Josh McDaniels: Whats the plan? Oh…..THATS the plan!

Hi Everyone,

Hi Everyone,
This is an article I have been planning since before the draft. With starting a new business, my time has been limited so I am hoping this is still relevant! This is part 1 of the piece, and I will hit you guys up with part 2 in the next week or so. With all the negativity that I saw on the weekend from fans, MHR members and the MSM (who, frankly, I care for naught) I decided I would get on top of this now and try to get to the bottom of the plan that McDaniels has put in place since he arrived in Denver.
To adequately do this, we need to look at out team in a few phases:
- As it was before McDaniel’s arrived.
- As it APPEARED after free agency.
- As it APPEARS after the draft and CFA.
- What the future holds.
We need to look at the 3 sides of our team: Offense, Defense and Special Teams. Of course, we will be making some assumptions based on WHAT WE KNOW, as the proof of the pudding truly wont be tested until we start the season proper.
I want to do this as I would like all of US to look at our team as a whole, and to take into account only the facts on the board, and not the vitriol and garbage that we hear from lots of different sources.
I implore all of us to go into this season, and the new version of our team with a VERY open mind. History means NOTHING……and I mean…..NOTHING! This is a fresh start for our team. It has been WHOLESALE changes in staff, personnel, front office and scheme. These Broncos are still OUR Broncos but are as far away from last years model as the Oakland Raiders are!
With that said, lets jump in boots and all and look at our team as it was at the end of the 2008 season!
1/ The 2008 Denver Broncos:
Offense:
- Ranked 2nd in yards.
- Ranked 3rd in passing.
- Ranked 12th in rushing.
- Ranked 16th in scoring.
- Ranked equal 13th in Touch Downs scored.
- Threw 2nd most interceptions.
- Worst turnover differential in the league (tied with 49ers)
Many of us like to argue that we were one of the hottest offensive teams in the NFL. Just looking above at the stats, would prove otherwise. As has been mentioned ad nauseum here at MHR, we were great between the 20’s, but extremely average in the red zone. And here is another sobering statistic: Denver were the highest scoring team in the first 3 weeks but ranked 27th in scoring from weeks 4-17….hardly the stats of a high octane offense.
What can we take from all of this? Denver surprised the NFL with a pass first offense, which was then game planned against for the rest of the season. Cutler threw the 2nd most interceptions, and the team tied 5th in the NFL for give aways (18 INT and 12 fumbles). What is also a telling stat is that we were league tied worse in turnover differential with a -17. This hardly paints a picture of one of the best offenses in the NFL. Our ball security was poor, we relied on the pass, and we were slow or non existent in adjusting game plans.
We finished 12th in the NFL in rushing, and averaged 4.8 yards a carry. Seems good on paper, except that the majority of our gains were in games where we had been blown out. 2 examples of these are the losses to Carolina and San Diego.
We were just above average in Touchdowns scored, 16th in scoring total.
I look at this, and if I was the new coach coming into an offense that “should not be changed” I would be disappointed…..this is a very average offense with a lot if upside, but many places for improvement.
Defense:
- Ranked 29th in total defense/ yards allowed.
- Ranked 26th against the pass.
- Ranked 27th against the rush.
- Ranked 26th in sacks.
- Ranked 29th in TD’s allowed.
- Ranked 11th in tackles made.
- Ranked 31st in interceptions.
Can anyone say “YUCK”?
Pretty embarrassing stats that paint a picture of a defense that needs blowing up in a hurry. We could stop the run, the pass, sack the QB or produce take aways. Worse even still, we made the 11th most tackles in the NFL, which means we could never get off the field on 3rd down.
Why did McDaniels want THIS job???
Many fans are VERY disappointed we did not address the front 7 more than we did. But here’s the thing: based on what you can read into the stats, we were giving up big plays ALL over the field: 26 plays of 20 yards or greater against the rush and 47 plays of 20 yards or more against the pass. We sucked EVERYWHERE across the field. This is something to remember for later on.
Special Teams:
- Ranked 23rd in returning.
- Ranked 19th in kicking.
- Ranked 5th in punting.
- Kick off coverage 5th worse allowing 24.7 yards per return.
- Punt coverage 5th worse allowing 11.8 yards per return.
The most telling stat is not one that appears above but one that McDaniels quoted at one of his most recent news conferences: Denver was ranked 32nd (LAST) in field position to start drives. That’s pretty ordinary.
Our return team was ordinary…..actually, below average, as was out performance by Matt Prater on field goals and PAT’s. Punting was good, but when you play half your games at altitude you would expect to be in the Top 10 minimum, but punt coverage was bad again, ranking 5th worse in the NFL.
The stats paint a pretty true picture on special teams. If you cant start drives from good field position, and cant keep pressure on the opposition by making stops on special teams, it puts TOO much pressure on both the defense (who get short fields to defend) and pressure on the offense (who must maintain LONG drives to score points). Add to this Prater’s inaccuracy, and you have a pretty good recipe for underperformance from our team across the board BECAUSE the special team unit is a hinderance and not a help for the team.
