Julius Peppers
Hello Bronco Country,
The offseason of boardom is winding down and we are weeks away from Training Camp and some recent news has caught my attention.
The Panthers and Julius Peppers did not reach a long term deal before the deadline. For some unfortunate reason when I get things stuck in my head they stick for a while. I have been thinking for years that Peppers is the type of stud on the DLine that would make us much more competative on the defensive side of the ball. It just seems to me that since Trevor Pryce left we haven't had domination up front. Here are some things to consider, tell me what I missed.
PRO'S - You aqcuire an All Pro DE with a ton of sacks his whole career. Provides an instant impact on the DLine and gives us flexability to create all types of match up problems with Ayers as both can play standing up or at the 5 Technique. Adds another veteran leader.
CON'S - He will be expensive, obviously his a new long term deal would be necessary and probably cap consuming. He is now in the prime of his career turning 29 in January so giving a guy a long term deal means he may start to show decline in just a few years into the deal. Has had some injury concerns but played healthy and very well last season.
What would it take to get Peppers in Denver, well there are a couple ways, draft picks or maybe dangle Brandon Marshall. Tell me Bronco fans, would you make a play for Julius Peppers?

I am so confused...
I thought Peppers already signed his tender with the Panthers.

I think by not signing him by the Wednesday deadline...
they have to wait till the end of the year before negotiating a new deal, so this may very well be his last year in Carolina.

I agree that Peppers would be an instant upgrade on the DL...
but I’d much rather spend that money mending the broken fences with BMarsh. The return on the investment would last much longer, in my humble opinion. If Brandon has made up his mind that he absolutely doesn’t want to be here, then yes, get what you can for the Beast.

I think Marshall has accepted that he is NOT getting his deal right now.
I’m sure his workouts with Fitzgerald, Cris Carter and Jerry Rice helped that a lot.

Here's the deal
Peppers DID sign his tender, and like donbok said, the deadline passed and the Panthers cannot sign him to a multi-year contract until the Super Bowl is over. They WERE negotiating but didn’t get it done.
As far as Peppers coming to the Broncos; he has told Carolina that there were only 4 teams that he would consider playing for, and no one else knows which 4 teams they are.
Sure, I wouldn’t mind having that kind of talent on our Defense, but the cost factor makes that a tough choice.
I am currently working on a post on the Franchise tag. I haven’t found out yet, but I’m wondering, if after the deadline, can Julius negotiate with other teams? If so, I know that the team that signed him would have to give the Panthers two 1st round draft picks as compensation for him.
That would be a heavy price tag for one player, don’t you think?

Yes, that's too heavy
I wouldn’t give up two 1’s for him…but for a talent like his and the difference he could make there might be some sort of package that would work via trade instead of waiting out the tag.
His one year tender at 16mil has to be appealing to unload if the right deal comes before camp…?
Looking forward to your franchise post!

Similarly to Matt Cassel
I think that Carolina couldn’t negotiate with other teams until Peppers signed his tender. Since he has, Carolina can trade him for whatever. Cassel was franchised, then traded, along with Vrabel, for a 2nd round pick – not two 1s. Of course, Carolina won’t part with Peppers for a second round pick of course, but with Mussin Muhammed getting older, Carolina is in need for a replacement to play across from Steve Smith. I don’t think that Marshall should be traded, but it could make sense for both teams.

Cost
Also similarly to Cassel, the Broncos can, and probably would, negotiate a contract extension with Peppers. The yearly cost would be a lot lower than $16 mil. It would cost more in guaranteed money, but over the course of 5-6 years. As such, he wouldn’t be that expensive, value-wise.

only if they sign him away
The franchise and transition tags make it prohibitively expensive to sign a player away, but that wouldn’t be how we would obtain him — if we did. Nobody pays that kind of price for a player anymore, except for in very unusual circumstances. If Carolina decides to trade him — which they’ve been reluctant to do – then there’s chance, but they might still ask for a lot in return, so it’s still iffy.
The could simply tag him again next year, so he’s either going to make lots of money or finally get traded to another team. Also — he did say he wanted to play for a 3-4 team, and I thought he mentioned us by name — but perhaps not.

also
Peppers can negotiate with other teams because he’s a Non-Exclusive Franchise tagged player.
A “non-exclusive” franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player’s position in the previous year, or 120 percent of the player’s previous year’s salary, whichever is greater. A non-exclusive franchise player may negotiate with other NFL teams, but if he signs an offer sheet from another team, the original team has a right to match the terms of that offer, or if it does not match the offer and thus loses the player, is entitled to receive two first-round draft picks as compensation. Wikipedia
Carolina could simply match his offer or let him go for the two 1st round picks. I don’t know that any team will view him as worth both the astronomical salary (it would take more than the already high number they’re paying as a franchised player) and the 2 first round picks. I just can’t see him being worth that much even though I like him a lot. That’s why we don’t see franchised players being signed away anymore.
(note: Teams can always keep the franchised player by matching the offer but it’s in the team’s interest to let the player go. I say “signed away” to indicate making an offer, but it’s not binding.)

There's always a gamble there though.
By accepting 2 first round picks for one guy, you’re basically assuming the responsibility of having 4 very expensive players that may or may not be worth it. In that sense, I think Carolina would rather trade him away for something smaller. They could always do what we did this year and trade away one of their first rounders for something else, but there’s just too many variables in that situation.
If I were Carolina, I’d tag him, and if anyone shows interest then negotiate. I wouldn’t accept 2 first rounders though. I’d rather pay a lot for ONE guy that I know is proven than pay a lot more to 4 guys that may not work out.

There is also
the fact, that, a team can only Franchise a player for 3 consecutive years.

You don't know
How delighted that makes me Colinski. I learn a great deal from you, just about every time you post. So thank YOU.

Do we wait on Moss since he is a 1st rd pick and needs to show his worth?

Didn't hear Moss' name much in OTA's...
hope he comes on strong in the new scheme. He at least deserves his shot.

I'll be rooting for him after the injuries he has endured and I guess he had a 'hip virus'?
Whatever that was. But he needs to show this year or maybe it over.

he had a staph infection
in his pelvis. He basically woke up one day and was paralyzed. He siad it was like a huge weight was on his chest and he couldn’t move. After a while he got feeling back and immediately talked to his coach and then doctors who got him on the fast track for antibiotics and treatment. He lost almost 100lbs while dealing with the infection, missed significant time, and yet still returned in his junior season to lead Florida’s defense ona BCS rampage (though he deferred the ‘best defensive player’ compliment to our own Marcus Thomas, who got suspended and missed the actual championship game itself).
So Denver drafts him, and in all the pictures of him he has a highly developed upper body and toothpicks for legs (though he gained back almost 70 lbs). Lo and behold, his leg snaps in practice in a freak injury where he planted his foot, with his lower body going one way and his upper body going the other way on an end around move.
To me, last year was year one, and I can only hope that the medical staff is cognizant of his physical needs as he continues to rehab from a devestating infection and its after effects. No rush on Moss is best, but finances will push him to beat the odds or be gone.
Which is unfortunate. There is very real talent there.

I really think we should
Considering the Coaching/Scheme change. But hey, I’m an optimist.
