Jerry and Joe a tale of 2 agents.
The contrast between Brandon's debacle and Casey's handling of his renegotiation has lead me to this post. I'm fairly new to the scene here (1 mo) so forgive and redirect me if this has been covered. The question I'd like to throw out is "what is the role of the agent (not you AJF!) and which agent would you choose ?" First I'd like to contrast the 2 agents.
BM is represented by Kenard Mcguire, he is a UT grad and played pro ball for a couple of years. This from his Bio.
"We pride ourselves on educating our players," he says. "We make it our primary responsibility to teach our clients their financial options from the minute the ink dries on their contracts."
Kennard also represents Shaun Rogers, Javon walker, TJ Who'syourmama, Torry Holt, Shawn Springs and Dre' Bly to name a few. In Kennard's defense the testimonials from his website rave about his work ethic and integrity.
The other side: Google and LexusNexus search of relative articles shows a frequent tactic advising clients to hold out and then not returning calls from the team (sound familiar? we'll get to Bus in a minute). Also found one article comparing him to a used car salesman.
CW is represented by Joe Linta he also represents Joe Flacco, Matt Burk, Todd Herremans and Willie Colon. Here's a testimonial from Todd Herreman "I respect him. It’s not about the money with Joe. From the first conversation on, he was the agent everyone else had to live up to."
and from his website http://www.jlsports.net/aboutus.html
Our staff is made up of former coaches and players who know, first-hand, the right way to get things done.
The other side: Can't find any negative articles but it's pretty obvious joe doesn't have the starpower that Kennard does either. More after the jump.
So the question is "If you were an NFL player with an expiring contract which agent would you choose?Considering the value I ascribe to this forum what better place to analyze the dilemna. It looks like the odds of getting a big $$ contract are better with Jerry but the chances of getting it done without damaging your reputation and the team you play for are probably better with Joe. I could easily take the side for Jerry and say it is all about the money so let's not kid ourselves. You've only got so many years in the league and you better make them count. After all this is a business and your team will cut you in a second once your value to them is gone. On the other side I would argue, how important is your reputation, character and legacy? How much money is enough and does the end justify the means?
It's an interesting study but to me it looks like the agent that a player chooses says a lot about their approach to the game. Here's another interesting comparison. Drew Rosenhaus lists: T.O. , Kellen Winslow, Shockey, Plaxico, Och Cinco and Willis Mcgahee as his top clients. Tom Condon Lists: Peyton, Eli, L.T. , Drew Brees and Chad Pennington. Oh and as promised earlier Bus Cook's top clients: Brett Favre, hewhocannotbenamed, Steve Mcnair and Randy Moss.

Nice post....
I see player agents as one of two things, either a buffer between the player and team management or an amplifier for the player only. I would prefer the buffer style as they seem be the ones who deal more on factual based info vs. the other style which is emotional or personality based. Just my opinion though. All of them are contract lawyers by trade I believe.

Maybe a better way to pose the question
Is how much of BM and JC’s decisions came as a result of the agent they chose?

Yep, solid rep.
and it looks like a good balance of getting the most money with the least distress. Plus he returns phone calls.

Excellent post, asinsoin
I want options with my agent. I want a guy who says, “We can pull a b.s. move and do X, or we can do the classy thing. You’re choice.”
Naturally, I would go for the b.s. move and work the money grab, but I would at least want the options. :-)

Rosenhaus
only has the “what-can-i-have-this-player-do-that-buys-me-an-island-and-strokes-my-hungry-ego?” option. (i think in his spiral bound manual it’s called “option 1” and “option 1A”.
I voted Condon. his people seem to do pretty well for themselves without becoming T.O.s. although, that might be a chicken and egg question…

Was just kiddin ox
Though the more you look at each agents client list the pattern emerges. The chicken and egg question to me is “Does the agent facilitate the greedy player or vice versa”. Seems to me that in BM’s case he was starting to come around (at least saying the right things) until contract negotiations time and then he went 180. I Gotta believe that Mcguire had something to say there considering his philosophy.

i got ya
… i took it as kidding, and reserve the right to send it back your way when you least expect it. look for the fan post titled “proof that asinsoin is really al davis”…
not really though.
as far as BMarsh and the chicken/ egg thing, i agree that he seemed to be trying harder but he’s always had that, um, wide receiver persona. so i think he still fits in the client list pattern theory. it really is pretty impressive how certain players seem to fit with certain agents. crazy stuff.

I chose Condon
For the same reason as broncfan. I can say that my character is more important than money, mainly because that is the way I was raised. However, I am 46 right now and , to be quite honest, if I had to choose an agent when I was in my 20’s, I most likely would have gone for the money. I can’t kid myself. And unless I had some serious guidance at that point, I might not have even done any research on any agents either.
I believe an agent should provide some financial advice to his client. I mean, that IS in his best interests I would think.
But hey, they are Lawyers right?
With the 12th pick, the Broncos select Knowshon Moreno - Roger Goodell
That'll move the chains - Andy Samberg

Hey I'm not blaming any of these guys for chasing the $$$
but there seems to be 2 opposing thoughts on how to get there. The sit out, pout, work the media and demand a contract route and the show up, prove your worth and your character and trust that mgmt will reward you route. I guess the word trust and lawyers don’t typically go in the same sentence though, good point.
