Horse Tracks 8/21/09 - Training Camp over; Will Marshall or Dawkins play tomorrow?

DB - Day 21 Blog - Zach Eisendrath
Matt Prater, Brandon Lloyd and Matt Prater didn't practice yesterday. Chad Jackson saw plenty of reps with the 1st team, while Matthew Willis got into the punt-returning mix. Rod Smith made an appearance, helping Eddie Royal (but not BMarsh) with some pointers. In Prater's absence, Britton Colquitt performed kickoffs in addition to field goals.

Can I ask a stupid question? Why is everyone talking about suspensions for Cable? If my boss attacked me and broke my jaw in a meeting, he would be walked out ON THE SPOT and never allowed to return. And that is before his criminal trial after I pressed charges on his violent ass. The Undead needs to fire him yesterday.

Yep you are totally correct,
but, it isn’t the real world it’s the NFL until the control of the lost touch owner Al.

As someone that really HATES the Raiders, I could not be more thrilled about Cable being their head coach. Cable is someone that has been promoted 19 levels above his competency. It’s nothing short of fantastic that he is the coach of an AFC West rival.
The last thing I want is for Oakland to fire Cable and attempt to replace him with someone capable of doing the job.
Love the Broncos, don't like their Coach.
by McGeorge on Aug 21, 2009 11:14 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I love it
At this point in the preseason, Al is just SOL. He’d have to promote someone on the staff to HC. Who could he get to come in at the end of training camp to take over for what is essentially the Titanic with an extra hole for good measure? No, wait, the Titanic was impressive, in her day. I guess it’s more like Scuffy the Tugboat.

Nobody is capable of doing the job
Al Davis guarantees to handicap/cripple anyone with any sort of talent. He won’t let his head coach hire his own staff or implement his own system. And he won’t let them stay in Oakland longer enough to show any sort of spark or ability.
Davis wants somebody who is underqualified and just grateful to be making a buttload of money. So that the don’t care that they have no control over the coaching staff or the players.

ha ha...
I sort of feel the same way with Norv in SD…. although Turner is several levels higher than Cable in terms of abilities and qualifications.
We should all hope Al Davis lives to a ripe old age and continues to run the Raiders for as long as he lives…

Liked this comment from Graham (in the Scheffler story)
“The offense can change, so we don’t know what’s going to happen each week, so we’re just going to be prepared for whatever they give us,” Graham said. “Everything seems the same; I feel like I never left New England, being in this camp this year.”

I like this one too
After Orton threw a perfect pass to Scheffler during a one-on-one drill, the tight end turned to his quarterback and told him to remember that play, saying "put that one in the bank."

Anyone else get the feeling that Rod
is doing exactly what he loves doing the most? No specific schedule, no long hours on the clock, no paperwork, just showing up every now and then to pass on his hard acquired wisdom to the young players.

Rod has stated
That he has no interest in coaching. I believe it was the long hours that turned him off. He DID say that he would be amenable to stopping by from time to time and being a mentor type for the younger players.(He has already done this, as you probably know).

I was enjoying reading the articles this morning...
until I got to the one from Ramsey at the CSG. All of a sudden I though I was reading something from ESPN. Geeesh can’t these glorified hack writers let anything go and just wait and see what happens?
Thanks for putting these links together NYC.
by bchiper on Aug 21, 2009 8:30 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
That is because Ramsey is an Op-Ed writer
For reporting and Journalism read Frank Schwab’s articles at CSG. You will find more peace of mind and sanity by not reading most MSM opinion articles. If you filter through the sources and find one with reasonable and consistent writing, stick with them. This is, knowingly, a difficult task.
Thanks for the Horse Tracks NYC. Happy Friday all!

I've got to say
I really liked what Lombardi had to say about the way McDaniels can use Marshall this year.
I really have a feeling that all of the controversy around Marshall is going to just blow over by the time the regular season starts, and we’re going to see one POWERFUL offense go to work.

I just don't get it.
How do you think the fans really play any part in if somebody gets traded or benched? The coaches don’t care what we think. They want to field the best team that will win them the most amount of games. Once they are winning, the fans will be there. No doubt.

Completely agree . . .
McDaniels and his staff could care less what we think . . . that is a sign of a good coach. Coaches that bow to fan pressure fail every time.

COuld very well be true
By the way, the new article on the DP by Klis about this very thing was all questions. It really bugged the heck out of me, so this is what I wrote in the comments there (one of the rare times I post anything there):
Maybe this is just me, but I feel like as a reporter if you don’t know the answer to these questions, then maybe you shouldn’t be writing the article until you know the answers, you know?
First it was the Disappearance of Matt Prater, and now it’s this (admittedly a more ongoing story). Instead of trying to build the suspense out of nothing, how about letting it play out with the facts.

Simms ranked #9
I found it interesting that Simms was ranked #9 on the SI article ranking all of the backups. I wonder what they ranked Ramsey at last year? I definitely feel better about our backup QB situation this year.
Also, Cutler’s backup (Caleb Hanie) is a dead last #32. The Bears are definitely “all-in” this year with giving up so much for Cutler (again, thank you Bears!), throwing him behind a suspect O Line, and then having Caleb Hanie as their backup QB.
People can use statistics to prove anything, 87% of all people know that.
