A Request to Readers Who Use "+1" in Comments
I am writing this as a "post", and not a front page story. It is my opinion as a member, not as a staffer, and I haven't consulted with other staffers about it. It is my idea, and mine alone. So here it is...
You know how folks often compliment a comment by typing "+1" or something similar? It is a very nice gesture, and it is always appreciated by the person who gets it. But may I suggest a different tack? Please consider going to the comment you appreciate, clicking the "actions" link, and clicking "rec" (for "recommended"). This is really the "official" SBN way to appreciate a comment, and does much more.
For example, after enough rec's, the comment turns a bright green color. You can still type "+1", or type "rec'd", or anything witty or grateful that you come up with. But let's use the rec'd button a little more, and take thanking fellow members to a higher level.
We should always rec a good post or story if we like it, and we each have (and should have) our own individual standards for such. I'm an older guy, and I don't get the whole "Tweet", "Face", etc stuff you can do. (Heck, I don't understand Tweet, so how in the heck am I supposed to understand "RE-Tweet"?)
But let's give those comments we like a rec here and there too. If you type "+1", why not go ahead and tip the comment towards a colorful reward while you're at it?
Just sayin.
: )

Thank You!
I’ve been using that for some time, and having the comment change color is great. Hopefully this can cut down on short responses and leave great comments on a story!
Rec'd AND +1
Had to do it.

"Re-Tweet". LMAO, that was funny.
Alot of times I will rec a comment and not say that I did. No disrespect for the author just so much to read and digest. Thanks teach and I don’t know doodly squat either about all this tweeting, maybe someone should educate us in the finer things in computers.

I don't know that I'd call Twitter a "finer thing" in computers...
more like an outlet for random verbal vomit being spewed by everyone.

Depends on what you are using it for..............
A number of friends and I from all over the US meet on there every day to trade the Stock Market together. It is effective for that, although there is a lot of crap out there on Twitter. I just block it and don’t participate.
We gotta get nastier on D!!!!!!!!!
All I can speak of is personal experience...
my twitter account never gets used for anything important…ever. hahahaha

I kinda figured that one out
and started to use it that way in the past week or so. Thanks HT.

Thanks teach and will do.
I have no problem using the rec’d button for comments that I aggree with. I used it a few times in the past, however it never really stuck with me. Thanks for kindly explaining the whole thing.

It will be great to do the color-change thing
It can help people sift through the (sometimes) hundreds of comments to find the really good ones. At least, that’s what I like.
"3rd and 6, Elway shotgun... Elway, scrambling, looking, running-- DIVING!!!-- inside the 5 yard line for a first down! Is he only 37?! How important is this football game? How bad does John Elway want to win this football game? Where you see the quarterbacks go down: Not Elway!"

This is a good point.
I am definitely guilty of +1’ing, but will probably use the rec’d action more often (for comments) moving forward. It is an elegant solution to the problem of wanting to make sure the original author receives as much praise and recognition as possible, but not having a lot new to say. ; )

I have to disagree, HT...
For me, “+1” and “Rec’d” are two different things with different intentions.
“+1” is used when I agree with something, “Rec’d” is used when I’d like (as is the original intention, I assume while hopefully not making an ass out of you and me) the other members to read that particular post/comment. So, there are times that I’ll agree with something but not feel it’s especially critical that others read this post/comment; and there are times that I may not agree with what it written, but still feel it deserves to be read by others, hence a Rec’d.
For what it’s worth, I do Rec posts and comments already, and I do feel that sometimes a certain comment deserves more attention than it may get, so I understand your point. But, with all due respect, Rec’d, but not +1. ;)

I understand.
As with using the “rec” button for a Fan Post, folks will (and should) have different standards. I am close to your thinking too, in that a comment may be worth a quick praise, but not a praise that merits a “rec”.
My focus (though) is on the several instances where a comment seems to garner a lot of praise from several folks who comment, and yet does not receive any “recs” (as if the function has been forgotten).

Okay...
Well, I have to agree with that one. Such comments do deserve a Rec, although I think a part of it being “forgotten” (which it indeed may be) is that some people, until this post, don’t/didn’t know what’s beyond the actions tab (and I wouldn’t if I wasn’t too curious for my own good sometimes) and so don’t know how to Rec comments. That may change now, and hopefully more thoughtful dialogue will occur than simple +1’s.

Ive never done it. Its the last time ill do it. Lol. Plus i also Reccomended Bshrouts post above!
I'm not saying to stop typing "+1"
It is a friendly practice, and as “Temptuous Binary” points out, a comment may be worth a quick “+1” and not a rec.
Be quick to praise other members, whether you rec or not. Just don’t foget that the rec button is there too. That’s all I’m trying to get across.

I think this is an excellent point
If I recall correctly, the +1 was originally started as an indication that you had rec’d a comment, right?
Regardless, though, rec’ing a comment is a great way to show support and encourage people to voice their opinions. Everybody loves a rec.

Thanks HT!
Can already see the changes, and the comment rec function definitely improves the MHR experience.
