Two steps backwards

Coach McDaniels should not have given these players the light schedule on Thursday.

Terrible looking in ALL phases. Really dumb interception. Defense with no RE. Four fumbles do to lack of securing the football. ST does not know where to run to.  McD should have left the 1's in the game until they learn to play.

Right now the strength of the team can not run the ball and guess why? YEP 8 men in the box.  The D knows that if all you are going to do is dump/dunk the ball off 5 yards then all defenders can play 5 yards off the line. Do you realize that I figured that out myself.

I think Monday was an off day. WELL it may be back to work and they need it.

Terrible just terrible how they regressed.

I disagree

We played well in the first half. We actually had the lead 10-7 when Orton threw that int. However, you half to take into consideration that we threw the ball every play. I’m 100% sure that we run the ball in the regular season and come away with 6. That would put us up 17-7 and, mostly likely, the Seahawks would not have scored. Special teams in the second half was horrific though, but our defense stopped the run. So as far as I’m concerned, we did well except for in special teams.

And don't forget Gaffney should have caught that one.

The first team played well

What the second half showed us is we lack depth but that’s no surprise, especially on defense. Our starting three on the line are playing better than I expected. That’s what we were worried about. It’s too much to expect to have 6 or 7 good players on the line. McDaniels is concentrating on situations and evaluations. He’s not going all out to win. You have good teams — the Colts are a good example — that year in and year out compile a mediocre record in preseason and then start winning when the games count. And you have bad teams that go 4-0 or 3-1 in preseason because they’re going all out to win, but once the season starts and everybody else is going all out they start losing. Eventually, the way we’re going, we’ll have good starters and back-ups at most positions.

I think we should just take 'em out back and shoot them all.

Did you bother to look at Orton’s stats?

Atleast come with something real.

They haven’t run the ball because they haven’t really tried…because KM is unavailable and Buckhalter is gimpy.

by PredominantlyOrange on Aug 22, 2009 11:28 PM MDT reply actions

Orton ran the offense just fine until McDaniels' stupid call with 4th and goal.

If he does that in the regular season I’ll jump through the TV and chokr the living crap out of him. Man I’m pissed!!! McDaniels set him up to fail and that ain’t good. Any time you can come away with points you get them, period.

I doubt he makes that call or even goes for it in a real game.

That was practicing a possible situation with very little risk. If nothing else, they know a play that doesn’t seem to work in that situation.

I think you’ll see more balanced diet of runs in the RZ in the regular season. McD is just protecting his hand.

McDaniels was experimenting

That’s what preseason is for. The game doesn’t count, so you try out things you wouldn’t do in a counting game. In a counting game we would have kicked a field goal.

In a regular season game . . .

we would have brought in a 3 TE set with our 2 big backs and pounded the ball into the endzone. Touchdown! End of story.

But, also, don’t forget that Gaffney dropped a TD pass in the back of the endzone the play before. That was a great play call.

by milehighnation on Aug 22, 2009 11:28 PM MDT reply actions

I thought the first half looked great.

Even Orton’s pick was only a little stupid…cost some field position. But short of a miracle, its a turnover anyway. We got three sacks against the first unit. We stoned them until the momentum change.

The second half? Not very impressed with Robert Ayers but Lee Robinson stood out. Some guys (#68) might be getting waived as we speak. The second half was a disaster.

by bcfunk on Aug 22, 2009 11:37 PM MDT up reply actions

it wasn't just you

I’m hoping that confusion lessens during the next two weeks. It seemed like every third play, an OLB was getting into position so late that they didn’t even have time to stop and collect themselves before the ball was snapped.

Even so, I was encouraged by the defense.

My reaction to Carter’s injury – before I knew who it was – made me realize how little depth we have.

But who will guard the guards themselves?

I also disagree with the post

I agree with milehighnation, and add that the observation you made all by yourself was during the second half, with the more vanilla play-calling back in force. Get a life and WATCH the game.

by idahobronc on Aug 22, 2009 11:33 PM MDT reply actions

All in all, the Broncos did a lot of good things.

Had Gaffney caught that TD pass from Orton right before Orton’s stupid INT, the Broncos would have went into the locker room with a lead and ole MO on their side. Denver has to start getting turnovers instead of giving them up. They aren’t good enough to turn the ball over 3 times and still win.
Special teams need a LOT of work but I did think the 1st team defense was pretty good! Did Baker play at all? He is one of my favorites so I figure he will be the amoung the 1st cuts???

I thought the Broncos played a solid game in the first half. The second half was another story. Simms getting hurt definitely did not help.

That's why it was good for him to get out on the field

He can start getting used to how fast the game is played at that level. Remember that even simplified he’s a rookie trying to run a very complex, sophisticated offense. He simply wasn’t able to go through his reads before the rush got to him, even when he had what would have been sufficient time for Orton or Simms.

The good news for Tom B and us

He is not expected to be a starter. He’s not even an immediate backup at this point. He’s got a lot to learn, but he’s smart and he will be alright. Anyone that was expecting 200 through the air and 3 td’s is being very unreasonable. Not saying that anyone here expected that, but you know what I mean…

I'm sure he's been paying attention all along

It’s a shock for any rookie QB to experience the speed of the game at the pro level. No amount of book learning can prepare you for that, and even practice has its limitations. It’s not as if he’s been loafing and not paying attention. This was expected and was a valuable learning experience. And remember, he’s not just a rookie. He’s a rookie learning to play in an extremely complex offensive system.

