Horse Tracks 8/15/09 - 49ers 17 Broncos 16; Orton 3 INTs; Knowshon Hurt; BMarsh Acquitted

Horse_tracks_new_logo_medium

Good Morning, MHR! As this is my first Horse Tracks following a game, I am still figuring out how I will handle these mornings after. I think I will try to convey here what I think was important and be info heavy at the top. I'll make sure to link the box score and highlights from the Broncos game, and just the scores and game center for other games around the league. I don't care much to read much into columns/opinions when I watched the game with my own eyes, so I'll just present those as plain, old links. But this is a work in progress, so please bear with me and all suggestions are welcome!

The biggest news of the day was that Brandon Marshall was acquitted of his misdemeanor battery charge in Atlanta. He's reportedly healthy and could practice tomorrow. Great news for the Broncos and Marshall, as this means the WR should avoid any further suspensions by the league. Onto the game...Kyle Orton had a poor game. While he looked very good on the passes he completed, he made 3 interceptions; from what I saw, 2 of them were horrible decisions and the third was a terrible throw. Knowshon Moreno looked very good, but left with an apparent leg injury. He'll have an MRI today; cross your fingers. The running game looked pretty good, pass protection was excellent, and Eddie Royal was spectacular. The run defense was spotty at best, and for the first time in years (seemingly) the Broncos produced an effective pass rush. Chris Simms performed quite well, throwing two touchdown passes and looking poised. So, it was a mixed bag. Orton is clearly a concern; hopefully he progresses over the coming weeks.

I'm sure people will be screaming about Orton, but...

I live in Chicago and got a chance to watch Orton on a regular basis. He is not a bad quarterback and can make all the throws, he just had a bad game – plain and simple.

I don’t think people should read too much into it, as I cannot recall 1 time he played so bad. It was a bad day for him. He made a couple mistakes – but thats what pre-season is for.

Matt Cassel also during preseason looked like he was the most horrible thing in the league last year. If you watched any Patriot games from last year you would have been saying, “Thank God we got Tom.” Then when Tom got hurt, if you were a Patriot fan, your first words out of your mouth were “Oh #*$&!!!!”

Matt Cassel under direction of McDaniels turned out to be a great QB – they barely missed the playoffs with a much better record than us!!!

Don’t sweat it Bronco fans – this was just a bad day for Orton. The one thing Orton is, is smart – he learns from his mistakes – and now since he had a game like this, he will be concentrated on solely correcting his mistakes.

I don’t drink the Kool-aid either – I just know from watching Orton for the last few years in Chicago. And I do like Cutler better, only for his raw natural talent though, not his decision making – of course gun slingers are always more fun to watch, but generally lack in decision making. Look at Farve – most touchdowns ever, most interceptions ever as well!

how many games did cassel start in college and the pros before last year?

Of course he sucked at first. Orton is a veteran.

That said; New team, new coach, new system, new town …1st preseason game? He gets a pass from me. Sure Simms gets looked at closer now but hell, I’m prepared to see a wide variety of highs and lows ALL SEASON. It’s to be expected, sadly.

It’s going to be a season where we flush a lot of fair weather fans… so be it. I had fun watching my team last night and saw many things which gave me hope.

Go Broncos.

BTW

Who thinks we could still get Garcia from the Raiders?

by Whidbey Bronco on Aug 15, 2009 9:51 AM MDT up reply actions

Well NYC. I watched last night’s game twice and came away with the impression that the better TEAM lost. Denver was better in all three phases last night. We lost because our starting QB left 14 points on the field with a terrible pick in the end zone and what was essentially a pick 7 due to a woefully thrown pass.

After his 1st pick, KO fell apart. He displayed poor mechanics, a weak arm and was inaccurate. His decision making can improve, and so can his mechanics and happy feet. The lack of accuracy and weak arm are distressing. The fact that he got rattled so easily was more distressing. Very disappointing effort from our QB in a game Denver should have won by two or three TDs with capable QB play.

Loved Baker… he made the team last night. Flashed several times. Not an ice cubes chance in hell he makes it through waivers after that performance. Larsen looked awesome, liked what I saw from DJ, Elvis, the starting DEs, pretty much liked what I saw from the entire starting D. Special teams looked much much better. We all knew Royal and Hillis were nasty. Moreno looked good and after watching the play where he got hurt, it doesn’t look serious at all. Simms was much better than I expected him to be.

Wasn’t impressed at all with Quinn or Ayres, but lots of positives otherwise. Funny what one bad QB performance will do to an otherwise good game. KO better play lights out next week or he’ll get booed more at Investco than Cutler.

Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.

