Vote Now! Denver Broncos 50th Anniversary Team
The 2009 NFL season marks the 50th anniversary of the Denver Broncos. To commemorate the past while embracing the future, the franchise is recognizing its community of fans who have been an integral part of Broncos Country during the first 50 seasons.
As a part of the celebration, fans have the opportunity to select their choice for the All-Time Denver Broncos Team through an online voting tool found at http://www.denverbroncos.com/50th/. Voting begins June 6 and can be completed at Fan Fair or by logging on to DenverBroncos.com any time. Voting concludes Sept. 4.
The players receiving the most fan votes will comprise the 50th Anniversary Team. The resulting team will be honored in person during halftime at the Legacy Game - when the New England Patriots visit INVESCO Field at Mile High on Oct. 11. In addition, one lucky voter will have the opportunity to join the 50th Anniversary Team during this ceremony.
The interactive voting tool features the Broncos' history and highlights spanning the past 50 seasons through the use of video and additional multimedia. Each player is represented by their respective biography, statistics and photographs. Fans register their team choice through the online tool and become part of shaping the 50th Anniversary Team.
The web application was developed by the Broncos' online marketing partner, Akavit - the principle digital agency behind DenverBroncos.com and BroncosCountry.com.
"We are proud of our partnership with the Denver Broncos and are delighted with how the fans have embraced our efforts on BroncosCountry.com and DenverBroncos.com," said Thomas Dahl, vice president of technical strategy at Akavit. "With the release of the 50th Anniversary Team interactive voting system, we hope to engage the fans on a whole new level and further the Broncos' position as an online leader."

Steve Atwater the Greatest Ever
Dear ktown,
Picture this….Monday night football, its the Broncos vs the Chiefs and for the first time ever monday night football is trying a new invention called the helmet cam.Steve Atwater is the first and everyone at Mile High knows it.When they start the game all the talk is about the Cristian Okoye and how powerful a runner he was(Madden actually said unstopable) and when Steve Atwater was told this on the sidelines he became angry. When it was time for the defense to go on the field the turned on the helmet cam and caught Steve Atwater cursing at Okoye telling him to run the ball so that he could “knock the shit out of him” the play was a pass that was audibled to a sweep. On that play Atwater gets cross blocked but because of the conversation before Okoye and Atwater are talking directly to each other now,Atwater yells out to Okoye during their huddle and calls him a "pussy"and dares him to run up the middle,Okoye gets the play change to a dive play and while still on helmet cam and all miked up in Mile High stadium.. Okoye runs down the middle and the blocking is perfect with only Steve Atwater in front of him..Atwater is half the size of Okoye with a weight difference of over 90 pounds and Okoye is running forward with a full head of steam.Atwater is screaming at the top of his lungs and the collision is so loud it makes the whole stadium go silent… as soon as the dust settles there standing over Okoye is one of the Greatest safeties to play the game and he is still screaming but now he is screaming “not in my house!!!” over and over again to a fallen Okoye. The replay goes over the stadium big screen and since its a monday night game the monday night people are in charge of the replay the crowd see’s and this replay was a helmet cam replay…….
When the replay goes on it shows Atwater talking trash and screaming before the hit it also shows the impact that knocked Okoye 4 yards back on his back while Atwater never hit the ground..the impact was so loud on the replay that it sounded like a bomb and the crowd started the mile high stomp of approval with what still is a record decible level……
I was on that monday night football staff and on the sidelines for that game and it was a moment I will never forget…..
That must have been awesome live
Nice word picture cavihit. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Guru
That was cool

Loved that
Did anyone else find it extremely hard to pick just three linebackers? Tommy Jackson, Randy Gradishar, Romo, Al Wilson, Karl Mecklenberg…damn. It was really tough.

Uh-huh.
And the safeties, too.

Yeah...two safeties?
I finally went with Atwater and Smith, but…ugh that was hard!

Smith and Thompson
I knew Atwater would get his votes, and he deserves them. I love the way he played. But without a doubt, Smith was gifted, a more complete player than Atwater and bigger than Thompson. Can’t I have all three?

Ended up picking
Al Wilson, Romo, and Tom Jackson for my LB’s. I was going to pick Mecklenberg in favor of Wilson, but I figured Mecklenberg would get plenty of love and I really appreciated Al Wilson and loved to watch him. Same for Romo, loved to watch him when I was a kid. Most of picks are from the 90s era just because they were all such a large part of my life. That’s why I picked Rod Smith and Eddie Mac for the WR position. Love em all.
The Broncos really have an underrated tradition that seems to be, as jaffe pointed out, mostly rooted in Defense and the awesomeness of the Orange Crush.
J.R. is my homeboy
I really appreciated Wilson...
… but good as he was, Gradishar was even better and for longer. I really hated leaving off Jim Ryan.

Safties and linebackers were impossible...
running backs was a toss up for the other one besides TD. QB and center was no problem at all.
Wide reciever was okay, but there needed to be a third. Tightend was a no-brainer though there should have been two catagories for that as well.

Had no problem with the other RB.
Floyd Little.
That's who I selected as well
it was Little, hands down. Though we have had some other backs contribute greatly while they were Broncos….
That said, Floyd Little may have been one of the best to ever play if you look at what he did with playing on some really mediocre teams, with no real passing game and undersized and overwhelmed OLs.
If he could have been with the Broncos in the 90s, he could have been amazing.

