Orton's Interceptions

Everyone is going to be down on this guy for throwing so many interceptions in the first half of the game and it is unfortunate because it overshadows some of the good stuff he did. The one thing I notice about professional football above other sports it that is a game of momentum. Sides seem to play off the changes in momentum. A bad/good play here can feed the rest of the team or suck the wind from their sails. Even with Orton's Intereceptions the team seemed to try and keep the momentum up and Hillis on his own is a momentum changer. Give that guy the ball and the whole team perception changes. Now a look at the three interceptions.

Star-divide

#1.

They were down in the redzone and it seemed like we were going to try another running attempt at the defense. Instead a play-action-fake (faking it to the running back and then throwing it) was the play. If you watch the replay the fake was terrible. This I think had more to do with the running back being out of position than Orton. The fake looked bad and didn't even freeze the defense for a second. With that you are losing a second or two to get the ball out and Orton felt the goaline pressure. As the Guru would say he got happy feet and threw the ball to Graham about 2 feet off target resulting in Clement picking it off. This was a really disappointing end to a really good drive.

#2

This I think was Orton's worse throw of the night. I am not really sure what he was doing here. He dropped back poised to throw the ball and had some decent to time to find an outlet. The thing I noticed before he hefted it to Bly was that the pocket was collapsing on his right and he should have found an open receiver or his check down man. Not sure who he threw to but Bly was right in front of them and easily grabbed the ball.

#3

This play seemed like a fluke. It was a pretty decent throw by Orton but he was staring down his receiver and the 49er defender made a great play by going up and grabbing the football out of the air. If this play had been a little less telegraphed it would have gone for at least 30 yards if not six points.

I'm not a QB expert and if someone noticed something that I didn't please post a reply. All in All it was a great game though great to watch it especially because after the first hour it was my birthday (Atlantic time zone). Hope that we can build on some of the good things and take away the bad.

To me, each one was a little worse than the previous...

…suggesting it was mostly in his head.

The first one, to me, wasn’t a bad pass – it’s just that Graham shut down his route because of the coverage, and Orton still led him with the throw, not seeing the same thing. Orton was very good at NOT throwing picks in the red zone for the Bears, so this one surprised me.

The second one was a bad read and a bad throw – if you’re going to throw to a guy that well covered, you need to at least put it on his side, but in this offense you should be hitting someone else that isn’t as closely covered anyway.

The third was an awful throw off his back foot – about as fundamental a no-no as you can get. That just smacked of “crap, my first start here, and all I’ve done is throw two picks, and the play is breaking down a bit, and I need to make something happen…”

But I’m really not worried yet. Orton is going from an extremely vanilla offense the past several years to one that may be as complicated as any other in the NFL. It’s probably unrealistic to expect him to have complete command of it until well into the regular season. I did like the way he was directing traffic prior to the snap and I also liked his demeanor after the picks – talking with his teammates and trying to figure out how to fix things. And that first drive was quite impressive before the pick. The point is, there are things to build on.

Orton was not known for throwing a lot of picks in Chicago. His knock was that he couldn’t win the game on his own and played not to lose. So three picks in a half is such an anomaly that even his naysayers have to admit it wasn’t what they were expecting. Let’s give it more time, and see if he makes progress.

KO lead the team well

The interceptions were unfortunate, yet they are meaningless. I am confident that Kyle will do well in Denver. Simms looked ok but was playing against rookie DBs. I actually thought Simms made the worst throw of the night which ended in a completion to brandon loydd but should have been a pick six down the sideline. As funny as it sounds this may take some pressure off of Orton because it can’t get much worse, but most likely not.

by mjdbronco on Aug 15, 2009 8:55 AM MDT reply actions

???

Orton threw several bad passes. He was behind Stokely twice, got Stokely laid out once, threw a ball in the dirt that Royal had to go to ground to catch (no yards after catch), was behind Graham on a short pass, got locked in on Stokley several times, threw NO decent long passes and didn’t throw to his left. He wasn’t pressured all night. It was a dreadful performance that got worse with each drive.

Knocking Simms because Orton stunk is absurd.

by McGeorge on Aug 15, 2009 9:17 AM MDT up reply actions

I didn't pay that much attention to Orton's mistakes

I was focusing more on the RBs in pass protection and the collapse (or non-collapse, as the case usually was) of the O-line.

I will go back and look, though, play by play, to see if you have a point.

