Ashley Lelie from a Broncos Point of View

Hey guys Tomahawk44 from AP just wanted to get MHRs feelings on Ashley Lelie the newest Chief. I remember this guy burning us quite a few times as a Bronco but from what I see he hasnt really had a good season since 05 his last season with the Broncos. Lelie seems to be a team jumper and this seems to be his last chance...What do you think has gone wrong with Lelie and do you think he can turn it around? How do you feel that he is playing for his third AFC West team?

Lelie had this to say in an interview:

"I don’t think (it’s too late)," Lelie said. "With the coaches bringing me in, they don’t think so, either. I’ve been running whenever I can, running routes, trying to do anything competitive, go play basketball, whatever I can do to keep that competitive edge. It’s kind of hard to motivate yourself to keep running when you’re waiting for that call.

"I’m so fresh. I haven’t really had major injuries. My body hasn’t been banged up. I still feel like I’m 23 out there."

Not trying to start a debate between AP and MHR I would just like to know your honest opinions on the signing of Ashley Lelie.

Lelie has got speed.

He is amazing on a go route, but afraid to catch over the middle. I liked him while he was here.

Speed

is good to hear b/c we have been lacking a deep threat in KC

by tomahawk44 on Aug 18, 2009 5:38 PM MDT up reply actions

Speed is all he has

He struggled with inconsistent hands in Denver. He would make a spectacular catch deep, then drop a perfectly placed ball. I don’t think he was ever able to run good routes or gain separation (unless he plain outran the coverage on a go route).

Hmmm. I’m starting to think I am re-writing Darius Heyward-bey’s scouting report here…

He was a primadona about not being designated the #1 WR in Denver even though he hadn’t earned it, but He may have grown up since then.

Overall, if you guys got him cheap he may be worth it because he is a deep threat, but I would hope they don’t invest much in him

+1 on DHB

and Im not sure how cheap we got him I just know that we replaced Jeff Webb with him so Id hope hes an upgrade b/c Webb had no hands at all

Up and Down player

From what I remember of him in Denver he’s

got a really good skillset

got a “me-first” attitude

The way he’s traveled from team to team, makes me wonder if he has any staying power.

His problems seem to lie in his hands and his head

He’s got great legs. He’s had attitude issues everywhere he’s gone up until now. Let’s fact it – when the Raiders don’t like your attitude, that’s a problem.

Always seemed to under-acheive...

I always thought he had a ton of potential, but he never really performed consistantly to be a reliable threat.

Has a case of “Stone Hands” from time to time…

Also grew “Dino Arms” on passes over the middle…

I always thought he might get his act together after he left the Broncos, but so far it hasn’t turned out that way.

by RevrendBronco on Aug 18, 2009 6:16 PM MDT reply actions

His attention span and concentration were the problem.

He is gifted with speed and could occasionally break open a game. He always seemed immature to me, but perhaps that’s improved with age. It’s true he’s never really had any serious injuries. He doesn’t fit the bill as a #1 receiver which is how he thought of himself. All in all he was a disappointment here.

Does well with the long ball, but

Like others have said, he doesn’t play the middle very well. That being said, I said all of the same things when he went to the Raiders, and he scored on us.

So basically...

fast, decent hands but scared to take a hit…and kind of selfish?

by tomahawk44 on Aug 18, 2009 7:08 PM MDT reply actions

well..

your poll is kind of “off” – you can’t resurrect a career that never happened

You would be much better off if he reinvented his career.

He catches at much less than a normal rate, in fact has one of the worst years in history:
06 – 41%
07 – 38%
08 – 24% [tied for worst in last 15 years with at least 25 targets]

by Todd Jewell on Aug 18, 2009 8:19 PM MDT reply actions

Inconsistent

It always seemed to me he would make the big circus catch (and he made some big, impressive, clutch catches), but he’d miss the ones that move the chains. With that and the apparent attitude, I don’t think many missed him here. He had/has skills, just needed to improve the mental side of things.

I also recall his college coach (June Jones) raving about what a great kid he was, so perhaps he’s come around. No hard feelings here if he plays 14 decent games for you.

I think Lelie can experience a rebirth in KC

but he will probably be a chameleon for going however the team goes. If you struggle, he will struggle equally. He isn’t the kind of guy who can create on his own.

As to his attitude problems, i don’t think he will be the first player to suffer the oakland nausea and come out the other side scathed, but a better person for having seen it. It could be the light that helps him solve hsi personal problems with entitlement issues.

But I lost track of him at the end of his oakland stint, so I don’t necessarily know if he has changed or not….

I Have Said it Before

Nobody was able to come within his fingertips of catching a deep ball only to fall over and tumble a bit like Ashley Lelie.

He used to come to my recreation center though and seemed nice.

Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.

by Kfustud on Aug 19, 2009 8:33 AM MDT reply actions

1 trick pony

Go route was all Lelie brought to the table; however, his physical limitations are not the real problem. Plenty of speed guys with spotty hands and a lack of will to go over the middle have been productive NFL receivers.

His problem is that he apparently lacks ANY will to compete. I don’t remember him EVER winning a jump ball or contested catch on the field and he absolutely flipped out when we brought in Walker who was coming off reconstructive knee surgery. Basically, he refused to report to camp and compete for a starting position with a gimpy Walker and a 36 year old Rod Smith!

That lack of competitive desire more than anything would seem to be why he can’t stick with even the most underachieving, receiver needy teams.

by Elway's Ghost on Aug 19, 2009 9:26 AM MDT reply actions

I would not get my hopes up.

I absolutely agree with Elway’s Ghost. The problems are in his head. He just lacked the killer instinct. Definitely not a tough guy like Rod Smith or Hines Ward, and I really hoped Rod Smith would rub off on him. When Denver drafted him, Shanahan thought that he was going to be the next Randy Moss. Denver has connections to Hawaii’s program through Pat Bowlen and seemed to have scouted him well. He dropped passes at key times and went with the flow of the team. He wasn’t a leader who was going to go out there and turn things around and will the team to success. He thought that he should be designated and paid like a #1 when he had not proven it on the field. The only play he was ever really good at was the fly pattern on a Plummer bootleg. Except for that play, which Shanahan and Kubiak worked hard to set up, he would just disappear. I found his desire to get paid prima donna money was just bizarre. Mark Schlereth described him as at best a decent #3 receiver, which I have always found apt.

what everyone else has said...

he has speed and potential but he could not run a route or make a clutch catch to save his life.

he wasn’t worth half of what he demands. but if you got him cheap and he is willing to give up his ego, he could help out.
