YES!!!!!! Finally, Broncos TV has joined us in the 21st century. A larger video player, with full-screen capability and real volume control!! Oh, and Coach McDaniels spoke. He basically says not to pay much attention to early depth charts. Apparently, Johnny Knoxville is out getting Broncos sound bytes (green shirt) - talk about a fall from stardom...

The Klis article was an atrocious example of MSM-ness. I posted a comment there plugging MHR; hopefully Klis and/or others check us out.

Thanks-- How about this plot synopsis for TC-Day -1:
Hope Springs Eternal or The Dove Valley Redemption.
When Kyle Orton is falsely convicted of being a bad QB, he has nothing but the enduring human spirit to drive him. In Denver, he meets the grizzled yet inspiringly whimsical Brian Dawkins and together they change the culture— indeed, they bring hope— to the dreary and hopeless institution know as Dove Valley. Through his enduring spirit, Orton survives a viscious gang called the Cynics and even wins over the yard bull MSM…but Orton has something more up his sleeve….
Man, I’m just looking forward to having some real football to talk about.

Nice.
Even though Orton isn’t a Bear anymore, I hope he still does really well for you guys (except when you’re playing Chicago…of course.) He is a hard worker, and I’m sure you’ll be happy with him. Nice synopsis. I’ll be happy to see it come true! It was a nice break to my early morning routine. :)

Lucas Taylor
has been waived — saw that in the footnotes of an article =)
Also about Everette Pedescleaux, I had been looking at some of the footage I saw of him [tuesday evening] and had sent this to HT just to see if I was on the right track for one of my first attempts at “scouting” [preparing for going to camp saturday, ha]… these were my notes to HT:
Things that stood out to me [a lay-person]:
Always the first person on his line off the snap, sometimes by a considerable amount… his reaction to the snap seemed really quick [or the rest of his line is super slow].
He seems very quick to react to recognizing whether the play is a run/pass
Constantly faced double teams and seemed pretty good at getting off of them
Tackled well, only seemed to not tackle when he was falling
Seemed to have a good motor, always moving
He was playing DT [R and L] in a 4-3, but I could easily seem him playing LDE / RDE and maybe even NT, although I think he would need to put on some extra weight probably… I think he is listed at 305 [6’6].

MHR.
I warned you guys about Klis. He has been writing some pro-The Coach articles lately, but don’t forget that he is a baseball guy masquerading as a football writer.
Other than the two Rocky Mountain News guys at the DP and Paige (for comedy), Denver has nothing in the way of a writer that can cover the Broncos in a matter befitting what you guys expect (i.e. knowledge of the roster).
NYC – Yahoo linked their "related" Bronco news to MHR instead of the DP, DB.com or another source. Congrats, but the site is one step closer to MSM.

RB Rankings
OK. I’ll admit that I like the MSM Power Rankings. Kind of like reading porn in my closet as a 14 year old. A guilty pleasure. I’ll often check the Power Rankings after Monday Night Football to see where the Broncos are listed. I know it’s wrong, but I do it anyway.
Fox news has RB Rankings by team ranking the Broncos at 26.
In their defense, the MSM really doesn’t know anything so how can they come up with any accuracy? Torain is the only RB held over, our FA’s have injury histories and Moreno is unproven.
Doesn’t it astonish anyone here, though, that they rank us so low when we outgained so many other teams last year and our Oline and running game coaching is intact?

I've put in 50 bucks to a betting pool....
They had Denver as a 1/250 chance to do better than 8-8. I’ll take that bet. I figure, the worst that happens is I’m out 50, but if they go better, I’ll be sitting pretty for school next year.

I never bet on my own teams BUT
I decided to plunk down $50 since the over and under for denver was 7 wins. All they have to do is win 8 games and I win a fair amount since odds were good. Too tempting.
If they win 7 or less you can blame me!

I enjoy power rankings as well, but we can all agree that preseason power rankings are a pretty silly exercise. I personally don’t think much of the 2009 teams in KC, Oakland, Cleveland, Cincy or Wash DC, but a few of those teams are bound to surprise. Much like a Minnesota, Atlanta and/or Baltimore is bound to stink. Around week 5, those rankings become a great read.

In the 3-4 – does the OLB or safety cover the TE on pass routes? Or does zone coverage take this into account?
If the OLB does have one on one coverage responsibilities for the TE, which player on our roster would handle such duties?

OLB covering the TE.
Do we have an OLB on the roster that projects as a coverage OLB? Would Woodyard do this? I ask because I don’t see how we expect Ayres, Reid or Elvis to go from being a D-linemen to a coverage LB. That sounds very drastic. Like asking a WR to move to RB.
I’m not a Boss Bailey fan, but I thought this is what he did.
Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.
by McGeorge on Jul 30, 2009 11:50 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Woodyard is mostly an ILB from the stuff I have been reading [andra davis / dj would be the two starting ILBs] — but I guess they could try him at OLB to get him on the field.
Ayers / Reid / Elvis / Moss / Crowder are the ones I have seen listed at OLB [also at DE for all of them]. Moss has supposedly shown he can drop back and I wouldn’t doubt that Reid could considering his special teams speed. Doom’s length should help him since he should have help over the top anyway from the strong safety.
I am sure someone a lot more knowledgable than me can elaborate further though =)
by Todd Jewell on Jul 30, 2009 12:02 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yikes.
If Ayers / Reid / Elvis / Moss / Crowder are the guys being considered as the coverage OLB, this is certainly a position to watch in training camp. That is 5 D-lineman being asked to learn a totally new skill set.
Thanks for the color. I’d hadn’t really contemplated how this would work. I think several of the players listed above could make solid pass rushers as OLBs, but I’m a bit worried to see any one them trying to stay with Gates or Witten.
Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.