Agreed on several points

Yes, we would have won probably at least 16-0 if Orton didn’t make those picks, but again, its game 1 of preseason – nothing to worry too much about – it doesn’t count. :)

I agree – I loved Baker as well – he’ll probably need a year to develop, but he looks like he’s going to be a force to be recogned with!

As far as Ayers goes, he won’t put up big numbers in his position. Dumervil is the one who is going to have the sacks, not Ayers. Many DE’s don’t have a lot of sacks, but they are more or less a shut down end. Meaning, if the ball is coming their way, they don’t let it pass them. Ayers I don’t expect will have many sacks, if any at all. We will see a lot of those numbers come Elvis’ way, however. You can’t keep rushing both ends, its not a wise idea to do. You must have containment on one end at least, while the other rushes the passer.

Larsen, agreed – did look awesome as well. I was pleased by McBeth’s play as well in Dawkin’s absence, and even tho Dawkin’s has an injury, I was really crossing my fingers to see him out there to start the game as he is my favorite player ever! But I knew it was a slim chance and we’ll probably be lucky to see him in game 3 of preseason before his hand heels. I would rather have him heal than to have him injure it further!

I do agree, our defense looked really good. As a whole, we did not give up a lot of yards until the last 2 drives of the game that SF had. I expected the pass defense to be good, which they were. It looked like there were a couple of times they missed their assignments while playing zone, but again, that’s what preseason is for. I was most impressed by our line and our pass rush ability by D.J. and Elvis – but mostly by the line! SF did not get more than 2 yards on most running plays – and these big guys up front are still learning and getting better every day! I believe Baker may be our long term answer for NT – but Nolan is a god send, in my eyes!

Crossing our fingers for Knowshon, but time will tell. He looked awesome, Larsen looked alright, Hillis looked wonderful as always. I feel Hillis and Moreno will be our long term answers as well. Buckhalter I like, but he is injury prone – and I don’t think he has the same power as Moreno or Hillis, but he does have what they don’t, which is experience and will make a great teacher.

Kenny McKinnley I was disappointed with several times. He dropped a few passes, and he kind of scared me while returning kicks as it looks like he is running for his life in those situations. I was always more of a downhill runner in High School and College and also fielded punts and kickoffs – I was also a ‘wedge buster’ as well, so I always liked lowering my shoulders and hitting someone. McKinnley looked like he would rather dance side to side, you don’t have that time to dance from side to side though when fielding kicks.

Alphonso Smith I liked as a kick/punt returner though, and thought he did a great job! I’ll be more happy to see how he performs in the nickel more, last night I was out of it and did not notice him playing on D.

Just my observations…

Ortons Arm

McGeorge – Agree with you on Orton’s performance overall. The most distressing aspect was he didn’t bounce back like I expected after the first pick.

But you make too much of arm strength. Orton does not have the arm strength on the 25 yard bullets. But he has plenty of arm for the long ball. His apparent lack of arm strength was a result of his lack of sticking to basic throwing mechanics – i.e., throwing off his back foot.

As near as I could tell, Orton tried to be too much like Cutler last night. Orton’s strengths are his game management and decision making ability. He seemed to abandon those last night and tried to force things at inopportune times.

I’m still in his corner. It’s early. If Orton can learn to play within himself he’ll be fine. If he continues to try to force stuff then it could be a frustrating season.

As I’ve said before (and many other posters have) Orton has some hangover effects from Chicago with the happy feet. I truly hope he can mentally bounce back as I think he has all the tools to thrive in McD’s system.

See, this is what bothers me about McGeorge

Same comment as posted in another thread, essentially, and he writes it as though no one has yet responded to his points.

Orton did not show a weak arm. He threw a bullet on an out.

What he did show was that he’s not yet comfortable with all the things required of him to succeed in the system. He made some bad decisions, some tentative throws, and that cost him. But the array of formations was quite elaborate, and for the most part Orton went to the right receivers in the correct spots.

That will only improve.

When McDaniels starts getting worried, then I will, too.

Looks like one of Philly’s back-up QBs might become available soon, should we need him.

by JeffG on Aug 15, 2009 11:12 AM MDT up reply actions

Weak arm?

I keep hearing the “Orton can make all the throws” but it seemed like Frisco started compacting the field (which may have contributed to one or more of the three picks) because they weren’t overly worried about long throws over their heads. It may be McDaniels was setting the Niners up for just that. I certainly hope so because it will be a long year if Orton can’t keep the defense back on its heals to some degree.

Decision making and familiarity with the offense will improve so I’m less concerned than most about how well Orton played in the first preseason game. I saw some excellent things on that first drive as Orton was a real surgeon up to the end zone interception.

