2000 yard rushers....., zero.  1300 yard rushers......, one.  Versatile, team first players that don't put the ball on the turf very often..... a lot.  It appears here that a SB team  needs a couple of guys that can share 350 carries,  avg 4.2 yards per carry score a dozen TD's, only turn it over 3 or 4 times, and be able to block and catch it out of the backfield.

So, do we have what it takes?

Offense:  An above average offense.  A line that allowed 11 sacks in 616 attempts.  A line that was 2nd in the league in yards per carry with 4.8 despite an unprecedented 6 backs on the I.R. and finishing the last quarter of the season with a cell phone salesman carrying the ball.  A QB that will give his team every chance to win based on his 21-12 winning record with a team that had no receivers and an average defense.  A receiving and tight end group that is as good as any in the NFL.  A group of running backs that are versatile and going to create problems and headaches for defensive players and coaches.  Check.  Check.  Check.  Check.  Check.  Check.

Quarterback:  A smart, game managing player that will complete 61-62% of his passes, throw for about 3200 yards, 22 TDs, around 12 ints., have close to a 90 QB rating and pull himself off the turf 25 to 30 times( with Denver's O-line a lot less).    Kyle Orton, CHECK.

Wide Receiver/Tight End: A group of talented, unselfish, crafty route runners and pass catchers and good down field blockers.  Eddie Royal, Brandon StokleyJabar Gaffney, Kenny McKinley, Daniel Graham, Tony SchefflerRichard Quinn and Brandon Marshall if he so desires to grace us with his presence.  Check.

Running Back:   Two versatile, team first players that can share 350 carries,  avg 4.2 yards per carry, score a dozen TD's, only turn it over 3 or 4 times, and be able to block and catch it out of the backfield.  Peyton Hillis and Knowshon Moreno. Check.                          Similiar backups that can fill in at any moment. Correll BuckhalterLaMont Jordan, and Ryan Torain. Check.

Turnover Ratio:  A head coach and coaching staff that focuses on fundamentals like holding onto the ball and stripping the ball from the carrier. A coaching staff that doesn't just "talk about the importance of turnovers," but one that implements drill after drill that require each player's full attention to be on turnovers all the time.  A coaching staff that has the players running laps of shame when they fumble it.  A coaching staff that has its players in full pads 2 to 4 hours a day hitting each other with one focus in mind of holding on to the ball or stripping the ball.  Check. Check. Check. Check....!!!!!!!

Defense:  A group that will be at least average, but above average at points allowed.  A group that was trimmed of the fat  to say the least and replaced with a group of quality starters and one freak of nature.   A group of serviceable lineman that will bend, but not break.  A linebacking corps that will be big, physical and attacking the offense on every play.  A back four that will keep teams out of the end-zone and cause turnovers.

This is my analysis and I hope it was worth your time.

P.S.

If anybody thinks that Coach McDaniels does not know what he is doing, they are DEAD wrong.  He brought in a QB that fits the mold of a SB champion, got rid of a gun slinger for some draft picks that improved our defense,  brought in Gaffney and drafted Mckinnley to compliment our solid receiving corps,  brought in 3 RB's and drafted 1 RB that fit the mold of a SB Champion running back to compete with Hillis and Torrain.   He also brought in defenders that are big, tough, smart, football savvy, and proven winners.  If you can't see all the good McD has done you need to visit your local eye doc or apply to work at ESPN or the NFL network.

I want to thank all of you for the hard work you put in to make this offseason somewhat bearable.  I want to thank John Bena and co. for this website and most importantly I want to say 13-3 Baby!!!!!!!!!

Great CP...

Now 13-3 doesn’t seem crazy enough to me. I’ve got to say 16-0 now! Haha.

Great work man, I didn’t realize you’d be posting the second half immediately. I love the ending analysis and the focus on Turnovers.

I think people get so caught up in the players, skill sets, schemes, and systems; that they forget the real Game Objective, and that’s either taking the ball to the endzone, or preventing your opponent from doing so. Ball-focus is paramount and I am extremely glad that our coaches are finally emphasizing it. Finally coaches that teach the game of football, and not just complicated situational BS.

Let’s get physical and take care of that ball, that’s all we need!

It's Orange Crush time. And no I am NOT talking about the soft-drink.
Which I beg the question: "Can liquid really be... soft?"

