Great job as always, NYC!
But a question for (hopefully) some discussion: Frank Schwab, in his Dumervil piece, makes the claim that “Since right and left outside linebacker are interchangeable in the defense, perhaps Ayers and Dumervil could end up starting together”.
Can anyone with more knowledge than I do debunk this? Sounds awfully suspect to me. The LOLB has the responsibility of more often taking on the TE when rushing, plus covering same in the passing game, right? ROLB is the weak-side pass rush, having to go around the Tackle with no help (other than maybe a RB in pass-protect), doesn’t he? Not to mention, the LOLB position would probably be better served by a good run-plugger due to that being the offense’s strong side.
by BroncosBassist on Aug 18, 2009 6:40 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
It looks to me like they are going mostly with the 5-2 look.
In that case, the OLB are basically interchancable. They play mostly downhill and coverage responsibility is limited to basic zone drops. I think part of this has to do with a point McGeorge brought up last week: Denver does not have an OLB that you’d want with TE coverage responsibility. Whether this is a weakness or intended, I don’t know. I would guess that as Ayers learns the scheme, he will become the ‘elephant’, which means he might technically be listed as an OLB on the depth chart but he could show up anywhere along the front seven at any time. It will be common, for example, to see both OLB’s on one side. You might find one between the ILB’s in certain looks. They may start at OLB and then assume ILB responsibilities while the ILB’s blitz. Whatever— they’ll be all over the place pre-snap.
I think the best way to look at it from a 4-3 perspective is to transfer the traditional roles of the 4-3 OLB to the ILB’s in a 3-4. The LOLB is usually the strong side ‘stack’ guy, while the RILB is the guy they try to keep clean on the weakside to make plays. The OLB’s are less constrained by convention in this scheme and much less likely to be asked to much coverage beyond basic drops.

Beat me to it...
I would add, that if you’ve watched the practices they’ve done some interesting substitutions for Davis in passing situations. Both Woodyard and Barret seeing time.
McD said early on that all they expect the OLB/DEs to do is drop into shallow zones.

Thanks to both of you.
The responses bring up more questions, but this isn’t the right forum for that conversation. I think I might take it elsewhere and see if I can stir up some discussion.
By the way, it appears that this defensive scheme would be particularly vulnerable in the short flats and against good receiving TE and RB.
by BroncosBassist on Aug 18, 2009 9:32 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
In the plain vanilla version
that is true. But Nolan is also mixing in a heavy dose of zone blitzes so the QB is never sure who is dropping into the shallow zone, and the OC has a dilemma selecting his pass-protection, i.e. keep the RB in to block (and whom). We all saw in the SB what can happen if a QB mis-reads a zone blitz.

If someone is going to answer this good question above, I have another: Do the DEs in a 3-4 have different rolls or are they “interchangeable”?
Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.
by McGeorge on Aug 18, 2009 7:43 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Theoretically
the LDE has to be able to fend off a TE as well as the RT. But with the prevalence of 2-TE formations I think that distinction is disappearing.
by SlowWhiteGuy on Aug 18, 2009 8:29 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Denver should fire the idiot that told the players what to say about BMs trial. The last thing The Coach needs is a rouge employee trying to make an name for himself by pissing off BM and any other player that felt this dolt was overstepping his duties as a ball boy or jock strap manager.
And I agree with you NYC. If that was a bombshell dropped by the NFL network, the bomb failed to detonate.
Seeing the ear to ear smile on Jamie Dukes when he came on at halftime during Friday’s game, it’s obvious he knows he is disliked in Denver. Moreover, he seems to enjoy this. Cutler’s play was just as awful as Ortons so I’m curious – did anyone see what he said about Cutler’s performance?
Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.
by McGeorge on Aug 18, 2009 7:53 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
He glossed over Cutler's performance.
As for the PR guy, he was trying to manage a delicate situation. A woman claimed she was beaten. We know that Marshall has a history of domestic violence, even if he has also been the victim of said violence. So it makes no sense to show yourselves over-excited that he beat the rap of punching his ex-girlfriend in the face on this particular occasion .
Hence, the idea of not showing too much emotion either way. It’s a PC world, and the Broncos are a business.
No reason to fire this guy, other than that he supposedly acted alone. Which I doubt. Because I don’t think his counsel was ill-advised.

I'm so confused.
For the life of me, I can’t come up with an opinion on how to handle Brandon Marshall. The Roddy White deal has to sting, and I understand his desire to be paid for his ability. Yet the recent incident with the new fiance would be a deal killer for me, if I was in the Bronco’s shoes. It shows that he has a real lack of judgement and an inability to control his emotions despite the possibility of dire consequences. I mean, how to you fight with a woman in public— even just verbally— when you know that the NFL just needs an excuse to derail your career? He doesn’t seem to have that tempering internal voice that defines most adults. I could forgive the passive-agressive teen aged angst, the camp malingering….pretty much all of it, but I’m not sure I could trust him to the point of a fair-market contract.
I feel for Bowlen on this one. It’s a very tough situation, and the Cutler multiplier makes it nearly impossible to ‘win’ this one.
by PredominantlyOrange on Aug 18, 2009 8:57 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
It is a tough situation
and the Broncos are basically handling it as best they can. I said it before and will say it now (and then hopefully I’ll shut up about it ;-) ) Marshall and his agent’s sense of timing couldn’t be more off, asking for a new contract, for a raise, on the heels of both his hip injury and his trial. I mean that takes either a lot of arrogance and gumption or a lot of stupidity, or all three. But I think all of football would agree they’re doing the right thing with him.
I want him on the team but he needs to show he can keep doing it on the field, that he’s healthy and mentally ready, and play with the team, And then they’ll pay him. They’re doing it ass backwards and it could screw with his whole career frankly.
by underdog on Aug 18, 2009 10:00 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think everyone should do this…imagine Brandon didn’t have any of his legal issues. Now, considering that he is coming off hip surgery and a hamstring injury, has a year less of experience than Roddy White does, and he’s not due to become an unrestricted free agent after this season, would anyone suggest that a contract extension would qualify as a good decision Denver’s part?
Personally, I think those factors are enough to answer with a big, fat “NO.” The legal stuff? Icing on the proverbial cake. He’s got to at least show that he’s healthy. That is priority number one. If he does so, and McDaniels/Xanders are open to in-season negotiations, then maybe they can talk extension sometime after 5 or 6 regular-season games. But even then, they’re not required to do so – BMarsh has zero leverage.