Paying particular attention to NT it appeared to me that fields was playing a yard to a yard and a half off the center. I wasn’t sure if that was to all him to read and then fill or something that needs to be corrected. Baker looked VERY good on a number of plays but it did seem like he took a few plays off.

All and all I was more pleased with what I saw than not. I have a feeling our D will see some rough times against spread offenses and our offense will sputter until they can play without thinking so much. However, my read is we will continue to get better as the season progresses, if, we stay healthy.

Agree on Quinn

I seem to remember that he was supposed to be a great blocking TE, but everytime I saw him blocking, it looked like he was getting man-handled.

There was one block that Daniel Graham had where he almost took the guys head off! I realize that Graham is one of the best blocking TEs in the league, but I was expecting much more from Quinn!

I agree with McGeorge

The Broncos easily had the best offense, defense, and special teams of the night. Before Orton’s first pick, I loved the flow of the passing game, and it certainly seemed as if Orton was dictating the SF DB’s as he had them on their heels. Im also willing to give a portion of the blame for Orton’s picks to the complexity of the offense. There’s still 29 or 28 days till the first game, and he will have the opportunity to get a stronger grasp on the offense. I also think there will be more runs with the first unit as the season comes around, I believe this was a main case as to why Simms was so much more effective than Orton.

Just a thought

Isnt Orton learning a new offensive system that is supposed to be complicated?
Im no student of the game but I could see a difference from last years defense. There will be growing pains I believe but I think we are on the right track as a whole. Maybe Marshall’s acquittal will be the spark or turning point that our whole team needs……Just a thought.

That is an accurate take McGeorge

Comment Rec’d.
I will add that I believe Orton needs to learn to trust the OLine. They will give him more time than he had in Chicago. Unfortunately, that can not be learned in practice, but will have to come from game day experiences. That will alleviate happy feet and improve his decision making just by reducing panic mode reactions. He has shown in his history that he has the guts to handle the position, so I believe we may have some growing pains as he makes this adjustment.

NYC, since this is my rookie year at this site, I cannot offer any suggestions good or bad other than; if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Great job NYC

and rec’d McG. Great comment. Baker looks like every bit the player we hoped he would be. Funny how our biggest concern (after one preseason game, whatever that means) is now on O, not so much on D.

I am no expert but...

I agree, seems to me Orton was overwhelmed at times. His mechanics and footwork were very peculiar, but I got the impression that he was overwhelmed by the complexity of the offense and the position instruction he’s been getting. I suspect that will improve. At least I hope. The D was MUCH better as were special teams. I think this team can be competitive with more polish. I am caituously optimistic!

by TheMastermind on Aug 15, 2009 9:47 AM MDT via mobile reply actions

I'm no QB coach

but the mental errors Orton was making struck me as a guy who wanted it too much. The first drive was fantastic (with the obvious exception of the RZ INT), but it seemed like he wanted so badly to come back from it that there was a little uncertainty in his game from that point on. Rushing things, trying to find his “touch” by pulling a little too much off the ball, judgment lapses, etc. Familiarity with the system can fix this stuff. I’m still in his corner. But I’m happy to have a capable backup.

One thing I noticed

The coaches were throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the first-team offense. They ran a ton of different formations and personnel groups, and pretty complex (for the preseason) plays and schemes. Naturally, this being the first game of the preseason, there were some mishaps. I saw a few broken plays, several missed blocking assignments on run plays, and at least two plays where it appeared that the receiver ran the wrong route. I agree with Guru: I think McD was trying to test the offense and see how close they are to playing for real. What I saw was a mixed bag: as a team they looked in control of the pace of the game at times, and completely flustered at other times. Thankfully we still have 29 days to work out the kinks, so that they can be in control all the time when the season starts.

Who started on the OL with Wiegmann not playing? Also, who started at LOLB, SS and FS?

Let’s see, we moved the ball between the 20s but struggled with interceptions in the Red Zone? Hmmm, that sounds familiar. With the extra draft picks it already sounds like we got the better end of the deal…

I must have watched a different game?

I seriously must have watched a different game because Orton did far from struggled. He drove the team down the field at will each and every time he had the ball. Yes, he had 3 picks but Im sure no one works harder than Kyle at practice so I do think that will be corrected. I was at the 49er game last year and we did not move the ball up and down the field like that. Be patient my friends and lets see what happens………..

I too thought Orton did very well. I also noticed that the playcalling was pretty unusual for a first pre-season game. Those were complicated plays! I remember thinking, “Wow. That’s unusual” more than once.

by Endzone on Aug 15, 2009 3:07 PM MDT up reply actions

Mixed Bag sums it up

Overall, I saw a lot of things to be excited about, even if they’re things that need to be worked on.

