3 Things - that make me think positively

This time of any sports season is great.  Everyone is equal.  No one has hit anyone, no one has got injured and if you're lucky enough to support a team in the first part of the alphabet your team sits atop the division.  I'm normally a positive chap and I like to think the best of things - you may say I wear orange tinted glasses, I've drunk the Kool Aid and I'm on board the bus. So I thought I'd start what I hope to be the first of a new series called "3 Things" with three things that are making me think positively about the Broncos 09 season.  There are more than three things but keeping it to three means I cut out the waffle.

Star-divide

1.  Better secondary can make everyone look good.

I know its always said that its the defensive line that makes a team better but why can't a better secondary make a team look good?  All non-Champ starting positions have been upgraded significantly including the Nickel Corner.  Would you rather have Bly, McCree, Manuel and Paymah or Goodman, Dawkins, Hill and Smith?

Coach McDaniels has spoken on a couple of occasions about improving turn overs and making sure the secondary keeps plays in front of them and doesn't let anything past them.  There were too many times in 08 where long runs and long passes got through the Broncos.  Would Larry Johnson have twice run over Brian Dawkins the same way he ran over Marlon McCree?  This secondary is such an improvement over the 08 team that improved play here will make sure that the rest of the defense looks better - even if they're not much above NFL average.

A better secondary and a slight dip in form last year means more QBs will throw at Champ Bailey.  He won't be walking around with a target on his back like DeAngelo Hall or Karl Paymah but he will see some more throws his way, and more throws his way means more interceptions.  Last season teams knew they didn't have to take a chance with Champ because they could yards pretty much anywhere else on the field.  The New England game was a prime example until Champ left the game him and Randy Moss may as well have pulled up deckchairs and done crosswords but once Champ was out, Moss started to get yards.  A better secondary forces teams to take Champ on, which can only be good for the Broncos and make the whole team look good.

2.  New Coach Bounce.

Atlanta, Miami and Baltimore.  Terrible in 07 and play off teams in 08.  They all won 11 games in 08.  They only won 10 games between them in 07.  They all had new coaches in 08.  They also all had new QBs.

I don't claim to be clever enough to analyse the different approaches, skills and abilities of Coaches McDaniels and Nolan but all I can say is that last year these three teams got new coaches and had some pretty significant changes to their playing staff went from being teams that looked below average on paper to playoff teams.

Of course the Broncos are in a division with the Chiefs and Raiders who both appointed new coaches and the Browns and Jets will also be hoping to get the same bounce.  But having looked at the off season activity from the other four teams, none of them have made as many significant appointments - both playing and coaching - as the Broncos.

3.  The Broncos don't have to be better than the Steelers to get to the playoffs.

The AFC West was the worst division in football in 08.  The Broncos are playing 4 games during this season against teams that are ranked below them on the last power rankings chart I saw.  And the Broncos weren't even rated that high.  If you think that the Broncos are in a poor state at the moment., then you must take heart from the fact that the Raiders and the Chiefs are in a worse state.  So using this logic that's 4 wins - Sure Arrowhead and the Coliseum aren't great places to travel to but if you're going to the playoffs you have to win there.  And the two opening games come against Cleveland and Cincinnati which are ranked just as low as the Broncos.  So if the Broncos are going to be as good as I hope they are, that should amount to 6 wins.

The other AFC divisions are much more competitive than the AFC West.  The AFC South is likely to be a 3 team shoot-out with all 3 teams taking games off each other keeping their wins low.  Although I can see the Pats strolling through their division, I can also make a case for Miami winning a few early on in the season and the Jets will benefit form the new QB and Coach combo, don't be surprised if both teams split their series with each other along with the Pats.  The North should be a Pittsburgh's to lose and the Ravens may continue to improve but still lacking in offensive play-makers and aren't going to be as much of a stand out team as last year and are more likely to be dragged back into the fight for a wild card.  With other divisions being more competitive, there's a chance the wild card mark could be at about 9 wins rather than the 11 and 12 last year.

But more importantly.  The Broncos only have to be better than the Chargers over 16 games.  When you compare what the Chargers have done to get better to what the Broncos have done then there's no comparison.  The Chargers played a dangerous game of resting on their laurels during the offseason.  They are returning all but two starters - one on offense and one on defense.  They finished with the same record as the Broncos.  The Chargers management seem to believe that they'll be better this season simply "because".  Can you imagine the Broncos returning 10 starters on both sides of the ball?  The Chargers have gone from 14 wins to 11 wins to 8 wins and haven't made any drastic changes.  The Broncos could be looking at needing only 9 wins to clinch the division or to get into the playoffs.

And then, well, any given sunday.....

I thought this might be relevant to point 1:

It comes from the PFW/Yahoo Sports preview, in the article Second in Command. The premise of the article is that an elite pass rusher is the second most important element, next to QB, to a good team. There is at least one dissenter, obviously, in the NFL:

One head coach who told PFW he thought cornerback was the second-most important position made the point that there is no direct correlation between sacks and victories. His theory was that it is better to have corners who can cover down-field and prevent big plays than it is to have players who disrupt the quarterback.

“The team that gets the most sacks never wins the Super Bowl,” the head coach said. “Some do really well in that category and win, and some don’t. To me, if you start gining up plays in the back end that’s when you really struggle.”

Loved the post, by the way, and couldn’t agree more— with it, or the head coach above. I think if you really pay attention to this team the last two years, its the inept play of the secondary that has absolutely killed them. It didn’t matter if they generated a pass rush or not.

I suppose it could be MacDaniels.

That quote sure puts words behind a plan that HAS IN FACT been thought through and played out this glorious offseason.