3 TE Set = 3 losses or less.

Do it MickeyD... 13-3!!

Outstanding.

I’m ecstatic you share my excitement. Thanks for reading.
It wouldn’t let me post it on one fanpost so I copied and pasted it to two…

Outstanding Work

Thanks CP!

As a favor, would you break down the defenses too? That would be very interesting.

by Endzone on Aug 2, 2009 2:58 PM MDT reply actions

Defense...?

Defense is difficult to break down statistically on individual players. They simply need to work together as a unit no matter what formation, 3-4 or 4-3, although I believe 5 of the 8 teams ran a 3-4. They need to create turnovers and not give up points. How many future defensive HOF are on any of the 8 teams I broke down…. Not many, but all 11 players on almost every team played their role with some nastiness, unselfishness and a lot of relentlessness. (that was a lot of ness..:-). The one thing they did have in common was veteran leadership at one safety that typically brought the wood. Hey, I think we now have one of those. Don’t we?

Terrific post, CP!

It can’t be a coincidence that many of us see that Josh McDaniels has brought a whole new attitude to town! His demeanor and hard work must be what Pat Bowlen saw in him before he was hired.

This defense will do some great things, but we have to expect a short learning curve while they all get on the same page.. I sure wouldn’t want to disappoint B Dawk very often! LOL!

Outstanding chopperpilot,

If out offense is in the top 10 in points and our defense is average with 16-20 points allowed then there is no reason why we can’t go 13-3. San Diego is our main concern in the division, because I don’t see Oakland or KC providing any real punch this year. The parts are all there, all we have to do is put the engine together, tune it and race. 13-3 Baby!!!

Thanks, I very much agree about SD. It’s really difficult to guage their talent and more importantly coaching..Norv Turner, most notably.. Their former D-Line coach saw greener pastures in Denver..Nunnely..

Excellent post

There is really no reason to believe we can’t have a turnaround like the Dolphins had…I mean people are acting like we won 2 games last year. We were 8-8…I think with better coaching and better schemes we will have a great shot of winning the division – We were 1 win away with the worst defense of all time and an offense that had trouble scoring points.

great job CP

I think that your wrap up is right on and fits the mold for giving us as good a shot as anyone to get to the playoffs THIS year.

I beleive, however that it will depend a lot on how well the D jells and esspecially the LB’s. Great job and a fun read.

Thank you for your analysis

But I’m not ready to drink the 13-3 Kool-Aid quite yet.

I think a better title might have been “Surprising Characteristics of Championship Teams That Show We’ve Still Got a Shot.” I think some of the findings you identified would also be true of solid teams that didn’t win the Super Bowl instead of unique aspects of the league champions.

But you did a lot of great thinking, and I like your conclusions. Certainly your thoughts are more worthwhile than the lemming-like posts that the Jets are guaranteed to make the playoffs because they have Mark! Sanchez! Or the Vikings were going to win the Super Bowl because they were going to sign BretFavreBretFavreBretFavre. People seem to fall in love with and overrate a “great arm.” Aaron Brooks had a great arm, but the Saints started scoring a lot more points when they signed Drew Brees. And the conventional wisdom was that Chad Pennington only had a strong enough arm for the European league, but all he did was lead the Dolphins into the playoffs. I like our chances with Kyle Orton.

But I don’t think you looked into our defense as carefully as you did the offense. I’m not sold that we’ve brought in “a group of quality starters.” But I’m hoping to be convinced. Time will tell.

broncospriestess, I Have The Same Concern

Similar to your thought pattern in your post All I Want For Christmas Is An Average Defense.

I didn’t agree with your conclusions there but I liked your template. It would be interesting to do a comparison with Super Bowl defenses. How would YOU do a Defense comparison similar to chopperpilot’s Offense comparison?

Way to break it down,

So we can rec ya twice!!!!

= )

I know, it wouldn’t fit in one – but that’s the first post, I’ve been able to rec twice!
Great stuff, and thank you for helping it to be more bearable as well!

First team to three consecutive SB wins!!!! and then some, right? I think four and we oughtta let someone else have a fair shot : )

Kudos on the research Chopper

I honestly think that if we can get our players to drink the kool-aid of 13-3 then it can become a reality!

GO BRONCOS!
