Horse Tracks 6/4/09

Mornin' MHR Friends! I've tried melding the old and new formats a bit; please let me know what you think, and have a great Thursday!
DB - Wednesday’s Practice Report
Gray Caldwell covers the highlights from yesterday's practice.
DB - Kicking with Confidence
Matt Prater has learned to preserve his leg, now that he's not competing for a job like he was a year ago. Josh McDaniels says it's too early to evaluate D-Linemen, he's impressed by Peyton Hillis' wide range of skills, and he'll continue to be hands-on with the quarterbacks.
DB - On Track - Broncos TV
Chris Hall reports from Wednesday's practice.
DB - Passing Camp: McDaniels - Broncos TV
Video of McDaniels meeting with the press; he plays down the absence of Brandon Marshall, who is rehabbing in Florida and covers plenty on the QBs, Peyton Hillis, Elvis Dumervil's absence and more.
DB - Passing Camp: Graham - Broncos TV
Daniel Graham met briefly with the press.
DP - Broncos coach puts QBs' mettle under his pedal
There's a steep learning curve for the QBs with bumps along the way. Not unexpected; I can't wait to see what the MSM does with this article..."John Clayton declares Cutler trade disaster because Kyle Orton is struggling. says Josh McDaniels doesn't know what he's doing, having acquired two QBs who can't figure out his system."
LTC - Broncos RB Jordan hoping for fresh start in Denver
Brian Howell profiles LaMont Jordan, who shares some very interesting thoughts; Jordan admits he's never really worked that hard in prior offseasons, that he's looking to lose weight this summer, and he grew up a Broncos fan rooting for Elway, Atwater and Dennis Smith!
IN - The secret life of Josh McDaniels
Hunter Ansley takes a walk on the bright side of the road. He admires that Josh McDaniels is looking to build a team, rather than a group of individual stars.
CSG - Rookie making big strides on the Broncos defense
Frank Schwab makes a big deal out of Robert Ayers practicing at first team in Elvis Dumervil's absence. Not so sure about that one...
DP - Broncos' McDaniels happy with NFL decision on Marshall
Another rehashing of McDaniels' quotes on BMarsh.
DB - Photos from Wednesday's practice
NFP - Wednesday Whys
Andrew Brandt explains why Brandon Marshall was not suspended this time, and why the Cowboys chose to release Greg Ellis.
CD - Zimmer, voice of CU football, earns prestigious honor
Old friend Larry Zimmer received the Chris Schenkel Award on Wednesday.

Darrius Heyward-Bey is still dealing with hamstring issues, among other notes.
SFG - Raiders Silver and Black Blog : OTA notes and quotes

NFL - Young's agent downplays QB's play-me-or-trade-me comments
Major Adams is trying to clean up the mess his player made earlier in the week.
NFL - Dolphins' enviable QB situation also among NFL's most intriguing
Vic Carucci looks at the Dolphins' stacked depth chart at QB.
NFL - Titans would be wise to have some patience with QB Young
Bucky Brooks thinks Vince Young could still thrive in Tennessee.
NFP - Why VY & Leinart Will Sit In ‘09
Matt Bowen expects Vince Young and Matt Leinart to ride the pine once again.
MJS - Dungy: Bears not sure bet
Tony Dungy doesn't seem to impressed by the Bears' move to get Jay Cutler.
SI - New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers vie for team of decade
Don Banks ranks the NFL franchises by their performances this decade. Denver comes in at a surprising 8th despite only 1 playoff victory (and ahead of the Bucs, who won a Super Bowl?!) Now that is going to raise some ire in Tampa.
SI - Tom Brady's 2007, LaDainian Tomlinson's 2006 among NFL's best

Thanks NYC!
That Ansley piece was well thought out and well written. Of course, the comments were from Cutler dead-enders who think that McDaniels is the WORST EVAH!, but he basically says exactly what most of MHR has been saying — McD has a plan, and that plan is a good one. This team will be improved this year, and a lot of people will be left scrambling to find space on the ‘wagon. I’ve got my seat up front where it’s nice and comfortable.
Oh, and good luck with Manuel, Detriot. Are we absolutely sure that Millen isn’t still somehow pulling the strings?

Agreed on Ansley's article.

Thanks NYC
This is the first site I go to every morning. I love HT.
Did anyone catch the comments made by Tony Dungy on ESPN this morning? Basically (and this is a summary statement I heard on ESPN) he thinks the Bears took a HUGE gamble on taking Cutler, a QB that does not have the record that warrants the amount given up for him. Did McDaniels pull off the biggest trade/steal of the decade?
Go Broncos!