2/ Our Team after Free Agency:
Free agency was the first stone that McDaniels, Xanders and the staff casted to change not only the roster, but the culture, with in the Denver Broncos organization. For any of us who watched the nightmare unfold down the stretch last season, our boys looked under prepared, unfocused and showing a distinct lack of heart and passion. Our coaches looked like deer in the head lights. A telling sign was how let down the team was when they were relying on Kansas to hold off San Diego…this showed a lack of confidence by the players in themselves and the team. The broncos had no team leaders that could bring fire and passion to the table. It was no coincidence that our team looked best when our rookie force played: WW, Hillis and Larsen brought balance, passion and focus to the team…..it was all lost when DJ, Webster and Champ returned.
So, who did McDaniels bring in? In a nutshell, he brought in players that filled some, or all, or the following characteristics:
- Team leaders.
- High character and high motor guys.
- Experienced leaders.
- Multi talented and versatile but also present 1 skill that they are BEST at.
- Mentors.
- Filled NEEDS for the team for the next couple of seasons.
- Players that are team first orientated.
Guys like Dawkins, Reid, Goodman, Davis, Buckhalter, Hill, Simms, Fields, Gaffney and resigned guys like Kenny Peterson, that would all bring work ethic, passion and team work to the Broncos.
Gone were guys like Nate “The Turnstile” Webster, Dre Bly, Manuel, Niko, Winborn, McCree….it was house cleaning at its most clinical.
McDaniels brought in NEW staff, which signaled the beginning of the end of the Jay Cutler era. Upgrades were made across the board: Mike Nolan, Mike McCoy, Nunnely, Martindale and in the smartest move made by McDaniels, he keeps on Bobby Turner and Rick Dennison.
Gone are Slowik, Bates and others who only proved (in this authors opinion) how out of their depth they were last season.
Our free agency period was universally panned by the MSM experts. We had done nothing to really upgrade our front 7, all our free agents were on the wrong side of 30 and we had brought in NO playmakers. As said in The Waterboy:
“Oh no, we suck again!”
Yeah, but do we? Not to give away the finale, but this was the biggest and most important part of McD’s strategy. Without these wily veterans, the whole scheme AND culture that the Broncos are trying to install does not work. More of that later.
This period was also important because……
WE TRADE JAY CUTLER!!!!!!
Perhaps the most DERISIVE event to happen in Bronco’s football EVER. We all have our opinions, and it has been played out to death, but the trading of Jay Cutler may have allowed Jedi McD the chance to get his plan happening quicker than even HE expected.
The trade brought a cache of picks and options, plus a QB with a 70% winning record and known as a team leader and smart, smart quarterback.
Denver already had 9 picks in the 2009 draft….this now gave us an extra 3rd and 1st……as well as an extra 1st in 2010!
The Broncos now have so many options that they become a player in the 2009 draft and have the ability to turn the team into a competitive team 1 year earlier than expected. This will be a piece of the puzzle that will lead to Denver’s ultimate drafting ideology come April 26th.
Based simply on our roster, before the draft, on paper, we are already a better looking team.
Our team now lines up with improvements here:
- Dawkins and Hill now manning our safety positions over McCree and Manuel. This is also a great tool for the development of Josh Barrett. A huge upgrade!
- With Dre Bly gone, we now have starting corners of Andre Goodman and Champ Bailey. Behind them are upstarts Josh Bell and Jack Williams…..a lot better mix for our secondary.
- With a turn to the 3-4, some of our current roster are more suited to this scheme. We bring in a team leader like Andra Davis. Darrell Reid, a special teams ace, and a BIG man with great speed, gives the Broncos options in an elephant/ Adallius Thomas type role. Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder, who came out of college regarded as better fits for a 3-4, now are in a scheme where they MAY thrive. Dumervil also has the ability and agility to thrive.
- Ronnie Fields is brought in as a NT prospect. He is regarded by many as THE steal of Free Agency. He is young, tough, has played for Mike Nolan and his play is maturing. Already in camp is Carlton Powell, whos scouting report is not dis-similar from that of Ron Brace. Add to that Marcus Thomas, Kenny Peterson, Matthias Askew and J’Von Parker and we have some options along the line.
- We appear deep at the running back position with Ryan Torain, Peyton Hillis, and include Free Agents Lamont Jordan and Correll Buckhalter.
- Jabbar Gaffney is brought in. A former Pats player with good receiving skills. Not only does he bring knowledge of the scheme, but he is an upgrade over Darrell Jackson and the other WR’s we had last year that have been cut.
So, moving into the draft, our team not only looks better on paper than last year, but we have solved the leadership problem that was prevalent last year.
Things are looking up for a positive draft!
Please hit me with any comments.
Stay tuned to part II!

