Your 2009 Denver Broncos Starting Line Up v3.0 Defense

This is version 3 in my attempt to look at trends and competition across the roster and starting positions of the Broncos.  I'm splitting this one into two posts - Offense and Defense - so that I can look a bit more into the competition over roster spots.  As well as versions 1 and 2 there will be a fourth version out before the official depth chart appears.

so here goes version 3 Defense, which I've subtitled "The Ryan McBean Post"

Star-divide

Cornerback and Safety

The safe picks - I think Alphonso Smith will win the starting job, the comments on the previous versions suggest that the majority of people don't think he'll start this year.  I am softening my position to say that Smith will start a couple of games at some point during the year.

Andre Goodman
Champ Bailey
Alphonso Smith
Brian Dawkins
Renaldo Hill
David Bruton
Darcel McBath

The Competition - Josh Barrett vs Jack Williams. Its entirely possible that they're not both going to make the final roster.  Barrett had the slightly better numbers in his rookie season but signing four new safeties in the off season doesn't really bode well.  And Jack Williams didn't have a good rookie year although maybe we're expecting too much from a guy who came into the team with stand-out players like Ryan Clady, Eddie Royal and Peyton Hillis.  They're both going to make my final roster this time but if I need to find an extra spot for someone then this is being revisited.

Josh Barrett
Jack Williams

The Surprise - I'd be absolutely shocked if the DBs contained anyone of the 9 players listed above.

Inside Linebackers and Nickel Linebackers

Safe Picks -Davis and Williams are about the only players I've heard Coach McDaniels talk about as locked in starters for particular positions.  Everything else has been about competition and versatility but these two along with Woodyard seem very safe picks.

Andra Davis
DJ Williams
Wesley Woodyard

Almost Certain - Nick Greisen and Spenser Larsen are pretty certain to be in the final roster but there's just this nagging doubt I have about them.  I'm confident they'll be on the roster but they're that one step below being absolute certainties.

Nick Greisen
Spenser Larsen

The surprise - DB.com had a good article on how Lee Robinson seems to be following a similar path to Wesley Woodyard so there's a chance he could sneak in depending on the balance of the roster and a good chance he could make the Practice Squad.  But my potential surprise for Training Camp will be Spenser Larsen really pushing hard for a starting place and tearing the field up during the pre-season.  Will that be enough to get him a start though?  Probably not.

Rush Ends and Outside Linebackers

I'm splitting these players from the other defensive linemen because I can see them as two separate groups.

Safe Picks - Gee this one is tough.  Without a recognised SAM linebacker, there will be an awful lot of pressure on this group to be good at covering a TE on passing downs, even if it is in a shallow zone.  Cutting Boss Bailey, while unfortunate and predictable, will probably force the Broncos into playing more 3-4 than 4-3.  That said, there are probably only 3 Defensive Linemen that are absolutely guaranteed their roster spot and two of them are here.

Robert Ayres
Elvis Dumervil

The competition - There's competition all over this area.  Darrell Reid came in as a free agent and from all reports I've read he seems to have settled in well.  His potential to play tackle, end and OLB means he's favourite for one of the other spots.  But there's going to be a fierce competition between Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder for that final spot.  For me this is one of the potential weak spots on the roster.  While I like the idea of Ayres and Dumervil as starters, their experience in a 3-4 defense is limited and the depth worries me.  Although I am predicting Moss will come out over Crowder but won't rule out the possibility of them both sneaking on to the roster.  And its also worth considering special teams ace Mario Haggan as an outside shot although he is probably better suited to MLB.

Darrell Reid
Jarvis Moss

The surprise - This group is prime candidate for someone to step up and completely shock everyone.  It may be that the anointed starters prove to be as good as we hope or as bad as we fear.  There's also plenty of chance for someone to come out of this with a brand new career as a starter and a potential superstar.  Personally, I expect to be pleasantly surprised by Darrell Reid - especially on Special Teams

Defensive Line and Defensive Tackle

Safe Picks - Is there such a thing with this group?  Ok, maybe only Ronald Fields.  If you're lucky enough to be going to Training Camp, I don't expect you to watch anything else other than the D-Line.  This is where the biggest competition in Camp is going to be.  There are 11 players I am considering for seven spots but the only absolute certainty is Fields.

