Well I'll Be Damned
There are times when I get so irritated when I read in the MSM, and on other fan sites, how the wheels have come off the Broncos, how the we can't expect anything good, how dismal the outlook is, that I swear that I will never again read anything other than the posts at MHR. Then I remembered this story.
With gleeful abandon, the boy ignored the advice of the minister and shoved his wagon over the edge. Hanging on for dear life, the boy bounced and jolted his way down the hill at a breakneck pace. And, sure enough, just before the bottom of the hill, he struck a tree. The boy was unhurt but the wheels popped off his wagon. The boy immediately began screamed, "I'll be damned."
The minister was so touched by the child's distraught look, and distress that he helped the boy reassemble the wagon. During the process the minister admonished the child, "You should have known that this would happen. And swearing at the wagon and the tree will do you no good. The only wise thing to do is praise God, and not do such a risky and nonsensical thing."
The boy thanked the minister for his conventional wisdom, and the minister stood with pride over his success in bringing the boy around to the "right" way of thinking. The minister watched in amazement as the boy once again dragged his wagon to the top of the hill, climbed aboard and hurtled down the hill. Once again, the boy struck a tree at the bottom and the wheels flew off. As the minister opened his mouth to say "I told you so," the boy exclaimed "God be praised."
The minister watched in amazement as all four wheels suddenly rose up in the air and reattached themselves to the wagon. The boy smiled when he heard the minister exclaim, "I'll be damned."
IMHO there will be a lot of people exclaiming "Well, I'll be damned!" at the end of the 2009 season when they see what the McDaniels-led Broncos are able to accomplish.

The MSM are asolutely right!
The Denver Broncos has run the wheels right off of this once honorable team.
The owner fired an emotionally bent and frustrated head coach who had way too much power, and was overwhelmed with responsibilities.
He hired a young, thinks he knows it all who was supposed to fix a fledgling defense and leave a great offense alone.
We replaced a pair of safeties with a couple of old broken down has beens, who will be player in wheel chairs by the end of the season.
We didn’t address the defensive front seven whatsoever, only made things worse by acquiring Fields, Parker, Baker, Pedescleau, Davis, and Reid to accommadate the already DJ, WW, Spencer, Moss, Crowder, and Dumervil. Oh yeah, and don’t forget we drafted Ayers in the first rd, but he doesn’t count, he only started to produce in his last year or so of college.
We didn’t get the Champ back to health and pick up a Goodman on the other side of the wings to fit in a better defensive scheme. Nah, we didn’t do anything to improve our impoverished defense.
We traded our franchise QB, boy what a misstake that was, and it will come back to haunt the Broncos, this guy Orton has no real scrambling skills like our other QB and the OLine will probably get tired of protecting him.
We drafted a gifted RB first when we should of addressed the DLine, it won’t help to go from 16th in the league in points to say maybe 10th or 9th. Because we could score 30 points a game and still lose by one won’t make us any better.
We got a QB who is thrilled to be in a new system and be a part of a growing team and the weapons he has. He’ll probably get tired of not getting sacked so much that he’ll just run head first into the defensive line.
We are in deep trouble with Hillis and Moreno in the backfield, they won’t make a large impact on the team running over people.
And those TE’s we have, well, they aren’t much better, they are sure to fail in the new system and scheme.
I really don’t know what Pat Bowlen was thinking, he has dismantled this wonderful team we had, and detroyed it. 3-13 Baby!!! What is wrong with you Pat? You crazy?

OMG
This is totally classic humor.
I totally love it. Your sense of humor is a wonderful addition (along with all the analysis you have shared).
Your humorous writing deserves a place in MHR’s Orange and Blue Collar Comedy Tour (I wonder if we could convince Guru to add that as a category?) LOL

Thanks for putting a smile on my face after a tough morning.
Everyone seems to forget that even the best quarterback looks lame when being overwhelmed by the pass rush. Orton is going to love being able to check down and find the open man after the Bears O-line experience.

