"I knew its what I had to do if I wanted to work out a deal. And it worked out that way."

its sad
when you have to point out the fact that you need to act like an adult.

Apples and Oranges
The Marshall situation bears no resemblance to Weigmann’s.
Whether he acts like an adult or child will make no difference on him getting a new deal at this point in the offseason. He needs to get healthy and out of legal limbo before any team would pay him the kind of money he wants. Then he needs to show he is still the same player without Cutler. Even if Marshall were at Dove Valley every day kissing McD’s butt, Denver would be beyond foolish to give him a fat new deal until his several other issues are resolved. Marshall has no leverage so I don’t see how taking the high road would do much of anything for him.

Agreed!
I wonder what they will do with him when no team offers any thing ‘serious’, i hope he gets healthy has a good year with us and wants to stay and sign after the year because he sees the potential of this team.. I also hope the FO doesn’t bite on a lesser offer just to get picks next year. This was a pretty bad time for him to kick up a fuss about his pay check.. he should know that what he is right now, not last season but now, is a big fat risk and any team would be stupid to pay him what he wants.
I get the feeling this is not just about the uncapped year next year but also about his hip.. maybe there is a serious problem with it and i guess that could be one reason why he has stayed away because he feels that would damage his chances even more… That is pure speculation and probably not true but if he is worried about his health then i guess his only route is going for more money now not next year.

I think the two are more similar than you realize.
The professional way for BM to handle this would be to acknowledge all of the shortcomings you cited, and try to build a new contract contingent upon resolving those issues. For all we know, he may have done that, but I find it difficult to believe he would risk contingencies when he is so uncertain about his health, and his ability to put up great stats in any given scheme. I am sure the Broncos would have been delighted with such an attempt. You are right Marshall has no leverage, but I think you are wrong that the high road would have been worthless. If anything, it would have put the fans solidly behind him, for whatever that’s worth.

Image being one of Brandon's issues...
Taking the high road in this instance would be a sign of maturity… Something we’ve all been waiting for Marshall to develop, and more importantly, one of the reasons why the Broncos are hesitant to make a large investment in him.

I don't get it
Yes it is nice that Casey showed up for OTA’s. And yes he deserve a pay raise and a new contract and I am glad he got one. But am I wrong that Casey’s postion was that he was going to retire before playing under his current contract? I don’t have a problem with that attitude (if I am recalling correctly) but it does seem relevant if this is going to become a Wiegmann vs Marshall debate.

Well..
…that’s the difference between the situation of an old timer and a youngster like BM.

Which part?
That an old timer will prepare as if he is gonna play even if he thinks it might not happen? Or that he can threaten to retire and have it be taken serious? Won’t argue with either, but not sure what exactly you went.

I think Casey was weighing if playing for the Vet Minimum was worth the work and potential wear on his body...
and when your approaching retirement… well, you probably start to weigh those issues a little more seriously. What is all the physical preparation worth… what is time away from my family worth… what is waking up every morning feeling like I got run over by a truck worth…
Heck, I’m 35 and I have to think about it every time I go play softball or basketball… because Lord knows how I pay for it in the morning. I can’t imagine what the pro’s are going through…

Exactly
Casey signed a vet minimum contract a year ago, after being let go by KC, when they were moving to a bigger O line. Casey was, at the time, just insurance for Nalen, and not even likely to make the team. But, he found himself in a great position after Nalen went out, and turned it into a pro bowl year. To continue to play for the vet minimum or just call it a day was the issue for him. Really different than the issue for BM, whatever his issue is.

just for depth of discussion
I’ll bring up Casey’s comment when they brought him in as insurance: “I didn’t come here not to start.” Typical fluff statement, used to bolster one’s moral, or improve one’s image? Perhaps. But from what we saw of Casey last year, I would say that he fully expected to come in and push Nalen out of a job. We’ll never know whether that happens or not, but we do know that Weigmann’s “games played” streak remains active, despite the fact that being cut last year and signed behind a guy like Nalen came to pass; an unlikely scenario to maintain an active streak of that nature, for sure.
And the active streak stands at 127 games started, longest amongst centers, third longest among offensive linemen.
There is no army so powerful as an idea whose time has come.

I agree that Marshall should act like an adult, but I’m dubious that the Broncos would give Marshall the money he wants if he would just have shown up for all the OTAs.

Why not, thats what Casey did---The high road is meeting responsibility,

because you’re right, it can’t be.

Congrats to Casey. You earned and deserved it.
Who’da thunk it? Ask for a raise. Show up for work. Work hard. Do your job. Get a raise.
So very foreign.