Orton looked good, then he looked flustered. I don’t think that his problem is so much a lack of arm strength as he wasn’t stepping into some throws. The underthrown interception looked to me like he was on his back foot, a little too upright. Luckily, mechanical errors can be fixed, and he’ll learn to trust the o-line. Also, he has the right attitude. If you saw his interview with Vic Lombardi after the game, you couldn’t help but think he’d be alright.

Doom looks like he loves playing LB. I thought that he looked good in coverage, too. The times that Vernon Davis got open, it was on missed assignments by Haggan and Ayers.

Ayers will be the starter. Haggan didn’t look markedly better than Ayers, and he’s been in the NFL awhile. Ayers just needed to get his feet wet. He’ll be fine, and he’ll be starting.

Finally, Chris Simms looked good. He looked healthy. If Orton struggles further in preseason, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Simms start. He has a stronger arm, and he looked poised. Of course, they were running more, and Peyton Hillis is a great asset to have. It was also against 2nd-4th stringers, but it’s nice to know that the backup QB position has been substantially upgraded. He probably has a little better grip on the offense as a whole than Orton, as Simms has been here six weeks longer, but it’s a pretty good insurance policy.

This may very well be biased sentiment, but I think Chris Simms now that he is healthy, is your team’s best bet at QB..He has a rifle arm..and an extra Coach in the wings..His Father Phil, one of the toughest I ever watched play the game..The Broncos were wise to sign this kid.

Simms > Orton

Orton can not throw the deep pass and made awful pass selections. Simms is showing signs of his Buc days with his arm strength and accuracy. If Simms puts up the stats, then he should be our starter. If not, then Mc Daniels will have made his first major mistake as a coach.

by cuseindahuse on Aug 15, 2009 11:03 AM MDT reply actions

Simms was running a vanilla offense. Orton was running with a new formation and personnel grouping on what seemed every play. There’s a reason McDaniels called one game for Orton and the first team and a different game for Simms and the backups. And it’s not that he wanted to make Orton look bad on TV, or in the DP.

Very True JeffG

Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.

4 sacks!

That was a very pleasant surprise!

Three thoughts:

We absolutely NEED Brandon Marshall on the field!

If Orton relaxes and realizes that he has all day behind that OL, he will be OK.

Agreed with the above poster that Baker made the cut with his performance!

A proud prognostication of 10-6 in 2009!!!

Knowshon

ProFootball Talk is saying it’s a sprained MCL, they are not sure if it is a Grade I or Grade II yet.

"Run defense was spotty at best"

Exactly. Can’t stop the run. Can’t win. The offense will have good days and bad days. At least there is good talent at all of the “skill positions” except QB where it is average at best,. The front middle of the D has squat. Looks like another long year.

We must have been watching different games...

The middle looked solid to me. The only big runs came on a plays where assignments were missed, or the defense looked confused. The defensive front was getting good a good push, and even accounted for at least one sack. And they are still learning.

Baker was sometimes out of position, but other times you could tell that, once coached up, he has the chance to be a force inside. McBean got penetration and played with a mean streak. Peterson looked stout against the run. Fields was certainly solid. Powell (if I’m remembering correctly) was playing NT during the series where Larsen stuffed the run down by their goal line.

Where the Broncos looked weak last night was third and mid to third and long. But then, they didn’t have Dawkins, and they still have guys learning the drops at OLB. So I expect that to improve.

So, with the exception of a few all out blitzes and one or two stunt plays (did anyone notice the line push to the right on the play Larsen blew up? They set the runner up to take that cutback lane and Larsen was there waiting; beautiful!), they ran a pretty basic 5-2 version of the 34 most of the evening, and they played it very well for a team just now adopting it.

Someone mentioned in another thread that we will have trouble stopping runs to the edge because we lack speed at OLB. I’m not sure. It’s possible, but I don’t think our OLBs are terribly slow, either. Dumervil, Moss, Reid, Ayers, and Haggan all looked very athletic to me — and the 5 man front tends to force RBs to try to run inside, I should think.

So we’ll see.

disappointment

worst performance for me outside of orton was buckhalter…. sad running going to bad lanes, not physical, and easy to bring down on top of all that he was shifty at all.

We all need to give some love to chris baker he was out of position a few times but alot of the time he was pushing the center back or was pulling a double team id say even more then fields

Buckhalter OK

for the running game but Darius Walker was not. Chris Baker is a pleasant surprise.

Paige is the most negative Jerk Wad in print! Well, maby not the worst but he is working hard to try to get there.
