Aussie Meanderings: The suck list and the double standards of the MSM.

Hey Everyone,

Just another irrevelant look at whats been going on in the world of the NFL and in particular Broncos football.

Read on.......

Star-divide

1/ Can everyone give me a HELL YEAH for the double standard reporting of the MSM. 2 such points have really stood out to me. Firstly, we are getting panned for moving to a 3-4 ....absolutely killed......with the MSM saying we have no personnel. On the other hand, Green Bay is doing a great job with it, and apparently they have forgotten the Cheifs are moving to the 3-4 as well. Now, am I just stupid, but when I look at the line ups, does not Denver have MORE players suited for a 3-4 than either of those teams. Basing Green Bays conversion on the acquisition of BJ Raji is insane...he has NEVER played NT in a 3-4. Guess the team that has a player that has played NT in the NFL? If you guessed Denver than take a chug on the Kool Aid!.Apparently BJ Raji is SO good they he will be a n instant hit. Here's something weird, Carlton Powell has better run stopping stats than BJ had at college, has none of the character issues and was a beast on double teams. Go figure! Bucky Brooks in this mornings Horse Tracks speaking how the Texans explosive offense makes them a play off contender? Huh. Apparently it does not make Denver one though. I will take Orton over Schaub anyday, and the only guy I would take from the Texans would be Andre Johnson. Oh well, guess we suck!

2/ Speaking of SUCK, here is Boydy's suck list. This is all in fun and feel free to add to it:

  • Solomon Wilcots: His inane rambling about morale is starting to kill me. No facts on this. His lack of knowledge, and on football generally, from an ex player is astonishing.
  • Adam Schein: he IS amateur hour.
  • Mark Kiszla: His article yesterday says all you need to know!
  • The Denver Post.
  • Dave Kreiger: When did being a moron become such an artform.
  • Kenard McGuire: Give some advice my man instead of trying to fill your pockets with Benjamins. Is he going for the Bus Cook Agent of the Year Award????
  • ESPN.
  • The raiders (no capital letters please!)
3/ Boydy's NON SUCK List:
  • Josh McDaniels: Who knows how this season will go, but the kid has major cojones, a plan is passionate and an absolute professional. Fight on young man.
  • MHR.
  • Tom Curran: I know, cant believe that I am saying this. Read this. Curran praises the Broncos for dispensing with Jay Cutler and  adding fire power to our secondary. He does pan us, but you will never guess what for?? He pans us for arriving LATE to the Matt Cassel stakes....now this is one slant you have not seen from ANYONE in the MSM.
  • Eddie Royal.
  • Brandon Lloyd.
  • Elvis Dumervil.
  • Our draft.
  • The NEW members on MHR...welcome. The OLD members are muy cool as well.
4/ Why does ANYONE speak records, let alone Super Bowl winners in June?

5/ I give thumbs up to both the Broncos organziation and Boss Bailey. Boss is a classy individual, who was clearly touched by the way the Broncos handled his release. Top marks to Josh McDaniels and Xanders for giving Boss enough time to find other suitors. I welcome business practices like this. Well done all around.

6/ Congratulations Casey Weigmann! A classy, true professional that handled his business well. You got what you deserved. Thumbs up to Joe Linta as well. This was handled well by all parties.

7/ Rod Smith is THE man. His interview on Denver Broncos TV was awesome. I wish a certain WR would heed this great mans advice, and take note of how Casey Weigmann handled his business to get a TRUE grasp on how to be a professional. Hello, Brandon....are you there? Brandon? Kenard.....hello?

8/ Brandon Marshall: OK, and this is MY personal opinion, and this is coming from one that was and still hopes to be his biggest supporter. GET BACK TO WORK YOU SOOK! A man always handles his own business, but NEVER lets it effect those around him that rely upon him. Brandon has been saying all the RIGHT things in the off season, about being a team guy and behind the guys with the rings. TIME TO STEP UP NOW YOUNG MAN. He has the potential not only to be a GREAT player, but a GREAT team leader and captain. I cant believe he is asking for a trade and new contract now.....it does not make ANY sense! The more I think about it, the MORE it does not jive. Now, I am a conspiracy guy, but it leads me to beleive, or at least entertain 2 things:
  • His hip injury is a LOT worse than we think and he is trying to get his money now, or the ongoing prognosis for his hip is more rapid degeneration that puts his long term career in jeopardy.
  • Is there something still underlying from his past where he needs money NOW! He has already been asked for hush money twice, so there is already a history of that. Has he done something that can be proven that is hanging over him like a Damocles Sword that could bring his IMMEDIATE career in jeopardy.
There has been a lot floating around that his numbers will go down with the new system, but this whole argument is based on the fact that NFL player evaluators know NOTHING and would not take that into account. As I have said before, BM needs to prove he is a CLUTCH number 1 WR and not just a glorified possession reciever that he was last year. Using Randy Moss as an example, his numbers are not as good as when he was at Minnesota, but who would you rather have now if YOU were a NFL Coach: The Moss now or the one in Minnesota????