Agreed.
Put Zimmerman and Howard Griffith in front of him and see what happens!
I kinda wish there was an ‘at large’ category so you could add a player that doesn’t fit easily, because Howard Griffith deserves some serious recognition.
Absolutely agree with Howard Griffith.
But I also had no problem with the RB’s and not really a problem with Safety either. Floyd Little is a no-brain, in my opinion.

LOVED TD and no offense but...
…Floyd Little is the best running back who ever put on a Broncos jersey.

Right about LB and SAF.
Definitely two of the best traditions on the team.
I went with Mecklenberg, TJ, and Gradishar at LB and Atwater and Thompson at SAF. Feel really bad that I couldn’t put Dennis Smith in as well. He’s equally worthy.
Lol...
Those were my exact picks for LB and safety.

Me too
Same at LB for me…Gradishar (whom I saw yesterday) TJ, and Meck (Saw yesterday), but my Safeties were Atwater and Smith. I loved Billy Thompson, but Smith was better overall. Had to go Atwater & Smith.

Different strengths.
Thompson was a lot better in coverage. Smith was a bigger hitter.
interesting though
Billy Thompson played 13 yrs / 40 Int’s / voted by peers to 3 Probowls
Dennis Smith played 14 yrs / 30 Int’s / voted by peers to 6 Probowls
Could Thompsons interceptions be higher because he also plyed Corner many years? I think Smith made those around him a little better, although I can’t remember Billy getting burned due to error. I do remember Smith getting lit up once in a while. It was never pretty.

Sorry for the double post but,
I just thought of this. Almost all of my offensive players played on the Superbowl winners. The only guys that weren’t on at least one are Lionel Taylor, Keith Bishop and Floyd Little.
My defense has a lot more variation:
DT: Pryce, Carter
DE: Fletcher, Jackson
LB: Mecklenberg, Gradishar, TJ
CB: Bailey, Wright
SAF: Atwater, Thompson
Tells me the Denver tradition is more defensive than offensive overall. Makes the last few seasons that much more ugly. If you ask people what single person is responsible for the spirit of the Broncos most people would say John Elway. I would lean that way, but I think a really good case could be made that the root of Broncos tradition is Joe Collier.
I think my picks on D are almost ideticle to yours,
But Collier was the best, and we knew it for a long time. The Orange Crush might as well be Collier’s Crush and the D he built after that was pretty darn good too. As a matter of fact, the defense has not been nearly as good ever since he left. I appreciate a lot of what Reeves did for the Broncos but I think he screwed that one up.

If you guys rush there to vote remember these names...
Rick Upchurch—special teams—return specialist
Louis Wright—corner
Goose Gonsoulin—safety
Rich ‘Tombstone’ Jackson—defensive end
Floyd Little—running back
Lionel Taylor—wide receiver
These names are important. Not only did they help us stay competitive when we were either downright bad or in the process of improving—they were really truly great players. As an example…Gonsoulin may still be my favorite player ever. It was 7 thru 11 years old when I watched him—and he was the best Safety, AFL or NFL….period.
Guardian of the Gate to La La Land!
Gonsoulin, Taylor, Little, Wright, Gradishar, Atwater, Davis, and Sharpe...

Goose.
I have Atwater and Billy Thompson as my safeties.
Billy is a great choice
Goose is just a hero of mine. It just seems every time I watched a game he was making an INT. Funny me old-timer

I'm sure it's part when I grew up.
Thompson was a big part of the team before I got in my teens. That was when Broncos players were Gods instead of just athletes :)
Thompson also a CB
Thompson was both a CB and a Safety. I guess that does not help much on this team of starters only, but it sure makes it easier in a 53 man roster.
I agree with jaffe28 that the old guys may well be forgotten in this process.

My Team
Backfield: Elway, Davis, Little
Receivers: R. Smith, L. Taylor, Sharpe
O-Line: Zimmerman, Schlereth, Nalen, Bishop, Lanier
D-Line Fletcher, Pryce, P. Smith, R. Jackson
Linebackers T. Jackson, Gradishar, Mecklenberg
D-Backs Bailey, Gonsoulin, Atwater, Wright
Specialists Elam, Rouen, Upchurch
Don't forget Studdard
I had Zim and Studdard for OT, Schlereth and Bishop for guards, and Nalen for center.
I loved the way Bishop would plant anyone who tried to cheap shot John after the play was over….The guy was a beast.

Always fun strolling down memory lane
I especially love the videos they put up there. I would love to be able to get a copy of those. Like others have stated above, it was hard for the linebackers, safetys, and WRs.
GO BRONCOS IN 2009 AND BEYOND!!

thanks for the link guru
was fun watching the videos & tough making the choices for the vote
Pray for the best, prepare for the worst, and know you will come down somewhere between the two.
Guru This Is Fantastic!
It was already stated, a trip into history and what a trip! First of all I would not have found the link without Guru or MHR. This is the only place to get “important” information – unbaised – on our Broncs.
It was difficult in many of the positions to say, at Safety, take a Dennis Smith over Billy Thompson, but as I looked at the list of all the players, each and everyone of them were TEAM Players. They all should be recognized for what they contributed to the Denver Broncos. Hats off to each and every one of the players.

Thanks!

I voted for Plummer. But only because I knew Elway would win in a landslide, and I wanted to give Jake some props. If I was the only voter, Elway of course hehe.

Why Not a Roster?
I think it is silly to limit the team to starters, as it destroys any capacity to balance out the team over time and to compensate for different types of teams and players.
For that reason, my all-star team is a 53 man roster, which allows for one player per year. Let’s not forget the older guys.
