Horse Tracks 7/23/09 - Broncos sign draft choices Quinn, McKinley; Happy Birthday, David Bruton!

DP - Broncos sign two, including second-round pick Quinn
Richard Quinn and Kenny McKinley have reached contract agreements, leaving seven players yet to be signed.
DP - Ayers says he expects to be signed before camp - Jeff Legwold
DP - Jury's ruling big for Bronco
Klis looks at the court case and possible suspension facing Brandon Marshall, including the not-so-pretty details of the police report.
DB - 2009 Position Previews: Defensive Line
Gray Caldwell looks at the Broncos' D-Linemen and the switch to Mike Nolan's D. Honestly, it seems every year we read/hear guys saying "It's much more fun to play in this system," or that "It's exciting to have all these new faces in the locker room." Personally, I'd rather hear, "I think this new defense is really going to work." Hopefully McDaniels doesn't believe in the "hire a new DC every year" strategy we've been accustomed to. Most interestingly, Marcus Thomas is putting on weight to play NT.
DB - 50th Anniversary Team: Defense
Highlights of the best defenders in Broncos history. Obviously, not a whole lot of recent footage.
DB - Contagious Enthusiasm
For what it's worth, Jim Saccomano says he's never seen so much enthusiasm and excitement throughout the Broncos organization.
NFP - Red in the face - Ray Gustini
Gustini takes a tongue-firmly-in-cheek look at what Shanny knows about the Broncos but isn't saying due to his contract provision. It's pretty funny stuff.

Al Wilson is chairing a golf tournament in TN to help people with disabilities.

Cuts both ways for BM.
Punishing Marshall twice for the same infraction? Doesn’t that seem like a ruling that would make the NFLPA cry bloody murder.
Goodell better hope Marshall wins his case or Roger will have a tough decision to make in a time he is desperately seeking peace with the union.
Regarding his contract and UFA, BM has no leverage in part due to the uncertainty surrounding the labor agreement. On the other hand, the same looming labor agreement may be his saving grace from avoiding a suspension in 2009.
It would be great to have BM for the Cincy and Cleveland games because those teams have serious holes in their secondaries.

Don’t forget that Goodell shortened BMarsh’s suspension last year. I’m guessing there were several stipulations attached to that, and that Brandon being found guilty or pleading down could trigger another suspension. He was suspended for all of his arrests; he wasn’t arrested for being guilty of whatever crimes he’s been charged with. He was suspended for soiling the NFL shield, by being arrested countless times and being in the headlines for the wrong reasons.
As a Broncos fan, I will be very upset if Marshall receives another suspension. But my head tells me that in such a scenario, he probably deserves it…

As always....
Highly appreciated nyc! That Gustini article was pretty harsh in some respects, funny, but it seems some of those are backed by some true feelings he has. Ouch. Nonetheless, thanks for the horse tracks! and that Jim Saccomano article is highly encouraging – maybe he reads some MHR too?
First team to three consecutive SB wins!!!! and then some, right? I think four and we oughtta let someone else have a fair shot : )

I like Carlton Powell's attitude.
“If the ball is coming in my direction, I’m either going to make the play behind the line of scrimmage or at the line of scrimmage,” Powell said. “Not much gets past me.” bq.
This kid seems to be chumping on the bit, so to speak.

I believe the enthusiasm is real??? Jim Saccomano seems sincere, whether it's a pep talk, we will see.
So what I am saying is, I have been here for 32 years and in pro sports for 35 years, and I have seldom seen such excitement or enthusiasm. I don’t care whether you believe me or not.
Very soon, this enthusiasm will be here for all to see, so obvious and visible that someone would have to be hiding in a cave somewhere to miss it. When that tidal wave crests, it will be advisable to be prepared for it.

Morning everyone
I am sure this is a new level of excitement about this year’s squad with the new coaching staff and all. I mean Ekuban stated on the Fan, as posted by HSFBCoach, that he would love to play for McD if given the chance. If you love to play for the HC then you will play a lot harder for him.
I can’t wait to see how things go in camp and for that fist preseason game.

We can't get any worse on D. We really can't. That would be impossible.
It’s telling that none of our D-linemen from last season have landed on another roster. Not Ekuban, not Engleburger (Jack of no trades / Master of none), not Robertson. Tells you a lot about the talent on our 2008 D-line.
As painfully bad as the secondary was, even Paymuh, Bly and Lowry were signed by other teams during the offseason. Don’t ask me why.
What I can’t fathom is Manuel (IMO, the single worst starter on an NFL team in the last decade) ever finding work in the NFL again.

Engleberger
I think that should be ’Can’t play Jack’ of all trades.

NYT article on Vick was strange
Burke claims that Vick should be given all of his rushing yards as passing yards (got that?). He also extols us to remember that the ball can’t be intercepted if it isn’t thrown but neglects to notice that the average rushing play in the NFL has a 3% chance of fumbling which is appx. the same percentage as INTs ( according to the Journal of Qualitative Analyses in Sports) and Vicks is even higher than the average. The point of the increased passing game is that you get more yards per attempt than rushing. I get the had loves Vick but this goes beyond that. Burke is apparently willing to accept that rushing yards are really passing yards but that’s fairly ridiculous. Even worse, he goes on to say
Vick’s pass completion stats aren’t padded by lots of rinky-dinky dumpoffs. David Carr actually led the N.F.L. in completion percentage in 2006 with a dazzling 68.3%, only to lose his job the following off-season (to Vick’s backup no less).
Padding your stats? Oh, sure, that’s why you throw short timing passes – has nothing to do with lowering the INT rates and moving the chains. Uh-huh. He finishes with
Yes, his interception and fumble rates are higher than you’d like, but those too should be considered in the context of the depth of his throws and the frequency of his runs.
So, give him credit for anything, take nothing away from him (even if true) and ignore any and all rules of keeping stats. Man, that’s one seriously bad article.