Ronald Fields

Almost certain - I said at the top that this was going to be subtitled the Ryan McBean post.  I'll admit, I've been completely blind-sided by him.  I didn't even think he stood a chance, I don't think I've even considered him in any of the previous versions and yet if you look at the starters in passing camp - there he is.  Sure it could change once the pads go on but McBean and Kenny Peterson are the current incumbents and therefore, along with Marcus Thomas, they're on my Almost Certain list.  I do wonder about Thomas though - I get this feeling that he holds the highest potential to be this year's Montrae Holland but I'm not worried enough to predict him as a cut.

Kenny Peterson
Marcus Thomas
Ryan McBean

The competition - Everyone vs Everyone Else.  Three roster spots and seven players - Rulon Davis, Everette Pedescleaux, J'Vonne Parker, Carlton Powell, Nic Clemons, Matthias Askew and Chris Baker.  I have a gut feeling for Powell and Parker but I can't back that up with any reasoning.  In the end the reson why there is so much competition is that no one knows what is going to happen with this group.  The current "starters" from the last camp were Peterson, Fields and McBean but would anyone be shocked if the season started with Powell, Baker and Thomas?  Or even Clemons, Parker and Davis?  There's the most competition in this area of the team - more than any other position, so I'm reticent in putting names down and that's not even considering the fact that if the roster shakes down in a different way, we may only be talking about two names here and not three.  But here goes:

Carlton Powell
Chris Baker
J'Vonne Parker

Defensive Roster is complete

I'm keeping 9 DBs, 9LBs and 7DLs.  The offense should be a lot easier than the defense, it looks a much more settled unit.  So as a final parting shot, here's my 3-4 starting line up

Bailey, Hill, Dawkins, Goodman

Dumervil, Williams, Davis, Ayres

Thomas, Fields, Peterson

Nice analysis -rec'd

Because of the hybrid nature of some of the players, it may not end up at 9 DL and 9LB. But all in all, I think you’re pretty close.

Wherever you go, there you are.

Wow

I feel like I’ve been to a rave with all the colored words! :-O (and curious to know how you did it)

EXCELLENT breakdown. The D-Line competition is going to be fierce! Could I ask who you see going on the practice squad? I like your crystal ball even if it is before training camp.

Another breakdown that I would enjoy is for Special Teams. I freely admit that my ST knowledge is really poor.

I’m a web designer so its a bit of a hack on the html view.
I’ll put some possible practise squad ideas in the offsense post (due some point this weekend!)

Thanks mike, and you don't think Rulon Davis or Everette Pedescleaux don't make the roster?

That seems interesting to me and I know the competition will be intense, but never count a Marine out.

by bfree2bronc on Jul 10, 2009 7:40 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

I was thinking the same thing bfree....

I think either Rulon or Everette (possibly both) could end up making this squad. I think we have a tendency to look past Pedescleaux since he came out of a FCS school instead of a BCS school. Anyway both these men have good size and quickness, we’ll just have to see if they get the defense and fight for a spot.

BTW, good post Mike, Rec’d

Not Ruled out Rulon

I’m kinda regretting not giving him Parker’s spot. Can I do a quick edit? Will anyone notice?

Very good, and rec'd.

It will be very interesting to see how things play out on the DL and LB fronts, especially since we know so litle about what sort of D we’ll be playing. But one thing is really clear: Which group of players would you rather have – the 09 players (see above) or last years bunch going into training camp, which included, at LB: Boss Bailey, Jordan Beck, Louis Green, Niko Koutovides, Nate Webster, D.J. Williams, and Jamie Winborn. And at DL: Larry Birdine, Paul Carrington, Tim Crowder, Elvis Dumervil, Ebeneezer Ekuban, John Engelberger, Carlos Hall, Steven Harris, Josh Mallard, Alvin McKinley, Jarvis Moss, Kenny Peterson, Dewayne Robertson, and Marcus Thomas.

The sage is full of anxiety and indecision in undertaking anything, and so he is always successful.

Thanks for this!

The D-line competition is going to be fierce. Who wants it the most? Who learns the quickest? Who has the best technique? Who gets hurt or has the best durability? Who has the most adaptability? I get tingles just thinking about it. Rec’D

Nice write up!

I haven’t seen the first 2 versions so I don’t know if there’s been any debate about this, but I prefer Josh Bell to Jack Williams. I know sentimentality is against me with the J.Will – D.Will comparisons, but Bell showed me more last year where it matters most than Jack did.

This is what we wanted...
Hey, look what we got!

by pubkeeper on Jul 10, 2009 10:05 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

At OLB I would pick Crowder over Moss because Crowder was given some first team reps whereas Moss didn’t do much.

At DL: I think it will be Thomas, Fields, McBean

I don’t see Parker making this team honestly. I have not heard much about him out of camp and I don’t think he is all that “versatile” whereas Fields can play 0 or 5 technique and same with Baker, Thomas, and possibly Powell (I think that is our rotation right there).

