McDaniels beginning to attract believers in Denver

Steve Wyche of NFL.com posts an article that might even be called positive or positively slanted towards the success of Coach McDaniels and the Broncos.  The article is referenced HERE.

Wyche's opening quote "He (McDaniels) has come under heavy criticism for his way of doing business, not having a plan, being too young, too arrogant, too brash, too bold.

The article goes on to emphasis that McDaniels does have a plan and the players are starting to believe in the plan.

Star-divide

From the article:

McDaniels was a hit at a recent Broncos fan festival and his once suspect on-field plan, now that it's been set in motion through a series of passing camps, has piqued players' belief that maybe this guy is on to something.

According to McDaniels, the coaching and front office staffs' unflinching commitment to the blueprint that was laid out to players upon McDaniels' arrival is what has helped get and keep his team's attention. Well, everything except the Cutler Saga. And to some degree, even that unforeseen situation fell in line with the plan.

A plan that says no one player is bigger than the team and that the team can beat any opponent if players focus only on doing their jobs.

It's the model that has proven successful in New England

"..From the first team meeting in the middle of March we laid out our vision and we really stuck to the things we told them we were going to stick to".

"That is hard work, evaluating everything we're doing to try to make it the best we can make it and that every player's got a job to do.

It's been my experience that if 11 players do their job on a play we're going to win that play. We've really followed through in pounding that message home."

McDaniels, as he did in New England, will control the offense. He will attempt to get Orton and Simms, quarterbacks with career completion percentages below 60 percent, to run a system where quarterbacks typically complete well above that mark. Not only are Simms and Orton believers, knowing that Cassel, a career backup, completed 63 percent of his passes, threw for 3,693 yards and had 21 touchdowns in the same scheme in 2008, they've seen positive things happen in practice with the offense.

"It's a great system. It puts a lot of demands on us mentally. It gets guys open and it's your job to get them the ball and let them do what they do," said Orton, who registered career highs in yards (2,972), touchdowns (18) and completion percentage (58.5) last season with the Bears.

Steve Wyche was on the Denver Fan radio Monday afternoon (Sorry the interview has not yet been posted at 1043the fan.com)

My overall take on the Wyche radio conversation is that there should be a lot of hope for the Broncos this year because of the vision of McDaniels and the coaching staff.   He has had unequaled success in elevating the play of the QB's in his system and there is no reason to suspect that the same will not happen in Denver.  And with the Offense of the Broncos already being one of the best, the improvements in the system should even produce better results.

Steve Wyche in the interview kept on referring to the success of the Super Bowl  Arizona Cardinals.  The success of the offense for Arizona was without question the strong point of the team, however, the defense was only average at best.  But the defense was opportunistic and succeeded in the Take Away dept., leading to more opportunites for the Arizona offense to win the games.

This sooooooo sounds like the Denver Broncos of 2009.

There is a plan in place and I believe it will prove to be the success of the Broncos sooner (in 2009) than later.

The lemmings will follow. What’s beautiful is that Wyche basically summed up basic ideas that have been talked about at MHR for weeks now. I guess its some good Kool Aid….

Sorry...no hoodies

They don’t get any until I get one. I’ve been a fan of hiring McDaniels from the the beginning of this process. :P

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

In case anybody mistakes my lemming analogy...

…as negative or anti-McDaniels, let me just propose that it is possible to jump off a righteous cliff.

I’m pretty sure after watching Tom Waddle praise Knowshon Moreno and the pick NOW (he was about to pee himself he hated the pick so bad right around draft day) that we are entering a period of McDaniels love at the national level. Pretty much everybody is going to trip over themselves to say, ‘Wait, like I’ve been meaning to say, there HAS ALWAYS been a plan….". It’s just amazing to watch it play out.

In 84 Bowlen saved the Broncos from bankruptcy

in 2009 he saved us from stagnation…

Winning comes from a philosophy that starts at the top. Isn’t it odd that certain teams continue to do poorly regardless of the players or coaches they bring in. It starts from the top and trickles down…

Regardless of the coach or QB, the Broncos are bred to win!

