Broncos sign Casey Wiegmann to 2-year deal

A little bit of good news for Broncos fans.  The Broncos and center Casey Wiegmann have reportedly agreed to a 2-year contract.

Wiegmann, who was actually under contract for 2009, made his first Pro Bowl in 2008 after starting all 16 games for injured Tom Nalen.  After considering retirement, Wiegmann decided to come back, but voiced his desire for a new deal.

Wiegmann deserved the deal, and most importantly went about it in all the right ways.  Wiegmann was involved in every offseason workout with the team but one, an excused absence for a family function.

That, my friends, is how you handle your business.  The Broncos signed Wiegmann for the reasons I stated on MHR Radio last week.  It made football sense to bring him back at a bigger number.

Congrats to Wiegmann for getting a well-deserved bump in pay while showing the younger guys how business inshandled in the National Football League!

I'll take a great center

over a dozen wide receivers any day. Top notch centers are hard to find. WRs are a dime a dozen given the right system.

Cool

wonder what the boo-birds/he’s running everybody out of town will make of this?

Sorry, that was uncalled for.

It’s great news and it’s nice to see a bright spot amid the June gloom.

That IS good news

I hope Brandon is paying attention but I’m not counting on it. Still, it’s relief that a key member of the line has been taken care of. I only hope we see more good news of this type.

Congrats and well deserved to Casey!!
First renegotiated contract in the McDaniels era, right? I really like McD’s priorities, his judge of character and his sense of fairness. Bobby Turner stays, Rick Dennison stays, the Veteran lineman gets a pay raise. This team can really go far if things keep working out this way!

I concur with everything written in these replies

1. This is the right way to go about your business.
2. This keeps our line looking strong for at least two more years.

I wonder if Marshall was healthy would he have even shown up then? I know that he can’t participate, but being a member of the team is worth more than you can know. When you decide to spend your rehab apart from your teammates, you’re only hurting yourself. I can see Cutler taking advantage of his absence by texting him… “Dude, you gotta ask for a trade. Come play with me in Chicago. Don’t let this get out, but the recievers here SUCK!!”

Great News!

Wiegman is the high character example this team needs and the type of guy Marshall should be paying attention as to how to gain a raise.

Wiegman made Cutler and Marshall better because of his solid blocking and anchoring the Broncos steller line, and I believe he can make Orton and Loyd or whoever we run out at WR better.

Management made the right move here...

Casey handled himself like a professional and attended every OTA/ workout (minus one which he was excused). The situation was resolved with both the player and the Broncos benefiting. So happy that our stellar offensive line is in tact.

Marshall take note on how to handle yourself…

What is the likelihood, based on the past,

that our incredible O line will be just as effective this year? I love that everyone is back, but I see a lot on these posts that assumes Clady, Hillis, Royal, etc. will have similarly effective seasons in 2009 compared with 2008. Believe me, I hope so, and I hope they improve, but what are the chances (knock on wood, God forbid) that a few of these guys were one-hit wonders and just caught a few teams off guard?

I understand, but the way things are going

I don’t feel comfortable saying “OK – that position is safe” or “that player is safe.” I can’t put all these items on a shelf and not worry about them anymore, because every time I think something is sacred, it’s the next thing gone.

I hope you’re right. I’m just all jumpy now.

by HarvJNep2n on Jun 17, 2009 6:00 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

we just need to get you from "jumpy"

to “aware and prepared to jump.” (not that kind of jump).

I agree, it would be foolish to say, “Well, that’s that.” for any position on this team, but like Bradley said, getting the line back in its former incarnation, given how SURE we are that it ACTUALLY WAS a good line (as opposed to some of the more…optimistic feelings we had for parts of the team..) is better than NOT getting it back (again, as opposed to some parts of the team that could benefit tremendously from an upgrade)

Will they be as great as last year? Depends on how you measure it, and since the stats are few and far between for Oline, we have to have a pretty open mind in terms of the standard we use. QB sacks will be particularly relevant next year, if we run more as some posters have hypothesized. I’d like to see them keep a pretty clean penalty record next year as well. They faced some good ends talent last year, maybe this year there will be a bigger test? I know we have Demarcus Ware, Merriman may be back (huge test if he is healthy and up to speed). Who else? (this research: “DEs we may be facing in 09” is worhty of a fanpost)

there is legitimate worry of a sophmore slump for the Tackles, Casey is a sure thing, I think, and Kuper is a sure thing as well. Will hamilton start to show some wear and tear? Put me in the camp that thinks he does better than he did last year, which was still pretty darn good).