And yes, I could be biased. But— just suggesting, not absolutely guaranteeing— is it possible that with the vehemence you dislike (or, insert whatever negative word you prefer here) Orton and argue frequently against him, is it possible you are no more objective?

I’ve often found myself in situations where a first impression went badly, and I end up with an entirely different opinion of someone than most other people do just because I am looking through dark-colored glasses. We all do it.

"3rd and 6, Elway shotgun... Elway, scrambling, looking, running-- DIVING!!!-- inside the 5 yard line for a first down! Is he only 37?! How important is this football game? How bad does John Elway want to win this football game? Where you see the quarterbacks go down: Not Elway!"

What do you mean he didn't throw to his left?

The third interception was to his left. :)

I think it's good that this isn't a home game.

Hopefully KO will have a solid performance under his belt before taking the stage in front of the Mile High faithful…

Change in complexity

Orton had a bad night. We can all agree on that. He also had the more complex system than Sims. When Orton was out there McDaniels was changing formations and personnel almost every play. When Sims was on the field the offense seemed much less complex, with fewer personnel and formation changes. That said, I think Sims played pretty well.

Bad throws or bad decisions take your pick

A good post Maritime!
Kyle will be the first to tell you the three picks were unacceptable. In 2008 Orton had 206 consecutive pass attempts, over a five game span, without a interception. It’s a Chicago Bears’ record. I don’t care how you slice it or dice it, when you go 206 without a pick, that is a great achievement. Last year, he had one interception in the red zone. While he was with the Bears, imo, he had two very bad games out of the 31 he started. One in 2005, where he had 5 picks. Then last year, in the 2nd Vikings game he threw three.
I have been surprised with his number of interceptions in both practice and again last night. A think a couple things are coming into play here with him:
1. Orton isn’t confident/comfortable yet – due to the combination of a new system, coaching staff, receivers, working on fundamentals, etc.
2. The pressure Orton is under is now greater than at any time in his career – due to the criticism in the media on a national level, a fan base that is split in half over the trade, final contract year, the pressure on McD, Elway shadow, the QB competition, etc…
The confidence issue will improve during the course of the preseason. The intense pressure that Orton is under is a different matter, and I do believe it is a factor with his performance so far. There is only one way that will get better for him, and that’s by playing good on the field.
Let’s not forget, this is only training camp practices and the first preseason game. The 2008 Detroit Lions were undefeated in the preseason at 4-0. In 1985, the Chicago Bears were 1-3. I’m confident that Kyle Orton will step up his level of play as the preseason progresses. He has to!

One bad throw, two bad decisions

That’s my take. And to Sharpe as a Tack, with all due respect a throw over the top that the underneath defender can make a play on is not
a decent throw. The receiver was wide open and would still be running if the pass hadn’t been underthrown. On the end-zone pick the back (Hillis?) was open in the flat at the goal line. On the other pick the defender was apparently the primary receiver.

Hillis was open

I saw that as well Spock. Last year Orton had a tendency to hit either the FB or HB in that situation.

by rocko1 on Aug 15, 2009 12:45 PM MDT up reply actions

Rocky start for Orton-Running game, Simms, and Defense good

Orton had a really bad start with 3 interceptions. On the first one the ball should not have been thrown, because the Broncos had a sure 3 points. On the second one Dre Bly made a good play, and he probably should have been resigned. The third interception was under thrown.

Chris Simms played well and is making his case to be the starter. Simms long bomb to
Mckinley nearly looked as good as a Cutler pass.

Orton needs to settle down and start throwing the ball away. Otherwise Simms will take
his starting job.

Hillis put up 49 yards, and Moreno had 18 yards in only 3 carries.

Kenny Peterson looked good at Defensive End with 4 tackles. Chris Baker and Elvis Dumervil both posted 2 tackles and one sack. Mario Haggan at LB also put up a sack, and tackle.

The Broncos need to get their running game in high gear, and focus on stopping the
run to win games this season.

