The Case for/against Brandon Marshall

In the last three days, Brandon Marshall has caused quite the argument.  After not showing up for the first two days of mini-camp, we, as fans, have begun to question Brandon's desire to play for the Broncos.  Sure if the Broncos give him a new contract, then there is no question that he will be happy to be a Bronco.  The question is, is Brandon Marshall worth it?  He has had his run-ins with the law and is also coming off a season with a bad hip.  Despite these two setbacks, he has caught over 100 passes in each of the last two seasons.  Members here, and everywhere are worried that we're going to lose two of our best players in this off-season...that would be a huge blow to our team.  We all think that Kyle Orton is going to be successful under our new offense.  Part of the reason we thought this was because we have three great receivers in Marshall, Royal, and Stokley.  So, how would our offense be different if we don't have Brandon Marshall?

Star-divide

WITH MARSHALL- Our offense with Brandon Marshall is flat out dangerous.  We have three great receivers, along with one of the best receiving tight ends in the game.  We also have Knowshon Moreno, one of the best, if not the best, running back in the draft.  So we have three great receivers, a great receiving tight end, and the best running back out of the 09 draft.  It sounds like our offense is unstoppable with Brandon Marshall.  Not only is Marshall a threat to break every tackle, but he draws double teams, which allows our other receivers to get open.  He can also be the leader of this team if he really wants to be, but he hasn't shown us if he is going to yet.  That brings up the first issue with Brandon...his off-field actions.  He has had plenty of run-ins with the law and if he has another, then, well you pretty much know what will happen.  He isn't only a threat to get suspended, but to tell you the truth, I don't want the possible leader of this team to get in trouble every single year.  And yes, Brandon Marshall has also had hip surgery this off-season...making him an even bigger risk if we give him a new contract.

WITHOUT MARSHALL- Without Brandon Marshall, our offense isn't as explosive.  Say we decide to trade Marshall for a NT or some other defensive position, Eddie Royal would be our #1 receiver.  I don't think that Royal is ready to take that role on.  I'm not saying Eddie Royal is bad, I'm just saying that he needs a bit more experience.  Imagine our offense without Marshall.  Not only would we lose an explosive receiver, we would lose a double teamed receiver.  This would help the other team stop our running game in its tracks.  Although we would have some bad things to deal with without Marshall, there would also be some positives.  Say we trade Marshall for a receiver like Anquan Boldin.  We would no longer have a receiver that has legal issues.  We wouldn't have our #1 receiver coming off of hip surgery, and this whole off-season drama wouldn't be an issue anymore.

So what is it MHR faithful?  Do we want to keep Brandon Marshall, or trade him for more safer options?  I, myself am in favor of keeping Marshall.  Can he still get traded sure, but I would like to see him in orange and blue come this August.  This is a pressing issue.  We don't want to lose another great offensive weapon.  Let's see how this whole issue plays out.  This is where we'll see if Brandon is as mature as Jay.  Let's hope so!!!

The kid is young (24) and he will mature,

I had to question myself after one TD where he was going to pull something out of his uni pants. Stokely saved the day it seemed by running up to him and saying something to him. It almost looked likeTerrell Owensish type of behavior just wanted to jump out of him. Then the issues he had this off season. I don’t know, even though I voted keep him. I won’t pass judgement just yet. I’m sure there are things going on behind the sceens that are not privy to us.

He has to stay..

because he is under contract. He could forfiet the season and sit out, but that would be just plain stupid. I don’t think that the chi Bears QB rubbed that much “stupid” off onto BMarsh.

I think that the fact that he is projected to be at 100% by the start of the July training camp, is the main reason that he decided to hang out with his personal medical staff and just get better. Besides, McD himself said that if he had showed up, that he wouldn’t have been on the field anyway.

He has the play book so……

Thats my thought as well

Who would trade for him? Who else would offer him a big contract just yet? The kid just is getting awful advice and has impeccably bad timing.