How'd Dungy do without a franchise QB?
hmmm?
by Whidbey Bronco on Jun 4, 2009 7:27 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hmm....
Helped develop the Tampa-2 defense, was continually in the playoffs, helped mold Tampa Bay into a serious contender, leaving a team that would win a Super Bowl the year after he left, then gradually slide down from that success, then took a team with a franchise QB that had issues, won a Super Bowl, and ran that team exceedingly well.
So, other than a very successful coaching career all around…not much. :o)
And if the point is “Dungy needed a franchise QB to win, so look what Denver screwed up!”, it might be worth pointing out that, if Dungy recognizes the value of a TRUE franchise QB, but isn’t sold on Cutler due to issues with the “other” aspects of being an NFL QB (oh, and with how Cutler left Denver)…then maybe the labeling of Cutler as a franchise QB (which, I will admit, I was fully on board with until recently) is a TAD premature.
"Don't feed the trolls. Remember to be polite. And please show self-restraint in comment length!" -Me, to myself, because I need constant reminding.
by Disco_Stu on Jun 4, 2009 8:31 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
my point was he really only had success with the one QB
so how would he know. Get it?
Tampa was a FAILURE with Dungy.
Quit translating his very few words to derive your meaning! And definitely don’t translate mine.
P Manning had issues? Seriously?
You were fully on board with labeling him a franchise QB until recently… did I miss a game Stu?
Jay’s NOT a franchise QB BTW… maybe he never will be. He’s got it all but hasn’t proved a thing except that he won’t take any sh@t from some disrespectful (he felt) upstart coach who ALSO hasn’t proved anything except that he won’t back down to some snot nosed (he felt) young potential franchise QB.
Can’t wait to see it all work out on the field!
BTW isn’t Cutler a BEAR?
I will likely continue to defend him every time you haters feel the need to bash him but DAMN can’t we talk about the Broncos?
by Whidbey Bronco on Jun 4, 2009 9:34 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’d hardly call the Bucs a failure under Dungy. He took the biggest joke of a franchise and turned them into perennial contenders.
Continually getting to the playoffs and falling short like the Bucs did under Dungy would be a good problem for McDaniels to have.
by Velveeta on Jun 5, 2009 4:18 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Dungy
I don’t know about that either.
He didn’t win the big one but he was one year removed. Gruden’s Superbowl is arguably 80-60% Dungy’s. He had great success and certainly more than Denver has had in recent seasons.
Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.

Thanks for the News
Has anyone else mentioned Clayton’s brilliant take that if Simms wins the QB battle it will be a double disaster for Denver because we won’t be able to take advantage of Clady’s ability at the blind side.
I guess he has never heard of the other Ryan on the OL.
I also found it interesting that Tony Dungy isn’t impressed but I am going to just brush that off because what would Tony Dungy know about how to win football.
Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.
by Kfustud on Jun 4, 2009 7:51 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
seriously...
Dungy retired with Peyton friggin Manning as his QB. He wouldn’t know a franchise QB if he won the SB with one…
…oh. ;-)

More like more of the shakey validation Cutler haters need.
Cutler has everything you want in a young QB, leadership & poise under pressure not the least! The only indications of anything other than that come here! Not from former players or coaches …you know, folks who’d know.
BTW Dungy’s comments address the risk of paying so much for Jay as unrealized potential and mentioned that he’d be concerned as to Jay’s part in the split with Denver… (Of course, who wouldn’t be) Nothing negative! Boy, haters WILL reach.
The only thing Cutler doesn’t have is the Broncos…. But at least he still has all you folks trashing him every chance you get. Maybe I should start posting every good thing I can find on him? There’s tons of it past, present & very likely future!
But I won’t CUZ HE’S A BEAR!!