I'm guessing the LB's will primarily play zone...
…and with four of them, you have the flexibility of allowing D.J. to cover the TE if for some reason you want to cover the TE with a LB. That would resemble a typical man/under in the 4-3— with the 3 LB’s playing basic zone drops, only with a LB assuming responsiblility for the TE rather than the SS. The S’s are then both freed up to cover more fleet WO’s. In fact, most often, I’d bet that since one OLB will almost always be rushing/stacking, the remaining three take a lot of standard drops. But I imagine the goal, in a perfect world, is to use the SS (or a safety) on the TE. I guess part of that depends on the TE in question, too.

I don’t like a former D-linemen’s chances of covering Gates one-on-one. Wouldn’t matter whom that D-lineman was. I still have nightmares when I think about Gold trying to cover Dallas Clark and Gold was supposedly good in coverage.
Nonetheless, one of my biggest grips with the Broncos draft class in 2009 and their FA spending was that we did not address the acquisition of an OLB with coverage skills/experience. I don’t see anyone on Denver’ s current roster that even remotely fits this mold. It will be very interesting to see how our OLBs do in training camp with dropping into coverage.
And maybe it’s not that important if you can match up better in zone coverage. Will the Broncos be running primarily zone coverage out of the 3-4?
Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.
by McGeorge on Jul 30, 2009 2:48 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Schematically, I don't expect the OLBs to have to cover man-to-man much
You can probably count it one hand, the number of times it will happen in a game. Remember, think of this supposed “3-4” like it’s a 5-2, because it will almost certainly play like one. The OLBs will be going forward, setting the edge in the running game, and rushing the passer in the passing game.

You won't see many man-to-man matchups from the LBs
They will definitely either be rushing (the pass or the runner doesn’t matter) or dropping into zone coverage.
Now someone might surprise (like Moss) and show himself very good at coverage roles. If that happens, we’ll most likely hear about it during training camp. Don’t forget we have a back-up safety that did pretty decent against Gonzoles last year (Barret I think? Someone jump in here and correct me). We can always use packages with him playing man on the TE. That will be the neat thing this year…having a game plan. Having a scheme. Wow…it’s sound almost like we’ll actually be playing NFL Defense for a change. :)
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

Overview
Barrett has an injury history scouts will evaluate closely. When he’s on the field, he is a fine athlete with a combination of size, speed and instincts to promote a possible switch to outside linebacker in a Cover-2 defense. He’s a sure tackler who hits hard and had six career interceptions.

go look at the passing camp videos
Barrett talks about covering TEs as a “Nickel Satety” here.
BTW — what I liked about Boss was his ability to cover TEs.
Also — one of the things I’ve talked about previously is the problem of covering TEs and big receivers. Specifically, the Tanier article discusses how a blocking TE such as Quinn helps when facing a 3-4 defense, and I’ve speculated about the S/CB hybrids being a way to counter the big receivers. Many of our big DBs — DJ Johnson, Barrett and Bruton — could handle this role. I’m only guessing here, but my intuition told me that we could have a ‘TE covering specialist’ on our final roster.

They will play zone the majority of the time
We run the “3-4” at the school I coach at. Depending on the team, we will either play with normal personnel (3 DLinemen, 4 LB’s) or some form of nickel/dime packages (take 1 or 2 LB’s off and replace with DB’s). We run zone coverages (2, 3, 4 and variations of all) about 90% of the time . . . this only requires the OLB’s to cover the hook/curl, or the flat. The ONLY time we will have them go to man coverage is when we are bringing 5 or more rushers. Depending on the quality of the TE we are playing against, we may allow the OLB to cover him man-to-man, or we may sub him out and use a DB instead.
I see the Broncos doing something very similar . . . zone coverage minimizes the risk of exploiting your OLB’s.

I think DOOM
will be quite a surprise dropping into coverage this year. He has all the right “stuff” for being an elite in that category (for an OLB at any rate), and during the OTAs he impressed the assistant coaches with how quickly he picked up on zone nuances.

Some funny stuff
Just saw an article through Yahoo, read it and had to repost this comment. Funny stuff to start a Thursday.
“That Orton guy sure does suck. He can’t even master the “shoulder pad grab, hat on backwards pout when things go poorly” routine. How weak. You can play more than half a season on a sprained ankle but you cannot pout. Sheesh…Denver traded away a franchise pouter for a guy that doesn’t know how to pout? Way to go Mc (Fill In The Blank)!
C’mon, Kyle…watch the video tape again. See how Jay yells at a WR after he throws at his feet on third down….now go to the sidelines and throw off your helmet….good so far…stomp around a bit more…that’s it…put your hat on backwards…yes, I know it looks silly but just do it…okay…now grab the shoulder pads…no…right at the collar of the jersey…there ya go…now pout.
Hold on, you call that a pout? Stick that lower lip out further and refuse to talk to or look at a coach or teammate while you pout and grab the pads…almost…more pout…c’mon…feel the pout burn! Alright, enough for today…hit the showers and watch the 2008 season again…make sure to work on losing your composure when the San Diego guys taunt you." – Posted on DP by 5280