I'll take your five yards

Dink and dunk for five yards a pop will continue to drive the ball down field, like tonight. I’m guessing they didn’t run because it’s preseason.. you work on what needs worked on. There were other elements that concerned me, but the dink and dunk style wasn’t one of them. Kyle played well, save the interception. Putting eight in the box was a flaw on their part, not a bonus. We weren’t even running, as you pointed out.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm watching the same game as people like this poster.

Does anybody seriously think that the play calling down by the goal line at the end of the second quarter was indicative of how McDaniels would actually call a game in that situation when it counts?

Beside the guy who posted this, I mean?

In the locker room….. No off handed passes down field… ever…. see Plumber and Orton for the reason why.

Well I thought they showed some good things

I’ve been called a negative nancy on this site (although I prefer to think of myself more as just a realist). In looking at the game objectively, I thought the Broncos showed some really good signs. They moved the ball really well, especially considering Moreno and Marshall were not playing. Orton played well overall, only negative was that one boneheaded play where the team should have a;ready been off the field. The defense got some pressure on the pocket and played pretty well against the run.

Yes mistakes were made, but it’s the preseason. Denver is implementing new schemes on both sides of the ball. It’s going to take a little time. Relax, it looks like it’s starting to come together a little bit.

I think your post couldn't be more correct!

You made the greatest point that a lot of posters here are not taking into account. 8 men in the box is abosolutely the biggest issue with the Broncos offense this year. Stats only tell half the story.

Kyle Orton’s inability to throw the ball with accuracy downfield will cause defenses to stack 8 in the box for most of the game. I’m not going to say that McDaniels scripts the first 15 plays or so because I don’t know but it’s obvious that he came into this game with a specific plan for Orton in terms of getting him in a rythm. But here’s the problem…In Chicago Orton did the same thing, and as long as the play developed perfectly, Orton could make his reads and throw his 5 to 15 yard passes. But when things broke down and defenses applied pressure, you got the interceptions and poor decisions that you’ve seen from Orton thus far.

The guy I feel most sorry for is Moreno. This poor kid has enough to think about being a rookie and nursing an injury now he has to be Orton’s bailout when he’s not able to get the ball downfield. Orton was the reason Matt Forte was over used last year. Stats look great when you’re in the flow of an offense and tossing screens and quick slants, but come on you guys know what a real offense looks like. When the play isn’t there and that QB has to make a play, will Orton do it? I don’t think so.

by Dils on Aug 23, 2009 9:44 AM MDT reply actions

Thank you for sharing Dils

feel free to come back when you actually know something about football.
8-men in the box gets eaten alive by the short passing game. That’s what the short game was developed for.
You are the weakest link.

by SlowWhiteGuy on Aug 23, 2009 9:52 AM MDT up reply actions

SWG, all you left out was the obvious fact that Orton has yet to have to ‘try to throw the ball downfield’. Judging by his 170 some yards passing in a half, the eight in the box cliche seems to be working out just fine. He probably secretly thinks to himself in the huddle "Please, let them keep stacking the box so that we can continue to run themselves into one another and free guys up.

by PredominantlyOrange on Aug 23, 2009 10:00 AM MDT up reply actions

Wow.

The short passing game in this case is developed by necessity because that’s what this QB is only good at. A team stacks 8 because they DARE the QB to beat them in the air. Why? Beacause they’ll rather take there chances with the QB throwing an interception. But hey don’t take my word for it. Keep watching the games . Even with Orton throwing “safe” shorter passes in McDaniels system, he’s STILL got 4 interceptions in 3 quarters of football.

by Dils on Aug 23, 2009 10:28 AM MDT up reply actions

the passing game in this case features 3 wideouts .I can guarantee you no defense is gonna stack the box to take away short passes . Now will they load the box up to get pressure on Orton by blitzing ?YEP but if you think some coordinator is saying oh we dont think Orton can throw a 20 yard pass you are really just fooling yourself .

Who is the Bengals nickel corner ? exactly

This is the same offense the Pats run and we are using the short passes to setup the deep ones but why would we throw the deep ones if we dont have to in the preseason ON THE ROAD.

As for Ortons interceptions its a pretty well established fact that Orton doesnt make a ton of mistakes but these are all helping him grasp the offense and I think anyone hanging onto these picks as some knock on Orton is really grasping at straws .

and since when did preseason games started being spliced together ?

by Hoopforia on Aug 23, 2009 6:49 PM MDT up reply actions

he’s STILL got 4 interceptions in 3 quarters of pre-season football

by lolcopter on Aug 23, 2009 7:35 PM MDT up reply actions

It's called the West Coast Offense

You may not be aware, but it was developed by Bill Walsh. It emphasizes short passing routes based in specific timing patterns that generally spread the field horizontally. That’s both the nature and requirement of the system. McD mixes it with a vertical pasing approach that was also evident – and effective – at other times. A 69% completion rate is a thing of beauty.

the run something similar in Chi

only its called the worst coast offense.
you run for no gain on 1st down.
then you try against on 2nd and long
then you watch your QB get pummeled on 3rd and long.
it’s quite entertaining – for the other team.