The passing game seemed to be working well for Simms, and Orton is not a Cutler.

by todd7 on Aug 15, 2009 10:43 AM MDT reply actions

Yes

Simms was a positive for me. For all the reports I read it sounded like he was having a very tough camp so far. Good to see he might be a possible option. Orton played poorly and needs to play better. Luckily he has some time and should have BMarsh coming back to makes things that much easier. He better get better by that home game against Chicago though. If he can match Cutler’s production he will win fans over. If he has a poor game it will be ugly (unless Cutler matches him the wrong way).
I am optimistic but not sold by Orton because McD and Xanders are optimistic but not sold on Orton. I think it important to remember that Orton is not a handpicked QB by McD. He is simply the guy that was the best fit among the qb’s available when the decision to trade Cutler was made. We know McD likes Orton better than Jason Campbell, Tavaris Jackson, Jeff Garcia, Josh Freeman and anybody picked past pick 12. We also know that Mcd/Xanders are not 100% sold on Orton. If they were they would have signed him long-term during the offseason when he was cheap. They took a financial risk to make sure Orton is their guy. If he proves it this season he going to earn substantially more when they eventually resign him. As fans we will know when McD is sold on Orton as his guy when they ink him long-term. Until then, he is our guy for 2009 and might as well support him.

The Run game was pretty vanilla for most of the night too

The were some big games but for the most part there the run game was pretty basic most of the game – between the tackles and a cloud of smoke. It takes QBs time to pick up this system ‘in game’ Cassel had three three of expirence under it and struggled with it for the opening stretch last year. Thanks for the replies.

The third pick worries me

Watching the game the first 2 picks seemed like mistakes cause the receiver and orton are not as familiar as they will be as the season progresses. One thing that troubled me though was you could see orton lock onto stokely at times during the first half and that could have contributed to the 2nd pick. The reason the third pick worries me the most is I feel it shows orton’s lack of arm strength. You can say what you want, but there are going to be at least 3-5 throws a game where the QB is going to be throwing from non ideal situations, whether it be throwing of his back foot or having to stand flat footed and throw cause he cannot step up due to pressure or throw on the run. It is these throws that reveal arm strength in the NFL not throwing the ball 60 yards down field and if a QB has and average arm then it limits the offense. Now that play could have been a fluke and he makes that throw 9/10 times but it does worry me that we have heard about his arm strength and one of his int’s is from said average arm.
As far as Simms goes I was impressed with his physical tools but they have never been in question with me, his problem has always been football IQ and mental toughness. So I am still wait and see on these 2 QB’s especially since the offense was much simpler for simms in the second half and I would like to see how orton plays if he had a back run like hillis did for simms.

by LuckyCast on Aug 15, 2009 1:09 PM MDT reply actions

The third pick had nothing to do with arm strength

It was easily within his range. He simply misjudged and/or hurried the throw. Lack of comfort with the system, which made it harder for him to simply concentrate on the throw, is a more likely cause and probably contributed to the other picks as well. Mechanics might have been a problem, too. He had a bad case of happy feet throughout his stint.

by spock on Aug 15, 2009 1:47 PM MDT up reply actions

WRONG!

ORTON DOESN’T HAVE THE ARM STRENGTH TO THROW THE BALL 15 YARS IN THE AIR

(disregard that bullet he threw on the out. And his entire career, starting from when he was recruited to play at that horrific QB school, Purdue).

by JeffG on Aug 15, 2009 2:13 PM MDT up reply actions

Believe what you want

But I watched the game with a high school coach and those were the first words out of his mouth when that happened. And that bullet he threw to the sidelines traveled a lot more up and down than a similar pass thrown by simms later in the game. And defending his arm strength by saying he went to Purdue is not a defense.

by LuckyCast on Aug 15, 2009 3:55 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah. Purdue doesn't know how to recruit.

That he threw 72-yards in the air coming out of high school? Doesn’t matter. You watched the game with a high school coach.

Case closed.

by JeffG on Aug 15, 2009 4:37 PM MDT up reply actions

You are right

I should not listen to a guy who’s job it is to evaluate talent. I should listen to you and your logic of a 72 yard pass 10 years ago. And just because he went to Purdue does not make him NFL callibur. The college game is completely different that the pro game and through gimmicks you can hide players weaknesses because teams usually only face a handful of NFL type defenders each game.
I will go by what I saw last night, it means more than Purdue and events from 10 years ago. Next game watch the “bullets” Orton throws and compare them to Simms. Watch how much more vertical translation is on an orton pass as opposed to a simms pass, those are extra milliseconds it takes for a pass to get to a WR, and less room for error on throws, leading to picks if he is fitting them into tight coverage and it is off just slightly. Also you are quoting Reggie Rivers and Gary Miller on the “bullet” and I have met Gary Miller and he is not that smart. But if the fact that orton threw a pass 72 yards when he was 18 is all you need to put him in the hall of fame then so be it.
