Scheffler Intro, BMarsh Outro

Funny how this has played out...A few months back we were worried Scheffler would be on his way outta town on the "Bus" express...BMarsh was a vocal supporter of the new McD regime, even regulating his boy Cutler publicly.

As the world turns...here we are now; Scheffler has been gaining praise through mini-camp and OTA's...BMarsh has been dealin with a hip injury (unknown variable in situation), off-field issues (domestic assault allegations permenantly stain reputations) and now this contract dispute and trade request...anyways...

This is what I'm thinking...with our depth at WR (Royal, Gaffney, Stokely, Mckinney, Jackson, Lloyd), TE's (Graham, Scheffler, Quinn, Putzier) and receiving RB's (Hillis, Moreno, Buckhalter)...we can probably afford to let Marshall, sit, sulk, be salty and whatever...

Furthermore, we may have his replacement on roster already...why can't Scheffler be that big body receiving threat? He's too big for DB's, and too fast for LB's, runs routes well, is intelligent, and has soft hands. Granted, injuries have been an issue...but this makes sense. Scheffler can line up at TE, spread wide, block for runners and  be effective in the RedZone. This also helps explain the Quinn draft pick, and the Putzier re-sign.

The way I see it, Marshall can get as comfy as he likes, there might not be enough balls to go around anyway...and I almost forgot...I heard we might run the ball this year too...shhh, keep it on the low...I know, craziness...

Lack Of Pace

I believe that Scheffler does not have the same speed as any legitimate WR.
But his combine 40 yds dash time of 4.54 looks quite respectable compared to :

Brandon Marshall 4.52
Reggie Wayne 4.45
Anqun Boldin 4.72
Kenny McKinley 4.44

However, all of the above were considered shockingly slow at the time. Last years times for a selected few were:

DeSean Jackson 4:35
Eddie Royal 4.39
Donnie Avery 4.40

But I’m sure people can come up with slower times for other receivers, but in my opinion the 3 above were the best of the rookie WRs last year.

I agree that with the talent on the roster and the change in the offensive system will make an out and out number 1 receiver less of an issue than last year. Also I believ that BM would still post monster figures if he got on board, because all you have to do is look at Randy Moss’s production at NE since he joined them.

I wonder about the Randy Moss Comparisons,

I don’t see BM getting anywhere at the pace Moss does. What I would expect to see is BM moved to #2, or at least to play the role the #2 played in NE. Royal is the guy who can stretch the field vertically.

agreed

however, from BMarsh’s side of negotiations…he has to have a position, and if he doesn’t get $$$ or a trade he wil _________…either a) not play b)not play wholeheartedly c)play like as he should
So from the Bronco’s side of negotiations; they’re willing to not trade him and deal with his response because they feel they have adequate depth and options.
I agree that Bmarsh would put up numbers in the system, but if he doesn’t want to, there are those who willing.

you already know.

by justwhytee on Jul 2, 2009 2:08 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

just thinking this out loud

if he a) didn’t play then I believe he’d leave 2.2 million on the table. If your looking for more money and I believe thats more then he’s made in his life combined this is a strange strategy.
b) not play wholeheartedly
If he doesn’t play he won’t get paid by another team. This works in the NBA (see v. Carter and B. Davis) but not in the not all guareenteed $ NFL. His off the field issues are scary, show he only plays when he feels like it and his $ per year would only go further down IMHO.
C) play like he should – Broncos get him for 2 years very cheaply, assuming the CBA expires as expected. If he puts up 80+ catches and 1000 yards as a poor mans Moss in the Offense then his value goes up. If Goodall doesn’t suspend him for further games and court blows over, his value goes up. Suddenly he can take his bad attitude to another team via trade and Denver should be able to get trade value for him (not R. Williams good because of future looming suspension I’m afraid to say) So maybe 2 second rounders, or a first rounder only? Who knows.

Just me speculating as I have yet to sit in a player vs team vs trade professional office situation.

Scheffler is

certainly a big body receiver and his presence allows the offense to run a lot of different looks, with or without Marshall. I don’t see him as a WR it just isn’t where his value is. He does add a lot in the Red Zone with his big body and great hands. If Marshall sits I think we will see Gaffney or Lloyd in that slot, possibly Jackson. I like Royal remaining where he is and Stokley and McKinney sharing the slot.

