Bobby Wade joins a podcast and suggests that Brian Urlacher is saying that Cutler isn't what they expected. It comes about 1/2 way through the podcast - Be warned about the language that Wade will use in his description

Urlacher denies the statement

Find it here – a funny story, but might not be true.

Wade backed off his statement right quick. Wade better watch out when he runs a crossing route vs the Bears.

And Cutler better watch out when he is playing Minn because they have a nasty D-line. The Chicago vs Minnesota game in Minn should be must see TV for all you Cutler haters. He could take a beating in that one.

by McGeorge on Jul 29, 2009 3:19 PM MDT reply actions

+1

That should be a very difficult game for Cutler. It will really show what kind of O-line he has and how well he can do without our guys keeping his jersey clean.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

by sadaraine on Jul 29, 2009 3:53 PM MDT up reply actions

Actually Bears fans

are pretty excited about the O-line we have.

We signed future Hall of Famer Orlando Pace.
Our first round selection from a year ago, Chris Williams is gonna start at RT. (he missed most all of last year)
We signed Kevin Shaffer to back up both tackles. He’s a guy that could’ve easily started for us last year.
Guard Roberto Garza was one of Forte’s favorite butts to run up last year.
We’ll have a healthy competition for the other guard spot between Josh Beekman and Frank Omiyale.
And last but not least Olin Kreutz at center. He’s getting older, but is still among the best.

by rdent4hof on Jul 29, 2009 5:12 PM MDT up reply actions

:)

Orlando is on his last legs and I hadn’t heard of any of those other guys other than Chris Williams.

Maybe Not So Generous

I think adding Pace and getting back Williams are their biggest upgrades. Pace isn’t the same player he used to be. Garza is VERY good. Shaffer is a journeyman. Omiyale is a journeyman. All in all, not greatly improved. Just somewhat improved depending on how well Pace performs and Williams (his 2nd year).

by Endzone on Jul 29, 2009 8:53 PM MDT up reply actions

Greatly improved?

When John Tait and John St. Clair were our bookends prior to the upgrade of Pace and Williams. Schaffer is a very suitable swing tackle and insurance policy. And Omiyale is pushing Beekman, who had a good year last year. Just the addition by subtraction makes the improvement more than somewhat.

Could Be

But I can’t bring myself to say greatly improved. Maybe improved somewhat, but not greatly. Hope springs eternal, but stats are good indicators of the future and those guys stats don’t impress me that much.

Journeyman.... maybe,

But he’s also a guy that has started every game he’s played, the last five years. Not bad for a Journeyman.

by rdent4hof on Jul 31, 2009 9:46 AM MDT up reply actions

It does look better than last year's

But it isn’t anything compared to Denver’s and that is what Cutler is used to.

I still predict rough times for him…we’ll see when the games get played.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

I'm more anxious to see

how Cutler handles the sub-zero temps and arctic blasts of Chicago and Green Bay come those games in November and December.

Denver weather is a frosted cupcake with sprinkles compared to those locales, and he’ll be playing in that stuff year after year (provided he stays in the windy city).

Take my advice... I'm not using it!

Just saying

I’ve never heard McD come out and say he offered him up for trade. So it’s all hearsay just like this story. It just seems to me that rumors can get to Jay. Urlacher IS the Bears, and when a leader like that allegedly calls Jay a little kitty, it just might bother him. Not saying it’s right or wrong. It is what it is.

It’s just nice to know Cutler was for the trade by the Broncos before he was against it.

I’ve always been a closet Packer fan, now I actually have something to root for at least twice a season. Well, at least for two seasons before Bus Cook tries to make Jay the $120 million man and does to the Bears what he did to the Broncos (and the Jets, and almost did to the Vikes).

I hate this stuff.......I really do........

The problem with QBs today is not the QBs its us fans. I realize that QB’s make a lot of money but ‘us fans’ seem to expect them to be highly trained specialists in public relations.

There is not a single long-time MHR member that didn’t see Jay do some very special things last year. Have you all forgotten that we sent somewhere between 10 to 12 RBs to injured reserve last year. I would like to see one of you ‘stat-types’ see what Jay’s rating was when he started and ended a game with the same RB……….and don’t use the last three games……..we had no ‘real’ RB at that point.

