Extending the Olive Branch of Peace?
Since the beginning of the new year the Broncos have dismantled and rebuilt nearly a brand new team. The Broncos are very close to resembling a 1st year team just created out of thin air. The firing and hiring of a new Head Coach, assembling a new coaching staff, hiring a new GM, dealing with a disgruntled QB, aquiring F/A's, making draft selections, and OTA's. Whew, the Broncos have been busier that a cat covering up in a litter box.
Now the Broncos are confronted with another debacle with the Brandon Marshall saga. Marshall is now seeking a pay raise for his services rendered. He failed to show up for the three weeks of voluntary training and the 3 day mini camp even though he was in Pat Bowlens' office discussing his future so to speak. Brandon is under contract for this season for $2.198 million, that's not chump change but Marshall doesn't think it is enough. It was mandatory for Brandon to attend the three day camp to be a spectator not working out with the team because of his rehab. He chose not to go. The new system makes it important to be at every training session, there are the "little things" in the new system, Rod Smith was qouted as saying.
Health and off fields issues could be a big problem for the Broncos if they decide to trade him. He has a court date in Atlanta in August on a misdemeanor battery charge that may place in on suspension from the NFL. The Broncos have expressed they don't want to trade Marshall and might treat him as a hold out. The Broncos can fine him $9,079 for missing the three-day mandatory minicamp. In addition, the team could recoup $26,250 of the $420,000 signing bonus Marshall received as a fourth-round draft pick in 2006. If he doesn't report by Aug. 12, the Broncos can demand another $78,750.
Coach McDaniels has said that "they are doing everything they can to reconcile the situation so Brandon can return to the field". Until then, McDaniels said , "we're going to concentrate on the players that are here".
Coach McDaniels named Klye Orton as the starting QB this past weekend and oddly as it may be do you think McDaniels may have extended an "olive branch" to Marshall in naming Kyle the starter? There was a great post about the differences of the spiral with a right handed QB and a left handed QB. If Marshall feels he doesn't want to receive from a left handed QB then that might give him a gripe, thus expediting the selection of Orton. McDaniels extended the olive branch once already by holding up the #6 jersy at the owners meeting. Whether it was smoke for the MSM or an honest effort to keep Cutler it seemed legit.
The team is off until mid July before they have to return for training camp and if Marshall wants to hold out then let him sit the pine. Wouldn't it be something if McDaniels selects Gaffney and Royal as starters at wide out and Stokley as the slot. Make Chad Jackson, Kenny McKinley and Nate Swith as backups. I believe McDaniels is trying very hard to make a team that will perform and make us fans proud of who we are. He doesn't need this kind of hinderance on the field or in the locker room. What are your thoughts on this? "Olive branch of peace" or is Orton the real deal?
Thanks to everyone for your great posts and have a wonderful day.

I believe Orton earned the spot
It seems consistent with everything Coach McD has.

Orton's the best we have.
But who will guard the guards themselves?

Left versus right
I don’t think the handedness is really an issue for receivers. Orton has been better than Simms in the things that matter to McD.

Orton is the best guy we have right now for the job, Bates was tossed on the pile with the other Olive Branches
If Coach McDaniels had “offered” to keep Jeremy Bates on his staff in any capacity, it may have coaxed Culter into remaining a Bronco even with the trade rumours swirling about but Coach must have realized that a Bates/Cutler coalition scripting plays, ala Shanahan/Elway with Reeves, would have been a problem he’d be faced with at some point during the season. Coach has a distinct plan and coddling a player, any player, doesn’t seem to be a part of it.
I hope Marshall comes to his senses and soon. I love that spin move which in space seems to always net a few more yards.

Can't see the BMarsh situation affecting the QB choice
It’s just not in character for McDaniels and what (it appears) he wants to do.

the ball is in BM's court
as one poster put it and i think McD would have named orton the starter even if marsh wasnt pulling this stunt

I have a feeling McDaniels had his eye on Mr.Orton all the while.
McDaniels knew Cutler grew up being a “Bears” fan and he orchestrated the whole disgruntled QB scheme knowing that Chicago would in deed fall for the bait and bet the house on Jay. What a funny scenario if it were true and we can’t discount the fact that McDaniels knows quarterbacks. Maybe McDaniels was watching Kyle all along and saying to himself, those guys (the Bears Offensive Coordinators) couldn’t coach a fly to hit the swatter. This guy McDaniels is a genius. Sound far fetched? Devious minds scheme to succeed, just like any other corporate manager who has success.

I don't want to don the tinfoil hat...
But I do remember reading that they didn’t even bother waiting for the Jets’ (and other teams?) offer.

Orton is the real deal...
And if you ask me, not that you did, but I have a feeling McDaniels may have been forced to hold up that #6 jersey at the owner’s meeting – did you see his wry smile? He already knew there was no way Cutler would be our quarterback this year…

The $78,000 will be the least of Marshalls problems
“If he doesn’t report by Aug. 12, the Broncos can demand another $78,750.”
Marshall’s production has already been cut with no Cutler and the new system. If he doesn’t show up by Aug. 12th, his big pay day may never come. He’ll be so far behind the other receivers, now with injuries, off field issues and very little production, good luck! He may get that payday down the road IF he stays healthy. I would sure hate to see a last minute trade to New England for a 5 or 6 round draft pick in next years draft! The way I see it, Marshall has one chance for a big payday. He has no choice but to get into training camp, show what he can do through a few games. Oh, and wouldn’t hurt if he stood security or scrubbed floors at the battered women’s shelter at night or spoon fed the homeless. Anything for a little positive PR.
I would like Marshall to play for the Broncos for many years. Although, the more I get to know McDaniels and the system through MHR the less concerned I am. I would have been going crazy if this would have happened in January.
Bottom line, Marshall has one chance for a big payday and he needs to get his head on straight.