Marshall will play
or sit the pine with us. If he even thinks about feigning a catch he should have caught I would bench him for the rest of the year.
by bfree2bronc on Aug 18, 2009 10:43 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I completely agree
I can’t quite understand what was wrong with counseling the players to show a little restraint about Marshall’s trial verdict. It would look extremely shabby to gleefully rejoicing in the outcome of a domestic abuse trial.

Don’t know if anyone has posted this yet, but I had to pass it along. Cutler pretty much blames his interception against Buffalo on Devin Hester.

Heh
This made me chuckle:
Hester admitted Monday that Cutler’s comment upset him at first.
“But then he [Cutler] said he didn’t say it,” Hester said.
Enjoy him, Chicago!
by underdog on Aug 18, 2009 10:02 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
So, like,....
…He was just sayin’, you know, that he didn’t realize that Hester doesn’t, you know, have ball skills, and that he just assumed he did when he purposely underthrew that ball, and, like, you know, know he knows that Hester isn’t very, you know, good, and has to, like, be, you know, spoon fed. That’s all he was sayin’, you know. He wasn’t, you know, throwin’ Hester under the bus, you know, he was just saying that in the future he’ll adjust, you know, to the fact that Hester can’t really, you know, play, as shown by that perfectly, you know, and intentionally, you know, underthrown ball. That’s all he was saying. You gots to put it right in Devin’s hands or he is worthless is all he was saying. Nothing bad, you know. He will adjust, you know, to Deven’s incompetence. Geesh.

Mike and Mike in the morning (with Mark Schlereth)
I don’t know how to make my own little post, so as long as we are posting news, I wanted to post what I heard this morning on Mike and Mike. They started saying, “Broncos and Titans” and Greenie says, “Oh boy, two teams going in different directions.” Both Greenie and Stinkie (Schlereth) agreed the Broncos stink. Their “best player” is disgruntled (speaking of Brandon Marshall). They are playing with an entirely new system with 70% turnover in players. The prediction for their record:
Greenie: 4W 12 L
Schlereth: 5W 11L
Golic: 7W 9L

The 4-12 predictors
are going to look like complete idiots as much as anyone predicting 12-4.
I’d look forward to throwing it back in their faces at the end of the season but of course they know it’ll be long forgotten by then.
by underdog on Aug 18, 2009 10:03 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Also, I know I'm biased but
I look at the Raiders’, both their staff and their personnel, and the Chiefs, same, and don’t see how they get free passes but the Broncos are the ones who are going to be bad in that division, finish last, etc. The Raiders coaching staff doesn’t impress me, aside from their pugilistic skills, JaMarcus Russell continues to look poor in training came (maybe he’ll be replaced at some point this season by Garcia) and they don’t scare me on either side of the line. The Chiefs should be better, but after reading about and watching a little of their new coach in action I have to say I prefer being lead by McDaniels, and I’m not convinced Cassel will be the same guy with less weapons around him. In short they all have questions but I llike the direction the Broncos are going in, DESPITE what Mike and Mike have to say. I’m pretty sure they haven’t studied the Broncos in depth. I’m sticking by my 8 and 8 prediction, and a team that will at least compete in the games they play.

I don't get that either
The faiders continue to be a League-wide joke- their Head freakn’ Coach is sucker-punching the other coaches? Are you kidding me? They’ll be LUCKY to win 4.
While the Chefs appear to be headed in the right direction, maybe, what’s to say that they’ll be better than Denver? Why would they be, considering the records they’ve put up over the last few years? They’ve got an entirely new staff and are installing the 3-4 just like we are, but somehow this isn’t mentioned.
Everyone talks about our “really hard schedule”, as if the rest of the AFC West doesn’t have to play that very same schedule (with the exception of 2 games) just as we do.
Yeah, Denver is clearly the basement dweller of the AFC West because…. well… they don’t have cutler any more and their D was really bad last year.

Your links really help all of us to stay in touch with what is being written in Denver and all over the USA. I am concerned that Klis implies that McBean did not play well and therefore the trade for Smith. I do not see this trade that way at all. I thought McBean has been a pleasant surprise all camp and did in fact play very well. I see the trade as another opportunistic move by X-man.

Rulon Davis
Not that I saw him play at all but I was really hoping this guy would pan out as a diamond in the rough. Being cut this early doesn’t bode well for even a practice squad position. Too bad.
by RudyR on Aug 18, 2009 10:29 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
It is really to bad for the guy, he'll rebound somewhere I'm sure and we'll see him play on a 4-3 team I supose.
With us he would of had to translate into a LB too small for DE in the 3-4.
