Your 2009 Denver Broncos Starting Line Up v3.1 Offense
Welcome to part 3.1 of my series looking at the potential starters and roster spots available. Part 3.0 was dedicated entirely to Defense and parts 1 and 2 are still available to. They look at the situation on the roster straight after the draft and after OTAs. I'm hoping to have version 4.0 out before the first official depth chart.
The offensive roster is much easier than the defensive one to put together. On the surface, there's much less competition and more areas where the leaders and starters are clear. I'm subtitling this one - The "Can't We Get Centers with Names That Are Easy to Spell" post.
Quarterback
The Safe Picks - All three QBs will be on the final roster. I toyed with the idea of putting Tom Brandstater on the Practise Squad but I don't see him clearing waivers.
Kyle Orton
Chris Simms
Tom Brandstater
The competition - Thankfully the QB competition is over and isn't going to drag on into the first week of camp. Having a front runner and a key guy is important. There can't have been many teams who have posted winning season who have started camp with a QB controversy.
The Surprise - Brandstater could hit the Practise Squad but its unlikely. There seems to be enough roster spots to go around. So the only surprise will come from how well Brandtater plays in the pre-season. It'll be very reassuring to see all three of them completing passes and handing the ball off with no hiccups or problems. A good showing in a couple of games from Brandstater could see him in line for a bigger role next season.
Running Backs
The Safe Picks - I jumped out of my chair, partly with shock and partly with excitement, when Knowshon Moreno was picked. I can't wait to see him carrying the ball. I can't wait to see him catching a pass. I can't remember the last time I was this excited over a first round pick. Knowshon and Peyton Hillis are going to be so popular this year. 0-16, 4-12, 8-8, 12-4, 16-0 it won't matter these guys are going to be great and - depending on your outlook - are going to make a bad football team mediocre, a mediocre football team good or a good football team into a contender.
Knowshon Moreno
Peyton Hillis
The competition - A common theme running through the off-season has been the number of healthy running backs needed for an entire season. While this lessens the competition around spots because it should be easy to get on the roster, there's plenty of competition for what role is available. The main back-up role seems to be up for grabs although Correll Buckhalter has to be favourite at the moment.
Correll Buckhalter
LaMont Jordan
Ryan Torrain
The surprise - Ryan Torrain. Torrain could end up as the back up, the kick returner, the change of pace back OR he could be number 5 on the chart, barely dress for a game, get injuired AGAIN, start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform List or be completely cut. I can't say for any certainty that I know what's going to happen but I think he gets a spot.
Tight Ends
The Safe Picks - All three of them are pretty easy to pick. Daniel Graham, Tony Scheffler and Richard Quinn all make the roster and will all see the field at various points in the season.
Daniel Graham
Tony Scheffler
Richard Quinn
The competition - Tony Scheffler vs The System vs Misconceptions. "Tony Scheffler isn't suited to the New England style of offense" and "Coach McDaniels doesn't use Tight Ends to catch passes" are two of the phrases you're bound to have heard this off-season. I can't wait to find out if they're true or not. (I tend towards them not being true) I can't see how you can have a good pass catching tight end and not use him. I will be happy if, after the pre-season, Tony has hit one long streak down the field and been hit perfectly in stride by Orton.
The Surprise - Let's talk "ifs". IF a team like Philly or New York or one of the ones that thinks its a contender was to lose a tight end and IF they offered a conditional pick that could be a 2nd to a 5th for Scheffler and IF it was at the right time then he could be on his way and IF that happens Jeb Putzier could find a roster spot.
Wide Receivers
The Safe Picks - Brandon Stokley, Eddie Royal and Brandon Marshall should strike fear into the hearts of other teams. Couple this with Jabar Gaffney, who seems to be built specifically for this New England style offense and who I think will prove to be the best Free Agent acquisition of the offseason, and you've got 4 recievers who could be productive in any offense with any quaterback. Anyone who's not excited about seeing these four lining up together isn't paying attention.
Brandon Stokely
Eddie Royal
Brandon Marshall
Jabar Gaffney
The competition - Kenny McKinley is the only draft pick that left me scratching my head. I just couldn't see why. I can see why the others made the Broncos better, either now or in the future, but this is one that I just couldn't get my head round. Still, its rare that you see 5th Round picks dropped before camp so he'll find a spot. Which leaves one receiver spot open. Chad Jackson vs Brandon Lloyd for the final spot. I'm tempted to flip a coin. I think it will be Jackson because of his history with New England and because I think he offers more as a potential Kick and Punt Returner.
Kenny McKinley
Chad Jackson
The Surprise - There are a few college free agents who may come out of camp with an outside shot at the roster. I'm particularly interested in hearing anything anyone has seen or knows about David Grimes. He's a product of Notre Dame, who's coach is? who used to coach at? who is responsible for the thinking behind the offense that will be played at where? I would have thought he was a dead cert for the Practice Squad if he doesn't make the Roster.
Tackles and Guards and Centers
The Safe Picks - All five starters return and are a safe picks to not only be on the roster, to not only start the first game but also to carry on from their successful 2008 and hit 2009 running.
Ryan Clady
Ryan Harris
Chris Kuper
Ben Hamilton
Casey Wiegmann
The Competition - There are three spots behind the starting five and versatility is required by all three. Brandon Gorrin looks a favourite to be the back-up tackle although there are a lot of college free agents on the roster, and last year's back-upTyler Polumbus. Which leaves two spots available for Seth Olsen, Kory Lichtensteiger and Blake Schlueter. I am predicting that Schlueter will hit the Practise Squad - Barrett was a 7th round pick last year and cleared waivers, Greg Eslinger cleared waivers a few years back and made the practise squad - both point towards Schlueter being cut and resigned the next day.
Brandon Gorrin
Seth Olsen
Kory Lichtensteiger
The Surprise - The position of back up tackle to the Ryans is going to be one to watch. Gorrin looks favourite but there's a good chance any of the other contenders could win out. I expect Tyler Polumbus to push really hard and who knows, maybe he has enough to beat out Gorrin. Who knows, maybe Lichtensteiger won't even make the roster and Schlueter will be a back up.
The Special Team Players
Brett Kern, Matt Prater, Lonnie Paxton. What else is there to say?
Offensive Roster is complete
One of the things I like about the starting offensive line-up is that you can probably write it in your sleep.
Marshall, Royal, Hillis, Moreno, Orton
Graham, Harris, Kuper, Wiegmann, Hamilton, Clady
Hope you enjoyed this more indepth look at the offensive roster. Like I said, I am planning on having another roster break down after the first week of camp which will take on board all the reports from all the outlets along with any footage I can see and bring everything together into a final roster and depth chart. I'll also look at the trends over the offseason and see who was in and who is now out as well as who has come from nowhere and is now starting!