I hope the absolute best for Jay in Chicago—he is a very special talent.

If I see another negative ‘post’ or ‘shot’ concerning Jay I think I will peeuuuke.

Let’s rise above this sort of nonsense and end it.

Nah...

Because being a fan means you have the players you dislike as much as the ones you like. For example, we hate the Raiders. It’s nearly a requirement as a Broncos fan. Football is soap opera. You need your villains.

I have no problem rooting against a guy who was for the trade before he was against it — and rudely dismissed our team’s owner in the process.

Every team has it’s mythologies (pathologies?) and that’s how ours is shaping up. If Cutler can throw a hissy fit over “rumors”, well then I can enjoy them when they flow they other way.

To me, it’s just something on the national news about a former player. Personally, I think that it’s just Wade pulling Brian’s chain. I don’t for a minute believe that Urlacher would say this to a rival team’s player. Hey, we even print ‘news’ from Mr. Dukes ;-)

by Mike Clark on Jul 29, 2009 6:35 PM MDT up reply actions

I understand

My personal feelings don’t really come into this all that much. In this case, we have two main, active threads with over 350 total comments on them to date talking about this subject. My feelings in this case are based in an awareness that our folks aren’t ready to let go, and for whatever reason, Jay seems to be a bit of a lightning rod for commentary at this point in his life, which is ‘news’ to most folks. I think that it’s Ok to let the natural effect of inertia take over – when we’ve got a game against anyone but Chi, I don’t expect to hear much about Cutler on MHR. In the general boredom of pre-training camp fandom, It gives folks a chance to talk, laugh, debate and discuss, and that’s Ok with me too. You’ll notice that I haven’t been commenting much on these threads – it’s not a concern to me personally.

You might also notice that I bring up Cutler when it’s germane or matters to an article (like the Law of Threes this week), but otherwise I’m not concerned, so, yes – I’m looking at training camp with files on over 30 players that include research, articles, interviews and background that might make for a good Tales here or there, and I’m working on a 10 part history of the Draft and the Combine that includes a breakdown of the process from the 1st Draft in 1937 and the first Combine, which was sponsored by only three teams (Dallas, SF and Buffalo) in 1971 That’s my main focus. But I’m also aware that when I toss up a Fanshot or Fanpost on a national media article or interview that it’s going to draw folks from other websites, give them a chance to talk with our members and vice versa and that generally, a good time will be had by most, if not all. Which makes me happy ;-)

Bobby Wade has an axe to grind with the Bears, but

he is good friends with Urlacher and Lance Briggs. He also played with Orton in 2005. As a Bears fan, I believe what Urlacher said. It also sounded like Briggs has been talking with Wade about Cutler.
Urlacher and many of the veterans on the Bears were very unhappy with the trade. Orton was well liked and viewed as a good QB. Cutler will have to grow up before he’s accepted by the veteran players on the Bears. The behavior that was tolerated by the Broncos players/coaches will be a big issue with the many veterans on the team. In the end, this will be a good experience for Cutler.

He was just a Bears fan and saw his shot to play for his favorite team. Is it right? Not at all, he had a contract. Am I, as a Bears fan, happy about it? I can go either way. I really liked Orton- But obviously Jay has played well in the past as well. Here’s hoping he continues to play well in the future. Same for Kyle for that matter- I think he’s the real deal when it comes to being a team player and a true captain the guys will look up to.

It is only in his mind that “a lot of people on this site choose to believe the likes of KC Joyner.” McGeorge can raise interesting and rational discussions, but he usually attacks first. Jesus, McGeorge

Why must you be such a tool? If you need pats on the head from Bears fans for your “realist” viewpoint, McGeorge, head over to their site and make yourself their Bronco mascot.

People here have spent an inordinate amount of time discussing how well-liked Orton was by his Bears teammates. We’re also aware that many Bears fans weren’t as high on the trade as the Bears management seemed to be. To suggest otherwise is to try to impugn this site so that Bears fans will think you somehow a serious thinker — when in fact all you’re doing is crapping on the people here with a lie in order to pander to a contingent of Bears lovers.

It’s beyond pathetic.