At DB: I really like Barrett but I don’t think he makes this team. There have been too many signings at S. If he could play CB he might make this team.

At DE: McBean and either Davis or Pedescleux and the other one goes to the practice squad.

by foolio_2000 on Jul 10, 2009 10:08 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Tim Crowder

I have to admit that one of my favorite pass-times lately has been trying to figure out this starting front-seven mess. I’m going to be glued to the news out of camp and preseason to see who’s working out with whom and at what position. I haven’t been this excited about preseason … ever!

If you are impressed that Ryan McBean got so many reps with the first team D in passing camp (like I was), you have to be just as impressed that Tim Crowder got a lot of looks with the same squad in the same camp. I have this feeling that he’s currently one of the top three or four OLB on the depth chart (with Ayers, Doom, and Reid) and could make an impact this year. It all could change once the pads go on!

by BroncosBassist on Jul 10, 2009 12:25 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Nice Write-Up

I love how it was organized and structured, it looks really good. I liked what you wrote and agree with a bunch of it.

I think that Pedescleaux may have a decent shot at making the roster, perhaps over Parker, but right now who really knows.

by studbucket on Jul 10, 2009 1:53 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Facts, just the facts

@MikeB…
My D squad is close to yours but with adjustments. Like all posters have stated, lets see when the pads are on.
I keep all 5 safeties. Josh Barrett showed last year that he can take a TE out of play (great job on Gonzales). Maybe a sub SAM.
I do agree about Jack Williams and Josh Bell. One stays and I think Jack because of ST again.
DL, wow who knows. I still think Coach Nunnely rotates 6-7 players. Versatility is the key so it does not matter DE or NT. Lets get the pads on.
From minis it seems like McBean, Fields, Peterson, Thomas, Baker, Powell, and Davis/Pedescleaux. Parker and Askew seem out.
I really love the thought for Larsen to really push Davis and Williams. Lee Robinson will make the 53. Surprise cut LB Griesen, due to lack of ST.
I too think Phonze will start at RCB because two times when Andre Goodman was signed, it was stated that his natural position is nickle.
My surprise camp pick, along with Mr. Robinson, is Domonique Johnson CB. He just might find a nich somewhere.

LOve these posts, thanks

by DLMyers on Jul 10, 2009 2:17 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Versatility

There’s that word again. The key word since McD got to Denver. I think the biggest Difference we’ll see from Denver is the coaches adapting to player talents instead of forcing players to play a position/system/scheme/situation that they don’t have the talent for. IMO

Great post

And discussions, the only thing I can add here, is I’d like to see us keep both Josh Barrett and Jack Williams (and I still can’t get over not even giving Nate Webster or Jamie Winborn a chance before cutting them – LoL )

Rockin’ on mikebirty!

Jamie Winborn.

I thought he was one of the best starters for LB we had on the field last year. He was a consistant tackler and always seemed to be right where you needed him to be. It is sad that we didn’t keep him. I heard something about that release being all Mike Nolan’s call; supposedly he didn’t like him in SanFran either..? Is there any truth to that or is it rumor?

by USMCWall on Jul 10, 2009 5:31 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

He lacked discipline...

was almost as bad as Webster in over pursuit and missed assignments. Sometimes he would be in the right place foir the worng reason and make a play. But often he wasn’t where he was supposed to be.

It's true

Winborn played the game of his life one week – three weeks later he was demoted and then tossed. I did a piece that included it with the life story of Winborn, which is an amazing tale.

Damn

Thanks for the article link.
That was before my time here at MHR, and haven’t been too inclined to look through the archives for players we DON’T have any longer, so I never would have seen that, or known about how he grew up, and still turned out the bad-a$$ he is.

I haven’t seen him, Nate, or Ekuban signed by anyone yet still, is that correct?
Where would one find that out?

I haven't heard of anyone signing them either

In fact, you could check the FA lists in The Sporting News daily – if you’re not getting it, you should. It’s free, and it’s often high quality work.

And didn’t see anything likely, it brings up ‘Sporting News Today’ and a generic looking blogspot called ‘SportingNewsDaily’ that when you click on the nfl link, it brings you to nfl.com – LoL, do you have link by chance?

And thanks again, by the way

I'm surprised about Ekuban

I thought he’d have been back in Denver or at least wouldn’t struggle to get another shot. He always gave everything he had.

Gave it all...