Sorry...
But I for one don’t think Marshall will be playing for the Broncos this season. He is recovering from major surgery (which hasn’t been looked at by team doctors) and has stated he wants to be traded. I see him being traded for a conditional draft pick and the drama ending.
Other than that I think you have listed a great representation of what the Offense will look like. I really think we are going to get younger at WR, we have some undrafted FA’s as well as McKinley (don’t know a lot about him but when Steve Spurrier says he is the best WR he has coached I believe in him). I really think Lloyd is filler and won’t end up making the team.
And one last thing I will take a WILD swing at is RB. I don’t think Lamont Jordan will make the team. He is old, can’t imagine he would play special teams and isn’t that great. He will provide leadership through the preseason but I don’t see carrying him on the active roster, that is assuming Darius and Torrain stay healthy.
There is no I in team.

I agree...
It’s hard for me to believe Brandon Marshall will be playing in a Broncos uniform this season. McD has already shown us he doesn’t cater to these type of players, therefore he should be traded soon. My only disagreement on the Marshall issue is he’s worth much more than a conditional pick. There are several teams who desperately need a receiver like him, and I truly believe some of those teams are already making a run at Marshall. Hopefully, McD will get a player in return (defense please!), because a draft pick would seem fruitless (unless it’s a first rounder). Also, I wasn’t surprised at the McKinley pick. When a great coach like Steve Spurrier says “this is the best WR I’ve coached”, then you must listen. He could be a future star in the making. And lastly, “believe me when I say” that Knowshon Moreno will be a Pro-Bowler almost immediately in this league. Why do I say this? Because he already has the talent, and now he’s playing behind one of the best offensive lines in football. Nuff said.

I disagree
I think Marshall is playing politics for a future contract. He has no leverage. He knows it but he is one of the best WR in the game and he wants Denver to acknowledge it. I believe he’ll be there from day one. The only scenerio that I see Marshall getting traded is if a team suffers injuries and because of it will overpay to get a reciever ala Seattle last year trading for Colbert. Then they will have to choose between Marshall, Edwards, and Boldin.

