how he’s going to get there. And aside from that, his blatant speeding is cause for concern with the sleeves. They feel, as I do, that his speeding and reckless driving is going to get them hurt. Can you blame the sleeves for wanting off that big rig before they get hurt?

Yeah, I saw that too
Good luck finding Hillis. I had to take a backdoor route and get it via a personalized jersey. Still not sure it’s entirely kosher, but I’ve got to have the guy’s threads.

From what I've seen its cheaper...
to personalize a jersey with the info #7 and Elway, than to buy a authentic Elway jersey. They would be the exact same piece of clothing, but does that make it right? Is it truly a Elway jersey? I’m torn on this subject.

Video/audio is now up
DB now has video of McDaniels after the practice to day and sudio from boht Orton and Sims.
Best comment is from McDaniels. They are still competing. Only now one has it and wants to keep it, the other doesn’t have it and wants it. That’s how we will go into camp and it will continue.
Sims says he agrees with McDaniels assessment to date and that Kyle is a very under rated QB. Sounds like everyone is on the same page and I find this all exciting to hear.

just an observation
but I sure like the way McDaniels handles himself in front of the press. Free with information (but not dangerously so), serious about football, humorous at the right moments, and doesn’t spout endless clichés. And it seems like they are appreciative for it.
I sure loved Shanny, but I always came away laughing from watching his pressers because he almost always said the exact same things every dang week. Man always seemed to have a stock of pet phrases handy for answering virtually any question.

He's genuine
I agree with you. I like his demeanor. Everything you said.
I never liked the way Shanahan handled the media. I always found it very annoying and premeditated. Almost too slick. I remember one year, before the Raiders game, he was asked the perfunctory question about his relationship with Al Davis. His response was, “Let’s just say I’m not on his Christmas card list.” It just came off as very planned. I wonder if he and Peggy had sat around earlier that day brainstorming clever responses to that question.

Tyler Thigpen has better numbers than him :)
Simms is a good back up but remember no one has seen really anything from him in four years. He’s a question mark (although I think he will be a good plug-in starter if the occasion arises).
