Football Equation
I was going to start this post of with a "Bronco-hater Hater" theme, but as a Christian I am asked to show love even to my enemies... dang it! I will do my best here to curb my annoyance, sarcasm, and countless other feelings that well up in me when analysts and fans alike shake their heads at the Bronco off-season. It's surprising, yes; but don't let it flip your couch, there is more than meets the eye here.
It is sometimes difficult to wrap our heads around something we don't comprehend, in fact most of us fear such things. I believe that is the biggest reason the Mile High City has been rained on all summer with distaste, distrust, and negativity...
But take joy Bronco-Nation, there is one simple fact that can clear everything up here:
"The Team that wins the Super Bowl, is the Team that Wanted it the most."
Before your brain can start swirling with all those thoughts, emotions, and other negative paraphernalia that you are edging on your seat to comment back to me at the end of this post... let MY thoughts interrupt you.
"The TEAM that wins the Super Bowl, is the TEAM that WANTED it the most."
This phrase is a phrase without limitations. There, I have done all the hard work, and highlighted the important parts for you. (Kind of like buying a used school book for college. Woot woot!)
For those who can't read between the lines, let me break this down for you:
This isn't junior league ladies and gents. This isn't High School. Heck, this isn't even College. This is the National Football League. Where the professionals live and die. All the rule changes, player acquisition, and guidelines that have developed over time have had one single goal: To make this the most competitive, enjoyable sport to watch on television. The last half-a-decade, has been spent leveling the playing field to make the Big Game, anybody's game. I am a firm believer in that reality, and that they are continuing to improve on that stage.
Do you think we had bad defensive players last year? I don't think we did. To the quoted phrase above I will add detail:
The word TEAM is a very heavy word in the NFL. It means a LOT of things. A team is a group of players, it is a system, it is a scheme. It is talent, research, and planning. Not just players with talent, or coaches with experience, or planning a great system... You've got to have the players who fit your system. You've got to adjust your schemes to your player's individual talents. You've got to coach with experience, ingenuity, and absurdity. You've got to go against the analyst grain on this one and get back to the roots of football. When you had players that were a QB, Kicker, and Return-Specialist, all in one man.
If you're not following this post, then you've already limited your perspective. McDaniels is on to something that the majority of Bronco Country, hasn't quite grasped yet; and that the Professional Analysts will NEVER see without hind-sight.
He is building a real TEAM. He won't settle with Drafting (or other-wise acquiring) players that don't fit his system. He said it himself. He won't draft someone he's just going to cut. The defensive players HE wanted, weren't out there. He's sticking to a disciplined ideal of what his Denver Bronco is, and he won't budge. That's not just good, that is AWESOME. And he's measuring EVERY talent of his football players, i.e. Peyton Hillis, Spencer Larson, Robert Ayers, Knowshon Moreno (a great running back that can BLOCK). Versatility means players who have MANY talents. And McD is buying up as many as he can afford to. If you haven't watched NFL Network since March, then you wouldn't know that he's also getting rid of very talented players that are one-dimensional.
This gets us to our next important word: WANT
It's not just the Coach WANTING to win, or the Players WANTING to win. Its the Coach wanting and willing to measure and take into account every single attribute and dimension his players have to offer, and WANTING to put as much of those raw, explosive, unpredictable talents into his system as it can contain. It's about the players WANTING to do every single thing that their team needs, regardless of wealth, reputation, stats, or anything else. The player's desire has to be the TEAM.
When you have the right TEAM (players, scheme, system, character, etc.), and both Coaches and Players have the right WANT. There is nothing but injury, luck, and weather that will separate you from Victory, and that's all there is to it.
TEAM + WANT = VICTORY
We do have an incredibly TOUGH schedule filled with a few other teams that have the TEAM and WANT to compete with us. I GUARANTEE however, that there are NOT enough teams like that on our schedule to give us a losing season. So for all you "so-called" Bronco fans that expect us to have such a season: NOBODY wants to hear your negative, empty, OPINION that you've copied and pasted from NFL.com.
If we don't have a winning season, somebody email me at the end of the year and I will print out this blog and literally "Eat my Words".
P.S. BRING IT!