And lets not forget about that so-so offensive line we have that will be anchored by that left tackle who allowed a whopping 1/2 sack his rookie year. Hillis, Moreno and Buck are gonna have a freaken field day.

Good stuff
It is going to be priceless to see how many ‘experts’ are going to be either honestly stating how they obviously missed a lot (these will be few, but I can still see a shade of character here and there with a few of them), or acting like they ‘knew it all along’ and basically lying, as many reporters and journalists unkowingly do, due to misinformation seems to be almost a common practice in the MSM nowadays.
Rec’d for the sunnysided-ness! Thanks!

We may not win the Super Bowl
We may not be in the AFC Championship, we may not even win the AFC West.
But I know we will be much better and more competitive and we have team leaders now that will not stand for laying eggs at home or away.
No, we may not win any of those titles……..but I know we are much closer now than we have been in quite a few years.
The culture is changing and now…..good enough isn’t quite good enough anymore AGAIN!
Thank you Mr. Bowlen, Mr. McDaniels and Mr. Xanders, the Denver Post mocks you, their readers call you names, the MSM swears will be a joke, but those of us here at the Mile High Report see the plan and we thank you!

I do think Mr. Bowlen’s football lovelight (Grateful Dead typa lovelight eh) has flared again… Kinda like implementing the new uni’s and we all know what soon followed there….
If Pat Bowlen offered me a job, face to face, even if it was from ‘water boy’ to ‘scrubbin toilets’ for the Broncos, I’d take it, because I believe Mr. Shannahan was sincere in his statement that “This (the Denver Broncos) is the best organization in sports.” Although I would hope the salary would allow ample living and season tix lol!

you know...
the idea of new uniforms doesn’t seem all that far off to me. Pat Bowlen is a fellow that seems to really like new shiny things. I mean, we went to new uni’s in 97, new stadium is 01, we’re overdue for a cool change, or maybe a cool nod to what used to be?

This is how a Bronco fan acts
Originally I hoped Shanahan would be given a couple more years, I thought he had turned a corner and had earned the chance to turn a 500 team around. Nobody wanted it to happen more then he did.
Originally during the interview stage I hoped Ryan would get the job and Bates and others would be retained to keep the offense about the same.
Originally I hoped the Broncos would hang tough with Jay Cutler and eventually he would come in and get won over by McDaniels and the new system and would have a great year.
Going into the draft I hoped they would go defense, defense, defense and then more defense.
Nothing that I thought should be done was done at any given stage this off season.
So how do I feel now?
Do I want the team to have a bad year and McDaniels gone?
No No and No
I’m optimistic; I love my Broncos; I want McDaniels to have an incredible year; I want our defense to shock the MSM. I want Moreno and Ayers to be rookies of the year. I want a top 5 offense in scoring. I want 3 tight end sets that are the talk of the country. I want a dozen other great things to happen to the Denver Broncos and I don’t understand anyone who really is a Bronco fan and doesn’t completely agree with me.
Do I think it will happen? -—- Hell yes I do -—- Go Broncos!!!!!!!!!

Amazing how the wheels reconnect!
BShrout, I am connected to you , because you seem to see how life connects to football, & that what you see on the field is merely a microcosm of our earthly day to day lives here & now. It is the greatest analogy. Sometimes, when it seems that the wheels are coming off, & our lives seem totally out of control, is when we actually are the most connected & in charge beings of them all. How strange? Contol is an illusion . The illusion gives us comfort. The comfort gives us hope. I am glad to say that, as far as I can see, things are totally out of control with our Broncos. This 2009 edition of our team could be a donkey, or a triple crown thorobred, but I am willing to embrace the result, either way, whatever it may be, Change is so far upon us! Dream big, Bronco Fans, in this fortnight of inactivity. We are entitled to dream about OROY’s, like Moreno & Quinn, & DROY’s. like Smith & Ayers. Fans, I just have to share a mental connection, ( you probably didn’t think I was capable of that.), with McDaniels, & a previous former 1st year coach. Red Miller. He inherited a similarly talented & dysfunctional team in 1976. I will not insult your intelligence or question your fandom beyond that point. Draw your own conclusions. Buckle up, my friends, & hang on for one wild ride! Your comfort level with this team has been reduced to zero, & I think you may enjoy a season of survival, with frequent defibrillations, to wake up to a possibilty of playoff scenarios so favorable, you will wonder how you survived the previous regime. Embrace change. Fear not. Face the future with resolve & hope. You will not be disappointed.

