I just recently had surgery to reattach my bicep tendon(similar to Favre) and was fortunate enough to catch the America' s Game marathon on NFLN. IMHO these episodes are great television no matter the team they highlight.. I was watching the 72' and 73' Dolphins and I was struck with a few similarities to the 09' Broncos. Before anyone starts laughing, just hear me out.
First, the Dolphins believed in the team and winning as a team. They had HOF players on the team, but their personal achievements were nothing if the the team failed. Isn't this the same attitude tah McDaniels has brought with him? It's not about the individual, its about coming together and winning as a team.
Second, the Dolphins had a great power running game with Czonka, Kick and Morris. They all knew their role on the team and accepted it knowing that it was best for the team. Doesn't that sound like Hillis, Moerno, Buckhalter and Jordan? All accepting their role for the benefit of the team.
Third, the Dolphins had equally unselfish quarterbacks in Griese and Morell. Neither put up great numbers, but they were effecient and accurate when called upon. All indications are that Orton and Simms are going to be great game managers and stay within the McDaniels scheme, because it's best for the team.
Fourth, the Dolphins had a great offensive line that opened the holes for the running backs and protected the quarterbacks with equal vigor. No matter how little love we get from the MSM, our offensive line is one of the best in the league and this year we've added depth.
Finally, what about the defenses? The 72' and73' Dolphins had a defense that was full of 'no names'. Again, it wasn't about individual achievement it was about helping the team. The Broncos have a few recognizable names but on the whole they're a unit that is lacking the respect of both the NFL and the MSM. If they can "just do their own jobs" as B. Dawkins has said, then they too can come together and win as a unit and as a team.
I'm not saying that were going to go undefeated, we'll win the Super Bowl, or that we're as good as the 72' or 73' Dolphins. What I am saying is that McDaniels has brought a new attitude to Denver. A team first mentality that has a history of winning in the NFL. I for one am excited for the upcoming training camp and the 2009 Bronco season. I think we have alot to look forward to. Thank you to all the members of MHR for all the great information and positive comments. This is truly an oasis in a sea of ignorance.
