Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

According to Mike Klis, the Broncos have named Kyle Orton the starting Quarterback. The only surprising thing may be the timing of the announcement.

Hat tips to Boydy and AlanC for having this a couple hours before anybody on staff seems to have seen it.

It means one of two things

Either Orton’s looked really impressive, or Simms has been flat awful. I like the taste of Kool-Aid, so I’ll subscribe to the former theory.

It was merely a formality, though. We all knew that this would happen eventually. I’m excited. As Horvil Tiki once said: “Horton is win.”

Or just that Guru was right

and the job was going to Orton unless he was awful.

Horton is win.

In the video..

McDaniels said that, among other things, Orten was picking up the mental aspects of the offense faster and making more progress in executing it, though he still expects Simms to do well and keep pushing for the starting job.

He says it adds to the pressure a little bit that now one guy has it and wants to keep it, and the other doesn’t have it and wants it.

Simms says he agrees with the assesment that Orton has been picking up some of the aspects of the offense faster. All three made some pretty classy comments and McDaniels made it pretty clear that he expects them to both keep working and improving.

I liked the announcement. I think it was the right thing to do and done right to boot.

I got lucky, it probably won’t happen again…..

My boy Jack N Coke just makes infinitely more sense as the starting QB than a south paw. A career 21-12 record doesn’t hurt either.

Good job Orton.

Coach is right !!

I too give kudo’s to Boydy and Alanc.
But like most readers of the DP, we know their sports reports are really lame.
I think coach did the right thing to start with. Announce competition to keep both working hard in the new system. And he is also right by naming one the #1 before training camp.
It is an added plus that Kyle is rapidly progressing. They do say that he is very smart and has learned to read defenses quite well.
Coach McDaniels does know QB’s.

by DLMyers on Jun 13, 2009 6:39 PM MDT reply actions

Well I guess it we all knew this was coming.

I am sure that McD was really looking at Simms as well for the starting job, however we all knew this was coming. This will increase the competitions as well like McD said. Orton want to keep it and Simms want to take it so now both will that much more focused on the job at hand……learing the new system and making the right reads.

Good job Orton.

way to attack a guy with an opposing view!

Nice.
My friends in KC, SD & Oakland ARE loving what’s going on in Denver! All feel (as I do) that we’ve taken steps backwards. Orton named as starter certainly strikes zero fear in their hearts!

Now let’s see coach, QB, our existing talent & very likely our much improved defense prove the rest of the world wrong! I just hope McD made the choice because Kyle has shown him something and not simply to quiet the Clayton-like talk that we don’t have a guy who can earn the job.

if your not a broncos fan

Could you please elaborate on this comment? I would think that the other teams may be concerned about what’s going on in Denver. As a Broncos fan I am excited

by War Eagle Aubie on Jun 13, 2009 9:16 PM MDT up reply actions

eh

denver gave away one of the best and youngest qbs

switched to a 3-4 defense but added no significant pieces to complement the transition

with the marshall situation

why are you guys so excited lol

by andrew33 on Jun 13, 2009 11:41 PM MDT reply actions

Gave away Cutler?

Why would you want a QB that doesn’t want to play for you?

Switching to a 3-4 defense takes more than one offseason.

Marshall situation: well, I don’t know the whole situation and neither do you, so I will wait and see what happens.

Excited. Why do you even care?

hmmmm...

Improved system, offense and defense…. one of the best backfields in the league, upgraded significantly at linebacker and DL….. and all with guys who will play as a team… BM situation is a ripple and yes… excited is a good word.

Your Raiders are the ones that should be depressed.

by AlanC on Jun 14, 2009 1:55 AM MDT up reply actions

A surprise?

Simms was brought in to back up. Is his career over? absolutely not! But we did NOT make the Bears trade for another backup. I have faith in McDaniels, and I am pretty sure he did not look at hours upon hours of film to go “hmmm, who would be the best mediocre potential starter we could have?” He looked at the film and said “That is who can work in our system, and That is who will win us 10 games plus!!” And I am actually excited. My stage manager(I am an actor for those of you who care/remember) is a huge raiders fan, and all year I shoved Cutler down his throat. And yet, post trade, I was ever MORE excited about the year with Orton, knowing we had a smart, non-turnover, team-oriented, post-purdue, carry the team guy at the helm. We got this baby!! 13-3!? Okay, a little optimistic. 10-6 baby!!!! Booyah!

And to those going, “Yeah yeah yeah, you keep saying a pro actor, whatever wannabe,” here I am. www.zerotheplay.com Just finished, starting something new. Maybe I’ll toss in an early T.D. reference, since I think my next play will take place mid 90’s.

Kudos!

That looks like a great play, 3.

Woody stirs the pot a little

Gotta love ole reliable {sh*t-stirrer} woody. According to him, Orton had a horrible practice, has the weakest arm of the three, and Brandstater might be the best QB on the team (over time).

Woody is confused

too many changes this year, methinks he needs a long, mostly inebriated vacation before the season starts.

Woody's an odd bird but i like him

And he’s pretty much right. I know our O-line is getting really good but I keep remembering Cutler side stepping (or flat out escaping) & firing… Orton moves not so well and ‘fires’ not at all. …our running game BETTER work or Orton will fail.

And BM now? WTF?

by Whidbey Bronco on Jun 14, 2009 8:22 AM MDT reply actions

The key is..

The words “over time”. I agree that eventually, 2-3 years, Brandstater could prove to be the best of the three. But, for this season, it will be Orton and Simms with Orton as the guy.

You are right though, Woody does love to stir the shit…. alot.

by AlanC on Jun 14, 2009 8:27 AM MDT reply actions

Dear broncos fans...

Don’t worry about cutler. he was over rated. like…. VERY over rated.
here’s the kicker. you’re getting a QB who is pretty under rated because he was stuck in that limbo that the bears call an offense.

you guys should be stoked. you got a QB who makes better decisions and two of the bears’ drafts.

by mossdog427 on Jun 14, 2009 10:24 AM MDT reply actions

Well put mossdog

By the end of 2009 – I can’t believe the Bears gave us Kyle and the draft choices!

by rocko1 on Jun 14, 2009 10:58 AM MDT up reply actions

The funny thing is..

Cutler WASN’T overrated until we wanted to trade him. The media fell in love with him after the first three games and were calling him the best QB in the league, and then when he lost his mojo they jumped all over him, questioned whether he would ever improve, and proclaimed that they were right all along and that he’d never be a good QB. Then we beat the Jets and lost to the raiders and the whole cycle went around again. At the end of the season they were calling him “overrated.” They all of a sudden he wanted a trade and he became this big martyr. I wonder if he was still on the Broncos if the MSM would still be calling him overrated and questioning whether he would work in McD’s offense.

No stairway? ...denied!