This secondary as illustrated in my post yesterday is a vast improvement over last year.

It all begins with Mike Nolan’s agressive, attack syle of defense, along with Ed Donatell who has improved secondaries every where he has gone, even here from 1995 to 2000. We should excel in every category of defense, hands down. More forced fumbles, more INT’s, mean more time for our offense to be on the field. That means more scoring oppportunities. I look for our defense to win us 3 or 4 games this year alone. Thanks Mike.

I like 1 and 2

Don’t forget Merriman is back and they have added Larry English. It’s not the same team as last year. That said, I still think the Broncos can win one of the two games. Why to I think that? McDaniels, Nolen, Orton, Moreno, Hillis, Royal, Marshall, Stokely, Gaffney, Graham, Scheffler the entire offensive line, Ayers, Domervil, Davis, Larson, Woodyard, Thomas, Fields, Bailey, Goodman, Smith, Hill and DAWKINS! Just to name a few reasons.

by Bronkfan on Jul 30, 2009 1:23 PM MDT reply actions

I take your point that the chargers are getting Merriman back and adding English but if the Broncos entire offseason strategy rested on getting champ bailey back fit and healthy, would you expect them to be as good? And I much prefer the addition of Knowshon to English.

A split with the Chargers would be acceptable but what a way to show that the team has grown if they can go into San Diego and not get hammered.

Secondary

An upgrade in personnel at any position would have potentially positive affects for the entire D. However, the real question to answer defensively is: how much time does the opponent have to make a play. As Dandy Don Meridith used to say to Howard Cosell “Howard had enough time to complete a pass on that play”.

A great secondary buys time for the line to rush but time is the enemy. Let’s not focus on buying time but rather taking “it” away from our opponents. The distance to the QB is shortest from the line of scrimmage where linemen and blitzing linebackers usually lurk.

I continue to think Marcus Thomas will play a KEY role in setting up the rush from linebackers/d-ends.

I will go along with all that has been said

Being an Aston Villa fan in the English Premier League for the last 50+ years I have neither had the glass half full or half empty approach. More like, “I won’t bother with a glass at all because someone will take it away from me anyway”.

It was beginning to get like that with the Broncos, promising so much and delivering so little. Strangely I feel relaxed about the upcoming season. There seems to be a steady authoritative air about all the comings and goings.

Improving the secondary I believe is a masterstroke, both in stopping the run and defending the pass. If all receivers are covered then it gives the front seven ample time to reek havoc. A new D coach with new schemes and the personnel playing to their strengths simply HAS to improve us.

If this D becomes anywhere near “average” I might just order myself some kool-aid.

I like the analysis Mike and it all makes perfect sense to me. A nice well thought out post.

I have so many friends some I haven't even used yet

Well its gonna hurt then when Martin ONeil gets up to leave when my United come a-calling ;)

If the D can get into the top half of the overall league stats then the Broncos will be in the play offs.

If you will notice the Pittsburg Steelers won with their defense, #1 in points allowed.

They were 20th in the league in scoring, thus they weren’t actually as balanced as you would like them to be. Yet they won the Super Bowl. Call it good timing or played hard enough to win or just good old fashioned luck? They won five (5) games with a total of 17 points difference, that’s a margin of 3.4 points more a game average. For instance, if they had let the other teams make an average of 4 points in those 5 games they would have been 8-8 instead of 12-4, because one of those 5 games they won by 5 points, so I gave them that one. All that said, if the Denver Broncos can score more points this year (not total yards) and the defnse comes down to say maybe 12th or 13th in points allowed, then we could be in the same drivers seat the Steelers were. Just rambling on, but, with the team we have, there is a chance that we could get there…13-3 Baby!!!

And our offense

Has got a LOT more going for it than Pittsburg’s! :D

It's Orange Crush time. And no I am NOT talking about the soft-drink.
Which I beg the question: "Can liquid really be... soft?"

3 TE Set = 3 losses or less.

Do it MickeyD... 13-3!!

Just keep games close!

I would much rather start the 4th quarter behind by 3 points in all 16 games than start 8 fourth quarters ahead by 20 and 8 behind by 20.

Thanks Mike nice work....

Anything that improves our defense overall will make the Broncos a overall better team. I think the defense will be used the way is should, get the other teams offense off the field so you can go to work with yours. Conversly the offense needs to eat the clock and put points on the board while keeping the defense fresh and ready to go.

Excellent post, Mike..

I believe that you echo the sentiments of many of us.. the secondary was abysmal last season! When you couple that with the huge amount of turnovers, it was impossible to have a winning season.

Attitude, execution and a defensive plan will make an incredible difference this year! Please pass the Kool Aid.. orange is my favorite!

Rec’d.

The depth chart is important.

We’ve got only-so-many capable defensive starters, and we’ve got an eternity of capable offensive starters. McD saw that coming in. Let’s get those turnovers!! Cause our Offense can fight and survive much longer than our Defense can. I say we take risks and go for the ball constantly. We’ve got enough offensive subs (and strategies apparently) to run and pass the ball all night long!

If that doesn’t get you psyched to see some hard-knocks, I don’t know what does!

This is a good post indeed, but don’t base your success on what other teams did. They had different schedules so it was easier for them. Your road is alot tougher so just take it one game at a time and let the progression flow. One word about playing the NFC East: it is a true running division and it is very tough. If you can handle their run attack then it’ll tell how your new look defense is going. The Giants are the toughest and look for their tough defensive front-it’s a monster. They don’t stake 8 to the box that often, they don’t have to. Their defense shut down the Patriots high powered offense and their front office got what they paid for.
