no time to read right now
just wanted to get in 1st and thank you for all the work! I’ll be reading as usual as soon as I get off work. I wonder how many folks get basically ALL their Bronco news here?
Thanks again and sorry for my part in the nonsense yesterday.

What other news is out there that isn’t already linked here? There’s really no reason to go anywhere else for news.
Thanks for doing all the footwork, NYC!

Yeah really.
That is why Horse Tracks here at MHR is so awesome. I mean I don’t have to go anywhere but here to find what’s going on with the Broncos and throughout the league.
NYC does outstanding work.

Thanks NYC... and a question for you all
I’m as impressed as anyone with Spencer Larsen’s versatility and his work ethic, and am immensely proud to have a stud like that with a Bronco on his helmet.
But can any of our resident Xs n Os experts clarify something for me? What exactly is the competitive advantage in having one player serve multiple roles like that? How is having him do that better than having a talented LB on one side and another talented FB on the other side? Seems like that skill combination is rare enough that you might be able to find more talent at both positions by filling them with two “specialists”? Is there a competitive tradeoff to saddling one guy with so much responsibility?
So beyond saving a roster spot or two, and the accompanying salaries, is there a particular reason that you would want one guy wearing so many hats?
If there’s been MHR coverage on this question, I’d love a link. Thanks!

I don't know too much, but...
I think it makes it more difficult for teams to game-plan. As well as having a solution in case of injury to either position, having to have both the offenses and defenses studying the same guy seems like a lot more work (for them). Especially if they have no idea how he’ll be used.
This is a bit like Peyton Hillis’ game against Miami… I may be wrong here, but I think he took them by surprise. They may have looked at him prior to the game and shrugged him off as a mere fullback, not expecting him to perform like he did. If I were the opposing head coach, I’d perhaps be slightly irritated by the prospect of facing Larsen, because I may look at him as a linebacker and game-plan him as such, only to find him blocking for Hillis (is it possible?) or Moreno or even running and catching the ball out there. Or vice versa.
Isn’t it easier to game-plan the linebacker and the fullback, because you know exactly what each one will do, than a Larsen-type player, whose exact position is even an unknown. Doesn’t versatility add unpredictability?

That is always an advantage.
It is all about giving the opposing team more to think about and more players to account for when heading into Sunday. With that said we need to also have guys that are good at both of those positions in case of an injury or something.
I am glad we have Larsen on our team and love his versatility. Knowing that McD is going to be playing guys each week where they are best and creates an advantage for us, I am sure that McD will use him in every way he can.

felt the same way until I compared them side by side
Between today’s edition and this one (http://www.milehighreport.com/2009/5/27/889635/horse-tracks-5-27-09), it’s apparent to me that the one thing I about the old format that I thought was making it a faster read was the abbreviation of the source name (e.g., DB, DP, SDUT, etc.), which made it easy for me to just ignore the ones from sources I didn’t like and simply digest NYC’s lucid and enlightening summaries. So essentially, what made it faster was not that I could read it faster, but that I could discount some of the sources (SDUT, ESPN) and quickly identify the ones I liked.
In that light, I find that I do actually like the new format, with the full headline as part of the clickable link. If we wanted to get the above benefit back, might I suggest leading with the source name and following with the subject line, rather than vice versa.
Not a dealbreaker for me, though, quite the opposite. I think leading with the headline is actually keeping me more honest in absorbing every story.
Just my 2 cents. Thanks NYC.

NYC agreed
Of all the things that I haven’t liked about the McDaniels transition, being an offensive guy is not a problem…I hope Mike Nolan is the real deal, he has had some poorly rated defenses statistically , but I do like the fact that he is going to be given the freedom to have a philosophy that won’t have a control freak (shanny) playing puppeteer with him. Our defense off that alone will be better…..also went to lunch with a former Bronco RB and it was fun to learn a bit about Reeves, Shanahan, and Elway. Fun stuff for a lifelong fan.

Wow
That sounds like a fantastic lunch! Very jealous!!!
You’re right; Nolan hasn’t had great results across-the-board. It actually seems that he does well to turn around a poor squad quickly but the results don’t seem to last. No clue as to why that is…hopefully that won’t be the case here!

The Buffalo News article is interesting. Couple of great questions posed there on all the AFC West teams. Don’t agree with them about stability in SD though. They have a new defensive staff and while Rivera seems to have a grasp of Defensive schemes, there are several question marks on the that team he’ll have to work past.
The only comment made their on the Broncos I’d agree with is the question on the front seven. There is lots of promise and great coach in Nunnelly, but as they say proof is in the pudding. I do think it will be a very tasty pudding indeed, but not until after the bye.

Cleaning House (Not Bronco Related)
For those of you who might like hockey I was eager to see this story today. Most of them have big titles but getting rid of the “video coordinator” I think is the biggest impact.

haha I saw that, and did a little happy dance!
scratched my head a little on the video coordinator guy, but I guess if the whole engine has fallen out of the car, there’s little point in seeing if the exhaust gasket is salvageable. I think they announce the new GM this afternoon.

I find it laughable but wonderful that Wilson has again
anointed the Chargers as the chosen ones. Denver and KC can go either way – either or both teams could be phenomena to be reckoned with this season, or they could phenomenally suck. But to say that the gulf between SD and any other team in the West is insurmountable and inevitable is like a hope and a prayer while betting green at Roulette.
Wilson continues to look only at arm strength when evaluating QB talent. I maintain my opinion that intelligence, leadership, support, hard work, and respect can go further than a cannon arm any week if used correctly.
Larsen is a bada$$.
And once again, McDaniels has screwed up and is being labeled the next failed Belichick offspring without his ever having coached a game. McD is supposed to follow this supposed Tomlin model and shut up and listen to all the people who have been in the organization before. The problem with that logic is that Tomlin came to Pitt on the heels of Cowher’s SB victory. I’d listen, too. McDaniels was hand-selected to change the culture and direction in Denver away from mediocrity. I like that he is vocal, has a plan, and is executing it. I don’t know what the deal was with Mangini’s forced altruism, and it sounds like we dodged a bullet by not getting Raheem Morris, but McDaniels appears to be a seasoned leader of people, manager of assets, and evaluator of key components of a team concept.

I hate to use NYC’s awesome posts to put up something because I am bored and there is nobody in my lab to talk to. However, I am going to do it anyway.
So this is my sense of humor. Here you will find an electric hammer by Craftsman (Not a nail gun but an electric hammer, no swinging for us). You will notice it is Energy Star rated which I find humorous. It is so much better for the environment than say… a normal hammer.
