Give me your one 2009 draft bust.
I've been thinking about this for a long time and have been meaning to ask all of you. Finally I'm getting around to it. My question is, who is your one guy picked in the 1st round of this past draft that you are convinced will be an absolute bust. I'll tell you my guy but first I want to say I didn't pick the obvious choice Darrius Heyward-Bey for a couple reasons. First, he is a WR and they seem to bust more than any other position so it wouldn't really be a surprise. Second, saying he is going to be a bust is like saying you would burn to death if you poured gasoline all over you and struck a match. So who is my guy you ask???
Andre Smith. OT. Cincinnati Bengals
His last year with Alabama, he was suspended for his Bowl game against Utah for messing around with different agents or something. He showed up to the combine totally out of shape. I saw a couple interviews with him and he seemed to laugh it off. My feeling is he has a bad attitude, is lazy, and has no interest in winning. Once he starts facing NFL men instead of college boys, he will tuck his tail and run.

I'm looking for a prediction.
How about this. Who’s the one guy you were praying Denver wouldn’t draft
All you get from drafting the "best player available" is a team full of good football players.

Darrius Heyward Bay
He’s got bust written allover him. Not to mention Jamarcus Dlineman Russell.

+1 That's my pick, too. Orakpo.
Wasn’t Gholston for the Jets also considered a “workout warrior”? I’d prefer to staff my football team with football warriors, thank you.

I hope....
for the Lion’s sake, it’s not Matthew Stafford
I’d have to agree with you though ob, after taking a good look….
But I would love if it was Larry English or Heyward-Bey – just because
; )
First team to three consecutive SB wins!!!! and then some, right? I think four and we oughtta let someone else have a fair shot : )

Josh Freeman
Talk about having all of the attributes that scouts drool over and doing absolutely nothing with it in college.
by lakebuff on Jul 31, 2009 2:23 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Freeman sort of reminds me of Leinart...
in a strange way. Leinart has some serious skill and it hurts me to say it because I’m a USC boy, but he really dropped the ball in the NFL. Luckily he finally seems to be getting his business together though. I think Freeman will be ok, TB has never been one that’s gone after a top 5 quarterback anyways. If nothing else, he’ll be just like the guys before him were.

Maybe a List
It’s hard to pick just one, so I have a list:
6. Andre Smith – like you said
7. Darrius Heyward-Bey – all hype
9. B.J. Raji – overhyped as a NT, even though he has excellent quickness.
13. Brian Orakpo – workout warrior, not a player
Since Smith is the highest drafted potential bust, I’ll go with him.

#1 - Crabtree
Maybe not the typical bust, per se, but a bust as far as being a coach killer and team chemistry exploder. And, to answer your follow up question, he IS the one guy I was hoping Denver would not pick!
- Heyward Bey – Can’t believe Al-kenstein drafted him that high.
- - (please, oh please, oh puh-leeeeeeeeze) Larry English

Mark Sanchez
He is the player that I absolutely didn’t want McX to draft. I think he will fail in the Big Apple. If he makes it, great for him. He will definitely get paid though. I won’t be surprised if they don’t have him posing underwear on billboards on Madison Ave.

Start At The Top.
I have never liked Matt Stafford and sincerely doubt that he will be successful in the NFL. Heck, he wasn’t all that successful at the college level! Anyone that saw a reasonable ammout of Georgia football during his tenure knows that the Bulldog currently in orange and blue was the reason why that team’s offense was whatever it was.

RE
I happen to follow UGA football. WR has always been a thing of difficulty for the recruiting staff. Massoqoui (spelling) was UGA’s best WR and he’s known for being laid out. Concentration issues will definitely challenge that WR but he can only get better.
UGA is known for running the ball, playing some defense and has consistantly produced decent talent for the NFL. I know, George Foster played there _

Tyson Jackson could be headed for hard times.
Not because he’s lacking in the skill department, but much like Stafford, he’s gone to a team that really has nothing to support him with. At least Detroit has Calvin Johnson who can give Stafford a nice safety valve from time to time. I think KC is relying of TJ to make them good all around.
Also, I’d say Heyward-Bay is a bust and it’s almost entertaining that some of the draft experts were almost laughing when he was drafted at 7th. I remember the terms “questionable” and “reach” coming into play quite a bit on that one.
If I had to pick a wild card to really do well given his draft position, I’m sticking by my other USC boy, Rey Maualuga. He should have never fallen that far (although he said he had offers from other teams that he declined). Look for Rey to help out a Cincinnati defense big time this year.