I concur.
You have stumbled on to something that some may not have the capacity to grasp, my friend. I on the other hand, read you loud and clear. The force is strong in this one :)
Take my advice, I'm not using it!

I like your post and am very much in agreement with it.
Will we have a winning record? I hope so, and I’ve publicly said to friends that we are going 11-5, but I don’t really believe it. Maybe 9-7? We’ll see if your words are prophetic.
One point I would like to make is that those with differing opinions are welcome on this site, as long as you’re not just hating for hates sake. I think that we (at MHR) are willing to listen to negative opinions as long as they are not empty. McGeorge is one of those. He’s a fan, but has been put off by the coach, and is upset by what has happened this off season, like many others. But he is a fan, and as such has a place at MHR. Plus his posts are normally thoughtful, he’s not trying to slander the team like a Fader fan would.
Having said that, I admire your conviction and confidence in this team, and I am very excited to see how this season unfolds. I even bought Sunday Ticket again so that I can watch every minute of every Bronco game this year.
Nice first post. It’s great to have new members who are not sucked dry by the Denver Post negativity. People who can think outside the box and put a positive spin on what McD has done this offseason. It’s not like he’s trying to lose and f*ck up the team. He has a plan and is following it.
Go Broncos!!

Very true.
I can agree with you there. My passion for the restoration of a Bronco Dynasty sometimes overshadows the fact that I do appreciate the anit-fan’s opinion. The things analysts and other Bronco fans have to speak about do have their merits at times, and I love to hear all sides of the story before I heavily bias my own opinion. Haha. Go Broncos! And thanks for the rec. :)

I've been saying it for months...
We are winning 10 games this year!!!
All you get from drafting the "best player available" is a team full of good football players.

Rec'd with enthusiasm.

To answer your only question, was our defense bad, yes and no.
The problem with the defense was a lack of a great system and scheme. The coaches were way out of their league in trying to instill any kind of playership with them. Then trying to change directions with the D in mid stream was ill advised to say the least. The players looked like fish out of water on several occasions, confused, bewildered, and seemed void of any leadership on the field. The opposing offenses took advantage of that and brought it to them. Shanahan’s defensive coaches were IMO the laughing stock of the NFL. Were the players the blame? I’m not sure if I would walk out on that limb considering the coaching they had. Some of the players didn’t give the 100% you would expect from them, but that also could be contributed from a lack of coaching system and scheme.
McDaniels has painted a clear picture of what he expects and wants from his players and I think he will live up to the reputation he has set forth. His plan will be to attack, attack, and attack some more. If the defense this can keep offenses on their heels this year and not let them have any leverage, we may see a team we have seen in a long time. The players have to buy into the system to be effective, if they don’t it will be a rough road to travel down. The acquisition of key veteran players such as Dawkins, Goodman, Hill, and Champ coming back healthy, there is no reason to assume (I know, makes an a$$ out of me) we can’t go 13-3 Baby!!!

Oh how I wish..
… I could have gone into more detail in my post about last year’s defence! What you are talking about is totally it. In case everyone is expecting Dre Bly to have a bad year next season, FORGET ABOUT IT. He was a great player before he came to Denver, and he was a great player the whole time we had em’. Without a pass rush, even Champ will get completions thrown on him. There were so many fingers pointed at players on the D for last year’s stats when truth be told it had a LOT to do with Shanny (Bless him!) being an offensive-minded coach, the revolving door at D-coordinator and countless other behind-the-scenes affairs. I commend all those players for giving everything they had last year and not coming up with much. It takes MUCH more than just speed, size, and talent to put a great defense together.
Consistantly shutting down the POTENT offensive schemes that are humming through the league right now takes a ton of planning, positioning, great rookies, and solid veteran leaders. Its just a fact.

The system sucked badly
and the system was Shanahan and for what ever reason he had for the failure it still belies upon him. He was the controller.

Totally agree
The defense wasn’t great or anything, but it was not nearly as bad as it looked with the schemes and coaching ineptitude.