Orton is the real deal...
I keep going back to his days at Purdue and way he was used and played there. Chicago never came close to using his skill set with the offense they ran. Overall he has decent numbers, but there are a few times he lost focus and lost the ball. Every QB has those moments. Kyle will play with great passion and heart for the Broncos IMO. He’s a good choice and according to the reports and Simms himself is picking this offense up faster.
The problem with Brandon Marshall is he really doesn’t hold any of the cards. The Broncos hold them all. He is doing himself more harm than good by sitting in Orlando and demanding more money at this point. Something Pat Bowlen probably pointed out to him in their meeting over the weekend.

Sorry don't buy the theory
If that was the theory then Jerry Rice would of been raising hell when they switched from Montana to Steve Young.

Given...
…that Brandon Marshall is holding out under these circumstances, it would not shock me to learn that he’d whine about the handedness of his QB. That said, I doubt the guy that stared down Jay Cutler spends a lot of time worrying about such things. In fact, I get the idea that McDaniels would start a mule at QB if he thought that would make the team better.
I think the bigger problem here is that McDaniels failed to read the memo annointing Cutler and Marshall as the futures of this franchise. I don’t think it helped that both were already counting the money on the extensions they probably would have got from Shannahan this off season. Having to prove one’s self again was maybe a little too much to ask of two guys that led this team— as its collective heart and soul (not my assessment, but that of the MSM) no less— to 17-20 record since they’ve been here. I mean think about it— when you go 17-20, do your part to bring some bad PR to your franchise (whether its Wately in Marshall’s case, or Cutler talking smack that he never backed up), and rarely actually transcend the limitations of the talent around you through elevating your team, it makes perfect sense that you should be untouchable and beyond reproach. Then some kid with a big old and shameless set of brass ones comes along and has the temerity to suggest that you’re part of something larger than yourself, who wouldn’t get a little upset….?
I say kill them all and let McX sort it out. Run with the plan full speed, and if Brandon Marshall and Jay Cutler want to alienate an entire fan base somewhere else, then Godspeed and don’t let the door hit you on the rear on the way out. It sucks and 2009 will probably suffer for it, but in the long term— as long as Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall continue being themselves— there will be few people in Bronco Nation who truly regret this offseason when all is said and done. The risk, of course, is that Brandon Marshall and Jay Cutler could grow up and become the superstars they already think they are. But enough evidence suggests that growing up might never happen for either of them.
Time will tell, but in the butchered words of Michael Corleone— “This is the offseason where the Denver Broncos take care of all family business…” Unless Brandon Marshall has a long awaited epiphany of some sort very soon, he should be the next order of that family business.

Yes
I bet Brandon and Jay were promised big increases by the former regime and that is what is leading to this. I know a lot of people are blaming the current GM but these problems stem from the last GM and this particularly comes at a bad time. You know Xanders is busy getting all our rookies signed.
Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.

I don’t consider naming Kyle the starter to be an extension of the “olive branch.” When the trade went down, the Broncos set a “precedent” on how they handle their affairs. This is the part that alot of people didn’t think about because the book has been “written” on how to “get out.” The GM of the Giants let a player sit out all of the offseason and he showed up and played when the season started- I don’t blame him for doing it because he let the fire burn out. I don’t even think I read anywhere that he went after any money. This is why I really don’t have much sympathy for the Broncos/Cowboys front offices at this point because both are in “dire” need of a seasoned GM to handle this stuff. They reacted one way and didn’t think about the aftermath. This is why you heard alot of people in the “outside” world telling you not to trade Jay because we had already been through this stuff and it wasn’t going to end. Everyone has the “blueprint” and expect more people to use it and no one can fault them for it.

Can't believe that an olive branch was offered.
Orton earned the job on his own merits. Although I seldom agree with Woody’s epiphanies, he is absolutely correct in today’s article. Brandon needs to look on the bright side.. he is lucky to have a job. Brandon, come back to Denver and collect your $2.5 mil or leave us alone. We just can’t stand any more drama this year!

No olive branch here...
…and Denver should simply tell BMarsh to shut up and put up.
What Is This thing that athletes are thinking? As a contractor, when I make a deal with a client to perform a job for them, and the work that i do ends up being beyond exceptional, more than they even antisipated, Do I have a right to go back to them and ask for more money just because everything worked out so well on the project? NO I DON’T!
I beleive a deal is a deal, and that is the way that it should be viewed by players in the NFL. The incentives were written into his contract and He earned his raise. Now he needs to be happy with it and go back to work. His only beef should be with his agent for not getting him a better origonal contract. In my case, I do accept gratuities, (and have often gotten them) and a new deal for BMarsh should be done only if it is offered by the Broncos, NOT because it is demanded!
It is better to keep silent, and appear to be wise, then to ramble on and remove all doubt! The Wisest Man, Solomon.

If the injuries are not a concern
and he doesn’t get suspended for the misdemeanor charge in August then 2-3 games into the season give him a deal. But not until then and tell him straight up, look dude you are under contract to perform, “Show Me the Performance” and we’ll show you the money. Simple as that.