Thats because Cutler is being marketed as bringing hope...

When, in fac t, you guys would have been better in keeping Orton, getting rid of Turner as OC, get half a good O Line and a top flight WR.
For what you gave up for Cutler, you could have gone a long ways to fixing your team.
You better hope AND pray that Cutler is all you hope him to be…..as a Broncos fan I have severe doubts!

Getting rid of Turner at OC?

This move makes too much sense for our management. A lot of fans have been wanting that for years now. As shown above, I think our OL did improve and am not that worried about our current crop of WR’s (chicken and egg debate).

I’ll pretty much put it like this. I am very much like Mike Clark, to the nth degree obviously. I am an optimist that will always believe there is hope with our team. We have not had a QB of Jay’s ability in a very, very long time. Like I said on the ostracizing post, let us enjoy our shiny new toy for a bit.

But remember. It was YOU who came to OUR site to discuss what was posted by Harv as “take it or leave it” hearsay. And then YOU posted on YOUR site your disgust with MHR members. We gave you our opinions in good faith.

I personally appreciate your dropping by and do wish your team success.

I don’t share your lack of worry about your WR’s. I think you’ve got middle of the road if not mediocre WR’s. A QB change alone (chicken & egg debate) will not change their skill set. Keeping Turner adds to your issues. Turner and Cutler will be like oil and water.

Although, disgust is a strong emotion that I never expressed. I also believe that while in your house, I have always posted respectfully. I appreciate yours and others opinions and will sincerely take it for what it’s worth.

We can agree to disagree on our receiver situation. I may be wrong in the end, it’s not the first time and will not be the last. As for Turner, I’m thinking he will be gone next year if Cutler fails to deliver. So, it’s kind of a win win.

Your Post

just ran across a ridiculous fan post currently up on the Mile High Report that is insinuating Jay Cutler is avoiding his Chicago teammates.

Obviously, this article is completely hearsay. However, the majority of the Denver faithful (on MHR) seem to not only believe what this person “heard”, but back up the theory with their very own anecdotal experiences.

All I can offer to them are these song lyrics: The scar that is the absence of Cutler may remain, but I promise time will heal your pain.

And yes, you have posted respectfully at MHR. Hopefully our crew has done the same at WCG. You may not have used the word disgust at your WCG post, but it was surely my impression that you were disgusted with “the majority of the Denver faithful (on MHR).

by Endzone on Jul 29, 2009 11:03 PM MDT up reply actions

I am in no way disgusted with MHR posters.

Some of those are jokes. Some of those were legitimate arguments.

> Were some of the postings ridiculous, yes.
> Was it hearsay, yes.
> Were the majority of postings that followed this anecdote and others either direct bashings of Cutler’s character without knowing whether it really happened or not, yes.

But to imply that I was disgusted with your fan base is far from accurate.

Defense

I’m not claiming innocence HoneyBear. I was simply pointing out that smudgers started it by coming on MHR, posting on WCG that flamed MHR, and then asked MHR to allow the Bears fans to enjoy your “shiny new toy.” I like smudgers and you. Except for Gesiakob, the other WCG posters have been respectful and thoughtful. The discussion about the original hearsay post, which was admitted to be so by Harv, has turned into an interesting discussion. I am not asking that “everyone needs to get along.”

Sorry smudgers, but as a long time Bears fan

i have to strongly agree with boydy. there are many Bears fans who feel the Bears’ management quit on Orton. one of the biggest criticisms from the fans that I know, was that many on the team lacked heart last year. Why in the world would a team trade away the one player who worked his rear end off, kept his mouth shut(Grossman), and had one of the biggest hearts on the team. The Bears had many problem areas on the team last year, but QB was not one of them. Any knowledgable football fan who had watched Orton excel at Purdue, knows Kyle has a tremedous amount of upside as a QB. It will be very interesting to see which QB has the better season.

by rocko1 on Jul 29, 2009 10:54 PM MDT up reply actions

You are in the minority, my friend.

At least from what I have seen. They probably gave up on Orton a little but the opportunity arose for the Bears to get a very talented QB with tremendous upside, at a very young age. They took it, and I applaud them. This move was very un-Angelo like.