Great post
Pure and simple I think that Denver is going to be a fun team for any fan to watch. If we can be the ‘greatest show on turf’ in our offense and the ‘Mad Scientists’ on Defence the entertainment value of our team makes this season truly exciting.
Makes you wonder...
…how anyone can say we haven’t addressed needs.
It is absolutely crazy
how far under the MSM radar this team is flying….

I love it
Our team seems to always perform best when we’re the underdogs. I think that’s a part of Denver’s culture that will never change. We aren’t a team that feeds on being favored. That’s a huge deal to me.

I’m gonna love seeing them twist and spin when Denver’s lots better than they’ve predicted.

My best to both of you
I spent my life realizing that my basic choices were self employed and unemployed – I always liked building a business and developing the client base, hiring (not firing, but oh well) and seeing it grow. I’m sure the you’ll both do great!

good way of looking at it
Pearl Jam has a great song called “unemployable” which recounts someone losing their job and ‘seeing the light’ and being “scared alive”.
“If he can’t sleep, how will he ever dream?”
I have found that when I work for others, the best way to view it is as contracting out your labor, under your own terms. And then as quickly as possible, translate the skills you learn into your own personalized version of delivering them: this means striking out on your own.
One of the greatest fears you’ll confront is that you may not have any real value to offer others. Maybe being an employee and getting paid by the hour is the best you can do. Maybe you just aren’t worth that much. That line of thinking is all just part of your conditioning. It’s absolute nonsense. As you begin to dump such brainwashing, you’ll soon recognize that you have the ability to provide enormous value to others and that people will gladly pay you for it. There’s only one thing that prevents you from seeing this truth — fear.
All you really need is the courage to be yourself. Your real value is rooted in who you are, not what you do. The only thing you need actually do is express your real self to the world. You’ve been told all sort of lies as to why you can’t do that. But you’ll never know true happiness and fulfillment until you summon the courage to do it anyway.
The next time someone says to you, "Get a job," I suggest you reply as Curly did: "No, please… not that! Anything but that!" Then poke him right in the eyes.

Hey boys....
Yep, still coaching.
I have started a business with 5 other coaches focusing on Elite and Elite Junior athletes. It is a big undertaking, but something I believe in.
We have our first project happening in Mt Hood and New Zealand this summer. Lots of work and A LOT of stress, but I am super excited.
Thanks for the great thoughts.