9/ I am happy Kyle Orton is starting. Throw stats out the window, I only look for wins and intangibles in my QB's. Teams and individual players WANT to play and win for KO. Every report from EVERY player have been nothing but glowing as far as KO's ability to lead in the locker room and the field. We already know that Urlacher was VERY sorry to see him go. I also look at Brandon Lloyd's comments about his arm being more good news. I will leave you with this thought guys: Kyle Orton is 21-12 as a starter in Chicago in a system he was NEVER a fit for. I will take that record any day!

10/ I love our rookies. They are already getting involved in the community and becoming leaders. Stoked!

Thanks everyone, and hope you enjoy the post.

Peace!

Re: Tom Curran

He does a good job with the Cutler thing and the firepower to the secondary story (I didn’t know that Brian Dawkins was the NFC Defensive player of the month last December – not exactly over the hill, apparently).
But he’s just blowing air on the ‘Denver too late on the Cassel’ thing’. The real thing is, if McDaniels had ever really wanted Cassel, he could have gotten him. So, guess why Cassel is not in Denver?

The sage is full of anxiety and indecision in undertaking anything, and so he is always successful.

I think his point was...

that Cassel was franchised in early Feb and everyone in the NFL knew the Pats were shopping him around. If McD et. al. were interested in Cassel they should have done their due diligence in advance. Instead they were caught with their pants down and failed to assess the potential blowback of exploring the trade. It was a rookie mistake.

Given that, I think they made the best of a bad situation – which I think is why Curran gave them a plus and a minus.

by SlowWhiteGuy on Jun 22, 2009 10:44 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess it depends on your take on the situation...

since we don’t know all of the facts. I’m not convinced McD and the Broncos were “caught with their pants down” because I think the trade was initiated by the other teams. We listened, said no, should have been end of story. Cutler and his agent, and then of course the media, were the ones who said and/or assumed we wanted Cassel and yet somehow simply missed out. I agree with bradley that if we had in fact wanted Cassel, badly enough anyway, then he’d be here right now. McDaniels (and Xanders it appears) doesn’t do ANYthing without thorough planning, due diligence, preparation and purpose. Do you really think he all of a sudden at the last minute said, “Oh wait, maybe I want my old QB Cassel”? He probably knew the minute he received the phone call he was hired as the head coach that he might want Cassel and began to examine and review the entire situation (Cutler, Cassel, trade options, etc.) Of course he wanted Cassel (he has said as much) and, who knows, maybe was one of the parties to initiate the talks about bringing him here….probably long before any of us even knew about it. But I still believe McD, Xanders and Bowlen when they say THEY were the ones who said no because the deal wasn’t worth it to them (many of the facts we do know support much of this as well). Anyway, just more dead horse beating.

I really wonder what the MSM will be saying come mid-season if we do happen to be doing well (Lord knows what they’ll be saying if we’re not). They’re NEVER held accountable for anything they say and half the time try to make it look like they “knew all along this team would be good” (or bad, as the case may be). I don’t care if you aren’t on board with McD and the new Broncos, but at least come up with something valid or logical to support it. It’s absolutely astounding how ignorant, misinformed or completely idiotic these so called “experts” in the MSM can be. Not that it’s terribly surprising, I suppose. They have jobs because they are personalities….entertainers. Nothing more. It’s all about ratings and pandering to the masses, not actual football news (which is really no different than all MSM…..MSNBC or Fox News anyone?). So I’ll just keep drinking the Kool-Aid and stick with MHR, thank you very much!

Sour Grapes

Is the MSM whining and writing negative articles because of lack of access to the Broncos? I remember one story by Woody Paige complaining that, in effect, he didn’t have the same ability to talk with McD that he did with Shanahan.

