Jabar Gaffney understands his role with the Broncos, even though deep down inside he still wants to be a star. It sounds like his years in New England gave him an excellent sense of team and humility.

Kiszla wants to see Brandon Marshall commit himself to helping the Broncos win in '09, contract extension or not.

Thanks, NYC
Especially for the links to highlights of some games. Cutler’s INT was classic Jay – under pressure, he threw it up for grabs. At least it was way downfield, so as good as a punt (I don’t know what the down was).
Have a nice day. So far it is sunny and nice here in Colorado, although the forecast was for rain and cold.
He felt like the man who drew the first circle. Perfect, and complete.

TY NYC
Thing about Cutler I noticed was that he was still locking onto one guy and trying to force it between 3 people. Even sportscenter circled a low dumpoff receiver he had wide open when he threw his pick.
He is a gunslinger and you will get the good and bad. Other than that the Chicago scheme seemed mundane. I expect they haven’t implemented anything yet. At least I hope so for Chicago. It is preseason, doesn’t mean much.
Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.
totally agree
with those points, after watching same highlights. I’m really not rooting against Cutler (even after his recent comments) and expect him to end up with a ton of yards and the Bears with a good record, but he’s going to do some of the same maddening things he’s always done, and even though Chicago’s a good team overall he’s going to struggle more without having the same outlet guys to rely on. He threw to Brandon Marshall alone a lot, sometimes relying on BMarsh’s height to win free for alls, and going to Royal a lot too. I’d argue the Broncos first three recievers are all better than the Bears’ first (not to open that can of worms again) but they have some good TEs and RBs so he might adjust to throw to them more often, and go for the long bombs to someone like Hester. It will be interesting to see what adjustments he does make this season, if he matures in necessary ways.
Amazing number of links
I read one other article this morning from a 49ers perspective, called First Drive Diagnosis going play by play on Denver first defensive series.

The Audacity of Hopelessness
Now the Broncos can only hope their 25-year-old receiver is willing to give Josh McDaniels the same chance to acquit himself of charges he’s unqualified to be an NFL coach.
This DPO teaser panders to the average Bronco fan. Probably makes some tingle in the loins. But this is what it has come to in Bronco Nation— Brandon Marshall has become THE tragic protagonist who will save us from Josh McD…and people obviously lap this crap up like the finest indonesian goat’s cream or something. Get arrested a lot, put in a pouty trade request, stand at a Bronco podium and act like a passive-agressive teen-aged victim and take shots at the organization, and win the hearts and minds of the ‘faithful’ all at once.
Wow. What a proud era in Broncos fandome.

This stuff is sad.
I guarantee coaches around the league saw what McD threw out in that first drive and got scared. This is a well coached team that needs to get it all together.
Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.

Best news from any post-game article
" The Broncos reported no injuries other than running back Knowshon Moreno (knee) following their preseason opener. . . . " (on the DP)
Glad Knowshon is gonna be okay too.
Btw, I might be in the minority here but I actually think Jabar G is going to be a fairly valuable backup WR this season. Sort of a hunch, sort of based on how he looked in practice (more than how he looked in first game) and knowing he can help off the field, too… but I think as a #4 he’ll be pretty good.
And thanks nyc as always.
Thank God!
I was worried about Knowshon, but I felt pretty good about his condition. I remember saying after one play, when he jumped back up I thought he was limping. He didnt come off the field that play, however, and they called a drive up the gut. He seemed like he didnt have near the same power as he went down, trying to drive backwards, pretty easily.
He came out after that play, I think the coaches noticed on that play. The fact he was able to make another play though, told me it was probably just a hamstring pull or something, not a tear in anything that would take a whole season to heal.
But still a relief as I was worried knowing he was injured.
Worried about Moreno
I got real worried when I realized he was hurt after we got intercepted – same way TD got hurt. Good to hear he’s going to be OK. It’ll set him back some more, but he’ll be fresh in October.

Question
Is Kenny McKinley making your final roster? How are you guys feeling about him? I am a HUGE south carolina fan and really, really hope he makes it with you. He looked really good the other night
Please, please draft a big Defensive Tackle. Please?
Enter Fili Moala. Thank you Polian
He has enough value on ST too that
I think he will make the final team (imho). He clearly has talent. I saw the game in person Friday and thought he looked both very good at times and at other times like the rookie he is (some mistakes, but that’s to be expected). Maybe he’ll be a practice squad player at worst though I don’t know if he’d clear waivers. Anyway I like his future!
I guess I have no clue...
…what to look for with 3-4 DL because I seem to be the only one that thought McBean was a problem on Friday. I know he got a sack, but he seemed to get dominated and driven away from the action on run plays very consistently.
What did I miss?

I think he was just protecting his gap
I think it was on his sack play when it looked like the OL had him tied up. Then the QB moved to the right a little and McBean just shed his blocker and got the QB.

Top 10 pick Andre Smith has not yet signed with Cincy (our 1st opponent). Not sure if that is a good or bad thing for Denver.
Part of me wants our OLBs and DEs going against a rookie in his first pro game. Another part of me knows Clady was pretty damn good from the get go and would rather not play against a talent like Andre Smith. Maybe best case is he signs a week or two before the opener and we get to play against a rookie that missed most of camp. Either way, Andre Smith’s holdout is a good thing for Denver.
Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.
Good points, McG
I am taking heart from Smith’s history – when not being carefully watched and cornered like a rat in a trap, his tendency has been to gain weight, get out of shape and generally lose his edge. That being the case, I’d like to see him hit camp about 2 weeks before the end of preseason – just enough to get to play, not even close to enough to be fully ready. Hey, we’ve got our own issues – I’ll take all the help we can get!
I’m constantly astounded by Cincy – they keep right on taking players who have serious character issues and still get upset that those players don’t magically improve their personalities. I’ve honestly thought that Smith has more bust potential than any other player in the 2009 draft. I guess that we’ll see.
Hillis/Moreno in '09
Thanks NYC
I really liked the parts in the article on NFP about the Broncos, especially Moreno. I saw it on his first play that this kid has got some speed. Boy is it going to be fun to see him break one open…..kiss him goodbye. Good to see someone looked more into the game than most MSM.
On McKinley: I agree with the other posters on that I think he will make the roster. McGeorge said it best about his late TD. He really did a good job of extending the play as Simms was rolling out.
