If Brandon goes on IR or is PUP
If Brandon Marshall is put on PUP (player unable to perform) or IR (injury reserve), does 2009 count as a year toward Brandon Marshall's UFA? Or is it a lost year to him and he still has one year to UFA.
Seems to me that with the hip surgery and the arm nerve damage (still an issue) then the Broncos could just put him on PUP or IR and the whole issue of the contract goes away until he is completely ready to play.

It counts
I think the only way you can “lose” an accrued year is by holding out too far into the season.

Last Report date is August 11
Brandon must report by August 11. If he stays away until after 8/12/09 then he will lose an accrued year of service. Hence, he will have another year until free agency kicks in. 2011 instead of 2010. However, if no new CBA is finalized this year; then 2010 is an “uncapped” year – No team salary cap, and the fine print says that players must reach SIX years of service to be a UFA (2012 for Brandon). THe current standard is now four years.
So you can see that Brandon’s self imposed situation is all about the contract and the money. Worst case scenario for Brandon is that he becomes a UFA in 2012 at the age of 28yrs old (DOB 3/23/1984).
2009 Salary 2.2 Million
2010 Brandons contract expires. Broncos put Franchise tag on BM. He receives a one year contract at the average of the top 5 receivers Estimate 3 to 5 million
2011 same as above Franchise tag Broncos pay BM 3 to 5 million
2012 BM is finally a UFA at 28 yrs old – looking for a long term contract with HUGE signing bonus
ALL OF THE ABOVE IS MY BEST GUESS AT HOW THE CBA WORKS-
Hopefully SWG, TSG of STyg50 can correct or verify the scenario.
To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also DREAM; not only plan, but also BELIEVE.

I think he will only be
a restricted free agent. The Broncos can make a qualifying offer for him, which gives them first right of refusal and any team who singns him has to give packs to the Broncos based on the offer.

He will be an RFA
and they can give him a pittance of a contract and the Franchise tag him for two years which would allow him to leave in 2013 instead which is 29yrs old