Great football analysts clammering for the new HC to leave the offense alone it’s just fine. Yep, consentrate on the defense and leave the offense alone. Hmmmm. What incredulous idiots. Even some on here are to blame for their lack of football knowledge, because they were saying the same thing. I could see there was something wrong with the offense, but I am not a stats guy so it only came in pieces of evidence we witnessed on the playing field. The move to Choose Mcdaniels was a brilliant one as of so far, am I believe Pat Bowlen got the pick of the litter. Now if Mcdaniels can coach the games in the same manner that he has done with player acquistitions then we will be 13-3 Baby!!!
Oh, by the way…Great post Boydy.
13-3? Not this season.
Away – Cinci, Oakland, San Diego, Baltimore, Washington, K.C., Indy, Philly.
Home – Cleveland, Dallas, New England, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Giants, Oakland, K.C.
New offensive and defensive systems for everyone to learn.
This season’s Broncos could actually finish 4-12. Seriously. With all the change, I’d think 6-10 would be respectable. 8-8 would be a damn good season. Anything better than that would be phenominal, and I’d have to actually bow down to McD. I always try to be optimistic, but with the upheaval and the schedule, I’m not going to start expecting double digit wins until the 2010 season.
You are absolutely right we could go 8-8 this just as Mike Shannahan did when he became HC in 1995,
the Broncos were the worst team in the NFL the year before.
In his first season as the Denver Broncos’ head coach in 1995, Shanahan improved the team to a .500 record (8-8) and contention in the very competitive AFC West while immediately stamping the Denver offense with his signature as the most productive unit in the AFC, finishing third in the entire NFL. Under Shanahan in 1995, the Broncos had the best offense in franchise history, breaking team records in points scored (388), total yardage (6,040), total passing yardage (4,260), first downs passing (205) and highest average gain per play (5.7) while tying the team records for touchdown passes (27) and average gain per rush (4.5). At the same time, the Broncos’ defense improved 13 positions, from last in the NFL the previous year to 15th under Shanahan’s leadership.
Being in the worst position and going to 8-8 was a great acchievement, the Broncos were 8-8 last year and with the improvements thus far it’s not far fetching to go 13-3. Shannahan in his second year went 14-2 and lost in the playoffs, yet another great acchievement. Going worst to near best. I see the same thing happening again, and I believe alot of other people on here do so to. Thanks for the pessimism though. 13-3 Baby!!!
It's not pessimism, it's realism.
I’m not judging any off season moves yet, and I’ll decide whether I like McDaniels, or not, somewhere after the half way point in the season. But if I hung a 13-3 expectation on him, and the team, for ‘09, I’d be setting myself up for a huge disappointment.
I’ll be completely stoked if we pull off an 8-8 season. It’s very rare when a team has had to face all of the following circumstances and then won 13 games the next season:
1. A complete change of the coaching staff.
2. The implementation of two completely different offensive and defensive philosophies.
3. Major changes in player personnel.
4. Facing a shedule with 6 playoff teams from the previous season ( One of them they have to play twice).
Can it happen? Yes. It’s possible. If it did I’d be ecstatic. But it isn’t very probable. I’ll be expecting a playoff run in 2010, but I’m willing to give McDaniels and his staff a bit of slack while they put this thing together.
Nice comment 17. Well worded and good argument......I am more of a optimist than you but your points are well taken my friend!

It's the "AURA" of LaLaLand that makes it possible.
I am aware of all the changes…whew, boy was there alot of them. But, the way all the changes came about was phenomenal. I am an old fart, I know, but even I after playing poker for a long time can see what’s in the next hand before I bet. I guess I call it intuition. I am one of those bash you in the mouth type players (if I was playing again) like Butkus was, and I see that same type of coach in McDaniels. I believe he will scheme and do anything there is possible to win, the guys a workaholic. 13-3 Baby!!!
Hey.....all I can say is,
I hope you’re right, Brother. I’d love to see it.

That's the issue, Broncofan17
What will all the changes bring? It could be that things don’t mesh well and Broncos go 4-12 or so. But McD and Nolan have three months to get an intelligent bunch of players on the bus together, and we have a great O line and lots of talent at the skill positions, on offense anyway. So I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to hope for a lot better than 4-12. Baltimore and Miami and Atlanta did quite well last year with just as many changes, and they were starting with a lot less talent.
Growing older is not for sissies. Jack Palance
5-11
I am betting on 5-11 which may surprise many people who notice I am a big fan of the direction the team is going. Know this the Hoodie was 5-11 in his first year and hasn’t had a losing record since. I would be happy with those results.

Great post Boydy. Thanks for taking the time to put this together for us…very telling indeed.

Wow! Our D was 11th in the league in tackles made!
Defense:
Ranked 29th in total defense/ yards allowed.
Ranked 26th against the pass.
Ranked 27th against the rush.
Ranked 26th in sacks.
Ranked 29th in TD’s allowed.
Ranked 11th in tackles made.
Ranked 31st in interceptions.
Or, was that just because they were first in tackle opportunities?