I know KO has an upside as well, but I am pretty sure the majority of fans (Bears and Broncos, as I have found out) are happy about the outcome.

Orton is not much older than Cutler.

So thanks for the three draft picks, and enjoy your toy. Frankly, we have an embarrassment of riches on offense, and I’m thankful we have a QB who will use them, even if they aren’t 20-yards down field and double covered. Which it seems is how Cutler likes it — because it allows him to show off his gun.

That impresses Jamie Dukes and John Clayton. Winning impresses me.

Your mileage may vary.

Thanks boydy

I am not naive enough to know that there aren’t risks with Cutler, but I am envisioning, right now, that the rewards will be more prevalent. We have had 15 different starting QB’s in the past ten seasons and 23 since Jimmy Mac.

I don’t know if this will ultimately end the on-going carousel that is (or hopefully, was) the Chicago Bears QB situation, but there is definitely a change in the air that most Bears fans haven’t felt in a long time.

I feel for the Denver fans for what transpired between Cutler and the Broncos’ organization. I can honestly understand why a lot of fans feel betrayed the way they do. But on the other hand, I am glad to that we received a decent QB in the process, even though we had to pay a hefty fee for those goods.

Good luck this season! Bear Down!

One of my best buds is a Bears fan.

And when i called him the day the trade took place to tell him, what he told me was That he though JC was a good QB, and the trade would of been great if the Bears were the one piece, ie a QB, away, but he pointed out there were so many glaring needs on the team that the trade, in his opinion, was horrible.

I completely agree, lets just say for arguments point that JC is everything the MSM and Bears management are making him out to be, the problem is the Bears’ needs are much more than just a QB.

What are our other needs? Safety, possibly. OL, in a couple years. Receiver, not if he is everything they think (and I hope) he is.

I am a firm beliver in one player doesn't = team.

Barry Sanders was one of the best, if not the best RB to play the game. how many SB rings does he have?

I also am of the belief that WR’s make the QB look better. Case in point, and I hate to use this as an example because I don’t care for him, but I’ve drank too much too think any harder, is TO.

Like him or hate him, when he’s on a team, the team makes the postseason.

I agree with you.

But we do have other pieces in place. Matt Forte, Greg Olsen, Desmond Clark, Devin Hester. If Cutler can help progress a rookie or two and add to the success of the above mentioned players, I think we are more than a one trick pony.

OK - Bears Offense Quick Impressions

I like Forte, but he gained fewer yards than the Broncos RB’s. Score B

I like Clark and Olsen, but our TE’s are statistically better. Score B

I like Hester as a return man, but he is not an outstanding receiver. Score C-

I like rookies Iglesias and have heard good things about Knox. (PS I love your DT Jarron Gilbert pick) Score C+

Oline: Pace B+; Kruetz C+; Garza B+; Williams (who knows); Beekman C; Omiyale C; Shaffer C. Overall impression grade: C+ to B.

Overall impression: You are still desperately needing capable WRs, LG, RG and RT for your offense.

by Endzone on Jul 29, 2009 10:53 PM MDT up reply actions

Ooops

Sorry, shouldn’t have added RG but rather depth at RG. Garza is good. Not great, but above average good.

by Endzone on Jul 29, 2009 11:08 PM MDT up reply actions

Double Oooops

Forgot Cutler B or B+. Great physical skill set, questionable decision-making, some difficulty with the soft-touch ball, above-average long ball.

BTW, compared to Orton B. Very good decision-making, NFL level skill set, very good soft-touch ball, don’t really know about his long ball because he rarely got enough time in the pocket to throw a long ball.

by Endzone on Jul 29, 2009 11:21 PM MDT up reply actions

I will take a B rating from a fan of a different team.

Again, optimist here. You cannot rain on my parade, my friend. We haven’t had a B rated offense in many, many years.

And your Orton point concerning the long ball hold some water, but we did watch him over/under throw receivers on numerous occasions when he did have time. And for the record, I’m not bashing him, just noting what I have seen personally.

Just the Oline

Your WR’s bring down my overall estimate.

by Endzone on Jul 30, 2009 12:18 AM MDT up reply actions

Maybe so...