Broncos underdogs vs. Bengals

I just heard that the current line in Vegas has the Bengals at home laying 1 against the Broncos.

Cha-Ching!

An interesting article, at first I thought you had misspelled the name

and I thought it was Sam Wyche, and I thought, great one of the few nut job coaches thinks the Broncos are on the right track, but well written. Time will obviously tell how this team reacts once we have a loss or two, that will be when we learn what the makeup is andd how much the team really buys in or is paying lip service out of fear of losing a pay check.

Growth comes out of Adversity

I do not wish loses on the Broncos, but until they are knocked down and have to pull themselves up by their collective boot straps they will struggle to perform at a higher level.

The sooner the team gets knocked down, then the sooner the team will realize that they are in a fight, and they will have to get back up and persevere in the fight to achieve even a small amount of success.

Coach McDaniels has lived through success and failure and out of that success – research his Bio - even way back when he played High School football and lost the historic 100th Massillon-McKinley because of his failed PAT.

McDaniels is one that has been there in failure, and overcome for success – Hence he can help lead a team to success even when failure comes.

Great post broncobh

Nice article link. The firing of Shanhan and hiring McDaniels brought about a new era for the Broncos. It is a time of change that doesn’t always come easily. This will undoubtedly take time and we will all have to bear with it. McD is bringing in a new philosophy to Denver. We are getting players that will fit certain roles and not have character issues. This is a team sport and not one player can do it all by himself, so it is good to see the players understanding that. I mean we have all seen it and read it in the many interviews.

Not Buying In Quite Yet

I fully expect there to be a honeymoon phase that never happened before due to the controversy of which we should no longer speak.

Let’s see where we are in November and December.

I will, however, enjoy the summer magazine analyses. They are fun to read.

Good post.

The Plan

I think it’s been pretty clear from day one McDaniels had a plan. A lot of people were just upset because they couldn’t figure out what it WAS.

Now, how that’s different from any other team with a new coach I don’t know. It isn’t like they’re going to publish their whole approach complete with playbook on the team website.

by TheMastermind on Jun 10, 2009 8:56 AM MDT reply actions

Sticking with the Plan

I think consistency is incredibly important too. Coaches always come in and say they want quality players with good attitudes but how many of them follow through? How many times do you see coaches say they want to build a team mentality then tell their all-pro ego at WR that he can take training camp off or give him special treatment? The message to the team becomes, yes the coach says one thing but he does something different.

I see this mentality all too often in the workplace across various departments where these attitudes arise and it always stems from the leadership.

McDaniel’s willingness to not just talk the talk, but to walk the walk with his most noteworthy player and ego, I personally feel, bought him instant credibility and trust with the players. He may have netted far more with his team than he potentially lost as so many theorized.

Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.

Positive Attitude
“The main thing, as one of the leaders of this team, is to buy into what the coach is doing. That way, the others follow,” veteran Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey said after an OTA practice on Monday at the Broncos’ practice facility. “You can’t talk negative. I don’t care if it is stuff that’s real or not. You’ve got to be positive. You keep things positive, guys will feed into it and want to win for this guy.”

I was reading this and in many ways think MHR is the leadership for the Broncos’ Fans.

Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.

The Plan

I’ve been bemused at the fuss about how ‘McDaniels doesn’t have a plan". The first time that he sat down with the Broncos he set out, in detail, a plan for reviving this moribund franchise. He spoke from his notes and extemporaneously for over 6 hours on that plan just in the first meeting, including in it aspects of offense, defense and special teams. There were obviously still things that he (and later, Xanders) had to flesh out on specifics once all of the players had been reviewed and the free agents targeted, and that would take much more time. However – he had so much detail and so many specifics that both Pat and Joe Ellis (who met with him separately in the first meetings) would be amazed at how well he understood both where they were and what it was going to take to get them back to the championship.

