Klis looks at the remade Broncos backfield, sharing quotes with all four veterans about their expectations for 2009.
DP - Klis: Marshall's options: big play or less pay
Klis points out that Brandon Marshall may not put up the big numbers (TDs, YPR) that command big dollars. Plus, Bubby is holding a football camp soon.
ESPN - Former All-Pro safety John Lynch says "buyer beware" for teams pursuing Brandon Marshall
John Lynch doesn't expect Denver to show BMarsh the money; he thinks all of Marshall's arrests mean the Broncos can't trust him yet. He also thinks Jay Cutler has a lot of growing up to do, although he says Denver shouldn't have traded him.
DP - Kiszla: Grab a chance to grade Coach McD
Kiszla is offering up the "opportunity" to sit through the Broncos' home opener by his side in the stands. He also considers whether the offseason of change will damage Denver ticket sales. Of course, there's the small factor of the economy...

Thanks Nyc
The Phonz article was good.

I like how Kiszla
tries to indicate that the number of unsold tickets has to do with lack of faith in Mcdaniels… As if they weren’t a ton of usold tickets halfway through the season last year! :)
Subjectivism run amok, and this offseason has really stripped away any pretense otherwise. That is what high levels of stress will do…
There is no army so powerful as an idea whose time has come.

Why did I ruin the effect of reading Klis' piece
on the Broncos improved secondary in the DP by reading the asinine comments that follow it? Someone tell me why? Dear God… Please don’t let me do that again.
Anyway — thanks for the links as always. Some good reading here today.

Thanks dashiell
That’s a nice safety tip, everyone. Avoid the comments….

I second that motion
Reading the comments after any article on the DP is like looking directly at a nuclear explosion. I felt my eyes start to melt, my hair catching fire, and my skin boiling. I saved myself by turning off my computer immediately.
And came to MHR for recovery. Thanks guys, you saved my eyeballs.
No inspirational quote here, just this...GO BRONCOS!!!

Eyes closed with fingers in ears. La la la la.
This really shouldn’t come as a shock, but not everyone in Bronco Nation is as happy with The Coach as the majority of readers/posters of this website.
And many of those DP posters are going to be at Investco for the home games.

Many of those DP posters
can eat it after Denver beats teams like Dallas and New England at home too.
Peyton Hillis is also referred to in early Greek mythology by his other names such as Zeus or Poseidon.

It's not a shock
and it’s not a problem. Winning cures all ails and losing makes them worse. What bugs me about the DP commenters (a lot, not all) is the ones who seem irrationally angry about everything beyond any reason or fairness. There’s people there who write as if Pat Bowlen or McDaniels or whoever raped their cat instead of looking at things through rational eyes. It’s fine if they want to criticize or express concern, there are plenty of reasons to do either, but a) do it fairly and b) stop posting the same exact things over and over again, ad infinitum.
some of those people seriously need to take a break from thinking about sports, get some fresh air, take up a new hobby, spend more time with their kids, take prozac, get a new job, whatever it takes for them to not be such angry, shallow people.
That’s all, that’s why I can’t read the comments there anymore.

Alphonso Smith
As a U of Miami and ACC guy, I got to watch a lot of Alphonso Smith the last few years.
What struck me about the kid was his ability to keep his eye on the QB and WR at all times. A lot of CBs focus on the WR they cover and occasionally get a PI call because they can’t see the ball and haphazardly run into the receiver before the ball arrives. Not Smith.
It helps that Smith has quick feet, but the guy was clearly a cerebral player (much to his advantage). As much as I don’t like Wake, Smith was fun to watch and I won’t miss him on Saturdays.

I won't miss him Saturdays either, but we will watch him on Sundays...
His play ought to be something to watch. 43 days until Chicago’s in the house.

Possibly the best Paige column in ages
Thoroughly enjoyable, even melancholy, sans the trademark hubris.