Good underlying point

While watching the Pats for the Divining series on of the things that came up was the number of times that they used a 4 (or 5) wide-out spread – but one was a RB, one a TE. Labels aren’t always terribly important in this system – production was. I was always perplexed with the willingness of fans to mark Scheffler as put-paid and our of town on the basis of a single rumor. He’s a delight for McDaniels – big, strong, fast (let’s fact it – 4.5 straight-line speed is adequate for production – McKinley and Royal are truly fast), good hands and willing. His blocking has come a long way. He’s incredibly versatile – no matter what you call his function, he can catch, block and move with and without the ball. I suspect that we’ll see plenty of him

As far as the second point, that Marshall should consider the number of weapons that Denver has that DO want to play for them: most children will toe the line after they find out that tantrums don’t work. We’ll see – but I’ve been on record as feeling that while it’s in Marshall’s best interest to play, the Broncos will be very good without him.

On your second point broncobear...

That could be another reason Marshall wants out, from what I can tell anyway… Maybe he doesn’t like the idea of so much competition, seemingly like another recent departure… (?)

Excellent points both, though.

First team to three consecutive SB wins!!!! and then some, right? I think four and we oughtta let someone else have a fair shot : )

What If............................

Marshall comes in and doesn’t play like we all know he can, the cba gets reworked. Shanny goes to Dallas, and gives us a first and second for Brandon. I know it is a stretch, but what if?

I'd say

Give us DeMarcus Ware and I’ll throw in a 2nd rounder WITH Marshall.

Nice post....

one of my frustrations last year was that we did not exploit the matchup problems that Scheffler creates well enough. When he is in the game in a 2WR/2TE/1RB set he creates a dilemma for defenses. If they play run we can split him wide and force a mismatch there. If they go nickel we line up in a 2-TE set and pound it down their throat.

Sheffler is in a league of his own – a TE with YPR numbers that rival WRs.

Since Scheffler has come around

I think McDaniels has found his new favorite toy in the passing game. He’s already spoken quite highly of his ability to catch and his presence makes a dilemma for secondaries all around. I love that he’s decided to stick around and I bet McD will exploit that all year long.

Good post!

I like the idea of having so many versatile players… I am confident, with or without Marshall, we will have a stellar season. Especially considering having a new (let alone rookie) head coach. Albeit one I couldn’t be more excited about.

The only variables left, are not only the players ‘gelling’ (<— that sure doesn’t look right, but it sure looks better than ‘jelling’, or does it?), but all the new staff cohesively gelling with players and eachother alike. Everything else is there from what I’ve seen. Attitude, talent, experience (even if shared wisdom), (obviously) scheme, and no matter who the new people are, the MILE HIGH SPIRIT enters when you become a Bronco!

It’s funny when players that I come to know as ‘Our’ players end up with another team (see Trevor Pryce, Steve Atwater, etc, and oh yes, Jay – he is entertaining to watch) it just gives me an excuse to be interested in watching more football = )

Thanks for the idea, I do tend to see it as less of a titled psition, more like, blocker/receiver in general, not TE’s or WR’s, just backs and receivers anymore.

In all fairness

I’ve posted this before – but I think that Marshall is using the only potential bargaining chip he has at this point. We may call it immature, but he doesn’t have a lot else and he’s entering a very risky period for him and his career. Remember, Denver truly holds all of the cards and BM’s potential for falling in value/salary over the next couple of years, (whether due to hip, future injuries, off-field issues or declining production under the new system), is very real. If this ploy worked, it’s a god-send for BM. At worst, he goes back to work and nothing is lost, (especially if he is moderately successful).

So I’m not so eager to rag on the guy just yet. The “hate Denver” stuff – hey, I think I once said I hated my kids, but believe me, I couldn’t live without ‘em. That kind of stuff happens at the perfect storm point of bad timing, frustration, etc. It’s just that most of us don’t have full national media scrutiny on us the minute we say or do something stupid. I think we’ll see more growth on the off-field side as time goes on.

Even if BM is not the best WR in the NFL, or top 5 or even top 10, I think he’s a great addition to our offense, and just as with JC, if we can keep him I think we’re better. If we can’t keep him, McD has other tools and is smart enough to get around it. I say let him cool his heels a bit and he’ll come around. I think the off-field will get better over time. I am hoping that his hand nerve damage is improving and he will improve in the “drops” category.

Frankly, my biggest worry about BM, above and beyond anything else, is the effect of his hip surgery. On that I am holding my breath. The other stuff, at this point, whatever…..
