I've become a big McD fan (and probably Xanders as well),
but yanking around Casey gets me a little riled up. I realize I don’t have all the facts, but giving that guy a raise and locking in his leadership and talent makes a lot of sense to me. And it just seems like the right thing to do…
(Thanks NYC!)

True
I would be surprised if Denver doesn’t. In the past we haven’t been a team to screw around with guys.

It's the kind of cold-blooded salary cap decision we'll need to learn to love
He was really good last year, but he’s 36, wants a multi-year extension, and is vocal about not being 100% devoted to football. How long could we really count on the guy? I’d like to see him stay, but the Broncos now have 3 young interior offensive linemen, two high-cost first-round draft picks, and looming extensions for a lot of quality young players.
Hopefully the get it worked out. But the real goal here is to have the team in good shape in 2 years.

Good point.
Thanks for the response Chibronx.
I suspect you are right on a lot of this AND I still hope we do right by that Iowa boy and bring him back!

Its worth it...
to sign him to a fair contract. But I would of course not make any monies guaranteed given age and likely hood of his retirement at most anytime.

That's the question -- what's fair?
It looks to me like the guy is pretty nakedly saying he wants a retirement cushion. It’s hard to picture him accepting an incentives-based contract. But I hope I’m wrong.

I met David Bruton at a Target south of Denver recently
Nice guy. He seemed surprised to have a fan so early, haha! I welcomed him to Denver, to the Broncos, and told him I can’t wait to see the guys on the field.

Nice... did u recognize him via internet photos?
Or did you have to ask?
That’s impressive if it is the former!
My wife and I think we saw Garrett Wolfe (backup RB on the Bears) at a Target in Bourbonnais (Bears training camp locale and my wife’s hometown), buying a mini(beer?) fridge. However, we didn’t have the cojones to go up to him and ask.
BTW, this was another instance where I was struck by how crazy large these people are… and Garrett Wolfe is a tiny as compared to other football players!!

She was devastated when Kile died. I never really got to meet either of them, but I know that they used to work out with her. But lolcopter, that’s amazing that you recognized him. I still don’t even know what Robert Ayers looks like.

ha, I took a double take
then I walked up to him and was like, “You’re David Bruton! Safety from Notre Dame, right?” Then I told him I recognized him from the Broncos draft.
He was really cool. He shook my hand, then stopped and talked for awhile. I asked how training camp was going and he said they were working hard, and that they had some time off coming up soon where he would be going home to relax for awhile. I told him I would keep an eye out for him on special teams. I would have gotten an autograph, but I had nothing to sign and no pen, ha! He did seem surprised that someone recognized him, but he seemed to appreciate the attention. He appeared to be just as excited about the upcoming season as I did.
I was as giddy as a school girl to be honest, as the only other Bronco I’ve ever met in real life was Rod Smith a few years back. (He was recovering from his injury doing autographs at Niketown. I asked him how he was recovering and what he was doing at Niketown. He replied, “The same thing as you man, buying some shoes. You wanna buy me a pair?” I was like, “Your Rod freaking Smith, you should buy me shoes!” Great guy. I think I made a crack about Blackjack pizza too, haha.)

Keith Kartz
tried to talk my sister into bed at the Smiling Moose in Greeley during training camp once. Didn’t work since she is up to date and knew he was married, but still amusing.
We both went to UNC in Greeley. I got within about ten feet of John Elway one evening walking around campus. Didn’t say nothing to him ‘cause I’m a chicken (and ‘cause I’m sure he gets tired of being bugged). He was huge in person.

One thing I like from the practice report....
Stokely making a ton of catches that were closely covered not only says he’s doing well, but indicates that the QBs are getting their timing and accuracy down in the new system.
Thanks for the work as always nyc :)

Good stuff today, NYC. Thanks again!
The Wiegmann thing makes me nervous, because McDaniels doesn’t seem to play into these kinds of games very well. He’s under contract. A few times this offseason I have thought the player had some leverage, and McDaniels let ‘em go. I don’t think McDaniels bluffs. He doesn’t play the game, and he doesn’t seem to appreciate people who do. I think Wiegmann is as good as gone. He referenced how he thinks it would be different if Shanahan were still around, and I think that’s the nail in the coffin with a new regime trying to create new loyalty.

I couldn't stand to see Weigmnn go.
Mostly because I would miss seeing his wife in the stands.