But when you add in our Defense (B+?) and ST (A+?), what would you give us? When our D is healthy and clicking, it is one of the better defenses in the league and could be even higher.

Wouldn’t all of this constitute an overall grade somewhere around a C+ to a B?

We'll see if changes in footwork and ball position

…aid in those deep balls.

And Orton will make the changes. Because he can be coached up.

Can Cutler? Dunno. But my bet is that had he thought he could have benefited from such coaching, he’d still be here.

We’ll see.

Generally, I think that Broncos fans feel the same way

While folks can argue till Hades has snowstorms about why things happened, most folks tend to agree that there was a big divide between Cutler and the Broncos management at the end and that it’s best for all to move on. Denver got Orton, whom most of us like and respect, along with a pick that essentially let us take Moreno and a pick that turned into Alphonso Smith, as well as 1/2 of the Richard Quinn pick. That’s a nice value.

As an old Chi fan, I can understand the happiness at getting a good QB that matches many folks’ idea of a ‘franchise QB’. Now it’s going to be up to D’Angelo, Lovie and Turner to obtain the right receivers, make sure that the O line develops (a young LT will be needed or a RT to replace Chris Williams if he moves over) and it’s fair to wait to see on Omiyale, while I think that Williams has a good shot at being a fine tackle at either end. After breaking down all of last year’s games, I found that some of the common statements about Orton were poorly based in the realities of the game, but I do think that Chi has a shot to improve overall if they now pay attention to expanding their offensive schemes and playmakers. If Cutler can help empower that, more power to him, and to you.

Hillis/Moreno in '09

Thanks BB

I agree, I think you guys got great value in what you received for Cutler. Moreno should be a great RB and if nothing else he will provide great TD celebrations. And Orton is a trooper. He fought his way through injury just to give us a chance. You will be very pleased.

I honestly believe this trade will pan out for everyone involved.

Reservations

I have no reservations at all that we got a good deal from the trade.

I do have reservations that the Bears got a good deal.

I hope that we both feel at the end of the season that we got a good deal because I have no hard feelings against the Bears at all.

by Endzone on Jul 29, 2009 10:39 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah, I hope this is a win-win trade as well

Since we’ll only see the Bears once every four years, there’s not any reason for me to hope otherwise. If both teams are on an upward trend, then that’s all that matters. More than the results on the field, I think this trade was necessary to change the cultures of both teams as well. For the Broncos, it was the message that the country club atmosphere is gone, and for the Bears I think its a sign that your management is ready to start taking big risks to get the team back on top. Cutler’s high risk, high reward, no question but I think Bears made a huge statement by getting him I get the impression from most of the Bear posters that part of the joy from the trade is that its the kind of thing the Bears normally didn’t do, that before the team was more about playing it close to the belt instead of going for broke. Am I wrong about that?

by bowma101 on Jul 29, 2009 11:56 PM MDT up reply actions

You are 100% correct.

Very unlike anything I have seen in my lifetime following the Bears, especially with Angelo leading the show. And you are probably right about the culture too, there is definitely a buzz in the air that wasn’t before.

Well, this story has definitely raised our level of interest to say the least. Now, I actually believe he said it because if he could use harsh words to describe his own child then he’s capable of what he said. Just because it’s in Vegas doesn’t mean that it will stay there. Don’t hate the messenger…hate the person who started it. Urlacher should’ve kept his mouth shut.

It has been said dozens of times and it’s true: It takes more than a franchise qb to win multiple titles. Teams that created dynasties all shared the same philosophy" we were loaded with talent in every area. Elway, Staubach, and Aikman benefited from a great support system that paid up nicely for what they needed. That’s how it’s done: Hester is a nice receiver but Rod Smith and Michael Irvin were clutch receivers that made great catches and did the impossible. We got what we paid for and if the Bears want that type of qb success, they need to pay for the support. He needs great receivers and a young O line to support him. They need to begin to address their aging defense also. They’re not saviors and can’t do it alone.

Needagoodtime!

by Loveforjoy! on Jul 29, 2009 11:20 PM MDT reply actions

Excellent Point

Elway was a true franchise QB from day one but didn’t win a SB until he had a great support system. Cutler is now a “franchise QB” because the Bears bet their franchise future on him. Not because he is one.
