Brandon "The Beast" Marshall - A Keeper
This isn't going to be long and well thought out. I just want to toss my perspective out there on what kind of player I believe Brandon Marshall is and what he can bring to this team.
I've heard a lot of talk lately about how Brandon Marshall was the most targeted receiver last year, and that his stats are somehow less impressive because of that.
Thinking back to last season, seemingly every week featured a new no-name running back stepping up to the gauntlet. None of them made it out the other side. Top that off with Jeremy Bates' allergy to running plays, and you get a lot of passes. Then, consider Jay Cutler's habit of locking on to Marshall and throwing him the ball, even when he was covered well by two or three defenders. That is how Marshall became the most targeted receiver last season.
This means our team was not a mystery to opposing defenses. One thing was guaranteed, Cutler -> Marshall. So what did defenses do? They game-planned to try and stop Marshall. It didn't work. Nobody could stop him. Nobody can stop The Beast! As Guru said last training camp: "Let me just put my thoughts towards #15 to you this way - Brandon Marshall is a man among boys."
What I'm saying is I want Marshall on this team. Injuries? Baggage? Whatever. If he's playing football, he belongs on the Broncos. He is a special player. New England made it work with Randy Moss. Lets see the Broncos make it work with Brandon Marshall.

I voted yes, but he doesn't want to be a Bronco anymore. Cutler didn't either.

I'm OK facing Cutler once in a while
But if Marshall gets his act together, I don’t want to play against him ever. Let him sit on the bench if he doesn’t want to play, better than going against him.

Agreed, Zappa
I voted yes, but we don’t keep him at all costs. It’s just not that simple. You can’t say that injuries and off the field issues don’t matter because they do. If he’s hurt and not the same player, then he’s not worth a huge contract. If he’s suspended and not playing, well, same thing. If he’s healthy, wants to play (with the current contract or a new one that’s incentive based and heavy with clauses protecting the Broncos financially) and stays out of trouble, then of course, I ABSOLUTELY want him here. But I think it’s a little naive to say he should be here at all costs, and that injuries and baggage and desire to be here don’t matter. No player is worth all of that. Especially a receiver, even one with Marshall’s talent. No one is denying Marshall is special, but so was T.O. and Chad Johnson (neither are as special now, but at one point were two of the absolute best in the league). Would you ignore all of their baggage, even in their prime, just to try to take advantage of his abilities? I wouldn’t….not ever! And we’ve seen what happened to teams that tried. And Randy Moss was also different because since he’s been in New England he’s all but been a model citizen. That’s not really the case right now with Marshall. Now, I don’t think Marshall’s nearly as bad as T.O. or Chad Johnson (or whatever he goes by these days), but the point is you can’t simply be blinded by someone’s talent to the point that you ignore significant faults and risk. You don’t build long term, consistent winning football teams that way. Just look at some of the talented but troubled players Shanahan brought in over the years. Almost always ended badly. I want Marshall here, but because of his situation (injuries and legal troubles that could lead to suspensions) it has to be mostly on the Broncos terms. If not, then the team has to do what’s best for the team.

Same here
(OMGosh…I just agreed with Broncoman…the end is near my friends!)
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

Same here as well...
I don’t care if he’s Jesus with a helmet on; if he doesn’t want to play here, he doesn’t want to play here.

he wouldn’t want to play any where else.

I Agree Completely
But it’s the baggage…and the fact that he would behave like this after all that has been tolerated. He’s created yet another huge distraction from a totally baseless bargaining position. In short, he’s showing the same judgement that earned him his own “Outside the Lines” episode. I’ve lost hope that he is growing up.
For me, that’s the final straw. If the Broncos keep him, great. If they don’t, great.

Personally, I do want him to remain a Bronco.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean he belongs on the team.

"One of these things is not like the others..."
He might turn it around… But as it stands now, Brandon doesn’t fit the psychological profile of a McDaniels Denver Bronco. Of course, until his hip is back to 100% and he regains all of the feeling in his hands, he doesn’t fit the physical profile of a wide receiver at all.
With that said, one of the things I haven’t seen in any of the discussions was Brandon’s blocking ability. He’s been known to level some linebackers and safeties, so even if he doesn’t get the ball thrown his way as much as he would with Cutler staring him down every play, he still has the potential to make a massive contribution to the offense.
I voted “no” but I want it to be YES!

I would like to see Brandon play for us...I really would
but my brain is already creating a ‘spin’ as to ‘why we don’t need him.’

PAY THE FREAK
- is a freak of nature, un-stoppable plain an simple. Put all the terms you need in the contract, but he needs to stay in Denver. Make no mistake this is all about the money. IF you offer him a decent contract this will all be over. This offense will not be what it needs to be with out him, not to mention we will never get equal trade value. You’ve paid Cassey now pay Brandon, end of story.
WE WILL DOMINATE!
by destamator on Jun 18, 2009 7:42 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Well not quite the end of the story...d
I want him to stay too but not bad enough to sacrifice cap space on a gamble that we don’t have to take. HE’S STILL UNDER CONTRACT, plus he’s hurt plus he’s one slap away from a major suspension. IMHO there’s no comparison to how he and Casey handled their negotiations.

100% Agreed, asinsoin
destamator, you might want to read (or reread) both of TSG’s posts regarding the Brandon Marshall situation (as well as some of the underlying user comments).
There are some issues covered there that you are overlooking, regardless of your viewpoint. I’m not saying you’re necessarily wrong or right. Just that the situation is a bit more complicated than your comments make it out to be.