But I am wary of locking down a 36-year-old vet for a multi-year deal when a decline in his play is inevitable and we have much more important young core players like Brandon Marshall, Peyton Hillis, Ryan Harris, etc., that are going to be due a lot of money very soon. I would rather have Weigmann go now than lose any of our young guys in a couple of years. We have the pieces necessary to replace him- Ben Hamilton is a very good NFL center and we could sub in Lichtensteiger or that Iowa guy we drafted whose name I can never seem to remember at guard.

Getting rid of Wiegmann makes no sense.
Denver can’t afford to let Wiegmann go. If there is one place on Denver’s offense that lacks depth, it’s O-line. Last season, Kory Lichtensteiger did little to prove he is ready to be an NFL starter. The other candidate is a 7th round draft pick. Even if we move Hamilton over to Center, then who takes Ben’s place (a 4th round pick)? No thanks.
Denver enjoyed fantastic pass blocking from their O-line in 2008 and that unit should return intact. Weigmann is getting paid like a back up but he just went to a Pro Bowl. He played an important roll for a unit that was a team strength in 2008. Would we want to give Orton a new Center to work with when we could have a Pro Bowler (alternate) handling these duties.
Now “The Coach” has traded an unknown 1st round pick in a deep draft for a 2nd rounder in a weak draft and he tried to trade Cutler for Cassel so I’m not remotely convinced he understands player value. However, says here he does the right thing and we give Weigmann more coin on a one or two year deal. We have have the cap room. Casey deserves it and Denver really needs him.

The big thing here is Wiegmann needs to be reasonoable
Same thing with Marshall asking for more money. Wiegmann did come off a pro bowl season, but we need more than just one or two seasons. If that’s the solution he presents (since he’s already 36 and considering retirement), then he should retire. If he wants a bunch of money for a 3-4 season contract that he will only play 1 or 2 seasons of, then don’t let the door hit you on the way out buddy.
Both these guys I think SHOULD get more money…in for form of agreed upon incentive-based money. Get the stats, get the money. Don’t get suspended, get the money. Play 3 years, get the money.
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

Very true...
Weigmann was signed as a backup and he turned out not just to be a starter but a strong contributor. I think he absolutely deserves a new contract for two years. Give him any more than that, though, and the Broncos will reduce the effectiveness of this team when all of its young stars are in their prime.
I like the idea of an incentive-based third year. That would be the best compromise- if both parties are willing to compromise.

My understanding is that contracts are striclty Xandders province....
I would say they will do what is necessary with Wiegman, once they have locked up their draft picks. That is the priority now as they have to be signed to be in camp. Once that is done, the team will have a better picture of where they stand with money and cap room and they can address Wiegman’s situation with a more realistic focus. Does that mean he may have to be in camp before that is done….don’t know, but I suspect there will be communication between now and then… he has earned the right to have the conversation with his play.

good points by both you and chibronx
I think the thing to watch for now (as fans) is whether Casey starts getting informed by the team, and kept in the loop. He isn’t getting paid any more or less than any other player right now (players make $130 a day in 2009, plus some travel and room and board expenses where appropriate) for participating in voluntary minicamps in the offseason.
The mandatory camps are a little different, and the player will get payed a prorated portion of their standard weekly pay under their contract, plus certain travel and board expenses, and Denver’s first mandatory camp is this weekend I believe, so it would be nice if the team is at least in negotiations with him by that time.
By commenting now, Wiegmann is basically putting the team on notice that he hasn’t forgotten…standard prenegotiation stuff, I am sure. Casey’s agents job is to remind the team that Casey has leverage, and that is what they are doing.
Again, unless he is being stonewalled and left out of the loop, I would say that things are going according to a standard, cap-wise and team-friendly methodology for a new contract. Remember that we still have a number of rookie contracts to sign, almost all of which have more precedence over Casey in terms of long term viability and room to maneuver. I think his contract will be tied into how those rookie negotiations pan out, especially the first three picks. The better those deals are, the more likely Casey gets exactly what he wants.
But if we start hearing reports about how the Broncos won’t talk to Casey, than the writing is on the wall: they aren’t planning on resigning him at the price tag he wants. Good or bad? I’ll wait until I hear more about how he is playing right now, as well as how Ten Tigers, Olsen and Schlueter are coming along.
There is no army so powerful as an idea whose time has come.

“We’re going to use every skill he has,” McDaniels said. “He does a lot of things well. He can run the ball as a single back or he can catch the ball out of the backfield. He can block in two-back sets or he can split out wide. He’s got great hands and he’s a very tough runner to bring down when you give him the ball. So he’ll do a lot of different things for us.”