As a fan I wish there was more access. But that’s not McD’s job! He needs to be addressing the team first, foremost and unrelentingly.

HELL YEAH the MSM has a double standard! They universally praise the quality of our draft picks and then say we had a horrible draft, they universally denigrate our defense and completely ignore the additions and subtractions we made to the defense through free agency and UDFA let alone the potential contributions of players we retained. They go on to spew their conclusions without ANY supporting information. As an example, the Broncos “morale” is taking a hit? Come on! Name some names! I’ve not heard a single player now on the team with the possible exception of Scheffler having any morale problem. Even BMarsh has not said a negative word about the team or coaches.

Talk about double standards, I almost fell off my chair today when I read Peter King’s article in SI:

I think the Bengals, as woebegone as they’ve been, can be models for something: doing what they said they’d do. … And though I think they erred in not taking the reported offer of two first-rounders from Washington for Johnson in 2008, they kept their word. No trade. … And now we’ve got Brandon Marshall who wants out, and apparently he’s found a sympathetic ear in owner Pat Bowlen. The Broncos need to take a long view of this instead of the short view. The short view is, "Let’s get rid of this unhappy jerk.‘’ The long view is, "This guy’s a great player, he’s a handful, but if we trade him, we’re handing everyone else in the locker room a blueprint for how to shoot his way out of town. Plus, we won’t get real value for him.’’

He goes on to say:

I can’t believe I just told the Denver Broncos to study the Bengals. Frightening.

So which opinion do you really hold, Peter King? That the Bengals should be emulated for not getting two 1sts for Chad Johnson, aka Ocho Cinco, and obstinately “keeping their word” or that he can’t believe that the Bengals didn’t take the two 1sts and that he just gave poor advice? I believe the Bengals were boneheads!

inferred morale

Yes, I caught the Wilcots line about morate. It’s embarrassing to admit that Wilcots is a fellow alum.

As an example, the Broncos "morale" is taking a hit? Come on! Name some names!

Solomon has “inferred” a morale problem, which he bases on the reaction that players ought to have to the events he believes occurred. That’s why I’m an empiricist, I like to see evidentiary confirmation before engaging in long chains of weak induction.

It is indeed odd that the players have been saying all those positive things lately; perhaps if they only read more of the MSM they would realize how truly unhappy they are.

Colinski,

That’s it, precisely. Since the MSM writers don’t have any real information, they put stories together by thinking, “well, if it were me, and the situation was like this, (I think), then they are probably feeling this way…so this is the way it actually IS – and I can tell everybody that.” Complete fracking nonsense – it’s just a guess, and worse – it could be easily disproven if “Solomon” actually looked into it a little bit. But I’m sure he’s far too busy and important to worry about the facts.

Value and Short Views

We would get value for Brandon. Current value for the receiver takes into account his injury and off field issues. Other teams paying are hoping that in the future his stock would rise but there are no guarantees. You can’t just assume he is going to have a certain playing form or that he will bring it back to Denver.

The Bengals missed the boat in trading Chad. I don’t buy this whole “Blueprint out of town theory.” I am not convinced that trading a player for being a problem is going to lead to a situation of rats abandoning a ship. Instead they held onto a guy far past the sale date and everyone knows it.

Buy low sell high, imo.

Not So Weird Carlton Powell

Stats = Height 6’ 3" | Weight 300
http://www.denverbroncos.com/page.php?id=498&contentID=8663
Finished his Virginia Tech career as the only Division I-A player IN HISTORY who held opponents to negative rushing yards (-13 yds. on 106 att.) on running plays directed at him
From SI: POSITIVES: Explosive interior lineman who makes plays in every direction. Quick off the snap, immediately alters his angle of attack, and chases the ball around the field. Displays terrific quickness, keeps his feet driving up the field, and effective defending the run. NEGATIVES: Easily blocked from the action or engulfed by opponents. Marginal pass-rusher.

Watching his Virginia Tech play, he looks like he has great footwork, quick lateral movement, terrific spin moves, and is intelligent enough to play his position and not overreact to plays. The “easily blocked” and “engulfed” statements seem to be the same problem … because he was consistently double teamed!

