Around SBN: Holy War Week Brings out the Worst in Fans

Where will we finish Offensively & Defensively and our final record.

I'm thinking that we still have one of the top offenses in the league, player wise. Even without Marshall, assuming he does in fact get his wish to leave granted, we still have a very scary first unit. We also now have a beast RB. We haven't had one for a while, and I think overall it has hurt us more than helped. Now we will have to see if they can put up the same kind of numbers (hopefully with a better redzone %) in a totally new system. It seems to me that Coach is going to play to the strength of his players, which is better than trying to fit a round peg in a square hole. I wasn't sure why Orton wasn't the full time starter for the Bears. He was clearly better than Grossman. He may not have quite the same zip on the ball that Cutler has, but in this offense I don't think that is going to be such a huge factor. I'm predicting a top 12 finish for the offense, and I think our redzone numbers will be much better this time around. Cutler's gunslinging days are over, and hopefully the combination of Moreno and Hillis can give us some added punch-you-in-the-mouth ability at the goal line.

The Defensive side of the ball is where it gets trickier. Based on what I've seen on our roster, I don't think we are that far away from a full transition to a full 3-4 alignment. As a team, we got hammered by the media for not addressing more of our needs on this side of the ball during the draft. I think they are wrong. Moreno is a special player. He seems to have the total package. Not to mention, next year is supposed to be one of the deepest drafts in a decade, so I keep seeing and hearing. If you look up and down our roster we have added a lot of size. I know that doesn't mean everything, but it is definitely going to mean something. Our D basically got shoved around in the second and third levels last year. I think our D-line holds the key. We have upgraded all three units, turning the LB's and Safeties from a weakness to a strength, IMO. We also now have a real field general in Dawkins, and I think that what he will bring to the table will be invaluable. Andra Davis is a huge addition for us in the middle. He has the strength and size to be a dominate force in the middle, and we all know what DJ is capable of. I'm curious to see how the OLB's will do this year. Most of them are transitioning to a new position, and no doubt some will excel and some will decline. I would like to think that Ayers and Doom will step up and become great, based on what I have seen from them already. There is a cast of characters behind them that could have make or break type seasons also. The D-line seems like it has improved. I'm not really sold on Fields, based on his career stats. I know stats aren't everything either, but he seems pretty pedestrian. The truth is, I'm not sold on any of them. Thomas would make a mean DE, and I'd love to see it. We just haven't, yet. I predict we finish in the top 18. I think the team knows it was embarrased last season and it wants some get-back. Especially now that is really is us vs. the world.

We have a brutal schedule this year. They say that what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. Like Boomer says, "that's why they play the games!" It is very menacing to look at, sure. This is a completely new team we are putting on the field, mostly. I'm sure Coach has added some wrinkles to his playbook. Nobody has film on this guy as a HC, and don't think he doesn't realize it. I'm sure he, more than anyone else, is motivated. If he can get the team to believe in him and what he's trying to do I think he will be the first successfull Belicheck assistant. After all, what did he really do. He came in, wanted to try to make the team better (by listening to trade offers) and Cutler basically threw a temper tantrum over it. I think Coach didn't want Cutler there in the first place, and he knew what he was doing. It's kind of harsh, but it worked. I also think that this trade could end up looking a lot like the Herchel Walker trade from many years ago. I'm sure Cutler will be a good QB for Chicago, but I thought then as I do now that we came out on the better end of that deal. With all that said, I predict we will contend for the AFC West and finish at 9-7. Oakland and KC should improve as well, but I think we are still better overall than both of them. SD will be the team to beat as they are also uber talented all the way around. What do you guys think?

nice article, rec'd

I think you have some good points.

I continue to find it amusing that the MSM continues to place such emphasis on how much stronger Cutler’s arm is than Orton’s. If you look at our first two games in 2008, Cutler threw 79 passes (according to sportsline.com’s play-by-play charts). 84% (66 passes) of those were considered to be in the "short"category, while only 16% (13 passes) were considered to be deep balls. I would tend to believe that accuracy would be the more valuable trait. But then, maybe that’s why I’m not a coach. :-D

And interstingly enough..