BTW how many games did he contribute to winning
after our defense tried to give them away?
How many fourth quarter come-backs with zero run support?
Come on, give the guy a break!
I bet you were calling him the next coming last year!
Weren’t u?
QB play was certainly no weakness last year.
If he really sucked, you wouldn’t be so mad at him for leaving!
Let’s talk about Orton & Simms… Broncos QBs!!
I’d like to see Simms make up for the pain his father inflicted on us! I wonder who will be our Meggett? Maggot?
Orton? Could be exactly what he appears to be…average. Let’s hope not. He certainly should improve over a not bad last year …with our O-minded coach, our O-line & our receivers… but then he’ll be without the field position I’m sure his Bears special teams and D gave him more regularly than he’s likely to get here…

I chose it independently the day I joined.
I’m not sure if GJ swiped it from me or coincientially cropped the same photo from google images (it wouldn’t be a huge streatch as the source picture was one of only a couple pictures available). I guess the reason I would change it has more to do with the shock factor when I log in of seeing the avatar in the fanpost section, I always do a double-take. Also, people may confuse our posts (which wouldn’t be a problem for me because I like GJ’s stuff— I just don’t want to drag him down to my level!).

I have reviewed all 14 of your posts to this date.
I have found some civil, but a few of your comments are rants which are directed at no one in particular, or which argue angrily against a point which has not been made by anyone. You authored a reasonable post, and then destroyed your own credibility with your outrageous comments. Several times, people (like Jon T) asked you for evidence to support your claims, and you have yet to respond or engage in intelligent debate. You are completely welcome here, as far as I’m concerned, but there’s no reason for the F-bombs (see Papi’s linked article) or the name calling (see Broncobear’s response to the same linked article) or the general hostile tone of some of your posts. Tone it down, relax, and come back into the fold. Or don’t if you really feel that this site is controlled by Big Brother. Dissenting opinions make this place work, but we can disagree without being disagreeable.

McD recognizes the TALENT and the ATTITUDE!
I have to “evil laugh” to myself at the thought of other teams having to deal with Hillis this season. There is a question about his health, but that injury was a fluke (knock on wood) because of the way the pass was thrown, the coverage he beat to catch it, and the extra effort he showed to make the play. I LOVE ME SOME DOUBLE-DEUCE MOOSE!

Indeed.
This is great news to me too. Earlier in the offseason, I had heard rumblings of both Hillis and Scheffler having a hard time finding a place in McDaniels’ offense. Now, Scheffler said that he talked with McD and they are both on the same page and Hillis is getting looks everywhere. I am so glad that Hillis is getting all of those different looks. Last year he was a great player. Not good, GREAT. He gave the broncos an extra pop. The way he bulldozed defenders made me smile and grimace at the same time. The grimacing was clearly from sympathy for the poor defensive player. I thought “I wonder what it is like to be completely destroyed by an OFFENSIVE player.”
This is what I want to see next season. McD mentioned splitting Hillis out and letting him catch passes in an interview. I want to see Hillis lined up in the slot, taking a crossing route, receiving the pass, and LAYING THE WOOD to the poor MLB that happened to go in for the tackle.
Would that not be the best Bronco play of all time????
Instant classic……..

If Moreno could have gone to a team that has a good offensive line, good RB coach that can make use of Moreno’s talents, and be surrounded by good receiving threats to back the defense up a bit, he could be a weapon.
Yep, too bad he went to Denver.

They had insightful commentary such as “Denver could have shored up their defense for years to come with those two picks, especially if they both hit.”
Really? So if both the picks turned out to be pro bowl superstars we could have shored up our D?
Talk about a big “IF.”
With regards to drafting it is very interesting all the articles being written suddenly about the 06 draft and “What the hell happened?” as QBs ride the pine and whatnot. I am surprised that they never put 2 and 2 together when talking about this draft or future drafts.

As much as I I like like KM...
I agree with "Denver could have shored up their defense for years to come with those two picks, especially if they both hit."
If? Of course. So is Moreno!
I think most of the reasonable folks realize (after calling for McD’s head and then realizing that we had better get used to him cuz he’s not going anywhere…) lol. I think we realize that while the difference one or two picks could potentially be great …the odds that some definitive indication of their merit (good or bad) comes along and proves one side’s point… VERY UNLIKELY.
As far as 2 & 2? Which two was which again that’s so obvious? Without a single game played? I think the point was it takes years to realize the value of past drafts… We may never know the true merit of this one but for sure we don’t now! Let’s let this one simmer awhile shall we?

Save all these kinds of
videos and articles. Save them so you can send them back to those dopes or the people who hire them as a reminder of their insightful commentary when the Broncos end being better than they predicted. (And no they don’t need to make the Super Bowl for them to be proven idiotic.)

Chris Simms will be a much better qb than Orton!!! I think the Cutler trade was a good one. Cutler played ncollege football at Vanderbuilt (hahahahahahahahha) and theres a reason for that. He wasnt recruited by any REAL football schools.
