Where/Who Did We Miss
Now that our draft has settled a little i thought it would be fun to take a look to see where we might have went wrong. I am not trying to be negative. I personally am a big fan of what we did. Even more so with the stradegy of McD and Xanders. I like that they have specific types of players for each position. Then on draft day target players that fit that specific role. Being realisitic, most likely one or more of our five picks in the first two rounds won't pan out, or reach the level we all hope they will now. So my question to all of you is which pick is it. Who did we miss out on?
Starting with our 12th pick I see 4 obvious alternatives to picking Knowshown. Four defensive players were drafted following our selection: Orakpo, Jenkins, Cushing, and English. Its possible that any of these players are pro-bowlers or better in a couple of years. Moving on our second pick at 18 I realy don't see many players at possitions of need for us. Maybe I'm missing somthing, but I doubt any of the players taken shortly after Ayers would have helped us any more. Pick 37 Alphonzo Smith will be looked out over and over. I see three players, Rey Rey, Brace, and Butler taken shortly after Smith who we might wish where in a Bronco uni in a year or two. Our second pick in the second round is the one I find most interesting. Shotly after we took McBath William Moore was taken. I could see that one maybe biting us in the ass. Also Moala was taken around the same time. He projected pretty well to a 5 technique.
There our many more example throughout the draft. So which pick do all of you wish we had gone different? What were the mistakes of our rookie staff? Just for the sake of it only please only players that were available when we picked. It is to hard to reasonable predict what trades could have happend. Anyways im curious to see what you guys come up with, and try to be strong during this hard hard time in our life that is the post-draft pre-traing camp chunk of the offseason.

I was really pulling for Maualuga
and I thought for sure they would take him at 18 or in the second round. He was ranked quite high on the draft boards for many teams.

Maualuga was very disappointed that he wasn't selectd in the first rd.
That was one that I couldn’t figure out either and if any of the gurus around here could enlighten me with the reason, then I’m all ears. The msm projected him in the lower middle to mid first rd.

i remember texting someone and talking about if he would fall to us
then we traded up and i about went ballistic thinking that we were getting knowshon, ayers, and maulauga.
then we got alphonso smith lol.
i think smith will pan out but I am worried that there just might have been better options there.

That was crazy, and very unexpected, but that's the way Mcdaniels and this group will operate.
Threat the msm like mushrooms…feed them crap and keep them in the dark. That is why IMO the msm is treating us like step children, they are jealous of the new regime, and hope this all fails. I don’t see this team failing, in fact I see things happening with our team that I haven’t seen in years..I am very excited for the season to start.

Yeah bfree
The problem is that they (MSM) can’t figure out McD’s angle, and he refuses to enlighten them. That they fail to be led by example and must recycle the same ol’ garbage is their downfall.

Two Down
From comment made by so called experts I got the impression Mauluga was a two down player and I got the impression from comments that were made by McD that he was looking for 3 down players. My assumption could be all wrong but thats my perception.

My thoughts on Mauluga was that he might be a larger version of Troy Palomalo.
That guy is all over the field.

Palomalu
Interesting! Palomalu is a SS while Mauluga played LB at USC. That is an intriguing possibility. Mauluga can sure put a hit on people!

That's why I was pulling for him.
Sure he is a MLB by trade, but it’s not crazy to think of him as a RILB or even potentially playing the outside a little bit. He’s got that intensity that creates havoc on the line. Though it doesn’t always work out, I see 3 or 4 times a game on third down where he will put just enough pressure on the line and pocket to make a QB throw a bad ball.

no offense but
we drafted smith # 37 and brace was # 40 if my research is correct. If we are still looking for answers at nt in a couple years and brace is doing the job in new england somebody made a mistake around here even if smith is good

Brace V Thomas
I thought Brace was one of the better NTs in the draft but when looking at his stats, Hgt/Wgt/Sd, I don’t think he had any greater potential at NT than Thomas. So why draft what you already have. IMO
by 3nS on Jul 12, 2009 1:50 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thomas
Marcus Thomas will not be NT. He is probably going to be our R-DT. Ronald Fields will be our NT in the 3-4 followed by Carlton Powell and, I’m hoping, Chris Baker can step up as a solid back-up. Brace has potential, but Ronald Fields has actually played the position and is probably a lock for NT. It is conceivable that on certain looks he may slide to ILDE with Thomas at IRDE. We really did not need to draft a NT. That was something the MSM completely failed to understand that we had already addressed through free agency. Peterson & McBean are good and probably better than Orakpo or English because of their experience.
Our biggest problem, IMO, was the secondary. Drafting Alphonso Smith, McBath and Bruton are great moves to establish some talented youth behind Andre Goodman (30 yo)/Champ (30) and Brian Dawkins (35)/Renaldo Hill (30).