Orton was more accurate on the deep balls. Go figure. I tend to agree that this system will favor accuracy over arm strength.

Take my advice, I'm not using it !!!

We hear people say all the time that trade was about the draft picks and that Orton was just an add on.

But what if the whole time McDaniels had his eye on Orton and knew the days of Cutler were numbered and the 2 first rd picks were gimmes. It’s interesting how people project their views about the trade as if they know exactly what happened and why. As if to be portending the mind of our coach.

Yes it is

pretty evident that McJedi has pulled a league wide mind trick.

Just about every move McDaniels has made has been a calculated move,

From Nolan (Ronald Fields), Nunnely (Kenny Peterson), McCoy and Dennison (Klye Orton, Chris Simms and Moreno), Mike Priefer (Darrell Reid), Don Martindale (Robert Ayers and Andra Davis), Ed Donatell (Brian Dawkins, Andre’ Goodman, Renaldo Hill, Alphonso Smith), and the list goes on and on like the energizer bunny…

G2 from the FAs on this year's opposition?

Good players all but it doesn’t hurt that several are from this season’s opposition.

The real story the msm should be writing is, "McDaniels Takes the NFL by Storm".

They portray us as a defeated, deflated team with a bunch of scrubs. We’ll see if they are right or not pretty soon.

New Systems

I was once told and I don’t know how true it is that it took a QB 3 yrs. to learn and be comfortable with Shanahans offense. So how much more so a McD offense. Either way I’m sure there is a learning curve which is 1 reason McD listened to offers when it came to Cassel. I think its another reason why Cutler wanted out. Also the D will be a work in progress learning who is good and at what and how to play off one another

What this amounts to as regards your post is that the team will be better at the end of the year than it is at the beginning. In considering this I think the schedule is favorable, since Denver will be playing what seems to be lesser teams the first 3 weeks and much of their devisonal games comes in the second half of the season.

That all being sad I think both the offense and defense are better now than they were a year ago. So I’d say the O at about 6 and D at about 18. and a 9-7 record to win the division.

Second thought

It’s my understanding that after the decission to trade Cutler was made that McD evaluated all the QBs that could be a part of a trade and that Orton was the one that he wanted and was the best fit to the new offensive system.

Drafting Defense

The MSM completely ignored the complete housecleaning and free agents brought in during the offseason when the draft came around. They acted like the team had not done a thing to improve the defense. Ignoramuses!

The team is vastly improved in every area: coaching, offense, defense, ST’s. Shanahan is a great coach, but he began having too much to do other than coaching (GM, a new house, a steak house, public appearances, etc.). He delegated actual play-calling to Bates (offense) and Slowik (defense). It really is no wonder we were in such a mess. All of the new coaches, and of course Dennison and Turner, and will be a much needed improvement. My only coaching worry is Adam Gase, wide receivers coach since he spent the last three years with the Lions and last year with the 49’ers. That says a lot since I worried about more than half of the coaching staff last year.

I’m not quite at 13-3 but I predict 12-4. Our battles with SD will be great, but I believe our coaches will out-coach Norv and we’ll win the division.

I'm new

so I hope that you can put up with me. I’ve learned alot since I’ve been reading MHR and the post by the readers. I’d like to put my 2 cents worth in of the McDaniels/Cutler situation. I think McD saw somthing in the game last year about Cutler that he didn’t like or that he did’nt think he could change that Cutler was doing. I don’t believe that he was trying to get Cutler traded but I don’t think that it hurt is feelings either

by papasteven on Jul 12, 2009 6:01 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

This is pretty much how I read it as well.

I think McD could see the faults in Cutler’s game, and when he saw that Cutler was not going to put his nose to the grindstone, Cutler’s value within McD’s offense plummeted.

