2009 Denver Broncos Training Camp - 8/18 Post-Practice Quotes - Josh McDaniels

On the signing of DL Le Kevin Smith

"He's a player that I had some familiarity with. He has obviously played all three spots in the 3-4 system in New England. He's been a productive player in the time that he's played but he's also been behind some extremely talented people in New England. He's done some good things and he continues to get better. He's a younger player. He's healthy. He's the size we want and he understands how to play that position. His versatility and the fact that we can add him to the mix is a good thing for our team."

On whether his familiarity with Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick helped with the trade

"Sure. Of course. Bill's great to work with. We continue to have a solid relationship and we didn't have any arguments about this thing."

On whether he met with WR Brandon Marshall on Monday

"I'm not talking about that. Those were all private meetings and we're trying to do what's best for the football team."

On whether he's worried about Marshall being a distraction this season

"Nope. I'm not worried about that. He's out here, he had a good practice today and we're looking forward to continuing to do that."

Star-divide

On why he has that kind of confidence in Marshall

"I'm confident about a lot of things. I know that our team's going in the right direction, our players understand what we're trying to do and get done and Brandon's out here performing the way that he's capable of performing. So, I don't have a reason to feel otherwise."

On whether there's an advantage/motivational factor for players seeking an extension

"I think everybody in this, I hope everybody in the world-you do your job well, you're going to be rewarded. He's no different, you know what I mean. We're all in the same boat. We're trying to do the best we can and hopefully we'll all be given what we've earned and deserve. But that applies to everybody."

On whether Marshall will play at Seattle

"Good. It'll depend. Last week we started four receivers. We started four of them out there. Certainly every day is a day he gathers more information about our offense and our system. We'll make that decision as we go forward here, but there's certainly a chance that he can be on the field."

On whether S Brian Dawkins will play at Seattle

"Again, we'll make the decision here as we go. It's too far away from the game to say whether or not we'll go ahead and put him out there or not."

On QB Brett Favre signing with the Minnesota Vikings

"It doesn't surprise me that he's back. Glad we don't play the Vikings. He's a hell of a player, always will be. I don't know when he's going to lose the ability to be a very good quarterback. But it isn't right now. It wasn't last year. He beat us (New England) last year 34-31 and we did just about everything we could do to try to beat their team with him as the quarterback. He just finds ways to win and does things that only a few people can do. Minnesota's going to be very fortunate to have him pulling the trigger."

Perplexed

Coach McDaniels is so very open and transperent on some things and so closed and secretive when it comes to Marshall. We know there is a lot going on there, we just don’t know what it is. I like what we are trying to build. I hope Marshall can fit into our long-range plans.

You shouldn't be perplexed . .

He doesn’t want the issue with Marshall to played out through the media. After the way the media spun the “Cutler-McJaygate” issue, I am sure he doesn’t need the same headaches. Personally, I am very glad he is not sharing ANY information about Marshall.

Nice read John

thanks.

From what I’ve seen, if you look at McD’s pattern, he’s transparent on things that are open to the public, but more closed in situations where there are issues to be worked out. I respect that. When I have issues with someone, I try to talk directly to them first & work it out before I’ll ever say anything to anyone else, I respect those who treat me the same way.

I think McD wants Marshall to be there long term, and now it’s on Marshall to demonstrate that he wants to be there.

Team issues are dealt in house.

That is one of the things I like most about McD. He refuses to let the media know about anything that they have no business knowing. Work things out in private so the MSM can’t blow anything out of proportion. The MSM is on a need to know basis and they don’t need to know.

Agree w/ you re: McD

Problem w/ the MSM is if they don’t get something to blow-up, they’ll just make something up anyway

The Coach MUST stop referring to the Patriots as “us”.

Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.

by McGeorge on Aug 19, 2009 7:28 AM MDT reply actions

LOL

I mean when referring to a time he was coaching with the Pats it really is normal, acceptable, and understandable for him to use the term us.

Yes I want him to say “us” and mean Denver, but haven’t you ever spoken of a past job and said “We” or "Us"’ regarding a fond, or not so fond memory?

I see where you are coming from, but I consider that almost a petty comment McG. No offense meant but lets focus on the important things…..like this years US.

Just my humble 2 cents

He's speaking in the context of that time frame,

…not in the context of any loyalty. For example, when I moved up from middle school to HS coaching, I refered to previous experience with another team as “us” because it wasn’t “them” when I was coaching at that time. After I switched careers, I coached a little (wrestling) at a HS in another town. Whenever someone asked me a question that related to my previous gig, it was acceptable to say, “We did this…” or “We were that…” etc.

If your comment was meant as a friendly sarcasm though, I completely apologize. At first I read it, and I thought you meant it in jest. Then I couldn’t tell. At that point, I hoped to offer another view just in case.

Roger that HT

but McG is a pretty smart guy…Not that he might have already realized this and could’ve been just giving McD a little “chip” as he was going by…He really has been trying to get behind The Coach lately so I am tending to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one…

by BroncoSense72 on Aug 19, 2009 8:55 AM MDT up reply actions

Frankly

He shouldn’t talk about this stuff with the media. They are not your friends, they are not there to listen to you, they aren’t there to get your side of the story. Don’t fall for the friendly demeanor.

Lessons we should all remember.

Tis better not to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.