Keep him if at all possible.

Let’s be frank, BMarsh comes with some baggage, but up to this point in his career, he has been more of a help than a hinderance to the Broncos. He ranks right up there with the best in the league as a bonafide #1 receiver.

What other receivers have his combination of youth and talent? His gaudy numbers over the past 2-3 seasons are at least partially due to his being the favorite target of our previous starting QB and a lot of targets, but when BMarsh is healthy and motivated, few receivers can compare with him in the NFL today.

Last year was a tough one for BMarsh, but even with his injuries, suspension and off the field distractions, he performed well. I can understand why he is unhappy with how his hip injury was dealt with last year and I can understand why he wants a new contract. He is approaching the end of his rookie contract, so this is a fairly natural time to address extending his contract and making sure that it reflects his performance and potential.

That being said, I can also see why the Broncos would be hesitant to give him a contract extension and a raise this summer. There is a fair amount of uncertainty concerning his health, pending legal action, and possibly even a suspension looming. But from a market perspective, these concerns makes a trade disadvantageous, and actually gives the Broncos leverage in contract extension talks.

If I were the Broncos, I would work as hard as possible to sign an extension this summer. I would put language in the contract that would protect the club from games missed due to suspensions and/or further legal troubles. I would also need to see evidence that his hip is recovering well enough for him to play at his previous level.

The longer they wait to resign him, the closer he gets to being a free agent and the higher the price tag will be. We are a better football team with Bmarsh than without him, we would not be able to get fair value in a trade, and it would be very difficult to replace him. Unless he goes off the deep end this summer, get it done somehow Broncs!

Could this little standoff because he probably won't be the initial target this year.

We all know that the “EGO” in the NFL has alot to do with how certain players react to certain circumstances. Could it be that BMarsh has begun to realize that the new offensive “Scheme” will take on a whole new look, with every player making contributions? This does seem strange as it is, BMarsh coming off an injured hip and the issues he had off the field. If I was BMarsh I would get on board with this new coach and the new system we have and try, as a team to get one of those rings they pass out every year. I see great things happening with this new offense, greater than I’ve seen in a long time. I for one am getting very excited about the up coming season, and my optimism is growing more and more every day. 13-3 Baby!!!

I don't know if I believe that fully bfree...

I mean, look at Randy Moss. He’s as egotistical as they get, but he went to New England KNOWING he wasn’t going to be the highlight player there and yet he’s stayed this long and still hasn’t seen a ring yet. I think the system being put in place is a great system for him to shine. I think he knows that too. He just wants more money I think.

You maybe right, I was just thinking, what if...

Hypothetically speaking, I look at all angles when dealing with individuals.

I really don’t have a case against him because I’ve decided that he should have his day in court like everyone else. As I’ve said before, He may have made some “bad” life choices but can still learn from it and move forward. if the Broncos decide not to keep him, then that’s fine because I know that he will find a “new” home. A change in atmosphere may help him tremendously and he will be working with new people. I simply want what’s best for him-if he has a problem then it should be treated so he can move on with his life. I’ll still be watching because wherever he ends up will see some superb skills and along the way should become a better person. Good Luck BMarsh!!

This is the NFL...

…a league where the contract is only binding to the player. Brandon certainly has some issues off the field (though how much of that is him and how much of that is the crazy women he hangs around with is debatable…), but on the field he has certainly over-performed to the relative value of his deal. I’m not going to complain if Brandon misses a mini-camp that he couldn’t participate in to hang around with a training staff that he doesn’t necessarily trust.

Now if he’s holding out once he’s healthy, missing practices that he needs to learn a new system, that’s a different story ;)

So frustrating...

If Denver could somehow swing a deal for Boldin, I’d say kick Marshall and his freaking attitude to the curb… I do not like the idea of Marshall playing elsewhere, but good gawd… I’m tired of the psycho dramas that have consumed this offseason.