Obviously this is pure speculation on my part, but it is my speculation, and I’m stickin’ too it.

My Sporting News Season Preview mag has the Broncos finishing third in the division

BEHIND THE CHIEFS!!! What? A team that won 2 game last year and didn’t do much in FA or the draft is suddenly going to win more games than us. And Oakland, who won 7 games last year? That’s so ridiculous. All I can do is shake my head and visualize the collective stunned look on the MSM’s faces when we finish second again. Maybe first. Then there will be all these articles about how nobody saw this coming. Why didn’t anyone see this coming? All I will do at that point is say to myself, “Not everyone thought the Broncos would be bottom feeders. MHR ROCKS!”

I don’t know, man. The defense can only go up, really. Can’t it? And the offense, while maybe not as explosive, will likely score as much as last year, which adds up to .500 or better season to me. I guess now it depends on how McD handles a game. How does he handle the clock. Will he make good adjustments at the half, regardless of the score (winning/losing)? In my mind Shanny kind of stopped making half time adjustments, so anything there will be an improvement. And how many times did we waste a time out in the first drive of the half last year? The year before. I don’t have stats, but it seemed like a lot. I hope that McD has the team prepared enough to stop that nonsense.

And really how explosive was the offense? If you go by points, they were actually kind of shrug. 16th in scoring. That’s exactly league average. If they can do the same, maybe better with a healthy Hillis and Moreno and a game manager in the form of Orton, which I don’t think is stretch, and the defence performs better, like even 20th, I think we’ll stun some people.

Go Broncos!!!

You mentioned arm strength not being crucial.

I think that is absolutely true and something that is blown out of proportion. NFLN replayed the 1996 QB competition a few days ago and Steve Young could only throw it 60 yards…and he was surprised he even did that. Accuracy, a good system and a strong supporting cast are much more important that a rocket arm (and for the record I’m pretty sure Orton can easily throw it farther than 60 yards). The dude is an NFL QB, he can put zip on the ball when he needs to…it’s the decision making and accuracy that will make him successful and McD will work on his mechanics and have him prepared every week.

by TD4HOF on Jul 12, 2009 8:29 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

He was throwing 72 yards his senior year in high school

His issue is accuracy with some of the deep throws – but he’s very good on others. He mostly needs what he seems to be getting – coaching that’s above standard and a variation of scheme to match his strengths. And better receivers (we all know that the O line should continue to be great)

We will be improved...

on the defensive side of the ball. I can’t get behind the logic of the defense will be better because they can’t get worse. The fundamental flaw in that way of thinking is that those aren’t the only two possible outcomes. They could very well stay the same…Here’s why they won’t though. The defensive coaching staff that McD has put together is an upgrade at virtually every position. Great coaches make decent players good, good players great, and great players all pro. there is plenty of talent in the front

continuing on...

7. Marcus Thomas is a very athletic agile lineman, who was arguably our best DL last season. Fields is not all that impressive. Powell will be back this year, and he is supposed to be a run stopper. Baker may have been the steal of CFA, but time will tell. the talent is there, and McD brought in the right guys to draw out that potential. Nunnely has been one of the top DL coaches in the league for a long time. He will take our DL to a higher level, at least solid.

Baker

Was rated 3.98 on a 0-10 scale by Ourlads. (It’s a 7th round grade). Another undrafted FA DL was Iowa’s Mitch King, who was rated a 7.25 (3rd round grade) and was signed by the Titans.

As you say, time will tell…

Hmm..

Thomas, Powell, Baker. That would be an intriguing line up to watch. The thing I like the most about what we have is the versatility of all of them, and I do mean ALL of them. I can also see a 5-2 being used. I think it is obvious that Coach has a plan. The suspense is killing me.

Take my advice, I'm not using it !!!

Well.

I’m still saying 8-8, give or take a game. After training camp, I’ll put it all on the line with a concrete pick.