The idea that he didn’t have a plan flew in the face of every fact that we have access to. I don’t know what the specifics were. I do know that he expanded on this plan in later meetings, including those with Jim Goodman who was favorably impressed at this time (later disagreements were mostly centered around differing personnel views between Xanders and Jeff Goodman, Jim’s son). Whether one chooses to like McDaniels or hate him, he is extremely detail oriented and organized. He has a plan, he’s always had one, and suggesting anything else just shows a lack of familiarity with the subject at hand.

I agree on the Plan

The preparation that McDaniels put in for the first interview must have been amazing. To be the only candidate to be offered a second interview shows IMO that he had studied the Broncos team in all aspects and also offered up to Bowlen and Joe Ellis an elaborate plan of his own to cast a vision of where the Broncos could be with him at the helm.

Again, there has been criticism by some of McDaniels unorthodox preparation for the draft. He admitted that he and his staff only had about 100 names on the Broncos draft board. Most teams have about 300. Some people believe that this shows his lack of a plan and being unprepared for the draft. To me that shows that he had a plan. He had narrowed done the potential draft picks to exactly who he wanted; and as he showed in the draft he was not afraid to do a little “Wheeling and Dealing” to move around in the draft to get whom he wanted. Only time will tell if his unorthodox approach will show better results than other methods. But he has the guts to follow his plan.

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also DREAM; not only plan, but also BELIEVE.

Hold on

You’re saying that the conversation between McDaniels and Bowlen DIDN’T go like this?

Bowlen: So tell me what you’re thinking for the future of the Denver Broncos.
McDaniels: Uh… like…. to win and stuff. A lot. Like 5 Superbowls in a row. Yeah.
Bowlen: You’re hired! How much shall I make the check out for?

Jeeze Bear, next thing you know you’ll tell me that Santa doesn’t really exist! ;)

The idea that the guy had no plan at all just doesn’t pass any sort of smell test, assuming that you believe Bowlen hasn’t entirely lost his mind, and I don’t think anyone’s made that argument anywhere.

Chin Music

When you think about it, the whole team-first “Patriot Way” plan must have been a major part of McDanials’ interview presentation and must have been very appealing to Bowlen. This plan is the very reason the whole Cutler thing made sense to me all along. Can you think of a better way for a young, 32 year old coach to come in and assert his will than to throw a little chin music at Jay Cutler?

Jay may be a kind, down-to-earth, team-first guy undeserving of any chin music from the new young coach for all I know. However, there is strong evidence that he may have been a good target for a little ego check. For one, he was the biggest target— the “franchise” QB, the face of the franchise. Moreover, you have the Fastis book portrayal, his arm-stregnth-Elway comments, repeatedly bashing Rivers publicly when he could have taken the high road, his teammates comments (Champ (paraphrasing) “he has a personality that may suprise some people”), his “no one called me” reaction to Shanny’s firing, and his overall handling of the Matt Cassel trade rumors, to name a few.

I don’t know how it went down, but I’m willing to bet that the Cassell rumor was the straw that broke the camel’s back, not the opening salvo. I have a feeling that something else happened immediately after McDanials was hired. Perhaps Cutler lobbied for Bates’ job directly and McDanials told him something along the lines of “I’ll hire whomever I damn well please and don’t need your input”, or maybe the coach told the player that in no uncertain terms he was the boss and fully expected the player to fall in line. Now, I’m not saying that McD wanted to ship him out of town, but I do think that he wanted to come in and buzz his tower a little bit— if not publicly, then definitely in the locker room.

Well, we all know how it turned out, and I feel the franchise will be better off in the long run. Especially if this whole mess helped our new coach implement his plan.

"Talking tough is easy when it's other people's evil and you're judging what they do or don't believe. It seems to me you'd have to have a hole you're own to point a finger at somebody else's sheet" -- Mike Cooley
