Horse Tracks 7/18/09 - Great to hear from Shanny, Elway; Alphonso honed his skills chasing wabbits

CBS4 - Shanahan Breaks His Silence
As Guru posted last night, Reggie Rivers spoke with Shanny about his time off, Josh McDaniels and Jay Cutler. Honestly, the guy looks 10 years younger already now that he's (presumably) getting some actual sleep. Personally, I'll be rooting for Shanny wherever he goes (unless it's within the division).
CBS4 - Reggie speaks with Shanny, Vic with John Elway - Video
Here is video of Reggie's interview with Mike Shanahan. Immediately following that clip is Vic Lombardi speaking with Elway from the celebrity golf tourney in Tahoe; John immediately refers to Cutler as "the most recent former QB" rather than by name. Later, John reminds everyone to wait a couple of years before truly judging the Cutler trade. He also says he never spoke to Pat Bowlen about a job with the Broncos.
DB - Chasing Pro Dreams
Alphonso Smith is just the latest of nearly three dozen NFL players from Belle Glade, FL. In fact, Smith grew up three houses down from Anquan Boldin. The common link? Chasing rabbits through sugarcane fields may have honed their quickness and agility.
DP - Kiszla: Coach Kid had to win standoff
Kiszla thinks McDaniels has earned himself a lot of respect for showing it's all about team, specifically with his handling of the Brandon Marshall situation. Personally, I think it's a bit early to declare victory in that one; Marshall may say he's going to be at camp, but I'll believe it when I see it, quite frankly.
KDZA - Mike Shanahan talks to Denver radio station
Shanny also spoke with KDZA-FM radio on Friday. Here's the audio.
NFL - Shanahan wants another head-coaching job, possibly as soon as 2010
Steve Wyche's take on the Shanny interview.
ACC - Celebrity Golf Championship
John Elway is tied for 10th using the Modified Stableford scoring system, while Steve Beuerlein is tied for 58th, John Lynch is tied for 61st, Shanny is tied for 69th, while Jay Cutler is nowhere to be found. Maybe he didn't show up.
NFL - Innovative, memorable coaches made their mark in AFL
Some of the AFL's greatest coaches, including Lou Saban.
NFP - Points to consider in Cassel deal - Jack Bechta
SI - Kansas City Chiefs made mistake with Matt Cassel contract - Ross Tucker
Tucker incorrectly focuses on the total value of Cassel's deal in evaluating it. Look, in the NFL it's only about the guarantee. He also explains why he's down on Cutler.
NFP - NFP late hits: Bears might be sleepers - Matt Bowen
Bowen thinks BMarsh needs to just show up to camp and start playing football.
NFL - Feds charge convicted felon who sold gun later used to kill ex-QB McNair
PFW - NFC North training-camp previews
NFP - Diner morning news: The final three
Getting serious again, Lombardi thinks Shanny will be coaching the 'Skins in a year's time.
Y! - Former NFLer, ex-con has frank advice for Vick
Mike Silver looks back at Bam Morris' story when considering Michael Vick's future. He also predicts the BMarsh story will get ugly again before the season. Yeah, probably....
ESPN - The Washington Redskins hope they beat the supplemental draft odds in their selection of Jeremy Jarmon
Agent Mouthpiece Extraordinaire Len Pasquarelli looks around the league.
FOX - NFL questions as we endure dog days of summer - Kevin Hench
CBS - Favre turns everybody off ... and keeps everybody watching - Ray Ratto
NYT - No Excuses for the Jaguars - The Fifth Down Blog - KC Joyner
NFP - Bubba Franks: end of a nice career - Andrew Brandt
NFLN - NFL Videos: A game of sacrifice
Big hits and playing through injuries...
NFLN - NFL Videos: Best players
Dukes & Wilcots share their final (thank goodness) installment of "Best in the Biz" this time each talking about their best 5 players in the NFL. For once, they both come up with some respectable lists. But still, it is very hard to listen to them shouting into their microphones...

HOLY CRAP I LOVE JOHN ELWAY!
Oh man, I knew I loved the guy before. But to not even refer to Cutler by name really shows he’s a true blue Bronco. He’s so cool man. I wanna be like John. :)

Elway is up to speed on KO
I tip my cap to John Elway – “he’s not there yet, but who knows maybe Kyle Orton can become a franchise QB. He did a decent job in Chicago. He has better weapons to work with in Denver. The offense should be fine. It will take up to two years to evaluate the trade”. Sounded to me like Elway has done a little homework on KO. It is so important for the great Elway to get behind the team and Orton in particular.

Elway should roll into Dove Valley in August

Awesome NYC...
Elway and Shanny are both stand up guys.
I wish Shanny all the success in the world no matter where he lands.
Those that cant coach, compete!
Failing to plan is planning to fail.
All I want is 53 Rod Smiths. Is that asking too much????

Unless its the Chargers!!!
WTF was that comment about, Rivers!!? LOL
Great to see he’s taking the time to talk to other coaches, watch other teams, and freshen his strategies. I’m rooting for him as well to be a renewed force in the NFL next year!!

he'll coach Dallas next year...
wouldn’t be the first time he ran Wade Phillips out of a job.

we'll see if he can handle Jerry Jones being the ultimate controlling husband
in that relationship. I want to say he’ll be ok with it, but my gut tells me that will be the only inhibitor for him going to Dallas.

That is what will be interesting to see.
Will Shanny be happy to be just a HC or will he want more than that like he had here in Denver. I mean he won’t get that in Dallas, so next offseason should be fun to watch.

That's the one point
that will give Chicago a bona fide shot at him.
But I could also see him someplace crazy, like Washington or Seattle.

I think Mora will be in Seattle for a while...
he goes way back with the franchise, and if they dump him after one year they are going to seem very Al Davis-esque.
I think Jim Zorn is in a tough spot right now. He certainly has a lot of talent on both sides of the ball, now getting it done with that talent is a different story. We’ll see my friends.

Could be the Bears
Reunited with JC after a 10-6 2009. Lovie will be gone if Bears don’t go 11-5 or better and deep into postseason.

I definitely see the Bears taking a run at him
but Shanny loves him some Romo.

That is the best column that Kiszla has written in a long, long time. It is awesome.
By the way, in case anyone hasn’t seen the FanShot, Jeff Legwold is joining the Broncos beat for the Post this season.
