Checking Facts (Part 2)

The discussion going on in my previous "Checking Facts" post has been really lively with a lot of wonderful responses from the great minds here at MHR -- in fact, the comments are much better than the original post which was largely me venting.  I almost added the data below in a response to a comment, but I thought it was interesting enough to warrant it's own spot (you can agree or disagree with that evaluation as you so choose)

There's been a lot of people in the M(B)SM stating that Orton can't throw the deep ball.  There's been a lot of counter arguments that his perceived lack of threat as a deep ball quarterback can be blamed on the offensive play calling (which is probably a whole discussion in & of itself).  So I started wondering just what Orton's longest throws in his 33 games were.  I went to pro-football-reference.com to look up the box scores from each of Orton's 33 games, and found the following data, broken into yardage ranges, and the number which were his longest throws in a game:

DISCLAIMER -- this data does not reflect attempts to throw in those ranges, nor does it take into account yards after catch.  It simply reflects what has been statistically recorded as  his longest completion in each of his games.

2005 (his rookie year) 15 games

10-19 yard range --  2

20-29 yard range -- 7

30-39 yard range -- 3

40-49 yard range -- 2

50-59 yard range -- 1

2006 (did not throw a single pass)

2007  3 games

10-19 yard range -- 1

20-29 yard range -- 0

30-39 yard range -- 1

40-49 yard range -- 0

50-59 yard range -- 1

2008  15 games

10-19 yard range -- 0

20-29 yard range -- 7

30-39 yard range -- 5

40-49 yard range -- 0

50-59 yard range -- 2

60-69 yard range -- 1

Career  33 games

10-19 yard range -- 3

20-29 yard range -- 14

30-39 yard range --9

40-49 yard range -- 2

50-59 yard range -- 4

60-69 yard range -- 1

From this, as has been stated by multiple people here at MHR, Orton is fully capable of throwing the ball down field (48% of his "longest" throws went for more than 30 yards).

So, from where I sit, any claim that Orton cannot be a deep threat will be discounted, especially with upgrades in coaching, o-line and receivers.

A large thank you to all of you who have provided a much fuller picture of Kyle Orton (I knew nothing about him before he became a Bronco) for me through your posts and comments.  Each one of you make MHR a great place to discuss all things Broncos.