Something to think about, for sure, but no need to be jumpy. :)

There is no army so powerful as an idea whose time has come.

by Jeremy Bolander on Jun 17, 2009 6:49 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks, Styg.

There are several factors to consider, amongst the ones you mentioned. Merriman returns, and we play Ware, as you mentioned. I would also imagine players will be gunning for Clady this season, especially those who got burned by him last season. He has a rep to destroy now. But maybe those two tackles will have a little healthy bet going as to who allows the fewest sacks. Another concern on the sack front that I’ve not heard much about here (more on the Bears’ blogs, since they seem to be enamored with the guy) is Cutler’s sense of pressure in the pocket. He did a good job of buying time to prevent sacks. I have heard some good things about Orton’s footwork and some bad things, but how does it compare with Jay’s?

Btw, anyone hear Jim Rome rip

Brandon Marshall this morning? He basically said, this is all on you. Brandon. (After he saying he felt like Cutlergate was more McDaniels’ fault, but this is all Marshall.) And he said the Broncos have to hold firm, they can’t cave in and trade him or they’ll look bad, and won’t get anywhere near close to him in talent back. Nothing much new there.
But was kinda good to hear.
Jim Rome is the only national, obnoxious radio host who I kind of like because he’s actually pretty bright and generally knows what he’s talking about, even if he can be a bit harsh.

Brilliant timing

Many years ago, I commented on an item about politics that I read in a newspaper – I was fairly naive, then. My Chicago father looked at me incredulously and asked me, “Son, do you EVER think that things in politics happen by accident?” He was usually right on things like this, and that time was no exception. So it is in most NFL offices, and it was this time.

The Broncos just announced for all to hear that service is rewarded, trusting them by showing up has good consequences and that they recognize good players and aren’t uncomfortable paying them. Whatever Marshal’s demons, and they seem to be many, the Broncos just took an opportunity to make him look even more foolish, if that was possible.

Timing is Everything

Maybe the Broncos FO is figuring out how to play the PR game.

Even the release of Boss Bailey, is a positive because of the release being in time for him to solicit other teams.

and this from Boss ""I wasn’t really surprised by it. I understand how the business goes," Bailey said. “It’s a business call. I appreciate everything they’ve done for me since I’ve been here. Once you’re a Bronco, you’re always a Bronco.”

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also DREAM; not only plan, but also BELIEVE.

by Broncobh on Jun 17, 2009 3:37 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

causation or timing?

very intersting point Bear.

Are the Broncos manipulating a set of opportunities (I think the manipulation would be mild at this point: you don’t just throw together a contract)?

Or does the revelation that we might have traded Brandon’s in the big picture (Lloyd for Marshall) mean that we recovered some cap and cash to guarantee that we would be in a good spot with Casey’s deal?

There is no army so powerful as an idea whose time has come.

by Jeremy Bolander on Jun 17, 2009 4:26 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good points, styg

I have to admit that what struck me the most was dumping some salary, picking up a not-very-expensive receiver and signing Weigmann all at once. The FO knew exactly what was happening. Was it all a grand manipulation? Yes – and probably no, in that they were working out how to get Casey the contract that he wanted, but also, I suspect, wanted to see who is going to come to camp and who isn’t. When Casey did the OTAs and showed his colors (and Marshall balked) it got easier to do the things they wanted to.

By the way – I’m glad that they dumped Bailey. I honestly didn’t expect him for more than a few games, and we’re deep at that position.

Somebody is just trying to get our hopes up that things are moving in a possitive upward flow towards a 13 -3 season! Great news and congrats to a Classy Casey act! You deserve it man, and thanx 4 the good example on how business Should B Done in the NFL!

It is better to keep silent, and appear to be wise, then to ramble on and remove all doubt! The Wisest Man, Solomon.
