Weighty matters - The front 7 in 2008 vs. 2009

What have the Denver Broncos done this off-season to improve the defensive front seven?  Last year this was the most obvious weakness with the Broncos as they had difficulty stopping both the run and getting sacks.

Switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 with one less defensive lineman and one additional linebacker might give the impression that the front seven as a whole would get lighter and quicker since linebackers are lighter and quicker than lineman.  Of course a Nose Tackle to clog up the middle would be heavier, so maybe on average there wouldn’t be much difference between last years horrible defense and this years, right MSM?

Star-divide

Now before we look at the 2009 players battling for a spot on the 2009 opening day roster, I must say that this isn’t really an "apples to apples" comparison.  We don’t yet know if the lightest or heaviest players will be cut, but with the mantra coming from the new regime being "Bigger, stronger, smarter, … it may be that the opening day roster’s average may be more than the current competition.  So how much different do you think the current competition compares with last years?

Is the per person average –

Lighter?
About the same?
Five to Ten pounds heavier?
Ten to Fifteen?
More than Fifteen?

Surprised?

One more way to look it this is the average weight of the whole front seven is 5 pounds lighter then last years defensive line and 35 pounds heavier than last years linebackers.

This alone doesn't mean that the Broncos defense will be better than last years, but it does prove that it is no where near the same defense that stunk up the league last year.  It much bigger, stronger and I'd wager smarter as well.

I wonder if LJ and LT will feel the difference?

That’s the most informative/opinionated/creative Comment I have seen yet.

Rec’d!

It's Orange Crush time. And no I am NOT talking about the soft-drink.
Which I beg the question: "Can liquid really be... soft?"

3 TE Set = 3 losses or less.

Do it MickeyD... 13-3!!

Questions in order:
  1. Alot!
  1. I don’t know, I have no affiliation with the msm.
  1. The competition will suffer severely this year.
  1. No. I’m not surprised at all, McDaniels has a plan and it will be effective.
  1. One of them may have trouble staying out of jail, and the other one, well he may not even be around when we play him.
  1. 6 Oh yeah, there wasn’t a #6 but the front seven will be there this year where they weren’t last year. All new fresh coat of paint on this Bronco…13 -3 Baby!!!

Word out of KC on LJ

is he is keeping his mouth shut, finally growing up a bit, and respects his new coach. Many here thought LJ was done, but chef fans are begining to hope for a big year from him.

Its sad that they lost Tony.

He gave everything for the Cheifs and truly deserves a ring. I hope he can get one with ATL before he retires, great guy.

AND… Now KC is REALLY gonna suck! Lol.

Nice work.

Nice work, but I think you´re looking at it a bit wrong. A more accurate calculation should be something like this:

2008: 284.2 × 4 + 234.1 × 3 = 1839.1

2009: 2009 308.0 × 3 + 252.7 × 4 = 1934.8

As you can see, the total difference in the front 7 will be a bit less than 100lbs or about 14lbs per person. It may help, but I don´t think it will be a huge factor. As always, execution will probably matter more than bulk or speed.