Disagree on 2 points
Marshall only goes somewhere if we get a steal of a deal for him. We hold the cards and he is recovering from an injury. Dude will eat pine before he gets traded for a conditional pick.
Jordan is going to make the team. He’s in great shape and is a bowling-ball RB. He provides perfect depth at the RB position for Hillis and can easily start a game here or there as needed. Old yes, but done no.
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

Great post!
Thanks for the outlook – the only thing I can really add is to keep an eye on punter Britton Colquitt, he may take Kern’s place…. That and I’d like to see Brandstater on the practice squad in order to free a roster spot for another talented defensive player we may end up needing.
Other than that it’s hard to argue with what you’ve laid out (besides of course, whether Marshall will be with us or not). Thanks again!
First team to three consecutive SB wins!!!! and then some, right? I think four and we oughtta let someone else have a fair shot : )

I agree with the OP
I don’t think Brandstater would clear waivers to make it to the practice squad. I doubt McD will take that chance and with him on the roster, it allows for 54 to suit up on game day.
But a lot will be determined by his play in camp and the preseason games.

Someone would pick him up off waivers just to mess with us. If everyone from NE assess players in the same way, it’d probably be KC. Once they sort their mess out at QB they’ll probably need a future / backup QB

Good points both, that I neglected to think about....
But still, don’t count Colquitt out.

If we're lucky...
….someone might give us a late round pick for Kern or Colquitt.

Looks solid.
On McKinley, I think he’s specifically expected to learn from Brandon Stokely this year with the hopes that he’ll develop into a slot specialist. That’s at least the theory I came up with when I reacted the same way as you to that particular pick.
I also think Buckhalter/Moreno will be in a rotation at RB with Hillis getting far less touches out of the RB position than anticipated by most. I see Hillis as more of a new aged H back…a sort of evolution of the concept. I think he’ll be in motion a lot.
I really like the way Buckhalter plays and I think his passion will earn him a big role…a bigger one than he had in Philly.

Re: Hillis
I agree he probably won’t get as many carries on the real field as he will my Madden team but I’m excited to see how he is used. I think you’re right about Buckhalter and Moreno carrying the football but I can’t wait to see how Coach McDaniels gets the ball to Peyton and what he can do when he gets it. According to the interviews he’s done Peyton expects to line up everywhere and how do defenses cover him?

WRs
I honestly think Lloyd just might not make the cut, it really depends. As far as your questions about McKinley, from what I’ve heard and seen… (you should check out broncobear’s post on the WR) as Stokley is aging McD and Co. might be looking to train him up as a replacement for the Pro Caliber slot receiver. Royal also fits this style so I think it will be interesting to see you ends up in that role once Stokley retires, though from the looks of it the guys still got a couple (if not a few) seasons left in him.

Some good competition
at the WR spot. McKinley, Grimes and Nate Swift were all very productive in college. Not sure if they will transition quickly to the NFL (often WRs struggle as rookies), but they should at least push guys like Jackson and Lloyd to compete everyday in practice. As tired as I am with the drama, I hope they can resolve the Marshall issue before camp (be it a trade or agreement to revisit his contract now or after the season). We need to focus on getting ready to play and need all the pieces in camp and focused.
Great Post and rec’d!

Of course.
This is my first big off-season with binoculars. I’ve never listened to whats going on behind the Bronco sideline, but with the Head Coach change I was curious. Now im submerged in anything and everything football.. ESPECIALLY Bronco football.
I’m even getting into the X’s and O’s of it all by reading the articles posted by HoosierTeacher and Yourself, and its gets me psyched for this surprising 2009 Bronco season. I can’t wait!

Still Good
This post is just as good as th defense post. Just that the offense is more stable and not quite as interesting as the D. I appreciate your work. Keep it up.
Its a Colquitt rule to practice punting before they exit the womb so don’t count him out as the punter. I also think there will be final roster trades that will be interesting.

Well I didn't know that about Colquitt
having seen his family tree, I have probably dismissed him a bit too soon

I wouldn't say the QB competition is over yet...
As you said, Orton is the front runner and would be the starter if the season started today, but if Simms comes out and outplays him in camp and preseason I would imagine McD will give him the job. It’s not like Orton has a Peyton Manning like lock on the job…if Jim Sorgi has a QB rating of 158.3 through 4 preseason games he’s going to be starting…ever.

I agree
I think naming Orton the starter was more to sort out procedures for training camp – who goes with the first team, etc. That’s important in the highly regimented atmosphere of training camp.
Still, I expect to see Orton the starter in Cincinnati.

I think Orton will be starting too...Simms just had/has too big of a hill to climb to win the job.

NIcely done on both of these!
Regarding Gaffney – Having watched the guy under-perform in Houston, I think he’s here for a year to help teach the offense, then gone. Big NE fans may have a different take as I didn’t really follow him with the Patriots. I agree that Jordan may very well not make it, but the RB position can so easily take an injury hit, that they may keep him as insurance. And McKinley should be learning the slot as Stokely is just one head shot away from retirement (unfortunately). And finally, unless Xanders gets an offer he can’t refuse, I think BM stays.