As Turnerstoe
said, I do see some similarities with the hiring of Miller and McDainels.
When Miller came in, he installed a fierce attitude into the team after being under John Ralston and his college approach. I also heard that Red hated the Raiders. He told them that the thing that was missing was that they weren’t beating the Faders.
Before they played Oakland in Week 5, the players came in for a meeting. It was dark, and they thought someone had died. Then, the projector came on, and Red was showing a bunch of dirty hits in games that Oakland was involved in. After Red said: “You know what I like about the Raiders? I don’t like anything about them”. And he went into a tirade and got his players fired up. One guy said that they were ready at that moment to get on the bus with their own money, go to Oakland, and kick their butt. That was the pivotal game in franchise history when they beat them 30-7.
With McDaniels, he is installing a team-first, character attitude after so many years of Shanahan’s dysfunction and living off the past after Bowlen gave him too much control that he shouldn’t have given him. Just like in 1977, I think the change will work wonders in 2009. I don’t see a SB in the first year like back then, but there will be SB’s in the future. Believe, Denver Fans, and have faith.
by PABroncofan on Jul 4, 2009 11:47 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree with you PA
Just like in 1977, I think the change will work wonders in 2009.
I’m not sure I see us being as emotionally charged under McDaniels as we were under Miller, but I can see us coming into every game fully prepared and confident that we can win on any given Sunday. While I don’t expect a Super Bowl run 2009, I’m am very confident that the potential is there. If we stay healthy and gel quickly during training camp and the pre-season, I think McDaniels will have us primed for a deep play off run this year.

The players may not be as emotionally charged under McDaniels
but you better believe they will be charged under Dawkins leadership. Player to player connections are what we’ve been lacking. Mike Shanahan is a great coach of HoF caliber, obviously. However, he didn’t see ALL players as people. He saw the ones he liked as people and the rest were disposable (see Cutler vs Plummer, Nov. 2006). Although I was never a player under him, it’s clearly obvious he played favorites.
McDaniels may not bring a whole lot of emotion to the team, but he’s brought in players that do. Brian Dawkins, Robert Ayers, Knowshon Moreno, etc. I like that McDaniels has stayed away from the Marshall talk because he knows as well as we do that BMarsh brings that much needed emotion to the game also. I think McDaniels wants him around for that and the situation at hand is something that he chooses not to engage because it will inevitably be his fault if Marshall leaves if he does.

I think you've identified the key components
McDaniels = will have the team solidly prepared, which will lead to self-confidence that they can win.
Dawkins = the emotional charge that will bring each player to exceed expectations.

Exactly.
I’m not so much worried about the offense being as “emotionally” charged as defense. They just need to do their jobs and move slowly but steadily down the field. The defense though… that should be a rabid dog waiting to bite your ass any chance it gets.

Marshall Emotion
I never got that Marshall contributed emotion to the team.
Was that a tongue in cheek comment that it will be McDaniel’s fault if Marshall leaves?

Don't all of us Denver fans know
that everything bad that has happened to the Broncos is McDaniels’ fault (according to the MSM)?
I’m sure that they would somehow find a way to blame Coach McD for all of our problems since the departure of Elway, if they could. LOL
IMHO, McDaniels has chosen to place himself in the line of fire and be the target for all criticism, so the players can concentrate on becoming a great team again.

It was meant to be sarcastic.
Even if McDaniels goes in with every intention on getting Marshall his deal but Bowlen still says no, you know just as well as I do that it would be McD’s fault in the MSM’s eyes. Even if Pat came right out and said McD was pulling for Marshall, it will always be his fault.