Nice post – but you forgot about Alphonso Smith – who I believe may challenge for one of the starting corner positions by mid-season. My optimism is somewhat tempered by the D front seven as I’m not convinced we’ve done enough of a talent upgrade there to where the change in scheme is going to be meaningful. I don’t think we can be worse than the combination of undisciplined (Webster) and non-committal (Slowik). We just need to play some ball and it’s still too far away for my patience level. Go Broncs!
It's "just" football
I think Smith's character will be introduced in chapter 2

When you look at the rankings in defense and special teams in particular they are truly inferior. How could anyone believe we were only one or two players away from a Super Bowl? It may not happen this year, but I just know we’re going to play hard and get better as the season progresses with the players who make this team and the coaches training them. BTW if you think 40’s bad wait till 50+.
A Bit Rosy
IMHO, the writers on the featured posts of this blog are casting change in a bit of a McDanielsian rosy hue, but given a choice between that and gloom and doom, I will also cast my lot with the Pollyanna crowd.
Its unfair to tar MIke Shanahan constantly with going for players with weak character. Shanahan brought in Lynch and Champ Bailey, among others. He did in some instances take risk with very talented marginal characters, hoping to get a bargain or resuscitate a career. My guess is that not all of the current acquisitions will turn out to be choir boys. No one in the new crowd seems in a rush to dump BM. Many would say that the free agent RBs are retreads, the front 7 defensive ones are second teamers. and the secondary pickups are old.
Injuries made a pretty good team last year pretty mediocre at the end. A couple of key injuries this year, and I will expect worse results.
Let’s hope that we see some growth from key players left behind from the Shanahan years, less injuries and some contributions from free agency, the regular draft and the free agent signings. With the exception of the Cutler/McDaniels debacle, I do not see as drastic changes as you do, but I very much enjoyed reading this analysis.

You are correct on different coaching in some regards. although I am glad that McDaniels had enough sense not to do in Turner and Dennison. RB and OL should not be all that different. The rest, well, I hope you are right.
Thank you for taking my comments in the spirit in which they were given. I greatly enjoy the really good analysis being done by MHR and hope for the best. I see a rocky year, but that may just be my desire not to be too enthusiastic for fear of jinxing things.
by Baltimore Bronco on Jun 3, 2009 2:49 PM MDT up reply actions
a kindred spirit
Baltimore Bronco, I agree with you. And I’d label the optimism that prevails here as foolish if so many of their arguments weren’t so well thought out. I remember when I first discovered this forum: It was at the height of the Cutler drama and I had written the Broncos off in 2009. I believed 3-13 was the best-case scenario. Then I came here and read some of the analyses and my mind slowly changed. Now, I think they could finish 8-8.
If the 13-3 crowd (as I’ve labeled them, and I don’t mean that sardonically) has made any mistakes it’s in their willingness to discount talent while elevating the role of scheme and coaching. Then they follow that up with what I believe is a heretofore unfounded faith in Josh McDaniels. To read some of these posters, you’d think McDaniels wasn’t born but rather cultured in a test tube filled with a melange of DNA from Vince Lombardi, Bill Walsh, Chuck Noll, Don Shula and Albert Einstein.
I disagree with the view that scheme trumps all. I believe talent, specifically so-called “playmakers,” often separate the winning team from the losing team on Sunday. And I’m reserving judgement on Josh McDaniels. But I have to admit, he seems pretty bright so far. I just wonder what the New York media was saying about Eric Mangini at this point in his coaching career with the Jets. I believe he was christened “Mangenius” fairly early on.
Even more surprising is the enthusiasm surrounding McDaniel’s decision to hire Mike Nolan. I don’t have perfect knowledge – not even close – but I’m fairly well read, and while I wouldn’t consider myself an NFL historian, I don’t understand why people love Mike Nolan. I can’t find anything in Nolan’s track record that suggests he’s anything special. And more evidence that suggests he’s just a warm body.
Having said all that, I can’t discount these optimists. They haven’t committed intellectual suicide and they’re kind of persuasive.
But who will guard the guards themselves?

Well put. I'm with you on the realism, and I am a system guy
I think 8-8 is a realistic prediction.
Also true, I like the new direction and execution and what the players are saying.
System vs. Stars: It’s not an OR it’s an AND. You need both. In basketball, where there’s only 5 guys, bringing in a star can really improve a team. Of course, if there’s no chemistry, there’s no team, just good individuals. In football, so many packages and special roles as well as the number of players, you have to have a sound system and then fit the personnel to it.
What I like about McDaniels is his system, is not only augmented with players who fit the needs, but he’s building an organizational culture too. That’s very unusual and in my book, very wise.
When things go wrong, and they always do, will the players turn on each other or will they rally and support one another? Do they like each other and sacrifice for a greater good? Do they never quit?
I think McDaniels is building everything simultaneously, as a single vision: addressing systems, capabilities, effort, group dynamics, and leadership. I’m impressed, and I still think 8-8 but hope for more.