Better than Maualuga? Hmm.
I think Cincy got a stud there with little cost, but we will have to see. I was rooting for Rey because I love the intensity these Somoans bring. But I may be wrong about him. I will keep a close eye on him during the season. I just have that feeling he is going to be a stud.

Ditto.
I think he was the best player drafted based on draft position. We’ll have to see how he works out in the pro’s but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get a Pro Bowl or two in his time. He’s got a very intense game that reminds me a lot of his big haired friend, Troy Palamalu.

same high school as Booby?
You mean, you don’t give much credence to the omen that since Stafford went to the same high school as Bobby Layne, the Lions’ last competent QB, that Stafford will be the Lions’ next great QB?

I'd say....
Basically the Three quarterbacks drafted (Stafford, Sanchez, Freeman). Crabtree will look like a bust because the 49ers do not have a quality quarterback (Shaun Hill is not the answer for them IMO).
Tyson Jackson will probably bust. I actually think Orakpo will do fine in Washington, he’ll be a DE like he was in Texas instead of being converted to OLB
by CombatChuk on Jul 31, 2009 6:46 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
I pick...
Normally I wouldn’t do something like this because its unfair to the players. There is a lot of adjusting to do from college and into the NFL. Not everyone can be an Eddie Royal. Its definitely a transitional period where the right, influential people can help a rookie develop both on and off the field.
If I were to guess a 1st rounder from this class to not do very well in the NFL I’d say it’d Freeman. If those tangibles scouts and coaches were crazy about weren’t brought out at some level at the college game, we’re looking at how many years before those intangibles become consistent for winning games?
How about a different twist? Ayers or Moreno, who’s more likely not to live up to expectations?
Say hello to my fast...

Out of Ayers or Moreno
I would honestly have to say Ayers. Running Backs usually transition very well to the NFL but the DE always takes a bit to work. On top of that Ayers is going to be a OLB instead of a DE like he played in college.
I would love to be wrong, if Ayers is menacing like DeMarcus Ware I’ll be all that more stoked.

The busts are...
Andre Smith( still don’t understand why Bengals drafted him with other prospects on board), Darrius Heyward Bey(not so much because his career is already considered dead.) and Mark Sanchez. I don’t really thrown people under the car before the season begins though.
Non Busts are … the runnning backs. Most of them went to good teams.
Larry English and Jackson were drafted by proven draft guru. Do you reallly think that they will busts?
Crabtree will not perform better than his ability. That is not a bust but it is not a steal.
Colts player developers gave good review of Orakpo and gang and the Colts are pretty good at evaluating defense players.
Josh Freeman because he doesn’t start the season, unlike the other two.
Chris Wells is with one of the great 2009 offenses. He wil not fail.
by Sportsboy on Jul 31, 2009 8:14 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Politely agree to disagree on Jackson...
I think he’s a good player no doubt, but in KC’s defense he won’t do much this year. I guess I was quick to say “bust” on him earlier, he’s no bust in the long haul, but short term, he could have a hard time living up to the standards of a 3rd overall pick. Give KC a couple more drafts to build more and he could be very solid, but as for now, not so much.

Sanchez, Crabtree!
Sanchez is an easy one to call just look at the situation, all the pre draft hype then going to New York with all that wonderful media attention to nit pick every single thing he does. He also has a rookie head coach who is a defensive minded coach, take a look at chicago lovie hasn’t had any luck with QB’s and if you think cutler is going to turn that around i would have to strongly disagree with you. Crabtree is next, small reciever with a huge head, holding out over his contract because he want top 3 money. To me the only reason they are going this route is that him and his agent know he wasn’t even worth the #10 pick and he needs to have his big pay day now because he won’t get another one in the NFL.
