Preseason yes. Can you play poorly in preseason? Yes!

I saw far more good than bad tonight. I look forward to watching Orton make up for his poor play live next week when I’m at the game.

Lot’s of bright spots tonight!

Go Broncos!

by Whidbey Bronco on Aug 14, 2009 11:20 PM MDT up reply actions

Come on . . . he has only thrown 9 passes to Orton's 16.

The offense has been “vanillaed” for him. He is playing against backups . . . Orton was challenged tonight. Nothing more . . . nothing less. He will, and should start next week.

Agreed. I was not impressed with Andra. I don't think he reads the play fast enough . . .

hence, he was not in his hook/curl drop fast enough, thus allowing the TE open looks.

Chris Baker is impressive

I could see him taking more time from Fields as the season wears on. He seems to be in the backfield way more than Ronnie Fields

Our QB situation

Simms was not impressive afainst 2nd team. KO needs to get Cutler and Plummer out of his head. Its seems whoever wears the orange becomes an INT machine

lol

Yep, you’re right. Orton wasn’t great in game 1 of a preseason game with an entirely new coaching staff, an entirely new team, 2/3 of the team has new players and Simms played against the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th string defense and almost lost a touchdown because McKinnley was SO wide open that he could stand there all day while Simms’ pass lazily made it’s way there. Let’s talk mid-season and see if you’re even still posting.

Kyle Orton will be fine

McDaniels is showing me alot . . . he cares and is passionate about being a coach. He will not let this slide . . . I bet Kyle will be in at the crack of dawn tomorrow watching film with McDaniels.

Ya

Team looked good, definitely things to work on but I like the defense and the scheme, I like our depth. The players need to get on the same page and things will work really well. I think that is what he is going to work on.

Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.

He responded well to a bad day in practice by having his best practice yet

He will respond fine.

that is exactly what I felt

I liked all of what I saw from Orton, ofcourse with the exception of the three INTs. I noticed that after his first INT, he never felt comfortable in the game again.

Simms produced good stats, but I think those are a bit misleading. But I would still cut some slack to Simms cause some of the balls were there but just dropped by our WRs. Again he might look ok with our starting units, but I am not ready to giveup on Orton, because he will be fine after the preseason.

Raiders are always 4-0 in preseason and then struggle in regular season, I have no problem having the opposite of that :)

Lots of good, some bad.

A good sign from your first preseason game when the good out numbers the bad. Now they have a better idea of where they stand and what they need to work on. Tomorrow is a new day.

We"ll have an AGGRESSIVE defense again! Yea baby! Back to Bronco football.

Wow. There's more negativity here than I thought.

McGeorge wasn’t making bad points. I personally think they were hasty, but he wasn’t being unreasonable. Andrew… enough with the “f this” and “f that” and so-and-so “sucks.” How is that productive or how does it contribute to intelligent conversation?

OK… Orton threw an end-zone INT. OK, he failed to get OUT of his slump. This part of the game reminded me of the 2008 season. I saw little difference on offense, EXCEPT:

Orton actually checked down. He made decisions. He didn’t force passes. Defenders made some good plays on him, yes. He made some poor throws, yes. But he was NOT shooting from the hip, Cutleresque. I wonder if Cutler had been in the same position, what would have happened? Without Marshall in there, we’ll never now if he would have gone to his favorite receiver to a fault. But, it doesn’t matter. Orton looked intelligent. In a less generic scheme, he will likely not have these problems. Jay refused to check down, so I say Orton shows signs of being better and more intelligent. The other factor to consider when talking QB is the lack of pouting I saw after Orton threw the interceptions. I saw leadership, direction, and determination from Orton, which is a far cry from what I saw from Cutler.

That being said, Chris Simms did play very well. However, we have to keep in mind that that was against the 2nd D, as has already been stated. I don’t think Orton is McD’s “guy” at all. McDaniels said that competition would be present at every position. If he believes Simms should get a chance, he will. But it is HIS call. And I don’t think McDaniels will make a major change based on one half of football. He’s smarter than that.

Defensively, I noticed the secondary was not as good against the pass as I had hoped. We failed to force turnovers, which has been hailed as a staple of this new “aggressive” offense. In addition, the D gave up some significant run plays. I liked a lot of what I saw from the D, but I am not sold yet. Maybe with BDawk back it will be better. There is a lot to be hopeful for, though, with good reason. Lots of pass rush and pressure on the QB. THat will eventually lead to some better safety play and turnovers.

ST was better. Running backs: Hillis and Moreno were the tandem to beat. They comprise the perfect 1-2 punch. Buckhalter and Jordan were less impressive to me.

It looked like Coach had the guys prepared to demonstrate their knowledge of the plays, their adaptability, and their toughness. One can’t really judge game management (in terms of coaching) off of preseason because the objective is not the same, but I bet McD got a lot of fodder for film and practice. I’m excited about this year, but more cautious than I was before the game.

But…. BRONCO FOOTBALL IS BACK!!!!! WOOHOOO!