Stars v. System
The only thing I would note is that finding stars in the NFL nowadays is a bit different than before. First, intelligence and understanding complex systems are critical to success that is a result of coaching and system preeminence. Second, “stars” are regularly found from the cut player lists. I recently read how James Harrison was cut twice by Pitt. He was actually with the Ravens for a year. This is a star par excellence and any team could have him. I don’t think that was true in the past. Maybe athletic specimens like “the real LT” are just easier to find (maybe not exactly the same, but close), such that coaches and personnel people can’t pick ’em as easy. The point is stars and systems do go together but in a way that challenges the notion of talent and star quality. So, we may have a few on the Dline. I like how McBean was a Pitt retread and Griesen was a Bal retread….why, b/c these teams are loaded at DL and LB. Its no wonder that sometimes quality players from them get cut. Figure that J. Harrison was behind J. Porter and to make a call to release J. Porter is a big decision that only a “great” organization has the balls to make. Grabbing some of these retreads may prove to be a starbuilding enterprise.
All in all….we are way too rosy….myself included. Its all speculation, but I just can’t believe how good things look upon even CLOSE examination. We’ll see…..I’m in the 13-3 crowd though until something proves me different.
Bal Bronco…..I would read less MSM stuff and more MHR. I think the team whether 8-8 or worse will be better off with both Shanny and Cutler gone. They both have their qualities but those are not in leadership. The teams that advance in the playoffs all demonstrate leadership.

You are right BB
but I believe that we have more depth this year, or at least better quality depth in a few more places.
With the 12th pick, the Broncos select Knowshon Moreno - Roger Goodell
That'll move the chains - Andy Samberg
You can't go wrong when you look for good value.
The value in free agency was not D-line except for Fields so he went with D backs and Running Backs. The value at pick 12 was Moreno and a lot of teams agreed with that, that should help our defense stay off the field more and help us in the red zone, so that was how we went. At 18 there was Avery you can’t argue with that pick a better prospect then Jackson or Orakpo or Maybin, so the right choice was made. In the second round the value for this team was D- backs and special teams not risky D-linemen.
The value for D-line prospects turned out to be college free agents, so we took some.
It was a great plan and we have found some very good and maybe great players. Smart, and it will pay off wait and see.

I agree, Lisa, with the Moreno pick… but am not so enthusiastic for exchanging the 1st rounder next year for the CB pick. We could have owned the draft next year with two picks in the first round, but we spent our money already this year. I don’t think that is good value unless Smith turns into a 10 ballhawk for the Broncos… It may happen, but it also may not.
by Baltimore Bronco on Jun 3, 2009 2:52 PM MDT up reply actions
I Understand Your Concern
But value isn’t what you should be worried about. From a value standpoint not paying for 4 first rounders in 2 years but instead 3 first rounders and a 2nd rounder with the rating of a 1st rounder is a great deal.
Really your concern is more about overall quality of player which is all the higher picks give you access to. Time will tell how that works out.
Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.
I see your point of course Baltimore B
I really wasn’t focused on how they obtained the multiple 2nd round picks just that they had them and I liked how they used them. I did read an interesting post about the trade here that it could be a good cap move assuming Alonso Smith is as good as they think. That post mentioned that the Raiders will take the same cap hit for their 1st pick this year as the Broncos will for there first 5 picks. If true that is incredible and it changed my view on the trade.
Wow!
Amazing insight there Lisa…..never heard that or thought about it. Thanks!

And the Chiefs will take an even bigger one on Jackson
…hehe…chortle…ummmm….salmon…hehe….
Hillis/Moreno in '09
Which Is Evidence
To everyone out there worried that Denver traded away a top 10 pick next year. If we did, big if, it could still be the best decision ever made. Frankly the only way we lose out is if the Bears turn out to be terrible.
Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.
Agreed
But it’d shut up the “waaaa, he traded away OUR first rounder” crowd… {grin}

Great breakdown boydy ! Happy birthday !
I think the broncos are going to be the very dangerous team that everyone will fear
playing ! We still should have that respect around the leauge but i think even more so
because we are full of so many question marks when it will be time to game plan us !
Adding in MORENO was a major lift in talent to a big time program who knows
how to run the football . He might even be offensive rookie of the year !