Brace
what I should have said was Brace was one of the better DT. I think if Denver would have drafted him it would have been at DE. I also believe Thomas would be the DE of my choice but until I see it I won’t believe it.

I was pulling for
(like most broncomaniacs) Defense in the first round, I liked Maualuga, Cushing…. There were a few others, but I am pretty stoked with the picks we got!

Cushing
Cushing is getting rave reviews in Houston. He’s already being projected as a starter.
by Endzone on Jul 12, 2009 4:30 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm thinking
that Cushing will be successful with the Texans.

I was totally surprised with the first pick and to be honest thought McDaniels
had lost his mind, and possibly had gone off the deep end. After doing reseach on Moreno the reason was pretty clear, the smart thing to do was take the best available player at the time. The 4 you mentioned were not IMO better than Moreno, never will be, even if they all make the Pro Bowl. Moreno, barring any injury should be a defining factor on our offense for years to come. McDaniels/Nolan figure the players they have will be the defense the msm says we don’t have, and I believe they are correct. Besides, with all the changes this team has gone through this off season, we can’t expect miracles…can we??? Can we!!! 13-3 Baby!!!

For #12 I was totally happy.
I felt like Knowshon was actually the best option there. Orakpo will be a bust. I don’t think that Malcom Jenkins would have fit in well to the system and we didn’t need Defensive Backs as much as we did Front 7, English would have been one of the biggest reaches of the draft. The only guy of those 4 I liked was Cushing and I still would have rather of had Moreno.
IMO this is what our draft should have looked like with the players available at the time:
Knowshon Moreno
Robert Ayers
Rey Maualuga
William Moore
Jarron Gilbert
That would have been absolutely amazing.

Think Again
How many 1st year D-linemen make an impact teir rookie season ( try KC last year or us and Moss)?
Could the coaches have known that those on the roster had as much upside as any of the available rookies?
IMO we have to have faith in the coaching staff; they know more about the available players and how they will fit into the system the us on the outside of the building and that includes the MSM.

Malcom Jenkins
I loved the Moreno pick, but I would have been pumped about Jenkins, too. I think he’ll be a player (a star at FS), and he’ll put the most pressure on the Moreno pick when all is said and done. But I doubt that there’ll be any woulda-coulda-shoulda about Moreno.
Jenkins – Moreno – Smith would have been the dream first three for me, mostly because I have thought all along that the real problem with Shanny’s last team was ball control offense and the secondary. I couldn’t find a role for Cushing, Maualuga or any of the projected 5 techniques in my view of things predraft.
I’ve grown really excited about Ayers, too, though…so I can’t complain. But I have to admit that I wasn’t thrilled about that pick when it was made.
I don’t know enough about McBath (I liked Chung and Moore…Chung was gone) or Quinn (I saw the need, but not second round need) to have a meaningful opinion on either other than I like what I’ve read and I remain always optimistic.

Sammie Lee Hill
I still think that the best DL picks were the small college guys. Sammie Lee Hill was my choice followed by Pedescleu and Baker. So we got two of the three, but Hill, thankfully went to the NFC. I do wonder about Vaughn Martin in SD. His size and strength could make him a monster, but his weight may lead to injuries. Dunno. We’ll see. I just hope he isn’t this years Kendall Langford.

Why?
Redrafts are fun, but what have we learned since the draft took place? Let the kids play some games before we abuse hindsight. If someone’s pet prospect that we passed on blows up, then we’ll hear about it nonstop. I wonder how many people will volunteer this information when our picks pan out or the popular alternatives fail?