And produced consistently for us…. I thought. Granted he only got 5 sacks last year, but I don’t think he was rotated in quite as much as years before.
Gonna miss ’im.

Indeed

It was a great post. I think you’re brave to even attempt a D-line prediction post, lol. Its so much of an unknown going into training camp.

With McD’s player qualities emphasis, and the evolving defensive scheme, its hard to really even know which players talents will be needed the most. They are all fairly unique and most carry a heavy amount of versatility, veteran experience, or a much needed strength (i.e. run stopping or pash rushing).

The only locks I would bet any money on are Dawkins in the backfield (every defense needs a great signal caller and we’ve been lacking that ever since Lynch left) Alphy as a nickel back (who I agree will DEFINATELY get at least one start come wintertime), and Ayers as an OLB/Rushing End.

…Im also remembering that post on DB.com talking about D.J. Williams as the “Jack” back in Nolan’s scheme. He was also one of the few LB’s from last year that managed not to get cut, so they HAD to see something extraordinary in him. I’d be willing to bet he’s a lock at ILB for opening day.

by USMCWall on Jul 10, 2009 5:44 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Great work, Mike!

I must admit, I have scratched my head quite a bit at this subject. At the safety spot, we all know Dawk is gonna have one of the two spots on lock down. I am curious to see how the other spot plays out. I know it seems likely that Hill will be the other guy, but I have this striking suspicion that one of the young guys will be out there. I have researched Mcbath some, and it seems that this kid is a natural playmaker. I would really like to see him shine for us. I would love to say “you just got Mcbathed.” I am gonna go ahead and coin that phrase now, lol. We have lacked playmakers for some time in our defensive backfield, and I think all that is about to change.

I believe our linebackers will be the strength of the defense this year, and I agree with your starters. DJ and Andra (has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?) are your starting RILB and LILB, respectively. Then you have Doom and Gloom (Ayres) at your outside spots. We should have some decent depth here as well. Overall, I’m really liking this group.

As far as the D-line is concerned, I’m really not sure what exactly to expect. I still think this spot is a potential weakness for us. None of the players we have (as of this moment) really strike fear in my heart. D-line has been a problem area for us for the longest time. We have had good ones over the years, but we let them go, or for whatever reason, they stopped playing for us. Pryce, Hayward and Berry are just three I can think of off the top of my head.

I’ve been wanting to vent about this for the longest. What in the HELL was with what I like to call “The Cleveland Experiment”. I know Shanahan is widely regarded as an excellent coach, but I really questioned some of his moves. He is the reason we are in this mess in the first place.

I really like Carlton Powell. I have a hunch about this kid. VT’s D has been one of the best year in and year out and he was in the middle of it all while he was there. I like this from db.com “He Finished his Virginia Tech career as the only Division I-A player who held opponents to negative rushing yards (-13 yds. on 106 att.) on running plays directed at him according to NFLDraftScout.com.” That is pretty bada$$. I think this guy could be special. He is coming off a ruptured achilles, so last season was pretty much a wash. If he can stay healthy I think he will become a starter at one of the end spots. I like Fields and Peterson to round it out as well.

This is how I would like to see us come out on opening day:

 Goodman, Mcbath, Dawkins, Bailey
   Dumervil, Williams, Davis, Ayres
         Powell, Fields, Peterson

Again, this is just my take on things. Rock n’ roll.

Take my advice, I'm not using it !!!

Powell

Yeah I wish he’d have been on the field last year, A years experience – even in a poor system – would’ve put him as a starter this year. Like you, I’ve seen his stats and his reviews and I think he could be good but I want to see him hitting people and crashing the pocket – but I think if he doesn’t start the season a starter, he could finish the season one (or start next year as one)

by mikebirty on Jul 12, 2009 4:39 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Powell

I have high hopes for him also, but I expect to see Marcus Thomas as the other starter at DE (plus Peterson) instead of Powell. thomas has two years experience in the trenches by now, and was regarded as the best D player on Florida until he got in trouble with Coach Meyer.

The sage is full of anxiety and indecision in undertaking anything, and so he is always successful.

Yea, you guys are right.

The more I think about it, the more I like Thomas as a starter. 2 years and a leg up can’t hurt his chances. I think Baker is the dark horse in all of this. The kid is also a hell of a dancer, so we have that going for us :)

Take my advice, I'm not using it !!!

by grind_core on Jul 12, 2009 2:34 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Very good stuff.

Like you, I think the SAFs and CBs are easier. The OLBs and DEs are very, very hard to predict. Thanks for taking the time to put up your thoughts and back them up. Can’t wait to see how it ends up panning out.