Speaking of being 11th in tackles made:
As some said before, this means we couldn’t get off the field on 3rd downs and that teams were running good on us.
BUT: Combined with the fact that we ranked 29th both in total defense/yards AND Touchdowns allowed, doesn’t mean that 11th in tackles made is pretty worse? Shouldn’t we be like 3rd then? As I remember, we had problems tackling sometimes, hadn’t we?
So these facts too show us that we gave up many high yardage Touchdown passes and runs… Or can someone decline this with a stat?
And btw: How many tackles did we miss? Is there a ranking? I think we are top-notch in this stat…
good eye
and high yardage TDs are the responsibility of the safeties.

Nice post Boydy
Nice and succinct stat wrap of 2008 mate, good stuff.
IMHO the coaching change even without a talent influx would make a fairly measureable difference, especially on D, look at all successful programs across all sports and successful individual athletes and its their ability to surround themselves with quality coaching that makes them successful, its inargueable, name any great, from any sport from Michael Jordan to Lance Armstrong and they all have had arguabley the best coaches of their generation working with them.
How was our D ever going to get better even if we brought in the best defensive athletes of the draft if they couldn’t be taught a system that the defensive co-ordinator didn’t really seem to have a understanding of himself?
And vice versa if we had of brought in a successful defensive head coach would he of been able to correctly adjust the deficiencys of the offense & special teams?
If Spagnolo had of come in as some wanted and left the offense alone how would of his defence looked continually being on the field and with bad field position?
I think were super lucky to get McD.. can’t wait till the season starts!!
Anyhooo good post mate, must of been written by a coach.. :) Looking forward to part 2

Good to have you back!
The thing that jumps out to me. After 4 games our scoring dropped drastically! Was that do to injury or opponents gameplanning against us? It seemed obvious to me that after halftime we could not adjust to the opponents adjustment. If this is true than leadership ( or lack there of) and coaching needed to be changed. I was waiching Americas Game on NFLN last nite, and something hit me like a ton of bricks. the show was on the 97 Broncos, and their SB run:). At one point in a critical playoff game vs. the chiefs, I lay it out. It was 4th and 1 and the game was starting to turn on the Broncos. GOAT went over to Shanny and said he saw it in Shanny’s eyes, he wanted to go for it! GOAT said lets do what marty would do, punt it and get field position. The rest is history. Now I know that only John could get away with this kind of coaching from the field situation, but it led me to think. If John hadn’t thought of that would we have 2 SB’s! My point is that maybe the coaching change was the biggest move the Broncos needed, and I meen the whole staff. Nice post and rec’d. Can’t wait for part 2.
GO BRONCOS!!!!

Happy Bday, congratumalations on the business thing,

Enjoyed reading this can't wait for the post draft version
Anyway IMO (which only counts in my head) I believe the best move McD made was getting rid of Jeremy Bates. We all saw what the Offense did when they were running Shanny’s scripted plays @ the beginning of the games and halfs, but when Bates started calling the plays the offense just couldn’t put the points up. Good Luck @ USC Pete Carroll is not going to put up with not scoring

Great thopughe boydy...rec'd...
I just have this gut feeling that with McDaniels, starting as an asst. defensive coach, probably had alternative duties helping with the ST’s also.
I think you are right…Josh has made great strides to improve both.

Great stuff, man.
This article actually made me a little more optimistic about the team. I do see McDaniels taking a lot of heat this season, though. With wholesale changes in the coaching staff and offensive and defensive systems, not to mention personnel changes, the Broncos have A LOT to adjust to. Throw in one hell of a brutal schedule, and our guys have quite the task in front of them.
Away – Cinci, Oakland, San Diego, Baltimore, Washington, K.C., Indy, Philly.
Home – Cleveland, Dallas, New England, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Giants, Oakland, K.C.
There are a lot of fans who are wanting McDaniels to fail, and they’re going to hold him to some ridiculous expectations this season. With all the changes, and the schedule, you’d have to legitimately call 6-10 a successful season. 8-8 would be phenominal. Anything better than that, McDaniels is coach of the year.
I was one of the guys who hated McDaniels for letting Cutler get away, but I’m over it. I hope he, and the team, succeed. I’m not going to expect double digit wins until the 2010 season, though. That’s just a bit unrealistic for this season.
Anyway, I’m pretty new here and this article is one of the first things I’ve read. Impressive stuff. Thanks for a great read, and for the shot of optimism.