No book on 2009 Broncos

The biggest upgrade was the coaches. All were specifically picked. Coach Nunnely is the steal. Not only is he one of the top rated defensive line coaches BUT he is not with SD.
Posters above have it right, there is no book (film) on what the 2009 Broncos will do at any time. Surprise is now an asset. Hum something like Cutler, traded. Or like Tony Schaffler, now a key to an open offense. Or the draft, pick best player available to bolster the team.
Look at the schedule. Nice opening three to adjust to mistakes and learning but still win. Then Dallas and NE at home. Time to put Mile High back as an asset, 1-1. At San Diego before the bye will show us how we stack up. 4-2 at the break, nice.
Baltimore may have some sophmore type slump, or not. Pittsburgh, San Diego and Giants at home and can they continue the Mile High feeling. 2-1 or 1-2. OH beat Washington.
At Indy and Phil are tough with KC twice and Oakland could turn a 3-2 record.

7-10 wins this year. IMO SD has a tougher schedule. At Pittsburgh and Giants and Tennesse plus at Cleveland in December.

by DLMyers on Jul 13, 2009 11:58 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Baltimore will be 8-8 this year.

Their defense is good, but the offense will lack severely without Mason. He is 80% the reason WHY Joe Flacco had a great year last year. I can almost guarantee they go 8-8. Even if they pick up Marvin Harrison (which could very well happen), I still don’t see better than .500

My head always goes to the clouds

When trying to predict final records, before preseason even starts (or is done for that matter) – I’m thinkin’ 11-5, but can’t argue with the 13-3 crowd ; )

I would love if we went undefeated at home this year! Thanks for the thought/discussion provoker, g_c

First team to three consecutive SB wins!!!! and then some, right? I think four and we oughtta let someone else have a fair shot : )

7-9

8 and 8 at best. I love my Broncos but I’m going into this season with very little hope. Perhaps I will be surprised but right now I have very little faith on the team we will put on the field.

by LVElephant on Jul 13, 2009 2:44 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

11-5 at worse.

guaranteed. A guy like Dawkins can very easily change the game. After watching Philly’s royal beatdown of Dallas last night (44-6), I am extremely confident in Dawkins ability to create hell in the secondary for anyone that gets that far. That will easily give us a couple extra games.

Peyton Hillis is also referred to in early Greek mythology by his other names such as Zeus or Poseidon.

by Joe Medina on Jul 13, 2009 5:31 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, come on, LVEly,

Do you really think the team on either side of the ball or ST is worse or even the same as last year? Significant upgrades at coaching, much better secondary on the D and possibilities for the Dline, much more solid running game – with Moreno no less – and, not counting BM, only one significant loss in JC, which may take the fun (unless of course you have a heart problem) out of watching the game, but with better scheming, efficiency and second half adjustments definitely getting us more points on the board. You really don’t think we’ll be better than last year? or put a different way, do you really think the loss of JC will offset all of the additions to the team – BDawk, all the other FAs, the draft picks and the CFAs, plus the key house cleaning, addition by subtraction??

I, for one, just don’t see the reason for the pessimism – cheer up!! This has been one of the most interesting (and best) offseasons we’ve ever had!!! Go Broncos!!!!

My Thoughts

I have been lurking on this site for about 6 months after stumbling acrossed it. I have been a fan since the Broncos started and always went to their practices when they were at about 56th and Washington and it was convienient since my old HS was just down the street…Go Mapleton Falcons… Anyway just wanted to say I appreciate the fans on this site and their thoughts and your insights grind_core. I predict a 9-7 season depending on how our “demoralized and confused” (lol) Broncos can take on the new system and changes, I really think they will ambush some people and hopefully build some momentum. Will love it when they stuff the neysayers and critics!!!! =)

you clanmaster. I to am a Mapleton Falcon alumni. Class of 75. I don’t know about 13-3 or even 11-5. I think it will be 10-6 myself. I think we have significantly improved over last year if only in some of the coaching staff alone. I think they will be able to draw out the best in the players we have already here which IMHO will be an improvement in itself.