BJ Raji = Height: 6-1 1/2 | Weight: 337
“Is not an elite pass rusher…Struggled to keep up with his studies and intelligence may be an issue.” Before the draft and scouting him he impressed me that he was so quick. Strength was OK, but I think he’d struggle occupying multiple blockers. I’m surprised that he is not a better pass rusher given his quickness.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/2009/draft/players/11205.html NEGATIVES: Possesses just a short area burst of speed, and not effective making plays outside the tackle box. Marginal pass rusher. Has off-the-field issues that will raise red flags.

Ronald Fields: Height:6’ 2" | Weight: 315
I have not seen enough of his play to make any educated guess.

Personally, I can’t WAIT to see what Carlton Powell can do. He could probably bulk up a little to handle NT, but he sounds like he’s a LOT smarter than Raji, has better lateral movement, and is a much better run blocker. I see him at LDE rather than NT. I think Raji is overrated and Fields is underrated. I hope Powell is fully healed because he is truly a diamond in the rough for the Broncos.

On paper it looks like the competition on the Defensive Line and Line Backers is going to be INTENSE!!!

For the record...

…NFP writer Mike Lombardi called the dream match between team and FA as Ronnie Fields and the Denver Broncos. That was the eve of FA. When Lombardi started being critical of Denverignoring the front seven in the draft, I emailed him to clarify on Fields. He thinks Fields has a chance to be a stud 5 tech if given the chance. Hopefully Powell can handle NT so that Fields will get that opportunity.

Maybe Lombardi is wrong…but Fields is a real sleeper. He could pan out big time.

Was Powell's injury a major reason Shanahan put off switching to 3-4 until later in the season?

Did Shanahan have a plan with Powell to switch over, and that plan had to be delayed because he wasn’t healthy?

by bfree2bronc on Jun 22, 2009 3:01 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Shanahan's Plan

was to let Slowik run the defense. Nuff said?

I’m not sure Powell was ever slotted in for a 3-4. I happen to think he has tremendous potential for a down lineman whether in a 3-4, 4-3 or hybrid. I don’t see him as a standup linebacker.

by Endzone on Jun 22, 2009 3:05 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

last I heard...

Powell had bulked up to 310-315.

This year’s front 3 will likely be less than 200 lbs lighter than last year’s front 4 — playing at an average of about 30 lbs heavier per spot.

by JeffG on Jun 22, 2009 3:37 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

He may come out and stomp butt this year, being on IR all of last year.

This could be one of the most exciting years for the Broncos defense ever. Can’t wait to find out.

Sumo Wrestlers

Ever noticed that Sumo Wrestlers look obese? But they are STRONG with excellent quickness and great hands. [Don’t go thinking about what they’re grabbing.] But who was the Bronco known for his “forklift”? He wasn’t exactly buff.

Powell is going to surprise a few folks

Got his autograph on fan day…dude is a beast. Barring another injury problem, I feel he will be a solid contributor to our dline this year.

Oh…and he’s definitely bulked up…300lbs was last year. He’s at least 315 now from what I saw.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

Brandon

BM needs to prove he is a CLUTCH number 1 WR and not just a glorified possession reciever that he was last year.

In his defense, BM was double and triple teamed in the redzone because everybody knew Cutler was going to throw to him.

Other than that, I completely agree with everything you said and recommended for him. You clearly have his best interest in mind as well as the team. My first impression is to trade him if he doesn’t want to be here, but you raise good points regarding his hip and possible need for money. He has been disrespectful, though, of team and teammates by not showing up for camp. That must not be tolerated. He is talented and, if he shows up and has another great year, he WILL see the money. But any team trading for him is going to want his current contract. So, Brandon, WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE DUDE!

A second medical issue

is his arm. He has said it is still numb but the doctors say the feeling will come back in time. I cut some nerves in my leg about 30 years ago and I’m still waiting for the feeling to fully return.

You can’t catch at your best level if you can’t feel the ball fully. It may be a factor in the number of dropped balls he had. That could conceivably by a greater issue than the hip, especially if the hip was properly repaired. Nerve damage doesn’t get repaired by surgery. Once it is cut and done, you just hope it grows back. I wonder if we know the whole story on the arm injury.

Wherever you go, there you are.

Awesome work Boydy

I totally agree with everything you said. Interesting on your take on Marshall. I remember him talking about Cutler and all those yards don’t mean a thing if you can’t win. Well, I will say to Marshall, all those receptions (206 the last two season) and only scored 6.3% of the time (13). I mean Calvin Johnson had 12 TDs last year on an 0-16 team.
